HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros offered contracts to arbitration-eligible shortstop Carlos Correa, infielder Aledmys Díaz and right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. on Wednesday. The Astros, who made the playoffs despite a 29-31 record in the pandemic-shortened season, also reached a one-year deal with righty Austin Pruitt. The 26-year-old Correa hit .264 during the regular season, then batted .362 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 13 playoff games. He was the overall No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, the AL Rookie of Year in 2015 and an All-Star in 2017. The 30-year-old Díaz also excelled in the postseason, hitting .353 after batting .241 in the regular season. McCullers, 27, went 3-3 with a 3.93 ERA after missing the 2019 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Acquired last January from Tampa Bay, Pruitt, 31, missed this season because of an injured right elbow. He had surgery in September and is expected to be able to pitch early next season. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2020 The Associated Press. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday the league remains committed to finishing the regular season as scheduled. Focusing on those questions rather than on Saturday’s matchup (2:30 ET; NBC) would not serve as much of a preview, so let’s beg CuseNation’s Stephen Bailey to discuss both this weekend’s expectations and the long-term Orange outlook. © Getty Images DF: There are a few reasons I will struggle with keeping this to just Saturday. There is not all that much compelling about Syracuse dragging the remains of its locker room to northwestern Indiana’s snow just to lose its 10th game in a season that would be fraught even if it was going well. By Matt Citak (CBS Boston)- Well folks, we have reached the end of the road. It’s been an interesting season for the NFL, as just like everything else in 2020, COVID has caused the league and its teams to adjust on the fly. However, despite some road bumps along the way, we have arrived at Week 13, meaning we have reached the regular season finale for fantasy football. If you’re still reading this article, that means you are either in or still fighting for a spot in your league’s postseason. In a year like this one, that itself is an accomplishment. But just making the playoffs isn’t enough- we want to get you to a fantasy championship. While it isn’t the greatest week on the waiver wire, there are still some players likely available that could provide your team with a big boost, both in Week 13 and the weeks after. For leagues that use the FAAB budget system, feel free to start emptying the bank on free agents, as you only have a few more chances to spend it....
Two weeks from Saturday, the Warriors are scheduled to play their first game in nine months. The NBA unveiled its preseason schedule Friday, with less than a month to go before the regular season starts Dec. 22. The Warriors will play three preseason games in advance of the regular season, fewer than their normal preseason slate of five — yet another tweak as the NBA aims to play a 72-game season amid a raging coronavirus pandemic. For their first game of any kind since March, the Warriors will host the Denver Nuggets on Dec. 12 (5:30 p.m. Pacific Time). The Dubs will stay in Northern California for the duration of the preseason, as they’ll head to Sacramento for a pair of road dates with the Kings on Dec. 15 and 17 (both at 7 p.m.). Getty Images Kemba Walker may not be ready for the start of the 2020-21 NBA season Weeks away from the start of the 2020-21 NBA regular season, Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens spoke candidly about his team’s approach to training camp, including All-Star point guard Kemba Walker’s left knee and the lingering concerns that come with it. Even Stevens will tell you, Kemba wasn’t right. By the end of the Eastern Conference Finals, it was evident that Walker’s injured knee had taken a toll on his body as he wasn’t able to attack or defend with the same mobility we saw early on during the regular season. In the latest episode of the Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman Podcast, the Celtics head coach admits his starting point guard was hurt and provided an update.Brad Stevens On Kemba Walker’s Left Knee: ‘It’ll Be Some Time Before He’s Going Full Speed For Us, For Sure’Talking to Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman, Stevens says the goal, right now, is to get Walker’s knee back to full strength. BOSTON (CBS) — Veteran NHL defenseman Johnny Boychuk is hanging up his skates. The 36-year-old Boychuk is retiring from the game, due to the eye injury he suffered during the 2019-20 season. The Islanders announced the news on Wednesday. Boychuk suffered the injury — the second injury to his eye — in early March, when the skate of Montreal’s Artturi Lehkonen hit his face. Boychuk needed 90 stitches to heal that wound. Boychuk had expressed optimism for potentially playing when the NHL restarted in the summer, but he was able to play in just three games. He suffered a head injury in his first game back when Mike Matheson delivered an illegal check to the head. The Islanders said that the decision to retire was made “after numerous and extensive medical exams.” A native of Edmonton, Boychuk was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2002. He was traded to the Bruins in 2008, and he became a regular in the Bruins’ lineup in the 2009-10 season. He averaged 20:30 of ice time during the 2010-11 season, and he maintained that...

