The 49ers added Christian McCaffrey a week and a half ago to help out their offense as a runner and a receiver. But his first touchdown for the Niners featured him throwing the ball. Early in the second quarter of the 49ers’ NFC West matchup with the Rams on Sunday, the Niners called upon McCaffrey to execute a trick play with Brandon Aiyuk, and it worked to perfection. He looped out to the right after the snap, staying behind Garoppolo on his route. Garoppolo hit McCaffrey with a backwards pass, meaning the running back was eligible to throw the ball forward. Aiyuk faked like he was going to block the Rams cornerback covering him, then bolted past the defender down the right sideline, wide open for McCaffrey to find him. The running back floated a pass and Aiyuk ran under it,...
SANTA CLARA — Jimmy Garoppolo’s awkward existence on the 49ers’ roster meant for a morning cameo Wednesday. Then he clocked out of work, before the first practice of training camp, all with the 49ers’ blessing. “He was in this morning doing the throwing program,” coach Kyle Shanahan said before practice. “He came in, did that, got out. We’ll stay in communication.” So goes the mutual understanding that Garoppolo is biding his time in the shadows while recovering from March shoulder surgery and while awaiting a potential trade or release. He, predictably, won’t be the only big-name player skipping practice. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel begins a potential “hold-in,” the terminology for reporting to camp but not participating in practice until a new contract is ratified. “Hopefully we can figure something out soon, but we’re in a good place today,” Shanahan said. Shanahan met before practice with Samuel, whose agent, Tory Dandy, and the 49ers’ front office are “talking nonstop right now. We’ll see what happene. I just had a great conversation.” Samuel, who’s entering the final year of his rookie contract,...
SANTA CLARA — Count Trey Lance among the shift managers coping with staffing shortages in today’s business climate. Of the 49ers’ seven Pro Bowl players last season, none participated in Tuesday’s organized team activities, and only one was present to watch, that being tight end George Kittle. “I miss those guys a lot,” Lance said. “Trent (Williams), Deebo (Samuel), Alex Mack, all those guys, and they’re just good guys to be around.” Lance issued no complaints, however, about toiling away with the B-list supporting cast. He is more at ease and seizing a leadership role that’s commanded from the starting quarterback job. The lack of veteran stars could make it easier for Lance’s transition to that marquee job. Still, coach Kyle Shanahan expects a calvary of veteran stars to show for mandatory minicamp June 13-15, and he included in that pack, somewhat surprisingly, Samuel, Williams and defensive end Nick Bosa. Some mainstays could be held out until training camp starts in late July, including Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner, who are dealing with minor, “lower-half” issues, Shanahan said. Mack is...
Getty Jimmy Garoppolo throws the ball against the Bengals on December 12, 2021. Jimmy Garoppolo used an expletive on Wednesday, January 5 to describe the pain in his thumb, telling the Bay Area media “F*** it, it hurts. I don’t know how else to describe it.” But now, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback — who watched Trey Lance guide the team to the 23-7 win over the Houston Texans to elevate the ‘Niners to 9-7 overall — is attempting to fire the football in the effort to start behind center for the 49ers’ crucial Sunday, January 9 road game in Inglewood. Jimmy Garoppolo threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 26-23 in overtime Sunday. Garoppolo completed five passes in the overtime drive, including a pair to tight end George Kittle, who was again San Francisco's offensive star. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM On the final play, Aiyuk dove to the pylon and was initially ruled short, but a replay gave him the touchdown and San Francisco (7-6) a critical win. Evan McPherson hit a 41-yard field goal in the opening possession of overtime to give the Bengals (7-6) a brief lead, their first of the day. San Francisco's Robbie Gould missed a 47-yard field goal with 4 seconds left in regulation that would have been a game-winner. That came after Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow found Ja'Marr Chase for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to claw back from a 20-6 deficit and tie the game with 1:19 left. Deebo Samuel rushed for another score for San Francisco. The Bengals had trouble getting out of their own way in the first half...
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Making a cross-country trip following a short week that included their most impressive victory of the season, the San Francisco 49ers had the potential for a letdown against Jacksonville. They instead delivered a beatdown. Sometimes they make a good play, we make mistakes and it doesn’t go our way. But that is how we always want to play a game like that.” Coming off a 31-10 stunner against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, the 49ers (5-5) traveled 2,700 miles, kicked off at 10 a.m. West Coast time and looked every bit like a playoff contender for the second time in six days. Jimmy Garoppolo threw two touchdown passes for the third consecutive week, and the San Francisco 49ers dominated Jacksonville 30-3 on Sunday for their third win in four games. He connected with Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle for scores. It was Kittle’s third TD in as many weeks. Deebo Samuel ran eight times for 79 yards...
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance replaced Jimmy Garoppolo in the first quarter against the Lions and wasted no time throwing a touchdown.  Welcome to the big show, Trey Lance. The No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft started Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions on the bench, but the San Francisco 49ers quarterback got his number called early on in Week 1. After Jimmy Garoppolo struggled to begin play, Kyle Shanahan wasted no time in going to Lance. The rookie rewarded his head coach by giving his team a 7-0 lead thanks to this touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield. This is Lance’s first-career touchdown. What a special moment. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Trey Lance’s bid to be the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback was a bit of a rollercoaster Sunday night, but the rookie rebounded from a rough start to keep his hopes alive. Lance, the third overall pick in April’s draft, threw two touchdown passes in a 15-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Lance played six series during the second and third quarters and finished 8 of 14 for 102 yards and an interception. READ MORE: Caldor Fire Burns 106,562 Acres And Destroys 403 Homes After struggling during joint practices against the Chargers on Thursday and Friday, Lance’s problems continued during the first three series. But he settled down during the final three drives, completing seven of his last eight passes for 93 yards, including both TDs. “I think this week was huge just for my development as a football player, not even necessarily for tonight, if that makes sense,” Lance said. “I think I learned so much this week getting to practice against another defense, getting to be around different guys and have a different...
