Hed: Phamaly Matters Dek: The disability-affirmative theater troupe finds ways to adapt during the pandemic. By Khaleel Hayes This summer, Denver's Phamaly Theatre Company had big plans to produce Alice in Wonderland, with original music by rapper Kalyn Heffernan of Wheelchair Sports Camp. Those were scuttled when COVID-19 forced artistic director Regan Linton and managing director Sasha Hutchings to postpone. Now, like most theater groups, the company, whose name stands for Physically Handicapped Amateur Music Actors League, is trying to figure out how to continue offering productions and stay afloat through coronavirus closures. Part of carrying on is finding a new way to host the troupe's annual fundraiser, Phamaly’s Big Night, which will take place virtually at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 18. The company hopes to raise at least $180,000 to make up for lost revenue. But while donations are encouraged, the fundraiser is free and will stream live on Phamaly’s YouTube channel. Cardi B and Candace Owens engaged in a series of harsh exchanges on social media on Sunday after the conservative commentator called the Grammy-winning rapper ‘illiterate’ and an ‘embarrassment’ to black people. The feud began on Sunday evening when Owens, 31, shared a clip of her appearance on The Ben Shapiro Show, in which she said slammed Democratic nominee Joe Biden for taking part in an interview with Cardi B - real name Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar – for Elle last month. Owens said it was ‘one of the biggest insults’ to black voters that Biden decided to do the interview with an ‘illiterate rapper’, rather than someone who could ask the ‘tough questions’. The Republican went on to say that the former Vice President thinks ‘black people are stupid’ and likened his interview with Cardi B to Donald Trump being interviewed by Justin Bieber. Kanye West has missed the deadline to officially run for president in South Carolina in November – and never even applied to make the ballot in the state where he held his first campaign rally. 'The petition deadline has passed for the 2020 general election and the state election commission did not receive a petition from Kanye West,' Chris Whitmire, a spokesman for the South Carolina Board of Elections, told reporter Ben Jacobs. 'There are no exceptions to the deadline,' Whitmire asserted. The comments come after West held a rally in North Charleston, South Carolina on Sunday, just two weeks after announcing his intentions to run for president. West spent the required fee to make the ballot in Oklahoma last week and filled out the proper Federal Election Commission paperwork to officially make a run for the White House in November. According to the forms, West is running as an independent for BDY, which he says stands for the Birthday Party because 'when we win, it's everybody's birthday.' The rapper, however, won't even be able to run for president in...
Kanye West has reportedly decided to call it quits on his run in the 2020 Presidential election, less than two weeks after he first marked his entrance into the race.   According to the Intelligencer, West hired campaign staff who were looking into getting his name listed as a third-party candidate in Florida and several other states, but the team has now been told the bid is off.  Steve Kramer, an election strategist hired by West to focus on getting his name on the ballot in Florida and South Carolina, told the publication on Thursday, 'He’s out'. Yet, West's bid was serious and there were 180 people working in the ground in Florida when the decision was made to call the effort off, Kramer said.  The rapper, 43, has not publicly commented on whether his run for the presidency is continuing.  Kanye West's bid for the presidency has allegedly come to an end, just ten days after it began  West, pictured above with President Trump in 2016, announced his bid against Trump and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in a...

For many, the only image of George Floyd they have is of the man who pleaded “I can’t breathe” as Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck until he died. But Houston rapper OMB Bloodbath knew the man before he became a fatal victim of police brutality. In a solemn essay for Billboard, the 26-year-old MC, whose real name is Alexandra Nicks, reflected on her friendship with Floyd. “He was everyone’s uncle and godfather,” said OMB Bloodbath, who knew Floyd since she was a child, growing up in the same Third Ward neighborhood of Houston as him. “If you came up in that area, you knew who he was. He was just a very warm-hearted, nurturing dude. Anybody who was young and coming up, doing something with their lives, he made it a purpose to give them encouragement.” OMB Bloodbath — who went viral with the #SoGoneChallenge and has been championed by none other than Missy Elliott — shared a special memory of Floyd: “They used to go out and gather up all the chairs and have church in...
