They hadn’t thought about it because I guess no one has ever raised the flag with them,” said Rawlings. “Then we couldn’t even get a caregiver to come in in the evenings because we were all exposed and no one wanted to come in and work, obviously,” said Rawlings’ roommate and live-in caregiver Aleathea Simmons. To make matters worse, Rawlings said by the time he arrived in the ambulance, he was 10 minutes past his appointment time and everyone had...

Q: My wife was stopped at a traffic light on a four-lane road in a left-turn only lane. All of a sudden, she heard sirens and saw flashing lights in the rear-view mirror. The lane to the right of her was occupied, and the driver there was also stopped at the light. She looked at oncoming traffic and thought it was safe to turn to get out of the way. She made the turn, and ended up crashing into the side of the ambulance. The ambulance driver was driving on the wrong side of the road, set off by a double yellow line, going at a pretty good speed through a busy intersection against a red light. Our car was totaled. Like Mr. Roadshow’s Facebook page for more questions and answers about Bay Area roads, freeways and commuting. The policeman told us that he would have to give my wife a ticket because the ambulance had the right of way, even though it was proceeding through a red light. Please tell me your thoughts. It's an open secret among Americans that calling for an ambulance is a financial gamble. According to a recent study, 71% of ambulance providers don't take the patient's insurance. That same study found that 79% of patients who took a ground ambulance could be on the hook for an average fee of $450 after their insurance paid out. By comparison, air ambulances can cost the average patient $21,700 after the insurance pays out. These surprise bills can be a huge problem, especially when nearly four in 10 Americans would have to borrow money to cover an unexpected $1,000 emergency. Like the rest of the health-care industry, ambulance operators are feeling intense financial pressure during the coronavirus crisis, and that's causing many municipalities to raise service fees. Watch the video above to learn why ambulance services cost so much in the United States and what's being done to solve the problem.Watch more:How Germany's universal health-care system compares to the United StatesRelated Tags Health care industry Health insurance Economy United States
