A Republican-led Congress may grow weary of cutting checks to Ukraine, GOP leader Kevin McCarthy warned as Congress has already offered some $66 billion since the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion.  'I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they're not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won't do it,' the Republican leader, who stands to cinch the speakership if his party takes back the House, told Punchbowl News in an interview published Tuesday.   'It's not a free blank check. And then there's the things [the Biden administration] is not doing domestically. Not doing the border and people begin to weigh that. Ukraine is important, but at the same time it can't be the only thing they do and it can't be a blank check.'  'I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they're not going to write a blank check to Ukraine. They just won't do it,' GOP leader Kevin McCarthy said  McCarthy's remarks come as Russian strikes over the past week have knocked out power for...
Ukraine's spy chief last night claimed that a coup to remove Vladimir Putin is already under way and that Russia would lose the war by the end of this year. Major General Kyrylo Budanov, 36, said he believed a turning point in the conflict will come later this summer and will eventually see Putin ousted from office. 'The breaking point will be in the second part of August,' General Budanov told Sky News.  'Most of the active combat will have finished by the end of this year. It will eventually lead to the change of leadership of the Russian Federation. This process has already been launched. 'As a result, we will renew Ukrainian power in all our territories.' It was also claimed yesterday by an unnamed Russian oligarch that Putin is 'very ill with blood cancer'. The oligarch - who has close ties to the Kremlin and named only as 'Yuri' to protect his identity - claimed a number of the health problems Putin is believed to be suffering from are linked to him having blood cancer.  Ukraine's spy chief says that...
(CNN)On May 8, Hong Kong is expected to usher in a new leader: John Lee, a police veteran-turned-security chief who will run, unopposed, for the city's top position as the only candidate backed by China's ruling party. The choice to endorse Lee -- a hardline security official known for overseeing heavy crackdowns on the city's massive pro-democracy protests in 2019 and who has little policymaking experience when compared to the city's past leaders -- suggests that national security may continue to be prioritized above all else in the years to come. Activists and scholars also say the move will only further hinder civil liberties and human rights, including one that has already come under fire: the city's embattled gender movement. "If John Lee adopts the Mainland China model of managing civil society, this may bring about a further onslaught of Hong Kong's once vibrant civil society," says Diana Fu, Associate Professor of political science at the University of Toronto. "In the mainland model, civil society groups that advocate for liberal rights -- including gender equality -- are seen as conduits...
Labour’s Deputy Leader Angela Rayner has accused Russia of previously carrying out a nuclear attack in Britain. In an effort to defend former hard-left leader Jeremy Corbyn’s apathy over the 2018 Salisbury Novichok incident — where Corbyn attempted to divert blame away from Moscow for poisonings attributed to Russian operatives by suggesting the government’s response should be “proportionate and based on clear evidence” — Rayner added to a growing collection of public blunders. “This was about… if the Russian state had done that, which we were looking at facts at the time, we didn’t know that at the time. When we did find out about that, it was an absolute disgrace that President Putin thought he could come on UK soil and use weapons, nuclear weapons, in that way,” Rayner said, apparently mistaking the nerve agent for a nuclear bomb. “It’s despicable that any nation thought they could come on foreign soil and use those types of weapons and it needed a strong, robust response,” Rayner continued, failing to correct herself. As of the time of writing Rayner had still...
In a Wednesday interview with NBC Nightly News's Lester Holt, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that World War III "may have already started." When asked if he shared concerns about certain actions triggering a world war, Zelensky said, "Nobody knows whether it may have already started. And what is the possibility of this war if Ukraine will fall, in case Ukraine will? It's very hard to say." "And we've seen this 80 years ago, when the Second World War had started ... nobody would be able to predict when the full-scale war would start," he added. Billionaire hedge funder Bill Ackman has claimed that 'WWIII has likely started already' and predicted that a broader military conflict with Russia may be inevitable after Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine.  Ackman, who has a long track record of making alarmist predictions, often as he is betting against the markets, issued his dire forecast in an extremely long series of tweets on Saturday. 'In January 2020, I had nightmares about the potential for a pandemic, but everyone seemed to think I was crazy. I am having similar nightmares now,' he wrote. Ackman famously appeared on CNBC in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and declared that 'hell is coming', calling for a 30-day national lockdown.  It later emerged that his firm, Pershing Square Capital, made $2 billion by betting against stocks that tanked as he delivered his doomsday predictions. Now, however, Ackman warns 'WWIII has likely started already, but we have been slow to recognize it.'   Billionaire hedge funder Bill Ackman has claimed that 'WWIII has likely started already' and predicted that a broader...
