THE DAYS of a 90-minute football match as we know it seem long gone. Added on time has been a major trend at this World Cup with England's opener with Iran lasting an incredible 117 minutes and 16 seconds. 3Former Premier League ref Mark Halsey writes exclusively for Sun SportCredit: Action Images - Reuters 3He has a revolutionary new way to stop time-wasting rather than playing loads of additional timeCredit: Reuters There are several traditional reasons for it. Injuries, VAR, subs, penalties and yellow/red cards. But Fifa made a clear directive before the start of the tournament that they wanted to clamp down on time-wasting - and they have stuck to their word. Hence the extra time played. Players winding down the clock has been a big source of frustration within the game. And if we see more play on the field then it can only be a good thing because the product will improve and the fans will have a better experience. Jean Carroll, a writer and advice columnist who says he raped her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. When Carroll decided to come forward—describing the alleged assault in a book excerpt in 2019—Trump had been president for two years, and the statute of limitations to bring criminal charges or a lawsuit against him had long since passed. Carroll sued Trump for defamation instead, arguing that he’d...
by Evan Stambaugh   A new report shows how Minnesota’s proposed social studies standards are “unacceptably politicized” and “deficient.” Earlier this week the Center of the American Experiment published a report by historian and academic Wilfred McClay titled “Minnesota’s Academic Standards Among the Nation’s Worst.” McClay, tasked to evaluate the third draft of the Minnesota Department of Education’s K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies, concluded that “the standards are so deeply flawed that mere revision will fail to make them compatible with the fundamental aims of civic education.” “Can these Standards be repaired, adjusted, and made compatible with the fundamental aims of civic education as it has been? I do not think so,” McClay wrote in the report. “I think they are so fundamentally flawed that the only solution is to jettison them and start over, using the 2004 Standards as a guideline for how the next revision should be done.” Furthermore, McClay called for the total “elimination” of the standards’ “Ethnic Studies” component, asserting that “nothing will be lost” and “much will be gained” by following this recommendation. The 18-page report argues that the proposed...
Discoveries in the fields of human origins, paleoanthropology, cognitive science, and behavioral biology have accelerated in the past few decades. We occasionally bump into news reports that new findings have revolutionary implications for how humanity lives today—but the information for the most part is still packed obscurely in the worlds of science and academia. This article was produced by the Independent Media Institute. Some experts have tried to make the work more accessible, but Deborah Barsky’s new book, Human Prehistory: Exploring the Past to Understand the Future (Cambridge University Press, 2022), is one of the most authoritative yet. The breadth and synthesis of the work are impressive, and Barsky’s highly original analysis on the subject—from the beginnings of culture to how humanity began to be alienated from the natural world—keeps the reader engaged throughout. Long before Jane Goodall began telling the world we would do well to study our evolutionary origins and genetic cousins, it was a well-established philosophical creed that things go better for humanity the more we try to know ourselves. Barsky, a researcher at the Catalan Institute...

Forensic anthropologists with the New Jersey State Police will examine the bones to confirm their origin. Scientists are conducting additional studies to discover the life history and health of the remains. They hope to use that information to reach out to their descendants. After the remains have been tested, they will be moved to another site. “It’s an extremely rare find to have what we believe to be a Hessian mass grave burial. I can’t think of another site that has something like this. It’s an opportunity to study who these individuals were, where they came from, why they were here. So, the opportunity to tell their story is something I think is really compelling as a public historian,” stated Dr. Janofsky.
Every day, around a thousand people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. And although those dealt this blow come from all walks of life, they will be united by one terrifying question: is there a cure? The answer isn’t simple because cancer isn’t a simple disease — there are more than 200 types. Though they share a common mechanism — the rapid division of abnormal cells, which then destroy healthy tissue — there are multiple variables, from genetics to where the disease occurs in the body, that help determine your chance of survival. Consequently some forms — such as skin or testicular cancer — have, when detected early, a ten-year survival rate of 98 per cent. For others the prognosis is more bleak. For pancreatic cancer — which is very difficult to detect, meaning it has more time to spread and become resistant to treatment — the five year survival rate is 7 per cent, with 90 per cent of patients dying within two years of diagnosis. Yet with so much global brain power devoted to waging war on...
