Shane Bieber, Cleveland Indians. (Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports) Despite having a winning record, the Cleveland Indians could be sellers at the trade deadline. Even with a 45-42 record at the All-Star Break, the Cleveland Indians could potentially be sellers at the upcoming trade deadline later this month. While that mark could have them within striking distance of the New York Mets in the NL East, too bad Cleveland plays in the AL Central. Cleveland trails the Chicago White Sox by eight games in the division standings. With a rebuild coming at some point, it might serve them to sell high on a few marquee assets at the deadline. They have several key contributors who become available soon. Time flies when you’re having fun, and the fifth anniversary for “Pokemon Go” arrived faster than seemed possible. One day players were swarming around parks catching Vaporeon and the next thing fans know, they’re getting ready for a global Pokemon Go Fest. As the game reaches its fifth birthday today, Niantic is holding a celebration marking the milestone. Running from 10 a.m. July 6 to 8 p.m. July 15, players will see a plethora of familiar faces commemorating the occasion. The event is focused on the starters for each generation that has been released on the mobile title. Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie will be appearing around Pokestops with Lures. Some of these will also be appearing in the wild. If you don’t have good PvP version of these Pokemon, it’s a great time to get one and the best part about this is that everything aside from Oshawott, Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie can be shiny. Nearly all of these starters have a role in...

These are the position players who will be on the bench and the 12 pitchers who will be on the staff. Some starters and reserves may miss the game because of injury, and some pitchers may not be able to work in the All-Star Game because their turn in the rotation next week will cause them to miss the Midsummer Classic. Replacements for injured players and unavailable pitchers will be selected by the leagues and announced prior to the game. Injured starters will be replaced by the All-Star managers (Kevin Cash and Dave Roberts), who will choose from the reserves the players voted...

Blue Jays second baseman Marcus Semien and outfielder Teoscar Hernández also were first-time All-Stars chosen in fan voting, joined by Los Angeles Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani, picked as the American League’s designated hitter; Boston third baseman Rafael Devers, Cincinnati outfielders Nick Castellanos and Jesse Winker, and Pittsburgh second baseman Adam Frazier. Matt Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals (Photo by Rob Leiter/MLB Photos via Getty Images) At some point, the Cardinals will need to consider making some significant changes to their roster if their struggles continue. As the July 30 trade deadline looms, the Cardinals could be in for a roster overhaul depending on where they sit in the playoff race. Entering Thursday, St. Louis is eight games back of the division-leading Brewers and 8.5 games behind a Wild Card spot. They’ve underperformed thus far, and haven’t been able to get on any sort of roll as of late. They’re coming off a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks, who have the worst record in the majors, but the Cardinals have gone 11-22 against teams with a record above .500 this season. It’s been a case poor offense, inconsistent starting pitching, and some injuries to key players that has resulted in a combination of losing. That isn’t The Cardinals Way, so it shouldn’t be long before change is made on the current roster.3) Matt Carpenter is struggling at a high price for the CardinalsIt...
The A’s had a rare off somewhere between series against the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies. After a 16-game stretch they could rest their legs, hang out with their families and get some space from the same 26 teammates (and coaches and staff) they’d seen day in and out. But the A’s starting staff didn’t need any time away from each other. On the off-day in Denver, starter Cole Irvin organized a fishing trip for the rest of the rotation and some other teammates. Irvin, the newest member of the A’s rotation, felt compelled and comfortable enough to organize the gang. They wanted to see each other again. “The starers have a unique bond that you rarely see in Major League Baseball,” A’s second baseman and left fielder Tony Kemp said. “For example, we’re in Colorado they’re all going to breakfast together. They’re a tight knit group. To see where they come from, they’re grinders. They have short term memory and like to grind games out.” That chemistry between Irvin, Chris Bassitt, Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, James...

On May 2, the Cubs lost to the Reds, 13–12 in 10 innings, in a game that Cubs manager David Ross commented afterward, “felt like a playoff game.” That may have been true of the game’s back-and-forth nature, but the playoff vibe was certainly not due to his team’s form at the time. The loss was the Cubs’ seventh in nine games, dropping their record to 12-16. Starting pitcher Trevor Williams—who allowed six runs and was the fourth Chicago starter in five games who failed to...