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday he is worried about the omicron and delta variants of the coronavirus creating a "tsunami of cases."  "I’m highly concerned that omicron, being more transmissible [and] circulating at the same time as delta, is leading to a tsunami of cases," he said at an online news conference.  WHO CHIEF WORRIED ABOUT 'TSUNAMI' OF OMICRON, DELTA COVID CASES Tedros noted that scenario would put "immense pressure on exhausted health workers and health systems on the brink of collapse." According to the agency, the number of COVID-19 cases recorded across the globe increased by 11% last week, and new cases in Europe accounted for more than half of the total, while those in the Americas rose 39%.  In Africa, there was a 7% increase, and the agency said in its weekly epidemiological report that the "overall risk" related to omicron "remains very high." Scientists are still working to learn about the variant's transmissibility, severity and ability to evade vaccines and immune response, and top officials have cautioned that it's too early to...
There are now 23 Democrats who won't seek reelection in the 2022 midterms as Representative Albio Sires from New Jersey plans to retire and party leadership desperately grips their slim majority in the House. 'When he retires at the end of his term, our Caucus and the Congress will truly miss his tireless voice For The People,' House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement Tuesday. Sires, the Washington Post notes, is planning to officially announce his retirement after his eighth term in early 2022 and will endorse as his replacement Robert Menendez, Jr., the son of New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez. The news comes after Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard became the 22nd House Democrat to announce she won't run for reelection in next year's midterms. 'Serving my constituents in Congress has been the single most distinguished honor of my life,' she wrote on Twitter Monday. 'Over my many years of public service, I have always strived to do that which is best to help improve my community and my country.' 'After thirty years in the House of Representatives, the time...
Esteban Ocon has achieved victory in a unique and unrepeatable Hungarian Grand Prix, which began with rain and a lot of rain and ended with a spike comeback from Lewis Hamilton, from 14 to 2, which gives him the leadership in the World Championship. Sebastian Vettel was second and Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso had to settle for fourth and fifth, respectively, after a great race for both in which they fought to the end for their trophy. (Hours later Vettel was disqualified and Sainz added a podium and Alonso finished fourth) The man of the day was undoubtedly the Asturian, who defended Hamilton’s attack for 11 laps so that he could not finish his climb to the first, thus saving the victory of the other Alpine. Fernando celebrated his 40th birthday as one of the best in the world and in fullness. The battle was monumental, with a master of how to defend a square without a single illegality, giving away a show that hardly anyone is capable of offering against a car and a driver like the...
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – Every month during the school year, CBS4 and PDC Energy honor a high school student who excels in science, technology, engineering or math, STEM. The Future Leaders winner gets $1,000 and a profile on a CBS4 newscast. (credit CBS) This month’s winner is Sophie Reynolds. She’s a rising senior at Castle View High School and she’s already become a leader in the recruitment of more girls into biotech. “I hope that I can inspire more females in the STEM field, specifically biotech,” Reynolds said. Reynolds is achieving that goal through a website she built called Exploring Biotech. “I never built a website before, but I had a lot of fun with it,” she explained. Reynolds built the website as part of her Gold Award, the Girl Scouts highest achievement and a community service project. “I was nervous, at first, to try because I didn’t know what I was going to do or if I could even complete my Gold Award, but I’m very glad I did it,” she said. (CNN)Several days since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said fully vaccinated Americans can -- for the most part -- ditch their masks, more places are announcing changes to their mask policies, or doing away with the requirement altogether. CVS pharmacy and Target both said on Monday they will no longer require fully vaccinated guests to wear masks inside their stores unless mandated by local leaders, joining other businesses who have dropped mask mandates for those who have gotten their shots. "Face coverings will continue to be strongly recommended for guests and team members who are not fully vaccinated," Target said in a statement. Unvaccinated CVS customers are asked to continue masking up. Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced fully vaccinated people will no longer be required to wear masks in many locations, with exceptions for schools, healthcare facilities and transportation hubs. New York wont require masks or social distancing for fully vaccinated people starting Wednesday"And if you're not vaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated, we need you to continue to protect yourselves," Bowser said Monday. KEIR Starmer's leadership of Labour is in chaos today after a botched reshuffle left his authority in tatters and his top team at war. An extraordinary briefing war broke out between him and his deputy Angela Rayner after his attempt to fire her spectacularly backfired. 3Sir Keir Starmer's leadership of Labour is in crisisCredit: LNP After 24 hours of total chaos Sir Keir was forced to back down from plans for a total overhaul and make largely cosmetic changes to his shadow cabinet. The episode, coming on the back of some disastrous results in last Thursday's elections, has left his leadership holed below the waterline. And today Manchester's mayor Andy Burnham had to issue an extraordinary plea for different factions within Labour to stop the public mudslinging. Asked about the botched reshuffle, he said: "I didn't like the way that was handled, I'll be honest. "I don't think the way Angela was treated was right. But it's been resolved and we move on from this morning. There's a shadow cabinet in place now. "Labour needs to move on from the...
