The individuals whose nationalities have not been revealed were arrested in accordance with Iranian laws,  Iran's judiciary spokesman Masoud Setayeshi said in a regular news briefing, state media Mehr News reported. As Iran enters its ninth week of public unrest following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, the country's Revolutionary Court has in the past week issued its first slew of death sentences for their roles in one of the largest sustained challenges to Iran's regime since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had in earlier stages of the protest blamed foreign "enemies" for orchestrating what he termed as "riots." In late September, nine Europeans from France, Sweden, Italy, Germany among...

Last week’s election was a grim reminder of how much juice conservatives get from putting crime at the forefront of voters’ minds. Sure, Democrats are jubilant about holding onto their paper-thin Senate majority—but they lost the House. That happened in large part because, while the “red wave” turned out to be more of a red trickle in the country as a whole, there were parts of New York state where the election results really were a bit like the scene where the elevator doors open in The Shining. Republicans took all the House seats on Long Island, made huge inroads in the suburbs north of New York City, and Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul won a way-too-close race against a wacky election denier. The Republican campaign in New York was all about crime—and it was mostly a winner for them. Progressives, for their part, often seem unsure how to address the issue—especially the kind of progressives who are closest to my democratic socialist politics. All too often, the left’s instinct is to run away from talking about it or even...

The walls reportedly appeared to have "wiping marks," possibly signaling that someone cleaned the walls. Law enforcement also found a razor knife, several wrenches on a chest of drawers, paint brushes, paint cans, and cleaning supplies at the crime scene, according to the affidavit. Investigators also discovered a pair of jeans with the Texas identification card belonging to Ethan Kyle Myers in the pocket, police documents said. Police tracked down Myers and searched his car. Inside they found a shovel, plastic bags, a gallon of gasoline, a hammer, a tire tool, and a large rock in a trash bag smelling like gasoline, the affidavit stated. Investigators noted that the tip of the rock matched Hopson's head wounds, police said. On Thursday, police arrested Myers while he was allegedly hiding in the woods. On the day police found Hopson dead, Allen Price and Teresa Louviere visited the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to inform authorities that "Ethan Myers had done something to Sarah Hopson," the affidavit said. They claimed that Myers had been "acting strange," and noticed...

Republicans still haven’t officially won the House majority, but that hasn’t stopped Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from getting one step closer to ascending to the House’s most powerful post. Winning his party’s nomination for Speaker through a closed-door vote on Tuesday was McCarthy’s first step—and his easiest. He defeated his lone challenger, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), a leading House conservative, by a reported tally of 188 to 31. From here, however, the California Republican’s years-long quest for the Speaker’s gavel only gets harder. When the new Congress meets in early January, McCarthy will need to muster 218 votes on the House floor. Because of the GOP’s poorer-than-expected midterm performance, he will have a majority so thin that his margin for error on that all-important vote will be minimal—roughly 10 times smaller than the number of votes he lost on Tuesday. And some members claimed there were five other votes against McCarthy but not for Biggs, which would fit with the total number of votes cast in other votes Tuesday, meaning 36 Republicans may have already opposed McCarthy. Still, many insiders...
As we get older, we all hopefully gain a perspective about ourselves and the world around us. We might come to see our lives as part of something much bigger than ourselves. Problems that once seemed insurmountable might become the punchlines in our favorite stories. And the dudes who once seemed like the hottest stars of the movies we watched? They might suddenly seem utterly forgettable in the presence of Lee Pace. I’m talking, of course, about the show-stopping finale of the Twilight saga, Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part Two. The movie that dropped a closing combat scene so absurd that Marvel could never dream of replicating it. The surreal cinematic masterpiece that gave us that very weird laugh from Michael Sheen. The cultural milestone that, somehow, turns 15 years old today. If I’ve gained any perspective in this life, it’s the ability to say this: Once Lee Pace sauntered on screen in Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part Two, we no longer lived in a world where the question was, “Team Edward” or Team Jacob”? Once Lee Pace arrives, we...