Yankees’ hitting coach Marcus Thames analyzes some of the team’ slow starters By: Andres Chavez April 23, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditAt this point, much has been written about the New York Yankees’ offensive struggles to open the 2021 season. They have been well-below average in several departments, including runs scored, wRC+, and WAR. Several of the team’s top hitters have been in prolonged slumps, such as Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu, and others. In a conversation with ESPN’s Marly Rivera, Yankees’ hitting coach Marcus Thames offered a few thoughts about some of the club’s coldest stars. LeMahieu, who won the batting title last year with a .364 average, hasn’t actually been bad if we judge him by the most basic stats. He is hitting .275/.359/.377 with a 114 wRC+, but that’s a far cry from the .364/.421/.590 and 176 wRC+ he slashed in 2020. “He’s trying to do too much,” Thames said about DJ LeMahieu‘s struggles at the plate to start the season. Part of LeMahieu’s issues is...
Yankees’ pitching coach talks about length, balancing starters’ workloads and not overtaxing the bullpen By: Andres Chavez April 15, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditWhile the New York Yankees’ bullpen has been extremely impressive in the early going, the starting rotation hasn’t been able to replicate that success. Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery have been phenomenal, but Corey Kluber, Jameson Taillon, and Domingo German haven’t been as good. Before Thusday’s games, Yankees’ starters not named Cole had combined for a 6.06 ERA, and if we take Montgomery’s 3.27 ERA, it would be even worse. Needless to say, Kluber, German, and Taillon haven’t been able to provide length, either, overtaxing the bullpen. The Yankees’ relievers have a 1.84 ERA, which is the best mark in the junior circuit. And it has been a team effort, well beyond the usual names: Lucas Luetge, Nick Nelson, and Jonathan Loaisiga have also contributed. The Yankees and the balancing act of pitching workloads Yankees’ pitching coach Matt Blake knows it’s still early in the season, but he also knows that...
The Giants are through the rotation once. And while starting pitching in 2021 is a terribly nebulous enterprise and the sample size is small, I think it’s worth taking a moment to analyze the first go-around. Here’s what I thought about each of the San Francisco starter’s debuts and what I expect from all five moving forward: Kevin Gausman: 6.2 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 6 strikeouts, 2 hits, 2 walks, 11 whiffs vs. Seattle » Gausman’s opening night performance didn’t alleviate all of the concerns I carried into the season about him, but it quelled a few of them. Gausman’s velocity is down nearly two ticks from last year but that happened last year, too. It’s a long season, he’ll work his way back up to 95 miles per hour. Even with a lesser fastball, Gausman was firing strikes, posting a 42 percent CSW (Called Strike Plus Whiff Rate) against the Mariners. Yes, Seattle isn’t a juggernaut, but that’s really good. He was feeling it. So long as he has that fastball, he...

The Bears’ offer for Russell Wilson has been revealed, and the Seahawks were probably right to have said no. Russell Wilson has not asked the Seattle Seahawks to trade him, though his agent was quick to offer a hypothetical list of teams that would be desirable to go to. That list has one team left who might be open to the move. The Chicago Bears took note of being on Wilson’s list, and apparently made a significant offer before being rejected and left to pivot to Andy Dalton. The offers Seattle might entertain for Wilson are surely not far off from the kind of offers it would take for the Houston Texans to move Deshaun Watson. Franchise quarterbacks cost a premium, after all. On his show Wednesday morning, Dan Patrick revealed the Bears’ offer for Wilson. The 2021 All-Star weekend is taking place amid a lot of complications. There are players who are injured and others who are out due to COVID-19 contact tracing. One person who might find a silver lining in this would be Zion Williamson, for receiving a starting spot in the All-Star game.  Zion Williamson was voted by the fans as an All-Star for 2021 and Kevin Durant selected the Pelicans forward as his team’s reserve. But Joel Embiid was informed about his ineligibility to participate at the last moment which called for an alteration to the starting five.  Zion Williamson makes history as one of the All-Star Game’s youngest starters Zion Williamson truly deserves his first All-Star selection. The Pelicans sophomore has been extraordinary with his scoring and rebounding. However, the pandemic’s complications have earned him starting rights in the All-Star game as well!  There haven’t been many players who have started an ASG at just 20 years old. In fact, Luka Doncic last year became the All-Star game’s youngest starter in 15 years at the age of 21!  Now, Williamson...