After leaving the NBA’s “bubble” at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, teams likely anticipated a bit of a layoff between seasons. Early reports indicated the 2020-21 campaign wouldn’t begin before mid-January at the earliest and March at the latest. So, uh, about those vacation plans … The NBA and National Basketball Players Association bumped up the 2020-21 season start date to late December. It was largely a financial decision, as the NBA feared a January start could cost the league up to $1 billion in revenue losses. The NHL remains firm in its desire to start the 2020-21 season on or around Jan. 1, according to multiple sources, as the league prepares for Thursday’s virtual meeting of the Board of Governors that will provide updates on potential Return to Play scenarios. Realignment into geographically designed divisions that would feature the league’s first all-Canadian division since the 1923-24 four-team NHL featured Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa, is all but a certainty. The league has no interest at all in playing through the summer, so that will mean a truncated schedule of anywhere between 50 and 70 games, depending upon the league structure. The NHLPA has indicated its desire to play the full 82-game schedule, but that would take the league into late August. That is not a possibility. The schedule would likely be modeled on the 2020 MLB season in which travel was limited through geographical play. It is possible that teams could play baseball-like series, with, for example, the Rangers going to Boston for three games in a five-day period. Dates would have to be left...
Getty The Vikings dropped their plans to pursue larger crowd sizes at home games for the rest of the 2020 regular season. The Vikings broke some bad news for fans who were hoping to see a game at U.S. Bank Stadium in the final seven weeks of the season. Amid a surge in coronavirus cases across the country, the Vikings dropped their plans to pursue hosting more than 250 fans for the remainder of the team’s regular-season home games. A state mandate has prohibited indoor gatherings larger than 250 people throughout the season, however, the team had continued to work with U.S. Bank Stadium and the state in an attempt to host more fans at some point this season. The Vikings announced the decision in an official statement on Wednesday: After much consideration and discussion with U.S. Bank Stadium partners, the State of Minnesota and the City of Minneapolis, we will no longer pursue hosting more than 250 fans for the remaining 2020 Vikings regular season home games. While we have worked hard to develop a safe and...
The Knicks shut down their practice facility in Tarrytown after three employees tested positive for the coronavirus during a routine screening, the team said in a statement Tuesday night. The unidentified employees were described as asymptomatic and are under quarantine. The facility, which was used for voluntary workouts, is set to undergo a “thorough cleaning” before being reopened at a later date. The Knicks haven’t played since March, when the league halted the regular season due to the pandemic. They did not qualify for the completion of the regular season and postseason that took place over the summer in a bubble-like atmosphere near Orlando, Fla. The 2020-21 NBA season is set to begin Dec. 22.

For the first time since 2016, the Colorado Rapids are in the MLS playoffs. And they made it to the postseason even after missing five games because of a coronavirus outbreak. In a strange year, Major League Soccer heads into Decision Day on Sunday with some surprises. Like the Rapids. “Everyone just feels relieved. It’s been a tough year, but to finally get over that hump and be in the playoffs is huge,” Colorado midfielder Kellyn Acosta said. “I know everyone’s excited. But I think for us, we know it’s just one box that we just checked off of our list.” Decision Day is the last day of the Major League Soccer regular season. BOSTON (CBS) — It may seem like the NBA Finals ended just a few weeks ago, but the NBA will be back a lot sooner than we expected. The National Basketball Players Association board of representatives approved a plan for a 72-game schedule that will tip off on Dec. 22. on Thursday, according to ESPN. The NBA and the union still needs to finalize the deal, as well as figure out an amended collective bargaining agreement. Those talks are expected to extend into next week. But the groundwork is in place to have the 2020-21 NBA season begin in a little over six weeks. The league will be back open for business once an agreement is in place, which would open the door for trades prior to the draft. The NBA Draft is set for Nov. 18, and the hope is that the league can begin free agency soon after. That should set up a busy few days for the NBA transaction wire. Under the agreed-upon plan, training camps would open Dec. 1 — just two weeks after the draft....
Photo by Adam Glanzman/Getty Images The NFL regular season has almost reached its midway point. Keep a close eye on these five matchups as teams jockey for playoff position.  There’s nowhere for teams to hide heading into Week 9 of the NFL regular season. As the old mantra goes, records don’t lie. Any franchise wanting to believe they are legitimate Super Bowl contenders that currently possess a sub .500 record is deluding themselves. That doesn’t mean there’s not ample time to turn things around. There’s still over 50% of the regular season to go. Reversing a team’s fortunes is currently unlikely, but not impossible. Teams wishing to enact that sort of change need to start that work immediately. Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski said Wednesday that the NCAA’s cap on the number of games presents some challenges for the upcoming 2020-21 season. Krzyzewski made his opinion known during a conference call with reporters, according to ESPN. The NCAA said initially that teams could reach the maximum 27-game number by entering a multi-team event (MTE) but last week the NCAA said a team could reach the number with two MTEs. MORE THAN 30 COLLEGE TEAMS TO PLAY EARLY GAMES AT CASINO “In cutting down from 31 [games] to 27 [games], it should have been where you just give 27 games,” the legendary Duke coach said. “We didn't do that, so then people tried to form their own MTEs, get into different things and now, you can get into two MTEs. You're trying to figure out games. I just think the planning in that regard was not very good. Once you cut down from 31 to 27, you should've just given everyone an opportunity to schedule and not worry about the MTEs. We actually have formed our own because we...