The national Democrats' biggest achievement to date is passing a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package that only directs 9 percent of its funding to COVID-19 relief. The very first bill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduced in this Congress, after months of a health crisis, lost jobs, lockdowns, and fear, was legislation aimed at federalizing elections, bailing out Democratic allies, and ensuring Democrats remain in power, regardless of what Americans want. There’s a reason Pelosi and the White House are putting all their momentum behind an agenda that most Americans oppose: They know this is the only chance they will get. Pelosi knows her party can’t keep the U.S. House of Representatives in Democratic Party hands through the 2022 elections. KAYLEIGH MCENANY TELLS 'HANNITY' PELOSI 'FLOUTING THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE' WITH FOR THE PEOPLE ACT So, until January 2023, she’s going to use every moment to pay off political friends, pass as many radical left-wing bills as possible, and do everything in her power to erase everything President Donald Trump accomplished – regardless of how it helped Americans.  VideoThis is...

Jason Brown, who also goes by Abdu Ja’Me and Matthew Dobbs, was first charged in 2019 with trying three different times to provide $500 to ISIS. A superseding indictment filed in U.S. District Court accuses Brown of illegally possessing four loaded handguns in the interest of drug trafficking that included distributing methamphetamine. READ MORE: Northwestern (Virtual) Dance Marathon Starts Thursday Night Brown is also charged with distributing fentanyl, and conspiring to possess marijuana plants illegally with the intent to distribute. In his initial charges, Brown is alleged to have given money to a confidential source, believing it would be sent to an ISIS soldier in combat in Syria, but who was actually an undercover law enforcement officer. President Joe Biden has pledged to try and unify the country after a divisive four years under former President Donald Trump, but his actions thus far could create the same sentiment that led to Trump upending the political establishment and becoming president.
(CNN)"When you have to make a choice and don't make it, that is in itself a choice," William James, one of the most prominent American philosophers of the 19th Century, once said.James' words rang through my head over the last 24 hours as it became more and more clear that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, wasn't actually going to make a decision about whether Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's past extremist and intolerant comments should result in the Georgia congresswoman being stripped of her committee assignments. After a lengthy meeting with Greene on Tuesday night in which she refused to apologize for her past actions, a person with knowledge of the matter told CNN, McCarthy foisted the matter onto the Republican Steering Committee. But the Steering Committee adjourned Tuesday night without rendering a decision on Greene. So McCarthy turned to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, for help. But a meeting between the two men earlier Wednesday produced no resolution to the problem. "I spoke to Leader McCarthy this morning, and it is clear there is no...

Cult leader Keith Raniere before he was taken into custody. He is awaiting sentencing on sex trafficking charges among other crimes NXIVM cult leader Keith Raniere's lawyers have claimed in court papers that he didn't need to enslave women to have sex because 'many' were already interested in him.  Raniere is awaiting sentencing on charges including sex trafficking of children, conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit forced labor. He ran the NXIVM sex cult, enticing a collection of women including some famous actresses and heiresses, who he branded and manipulated.  He maintains his innocence and said in his court records last week that he stood by everything he has ever done which he thinks includes helping people achieve 'happiness'. Among the other comments from his lawyers in their 86-page memorandum is that he did not need to recruit women for sex or to manipulate them because he attracted so many other women on his own.  'Raniere had been in intimate relationships with six of the eight first-line DOS members, many of them for many years.  RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1...
Daniel Jones stood out. He was impossible to miss. There he was, his “no contact” jersey looking like a red dot at the center of a mass of blue and white, breaking down the team huddle before Friday night’s team scrimmage at gray and empty MetLife Stadium. Sometimes quarterbacks do this, but usually they do not. And they almost never did it around the Giants when Eli Manning was in the drivers’ seat. Manning preferred to stand on the fringe of the amped huddle, looking very ready to get to the sideline and concentrate on the task at hand. Jones is going to be different. He already is. “It was just an opportunity to get the guys together,’’ Jones said, breaking into a little laugh. “Getting everybody fired up and ready to go. It was the first opportunity to be here in the stadium. We had uniforms on and the simulation of a game, so I think guys were excited and just wanted to kind of continue that excitement and add to it if I could.’’ This was a strange...

The Cincinnati Bengals have yet to sign No. 1 pick Joe Burrow but that hasn’t stopped the LSU Heisman-winning quarterback from working out with his new teammates. Nervous Bengals fans should take solace in the fact that Burrow isn’t planning a holdout or refusing to sign. In fact, he’s spent his time getting comfortable with his new teammates. Burrow was spotted working out with a few of his new Cincinnati coworkers, including second-year tight end Drew Sample, former New Orleans Saints safety Vonn Bell and defensive end Sam Hubbard, whom Burrow played with during his days as a backup at Ohio State.