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig said the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack waited too long to subpoena former President Donald Trump and predicted he would avoid testifying. The committee subpoenaed the former president last month in regard to his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Lawmakers said they had found “overwhelming evidence” Trump was “personally” responsible after many of his supporters violently crashed the certification of the 2020 presidential election results. “As demonstrated in our hearings, we have assembled overwhelming evidence, including from dozens of your former appointees and staff, that you personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-part effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and to obstruct the peaceful transition of power,” an Oct. 21 statement attributed to Reps. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) read. Trump was ordered to speak under oath and to produce records the committee said were relevant to its investigation. “The subpoena to Mr. Trump requires the production of documents to the Select Committee by November 4 and to appear for deposition testimony beginning on or about...
A growing number of problems at Twitter, from replies not loading to retweets not working, along with the 'brain drain' from recent layoffs - will eventually lead to a breakdown of the social network, according to an engineer who works there and share his views anonymously with a tech publication. 'Sometimes you’ll get notifications that are a little off,' one engineer currently working at Twitter, who’s concerned about what's happening at the platform after vast swathes of his colleagues who were previously employed to keep the site running smoothly were fired, told MIT Technology.  Not long after Elon Musk laid off about half of Twitter's 7,500 employees in a bid to cut costs after his $44 billion purchase, users noticed a range of problems that seemed to be related to backend issues with the code that powers it. 'The larger catastrophic failures are a little more titillating, but the biggest risk is the smaller things starting to degrade,' Ben Krueger, a site reliability engineer who has more than two decades of experience in the tech industry, told the technology publication. Marcos Elihu Castillo Ramirez | iStock | Getty Images For some individuals, signing up for Medicare hasn't translated into coverage starting right away. That's poised to change: Beginning next year, current months-long delays in certain Medicare enrollment situations will be eliminated. Additionally, would-be beneficiaries who missed signing up when they were supposed to due to "exceptional circumstances" may qualify for a special enrollment period. Such delays can mean facing a gap in health insurance — which in turn may translate into either being unable to get needed care due to financial constraints or paying out of pocket for care, whether planned or an emergency. Getty The Green Bay Packers have finally parted ways with second-year wide receiver Amari Rodgers. The Green Bay Packers have dealt with a ton of special teams miscues over the last couple of seasons, but general manager Brian Gutekunst finally decided to part ways with one of the team’s biggest culprits in that phase of the game. After yet another fumble in the Week 10 win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Packers announced on Tuesday, November 15th that they had released second-year wide receiver Amari Rodgers. The team made the announcement via Twitter, along with other social media platforms. In a surprise move, the Packers also parted ways with second-year running back Kylin Hill, who had just been activated after dealing with a torn ACL from the 2021 season he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals. Packers fans had been expressing their frustration with Rodgers, who had his seventh career fumble in less than two seasons. At some point, the Packers finally decided that it was no longer worth keeping the second-year receiver on the roster, despite being such...

Cody Whitehair is the second-longest tenured player on the Chicago Bears roster behind long snapper Patrick Scales. Whitehair is in his seventh season in the league, all of which he has played with the Bears, and he has been as effective this season as he has been previously. Whitehair has a 68.8 pass block grade from Pro Football Focus to go with a 65.8 run block grade so far this season. In 152 pass block snaps played at left guard this year, Whitehair has not surrendered sack or a QB hit, allowing just six total pressures. The veteran O-lineman signed a five-year, $52 million contract extension heading into the 2019 season, but next offseason is the first opportunity the Bears will have to part ways with Whitehair and save money, as the cap savings would be greater than his dead cap hit in 2023. Former Vice President Mike Pence in an exclusive interview with ABC news anchor David Muir on Sunday's edition of World News Tonight condemned the incendiary rhetoric through which he was personally targeted by then-President Donald Trump during the January 6th, 2021 insurrection at the United States Capitol. Pence refused to go along with Trump's scheme to reject President Joe Biden's Electoral College victory in the 2020 election because he determined that he had no constitutional authority to do so. Trump, who was desperate to hold onto power, reacted with a Twitter post that essentially labeled Pence as a coward. Speaking with Pence inside his Indiana residence, Muir recalled that "members were barricaded inside the House chamber, and in the middle of it all, you can see that the president has tweeted. 2:24 p.m., the president tweets: 'Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done.'" Mike Pence has admitted he was angry at Donald Trump when the then-president accused him of cowardice and set the mob on him on January 6, describing Trump's actions as 'reckless'. Pence, who served as Trump's vice president, told ABC News in his first television interview since the riot that Trump 'decided to be part of the problem'. On January 6 Pence, who refused Trump's demands to overturn the 2020 election, was inside the Capitol when it was breached. The mob erected a gallows with a noose outside the building, and Pence was at one point only 40 feet from the invaders: the January 6 Committee, investigating the insurrection, heard that Pence's life was in very real danger. Pence, 63, was asked by ABC's David Muir how he felt when Trump tweeted amid the riot: 'Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. Newsmax host Chris Salcedo declared the “Murdoch empire” part of the “Democrat-controlled press” on Friday as he offered a vehement defense for why former President Donald Trump is still great, despite what critics might say. “The Democrat-controlled press, including the Murdoch empire. They are saying it was Trump’s fault for killing the red wave,” Salcedo noted of the recent hammering Trump has received in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and to some extent on Fox News — all properties owned by conservative billionaire Rupert Murdoch. Newsmax has long sought to be a rival of the rating’s dominant Fox News in conservative media, but has yet to find much of an audience. “Well, it may be a surprise to a lot of folks out there, but their narrative doesn’t fit the numbers of Trump’s 25 Senate endorsements so far: 17 wins, four losses and four awaiting results,” he added, glossing over Trump-backed candidates far underperforming other Republicans in multiple races. “For the House of Representatives, 162 endorsements. There have been 142 wins, ten losses and ten awaiting results....