Minnesota would receive $4.72 billion from the federal government — plus additional money in more targeted programs — under the latest COVID-19 relief bill expected to pass Congress and be signed by President Biden by the end of the week. Of that total, $2.6 billion will go directly to the state government while $2.1 billion will go to local governments in Minnesota. A separate allocation of $20 billion will be sent to the nation’s tribal governments. The money sent directly to state and local governments will pay for costs related to pandemic responses. Not only is the amount of that money significantly more than the amount allocated under the federal CARES Act passed in the spring of 2020 — $350 billion compared to $150 billion — its uses are also less restrictive. The most significant change contained in the pending bill, dubbed the American Rescue Plan, is a provision that states and local governments, as well as tribal governments, can use the new federal dollars to make up for lost revenue from the recession caused by the pandemic. Minnesota has...

Kanye Wests Most Extravagant Gifts for Kim Kardashian Work for Yourself? Here’s How to Reduce Self-Employment Taxes The All-Star starters were announced, with ballots from the media counting as 25% of the formula. The reserves will be announced next week, followed by captains LeBron James (West) and Kevin Durant (East) selecting teams — the format from the past few seasons. Here’s the ballot this writer submitted as starters as well as selection for the reserves in both conferences: West All-Stars starters: Frontcourt: LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers: The narrative is turning for LeBron to win his fifth MVP, since the campaign began last season. But his play has been excellent in year 18, controlling a game like no one else. The numbers (25.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 7.9 assists) are easy to yawn at, only because he’s been doing it so well, for so long. A no-brainer here. Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets: Another no-brainer, as the Joker has taken a massive leap as a scorer while nearly averaging a triple-double until recently. The Nuggets have struggled with consistency, but Jokic has...
So the Democrats have pushed open the door. The Senate passed—at 5:34 Friday morning, 51-50, strict party line—a budget resolution that clears the way to passage, probably next month, of Joe Biden’s COVID relief bill. It may not be exactly $1.9 trillion, but it looks like it’ll be something close to that. First of all, please note: Working in harmony here were President Biden; Bernie Sanders, who as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee was in charge of seeing this thing through; Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema, who voted to move the resolution along; Vice President Kamala Harris, who cast the tie-breaking vote, and every other Senate Democrat, along with key figures from Biden’s economic team like Jared Bernstein and Heather Boushey. There were conflicts around the edges, about the minimum wage, but there may be room yet to work out a compromise. The point is, everyone was in the engine room shoveling coal together (I wonder why I chose a coal metaphor…). But there’s a bigger historical point here. If the Democrats pass a one-point-whatever-trillion dollar stimulus package, the...
With the UK now in its third lockdown, many bored Britons have spent their time cooped up at home refining their baking skills. One of the most notoriously difficult things to bake at home is sourdough bread, due to the fact that it relies on a 'starter' – a live culture of flour and water. If you're struggling to perfect your sourdough starter, help is at hand, as scientists have analysed 500 samples to understand what makes the perfect starter. The findings indicate that starters containing acetic acid – a common ingredient used in over a quarter of recipes – tend to result in more vinegary dough that doesn't rise as well as those without. One of the most notoriously difficult things to bake at home is sourdough bread, due to the fact that it relies on a 'starter' – a live culture of flour and water WHAT IS SOURDOUGH BREAD? Sourdough is naturally leavened bread, which means it doesn’t use commercial yeast to rise.  Instead, it uses a ‘starter’ – a fermented flour and water mixture that contains wild...