The company that produced the M4 DD7 used by Salvador Ramos to kill 19 schoolkids and two teachers in Uvalde is marketing a new weapon right out of a mass shooter’s dream. “More control, more comfort, more flexibility,” the Daniel Defense website says in introducing its latest product. “It’s what you get with our revolutionary RIII rifles.” The site reports that the RIII’s lower receiver—its trigger and hammer assembly—is the “same you’ve come to love, trust, and expect from Daniel Defense, only now fully ambidextrous.” The major difference seems to be that the rail system—the sight and accessory mount—is both lighter and more durable. “The light-weight, heavy hitting RIII is ready for anything,” the company says. As with its other AR-15 style rifles, the company appeals to the civilian couch commando by noting that its original rifle rail was “developed for SOCOM.” Implied is that you do not need to be told that SOCOM stands for Special Operations Command; their customers are supposed to be in the know. At least Daniel Defense has been upfront about selling what are...
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard is building a massive new support ship near the strategic Strait of Hormuz as it tries to expand its naval presence in waters vital to international energy supplies and beyond, satellite photos obtained by The Associated Press show. The construction of the Shahid Mahdavi provides the Guard a large, floating base from which to run the small fast boats that largely make up its fleet designed to counter the U.S. Navy and other allied forces in the region. Its arrival, however, comes after a series of setbacks for both the Guard and Iran’s regular navy, including the loss of its largest warship less than a year earlier. As negotiations over Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers also founder, further confrontations at sea between Tehran and the West also remain a risk. “They are looking beyond the Persian Gulf and into the blue waters of the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea and the northern Indian Ocean,” said Farzin Nadimi, an associate fellow at the Washington Institute for Near-East...

House Republicans and Democrats joined forced on Thursday to demand that President Joe Biden give them more information on nuclear deal talks with Iran, claiming that aspects of the ongoing negotiations are already 'highly concerning.' A bipartisan group of 11 Democrats and 10 Republicans sent Biden a letter urging him to reach a 'longer and stronger' agreement with Tehran than the US government did under former President Barack Obama. It comes as reports indicate the months-long indirect talks in Vienna have hit a road bump after Western diplomats indicated they were nearing the end of discussions. The Trump administration unilaterally withdrew the US from the multi-national Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. Since then Iran has been building up its nuclear capabilities at an alarming rate. The 2015 deal struck between Iran, the European Union and the five permanent members of the United Nations National Security Council -- which includes the US, Russia and China -- offered sanctions relief to Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program. 'Since the beginning of this Administration, we have hoped...
The Biden administration is weighing whether to remove the feared  Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from terror lists and to lift other sanctions as he tries to deliver a new nuclear deal. It is one of the most controversial concessions offered by Rob Malley, the State Department's special envoy to Iran, at a time when talks are in a critical phase. The Trump administration declared the IRGC to be a terrorist organization in 2019, accusing it of providing funding, training and equipment to other groups worth one billion dollars each year. Less than a year later, General Qasem Soleimani, the commander of its Quds force, was killed in a US drone strike. Details of the plan to delist the group emerged in a lengthy Twitter thread posted by former State Department appointee Gabriel Noronha, who said he had been authorized to reveal details of discussions by disgruntled former colleagues. 'This is a long and technical thread, but here’s what you should know: the deal being negotiated in Vienna is dangerous to our national security, it is illegal, it is illegitimate, and it...