By Lindsey Bahr | Associated Press The devil works in public relations in ” Spirited,” a new spin on “A Christmas Carol” starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. With songs by “The Greatest Showman” duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, big ensemble dance numbers choreographed by Chloe Arnold and special effects galore, “Spirited” it is a maximalist affair that spares no expense in its heart-on-sleeve efforts to entertain. The sincerity isn’t necessarily a bad thing: If you’re going to make a holiday-themed musical on Apple’s dime, you might as well go all out, right? You’d also think that if you’re going to make a big movie musical, a genre that it seems every top filmmaker dreams of getting a chance to do, that you wouldn’t feel the need to have someone make a joke about it every time another character is about to burst into song. But that is the paradox of “Spirited,” which wants to be everything to everyone. The most egregious sin, though, is the fact that no one seems entirely sure of how to shoot a big,...
Two years ago, Zac Efron grew a great beard and began traveling the world in search of sustainable solutions to the man-made problems that plague our environment. Part-travel series, part-nature documentary, and part-brand extension, Down to Earth Season 1 felt like a gentle balm for a terrified public when it debuted on Netflix months into the COVID-19 pandemic. It was an earnest, grounded, occasionally goofy globe-trotting expedition into conservation, wellness, ayahuasca, and eco-friendly chocolate—but it was Efron’s light-hearted narration that proved to be the real treat. On Friday, we can all come Down to Earth once again, as Netflix debuts eight new episodes, all of which clock in at about 40 minutes. Whereas our previous chapter filmed before the pandemic, this one shot through the thick of it—so rather than travel the world in search of different perspectives, Efron, along with his co-host and wellness expert Darin Olien and their team, spend Season 2 drilling down on one wild, wild country: Australia. This season feels more focused than the last. That might be due, in part, to the fixed location...
Authorities announced that a 64-year-old man has admitted to his role in an $800,000 elder fraud scam where he targeted victims in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the surrounding regions. Michael Odell Anderson, 64, of Crystal Beach, Florida, and Dun Lorring, Virginia, pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, in relation to his participation in an elder fraud scam, the Department of Justice announced this week. Between April 2020 and December 2020, officials said that Anderson conspired with others to persuade elderly victims to give them thousands of dollars under false pretenses.  Specifically, members of the conspiracy called elderly victims posing as police officers, lawyers, or relatives, then convinced victims to send money for the purported legal expenses of a loved one, generally a grandchild, who had been incarcerated in connection with a car accident or traffic stop involving a crime. If a victim fell for it and provided cash, the conspirators then continued to take advantage of them, finding new fabricated reasons for them to keep paying out, all while still alleging they...

PITTSBURG — In the first filing as part of a federal and state criminal investigation into a dozen Bay Area law enforcement officials, the Contra Costa District Attorney has charged an ex-Pittsburg officer with illegally possessing and selling two assault rifles, new court records show. Armando Montalvo, 28, was charged Thursday with four felonies for allegedly possessing two AR-15 rifles and selling them to two individuals. The charging documents claim the transactions happened in November 2019, but authorities say the crimes weren’t discovered until this year, when Antioch and Pittsburg officers came under investigation for alleged civil rights violations involving uses of force. Montalvo was sworn in as a Pittsburg officer in 2015. He resigned from the department this year, after being placed on administrative leave in connection with the investigation. In 2021, his last full year as an officer, he received $146,434 in salary and benefits, according to public records. Authorities have secured an arrest warrant for Montalvo, who is expected to turn himself in. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment. The charges are only the...
Getty Austin Ekeler during the 49ers and Chargers game played on September 30, 2018 in Carson. The NFL realm knows Kyle Shanahan as an offensive whiz and installing his blueprint on that side of the football. He’s not one to implement defensive strategies. However, that’s not stopping the sixth-year head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from thinking about two dynamic offensive options his team will contend with this Sunday, November 13 when the Los Angeles Chargers roll up to Levi’s Stadium. The 5-3 Chargers will have in tow their own versatile Swiss-Army knife target and their version of Christian McCaffrey in running back Austin Ekeler. Then, there’s the man who makes the Charger offense operate in dual-threat passer and 2021 Pro Bowler Justin Herbert. Shanahan addressed both during his presser with the Bay Area media on Wednesday, November 9. On ‘Hardest Part’ of Planning for Former Undrafted RB Shanahan is already getting used to “Run CMC” and Deebo Samuel handle a variety of roles and delivering breakout plays in the process in Santa Clara. WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court heard arguments on Wednesday on a case based in part on a lawsuit filed by a Minnesota couple that would determine tribal rights in the adoption of Native American children. The Supreme Court’s decision in the case could also threaten other laws protecting tribes, including those relating to land, water rights and – more broadly – tribal sovereignty. That’s why the case has galvanized Indian country. After several hours of oral arguments Wednesday, several justices, including both Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett – who both have adopted children – were skeptical of the law at the center of the case that mandates states give  preference to the placement of Indian children who need foster care or are up for adoption with members of a tribe or a tribal entity. Kavanaugh said the justices had to weigh “on the one hand, the great respect for tribal self-government for the success of Indian tribes with Indian people” and the ” recognition of the history of oppression and discrimination against tribes and people”  against...