Ben Roethlisberger won’t play in Week 17 for the Steelers against the Browns. Pittsburg (12-3) can’t secure a first-round bye, and that’s enough for Mike Tomlin to have decided his top quarterback won’t play. Mason Rudolph will start instead as the Browns (10-5) try to secure their first playoff berth since 2002. Tomlin suggested most Steelers starters would still play, but the 38-year old Big Ben will not. “The vast majority of guys that have been playing, will be playing,” Tomlin said early in Week 17. Why is Ben Roethlisberger sitting out vs. Browns? The Steelers entered Week 17 knowing they couldn’t get the lone first-round bye in the AFC since the Chiefs already clinched it in Week 16.  “We’re not going to be that team (with the bye),” Tomlin acknowledged Tuesday. “We made that bed, and so we’re prepared to lay in it. That’s the most significant variable for us, and so with that being said, given an opportunity to airmail a player or two to the postseason, we will.” Tomlin noted that the Steelers wouldn’t be sitting all...
5 low-cost starters that make sense for the Yankees By: Andres Chavez December 23, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Yankees need to bring one or two additional pitchers to the roster, as their depth was diminished by the departure of Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, and J.A. Happ, plus Luis Severino’s Tommy John surgery. Here are some cheap alternatives still floating around in the free agent market: Adam Wainwright Adam Wainwright was a top-notch starter from 2007 to 2015, after a fantastic season as a reliever for the World-Series winning Cardinals in 2006. He then started to decline in 2016 and was a 4.00+ ERA pitcher until 2019. However, in the shortened version of the 2020 campaign, the man with the beautiful curveball finished with a 3.15 ERA (4.11 FIP) in 65.2 frames. The sample is small, but he was very impressive and is now a free agent after earning a $2 million salary. He is now 39, but the Yankees can consider a one-year deal if he doesn’t return to St. Louis....
With the Giants’ bullpen desperately needing a breather, left-hander Tyler Anderson turned in one of the most important performances of the 2020 season on August 22. Anderson tossed nine innings of three-hit ball, holding the Arizona Diamondbacks to one run in a 5-1 victory that would go down as the best game for any Giants pitcher this year. Less than four months later, the Giants passed up the chance to keep Anderson with the organization. The club announced Wednesday that it had non-tendered Anderson, who was projected to earn between $2.4 and $4.3 million in 2021 according to MLB Trade Rumors. The decision comes at a point in the offseason when the franchise is searching far and wide for ways to add starting pitching, so it was mildly surprising to see Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi turn down the opportunity to keep a league-average lefty with the franchise. The 2019-20 season was shaping up to be historic for the Atlantic 10. Dayton was primed to become just the second A-10 team to reach the Final Four, joining UMass in 1996, and possibly the first to win a national championship. But due to the coronavirus shutdown, the Flyers will never know. Dayton now must replace national player of the year Obi Toppin. Anthony Grant’s team will be led by Jalen Crutcher, but the Flyers are not the preseason favorites to win the conference. Coming off a 24-win season, Richmond is the Atlantic 10 pick. The Spiders were set to return all five starters but lost guard Nick Sherod (12.7 ppg) in the preseason with a torn ACL. Instead Richmond will be led by senior guard Jacob Gilyard. That is the theme of the A-10 this season: senior guards. The top five players in the conference are senior guards. OAKLAND — At this rate, it would be surprising to see too many more left-handed pitchers on the mound for the deciding Game 3 of the AL wild card between the Oakland A’s and Chicago White Sox. White Sox leadoff hitter Tim Anderson joked that the A’s “haven’t done their homework” when they selected leftie Jesús Luzardo to start Game 1 of the series. The simple study is that the White Sox were 14-0 against left-handed starters this season. The A’s logic behind choosing Luzardo was the Sox hadn’t quite seen a left-hander like Luzardo this season. There was no practice for the second consecutive day — a team spokesman said it was not related to the rash of false positive tests incurred by some other teams — but Jon Gruden saw to it players were issued jerseys of Raiders legends for a walkthrough which was closed to the media. “Gru loves to bring back the old players, loves to keep the Raider tradition going,” tight end Foster Moreau said in a Zoom teleconference. Moreau wore No. 88, previously worn by Raymond Chester in his second tour with the Raiders. Darren Waller was in No. 46 (Todd Christensen) and Jason Witten received No. 87 (Dave Casper). Fullback Alec Ingold, who wore Mark VanEeghen’s No. 30, said teammate Josh Jacobs was thrilled to wear Bo Jackson’s No. 34. “He was pretty pumped about that,” Ingold said. “I think he snuck his jersey shirt out. I don’t think he gave that one back.” Other numbers...