SANTA CLARA — Trey Lance finally took off running, again and again, gladly showcasing the dynamic dual-threat talents that seduced the 49ers into drafting him as their quarterback of the future. How soon will he take Jimmy Garoppolo’s job? Could be anytime this season, maybe the one after, or so goes the no-open-competition mantra Kyle Shanahan pitched when training camp opened Tuesday. Practices like Saturday’s will expedite Lance’s onboarding process. After three practices as strictly a pocket passer who showed amazing restraint with his mobility, Lance took off out the gate Saturday, scrambling on his first snap of full-team drills, but only after seeing two receivers closely covered. Lance, an 1,100-yard rusher his only full season as North Dakota State’s starting quarterback in 2019, clearly had the green light to run Saturday. He scrambled on three other snaps, kept the ball for two zone-read runs, and, alas, did fumble an exchange in the backfield with running back JaMycal Hasty. ”We’ve all been waiting for it, waiting to see what he does when he takes off,”...
ESPN’s Adam Schefter does not think Jimmy Garoppolo gets traded by the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft. Even with the San Francisco 49ers expected to take a quarterback at No. 3 in the 2021 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Adam Schefter does not see Jimmy Garoppolo being traded over the weekend. Schefter reported that many teams have inquired about the 49ers quarterback, but as of Thursday morning, it does not seem like San Francisco will be dealing him ahead of the draft. One team that may have been in the market to trade for Garoppolo was the team who drafted him in the second round out of Eastern Illinois back in 2014: The New England Patriots. For now, Garoppolo is a 49er. Are the 49ers making the right decision by hanging onto Garoppolo throughout the draft process? Multiple teams are expected to contact the 49ers today to inquire about the availability of QB Jimmy Garoppolo, per sources. But as of early this morning, the chances of him being traded are, in the words of one source, “remote.” Let’s see...
The 49ers shook up April’s 2021 NFL Draft on Friday and landed in peak quarterback territory, but it may not mean the end of Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco — at least not yet. “Jimmy is here to stay. He’s our guy this year,” a 49ers source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Of course, the wording of that vote of confidence naturally raises the question: What about next year? The 29-year-old Garoppolo is under contract with the 49ers through 2022, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation about a potential return to the Patriots. That noise will only get louder if the 49ers plan to use their new No. 3 pick on a quarterback, like Ohio State’s Justin Fields or North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. The 49ers moved up the board Friday by trading the No. 12-overall pick, a 2021 third-rounder and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 to the Dolphins for the No. 3 pick, according to multiple reports. The Patriots, meanwhile, have re-signed Cam Newton, but the possibility of Garoppolo still looms nearly three and a half years after he...
Getty Aaron Donald was not having any of the talk about Deebo Samuel. Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald appeared to be a little salty after the team’s loss to the 49ers. After the game, Donald was asked what it was like preparing to defend a player like Deebo Samuel. Donald responded by asking “Who?” as if he did not hear the question. The reporter repeated the question, and Donald maintained that he did not know anything about the 49ers receiver. “Who’s that?” Donald asked. Samuel took to social media to have some fun after Donald’s comments went viral. The 49ers receiver posted a clip of Donald’s comments to his Instagram Story and tagged the Rams Pro Bowler. “[I don’t] think you hear me yet 3-0 against Rams,” Samuel noted on Instagram. Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers bounced back from a lopsided loss and showed the banged-up defending NFC champions aren't ready to pack it in quite yet. Garoppolo threw three TD passes in the first half and Jason Verrett’s first interception in more than four years helped preserve the lead, giving the 49ers a 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. “Whenever you get embarrassed like we did last week you can find out a lot about your team,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “Usually when stuff like that happens, guys either give in and try to hide or guys try to step up and get better.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Garoppolo got pulled at halftime last week in a 43-17 loss to Miami after struggling on a bum ankle, raising questions if the injury-riddled Niners (3-3) would be able to contend in the NFC West after back-to-back home losses to the Dolphins and Philadelphia. Jimmy Garoppolo’s two most recent fourth-quarter performances have been picked apart by every football analyst on Earth. So naturally, it’s time for O.J. Simpson, quarterback guru, to weigh in with his thoughts after a couple errant passes that derailed the 49ers’ comeback attempt in Sunday’s season-opening loss to the Cardinals. Simpson filmed himself Monday morning reacting to several storylines from Sunday’s opening NFL games, including the time-honored tradition of complaining about his fantasy football team (O.J.’s team suffered huge blows with injuries to Marlon Mack and Blake Jarwin, in case you were wondering). By the time he got to Jimmy G, he’d already made excuses for Tom Brady’s Buccaneers and eviscerated the culture of the Cleveland Browns after just one game under Kevin Stefanski. “I love my 49ers but Jimmy G, I don’t know what’s going on with you. I’ve just gotten over you missing [Emmanuel] Sanders for what should have been a Super Bowl-winning catch, but I watch you in the fourth quarter,”  he said. “C’mon, you had a guy wide open in the end...