Thousands of blood cancer patients could soon benefit from revolutionary ‘anti-cancer antibodies’, which cut the risk of relapse by a quarter and spare patients from the toxic effects of chemotherapy. Given as an infusion, the treatment uses artificial proteins which hunt out tumours in the body and carry chemotherapy drugs directly to cancer cells, destroying them. It has been described as a ‘Trojan horse’ drug and not only does this effect make it more potent than traditional treatments, but it is far more precise, saving healthy cells from damage. Experts have hailed the drug, called Polivy, the ‘biggest breakthrough in two decades’ for sufferers of one of the most common types of the disease who do not respond to traditional chemo. Results of a landmark trial into use of the drug published last week showed that those on the treatment were 25 per cent less likely than others to see their cancer return after two years. NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill Thursday establishing a statewide, newborn home nurse visitation program. CBS2’s Meg Baker spoke with a mother who said a visit like this saved her life. FORMULA ONE has revealed the redesigned car that will propel Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in their bid for the 2022 world title. A rule overhaul is scheduled for next season after years of Mercedes dominance, which could end just before the new car arrives. 6 Ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend, the drivers gathered on the grid to get a first public glimpse at their new wheels. In front of them was a radically overhauled aerodynamic setup that, in theory, will encourage overtaking. The current F1 cars have so much intricate bodywork - to create downforce that allows drivers to take corners quicker - but that causes turbulence. It means that cars behind cannot get close as the turbulent air causes them to lose grip and destroys their tyres in the process. The new cars have simple front wings and utilise the aerodynamic principle of 'ground effect', as the design of the underside of the car pulls it downwards. Therefore both front and rear wings have been rejigged, and fans will immediately notice that over-wheel...

Would you take a test to find out how old your immunity is, how old you really are on the inside? Perhaps you are a midlifer with an inner teen or, on the other hand, your shiny chassis might actually be hiding an old banger. Well, thanks to a new home blood test kit, you can. The glycanage test, designed by Professor Gordan Lauc, honorary professor of molecular biology at King’s College London, measures sugar molecules called glycans, a key part of our immune system. They can either be pro-inflammatory (cause inflammation) or anti-inflammatory. A strong immune system needs both. However, as we get older the balance becomes skewed and we have more of the inflammation-causing glycans. This creates a constant low-level inflammation that damages all our tissues, cleverly known as ‘inflammageing’. Professor Gordan Lauc of King's College London designed the GlycanAge test, which could be a good early warning system of common diseases (file image) The new test can tell you how much inflammageing you have. It then connects you with a doctor or nutritionist over Zoom, for personalised...

With Christmas just around the corner we will soon be scoffing lots of rich foods, which will make our tummies rumble even more than usual. Those grumbling, growling noises are the result of food, liquid, and gas passing through your stomach and into your small intestine. There is even a name for it, Borborygmi, a term coined more than 2,000 years ago by Hippocrates, an ancient Greek, also known as The Father of Modern Medicine. And now scientists have shown that these sounds can reveal insights into what is going on in the gut and may help diagnose common disorders. At least 15 million Britons have digestive problems, with around one in five of us suffering from the UK’s most common gut disorder: Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. Symptoms include pain, bloating, and either constipation or diarrhoea. Diagnosing IBS can be a lengthy and challenging process — as there is no specific test, doctors can only rule other things out, and as a result IBS may be missed or other conditions overlooked. Every year it seems the wildfires sweeping through California cannot get worse – until they do. The inferno currently devastating federal land just north of Sacramento, termed the August Complex Fire in Mendocino National Forest and ignited by a lightning strike three weeks ago, has already been classified as the Golden State's worst in history. Antibiotics are great, but they come with a serious downside. Over time, bacteria have developed defenses against many of the most commonly-used antibiotics, creating what scientists call “superbugs.” These antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a serious threat as they have the ability to run rampant and may have the potential to spread rapidly. Now, researchers from the University of Sheffield have invented what they say is a compound capable of killing the two subgroups of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The compound can attack both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, despite the two types of bacteria having differing cell wall structures. Fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria is obviously a big challenge for doctors. There are certain antibiotics that are used sparingly when a resistant bacteria is identified, but in using those, doctors also run the risk of giving the bacteria a chance to once again evolve a defense against the so-called “last resort” antibiotics. Of the two subgroups of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, gram-negative post the biggest problem. They are notoriously resilient to the most common treatment options, and as the researchers note in a press release, they had already...