New York Yankees: Just how great has Gerrit Cole been for the Bombers? By: Alexander Wilson August 15, 2020 PrevPreviousNew York Yankees: Gerrit Cole living up to early expectations ShareTweet0 SharesThe New York Yankees are 7-0 on the season at home, showing how dominant they are when featuring in the Bronx. However, starter Gerrit Cole continued his tour of perfection. Cole has 20 straight wins in the MLB, earning his last one of the Boston Red Sox 10-3 on Friday night. He is currently 4-0 on the season, featuring a 2.76 ERA, recording 34 strikeouts, and allowing nine earned runs over 29.1 innings. “It was a tight game for a while,” Cole said. “We needed to make some pitches and we did.” Everyone around Cole notices how much quality he brings to the team. From his mental approach to his strict training regimen, he is the epitome of being a Yankee. “Best pitcher in the game and that’s what you’re seeing,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “You’re seeing a guy that’s...

Movie stars who had small TV roles before they were famous While some techies flee Silicon Valley, this Waymo engineer is doubling down and running for office NFL quarterback rankings: All 32 starters entering the 2020 NFL season By Steve Palazzolo PFF’s quarterback rankings are based on grading every player on every play and tapping into multiple years of data to project future performance. We go beyond last season’s performances, and the grading works to isolate each QB’s performance from that of his supporting cast, making for more effective projections. In a given year, quarterback performance is somewhat dependent on the pieces around him, and that’s why you annually see traditional statistics fluctuate for the middle class of signal-callers. This concept may be truer than ever, as a large chunk of quarterbacks land in “Tier 3” here, the tier that houses those who are not perennial top-10-caliber quarterbacks but are capable of top-10 production in a given year. Here are the PFF QB rankings heading into the 2020 season. © Provided by Yahoo! Sports Patrick Mahomes is the best...
Armed with a three-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on Monday, Giants starter Johnny Cueto had a chance to become the team’s first pitcher to earn a quality start this season. One of the league’s coldest sluggers, Nolan Arenado, ruined the opportunity. The Rockies’ five-time All-Star took a 91-mile per hour fastball up in the zone and hammered it halfway up the left field bleachers for a two-run home run. The four-seam fastball was one of only 21 Cueto threw on Monday against Colorado, but it was easily his worst pitch of the night. Arenado entered the game hitting .226 with no home runs and left it having played a key role in a five-run sixth-inning rally. “I think that was the one pitch I would assume Johnny wants back and (Chadwick) Tromp wants back as well,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “Up to that point I thought he had pitched an excellent game. All you can ask of a great starting pitcher is to come into Coors Field and shut down the opposition for five innings.” In...

For those not familiar, McGregor is easily the most recognized MMA fighter of all-time having been the first to even become a champion of two divisions at the same time. He’s currently retired from fighting but still in the forefront of many minds. There are other similarities between Bauer and McGregor tooBauer fits the McGregor personality perfectly as he’s just as outspoken as McGregor is. Just this weekend he let his feelings be known on Twitter in regards to the league postponing their game just eight minutes before it was set to start. “Postpone the game before starters start throwing or play through it,” he wrote. “You...
Reds right-hander Trevor Bauer on Saturday echoed what MLB players and managers have been saying in recent days about the unintended consequences of late-game postponements in response to positive COVID-19 tests and bad weather conditions. Pitchers in particular are routine-oriented, throwing for a specific amount of time on off days and before starts in order to maintain peak physical condition. Bauer is known to take his preparation techniques to the extreme as he constantly pushes to prove those who shunned him growing up wrong while staying healthy. So, warming up before a scheduled start only to be told the game would be moved to another date is frustrating. It’s been happening somewhat regularly this week as the coronavirus seeps into MLB clubhouses around the league. The Reds’ game against the Tigers on Saturday, which Bauer was slated to start, was postponed due to inclement weather rather than COVID-19 but irked Bauer nonetheless. “Postpone the game before starters start throwing or play through it,” Bauer wrote on Twitter. “You can’t postpone a game eight minutes before it’s supposed to start. Just because...
Players have experienced two regular season games in fan-less, silent stadiums. Chris Bassitt is already missing the drums, horns and buzz at the Oakland Coliseum. “This has shown us how truly important fans are,” Bassitt said to reporters on Sunday morning. “It’s very awkward, it really is.” Awkwardness is baked into Major League Baseball’s format, and the awkwardness is a small price to pay to keep up the social distancing that is paramount in order to keep the season moving. The rules require that players not playing that day sit in the stands to limit crowds in the dugout.  Bassitt has been sitting in the auxiliary dugout for the first two games of the season, and has already seen how it it can negatively impact players, particularly pitchers, looking to communicate with other pitchers. The bullpen is located under a tent further down the third base line, close to their normal bench near the mounds. The location down the third base line under that tent is a “worst case scenario” for any player hoping to get a good view of...
Aaron Boone wasn’t shy about Friday night’s intrasquad game being the opener of four “real’’ games in front of the Yankees’ Opening Day gig in Washington on Thursday. The final intrasquad game of spring training 2.0 was played before the Yankees traveled to Citi Field and topped the Mets, 9-3, on Saturday night. They play host to the Mets at Yankee Stadium on Sunday evening and will play the Phillies in The Bronx on Monday night. So, it was clear that starters were not going to play four straight games, and Boone left Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks, Gary Sanchez, Brett Gardner and Luke Voit at the Stadium to work out. “In my head I am looking at [Friday] night’s game was a game for us,’’ Boone said. “Four days where most of our guys will play three out of four. A couple might play in all four but for the most part looking at three out of four so those were the guys [Saturday].’’ Masahiro Tanaka is slated to throw a second bullpen session on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. If...
Aaron Boone wasn’t shy about Friday evening’s intrasquad recreation being the opener of 4 “actual’’ video games in entrance of the Yankees’ Opening Day gig in Washington on Thursday. The ultimate intrasquad recreation of spring coaching 2.zero was performed earlier than the Yankees traveled to Citi Subject and topped the Mets, 9-3, on Saturday evening. They play host to the Mets at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night and can play the Phillies in The Bronx on Monday evening. So, it was clear that starters weren’t going to play 4 straight video games, and Boone left Aaron Decide, Aaron Hicks, Gary Sanchez, Brett Gardner and Luke Voit on the Stadium to work out. “In my head I’m [Friday] evening’s recreation was a recreation for us,’’ Boone mentioned. “4 days the place most of our guys will play three out of 4. A pair would possibly play in all 4 however for essentially the most half three out of 4 so these had been the blokes [Saturday].’’ Masahiro Tanaka is slated to throw a second bullpen session on Sunday at Yankee...
Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs. (Photo by Focus on Sport/Getty Images) The Kansas City Chiefs very well could repeat as Super Bowl champions. Could life be any better for Kansas City Chiefs fans right now? The answer to that question would be a resounding no. Not only did they win the Super Bowl in February, but they made history with Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year contract extension and made things even sweeter by agreeing to terms with star defensive tackle Chris Jones ahead of the deadline. With 20 starters all set to return this campaign, the Chiefs surely look like a team poised to go on another Super Bowl run. Is it too early to starting thinking about a potential dynasty here? #Chiefs win the Super Bowl and then… 1) Restructure Sammy Watkins deal to keep him around2) Add Clyde Edwards-Helaire to the offense in Round 13) Extend Patrick Mahomes for 12 years4) Extend Chris Jones for 4 more years. And 20/22 starters are returning. Sheesh. — NFL Update (@MySportsUpdate) July 14, 2020 In terms of this offseason, goodness, general manager...
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Months ago, before going into quarantine back home in the Dominican Republic, Johnny Cueto took pride in being picked to start for the San Francisco Giants on opening day. Cueto is still lined up for the first game, on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, when the coronavirus-delayed season begins. After that, no telling when he’ll get the ball next. The animated right-hander knows that in an atypical year almost anything could happen — shortened rotations, openers, a creative mix. “Of course I’m open to it,” Cueto said. “This season’s going to be short, and we’re getting ready for that.” Even if managers and pitchers think they have a pretty good idea how ready they are, it probably won’t be clear until pitches get thrown considering the pandemic interrupted spring training in March, right when arms were getting built up for the long haul. “The pitching at the start of this is going to be a puzzle that none of us have ever faced,” Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “I can’t tell you what’s going to...

While I've certainly done my fair share of binge-watching the past few months (Insecure? Check. Outer Banks? Check. Never Have I Ever? Check.), my go-to activity when I need a screen-time break has been watercolor painting. It's a hobby I've dabbled in here and there since college, and rediscovering my pad of paper, paint set, and brushes has been an absolute lifesaver in these uncertain times. As soon as I dip a brush in water, swirl it around in one of the dried paints, and...
When spring training was forced to shut down in the middle of March, Randy Dobnak, Devin Smeltzer and Jhoulys Chacin were in the middle of auditioning for the fifth spot in the Twins’ rotation. Nearly four months later, that open spot seemingly no longer exists. The group has readjourned in Minneapolis, now auditioning for a different spot on the team. Aside from the five starters expected to begin the season in the rotation — Jose Berrios, Jake Odorizzi, Kenta Maeda, Rich Hill and Homer Bailey — the Twins are stretching out five more pitchers who are competing to make the team, which will have an expanded roster for the first month of the season. The rotation spot that was open during the spring has been filled by Hill, who is fully healthy after an offseason elbow surgery that was expected to keep him out until early June. With Hill back, some of the younger starters will have an opportunity — albeit a different one. “In a perfect world, obviously with the expanded roster the first...
Next1 of 4Prev postUse your ← → (arrows) to browse Five Packers starters are slated for free agency after 2020, and cap limitations likely mean these three will sign elsewhere. The Green Bay Packers found plenty of success in Matt LaFleur’s first season as head coach finishing 13-3 and reaching the NFC Championship after two consecutive losing seasons. However, after selecting Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Green Bay’s window to compete for a Super Bowl appears to be closing. With multiple key players facing contract years in 2020, Green Bay may see the upcoming season as its best chance to give Aaron Rodgers a second ring. Blue-chip pieces like Kenny Clark and David Bakhtiari will likely be re-signed, but their deals will take up the majority of the team’s free cap space. While Brian Gutekunst’s spending spree in the 2018 offseason paid dividends in 2019, the large contracts that Adrian Amos, Preston Smith, and Za’Darius Smith signed all but guaranteed that other starters would be shown the door in the immediate future. As a...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — When the Minnesota Twins signed Rich Hill from the bargain aisle of free agency last winter, they expected the left-hander to be available around midseason after his recovery from elbow surgery. Now the 40-year-old is on track to be ready right away, thanks to the virus outbreak that shoved the schedule back by four months and shrunk it to 60 games. The Twins, who open on the road against the Chicago White Sox on July 24, are setting up a rotation with Hill in it. The 15-year veteran faced hitters at Target Field on Monday, logging four simulated innings in his latest step forward in yet another injury comeback. “There’s a lot of people who put in the time and the effort and gave me their time to make sure that I can be in the best position possible to go out there and perform,” Hill said Tuesday on a video conference call with reporters. “I put in the time and put in the effort, and it’s definitely paid off. I feel great, and yesterday...
