The number at the time of writing is less than 200,000, still well below a revised goal of 280,000 by the end of 2022.  The documents also reveal that the majority of those 200,000 users, don't come back after entering the system once with many complaining most of the areas are bereft of other users.  They've also complained of avatars floating around eerily with no legs - an issue Meta says it'll fix in the coming months.   Since the Spring of 2022, the number of users of Horizon Worlds has been declining.  Less than ten percent of the worlds in the Metaverse receive more than 50 visitors and the majority of these worlds receive zero visitors.  A new report from the Wall...

Disney is plotting a metaverse that would let people experience the most magical place on earth without ever setting foot in the theme park. CEO Bob Chapek said the media giant's metaverse would exist on its streaming platform, Disney+, and allow people to experience park rides in virtual reality. 'We call it next-gen storytelling' Chapek said in an interview with Deadline, noting that he preferred not to use the phrase metaverse 'because it has a lot of hair on it.' Chapek also hinted he was considering merging Hulu - which Disney bought a one-third share of in 2019 - with Disney+ to bring more mature content to the platform, but noted that wasn't likely unless Hulu was fully owned. 'We want Disney to be a grand unifier,' he said.  With Disney preparing for its 100-year anniversary, Chapek characterized the metaverse plans as the brand's way into the future. 'We do appreciate the past, but we also know that we don't want to become dinosaurs,' he said. 'Disney+ will not just be a movie service platform, but it's going to become an...

Lowe's Metaverse Open Builder.Courtesy: Lowe's It seems like every company is getting into the metaverse these days. Lowe's doesn't want to miss out on the opportunity to use it to help builders imagine projects.  But unlike other retailers that chose a particular virtual platform or game like Fortnite or Roblox, Lowe's metaverse assets – including free downloads of 500 product assets, including items such as chairs – are available on its own hub. "It's all emerging, and it's all up for exploration," Lowe's executive vice president and chief brand and marketing officer Marisa Thalberg told CNBC in an exclusive interview. The retailer decided not to choose one metaverse platform but rather "a kind of an agnostic and kind of democratized approach," she said. While other brands have found immediate ways to make money in the metaverse, even on an experimental basis, Thalberg said "this isn't about immediately jumping in and trying to make an event or immediately commoditizing it." Rather, she told CNBC, "our goal really is to take this new frontier and help people use their imaginations and help...
(CNN)It seems that every few days, a new star announces their foray into the world of non-fungible tokens, cryptocurrency or some other inscrutable corner of the metaverse -- the general term for a nascent virtual space where people can play, meet, and of course, buy things. This has been a habit for a while now, and every starry-eyed announcement usually promises some form of connection or exclusive opportunity. But for the majority of the population who don't own cryptocurrency or NFTs (and may not care to), big names and the pricey tech concepts they promote make for strange bedfellows indeed. Take some recent examples: Last week, Madonna minted an extremely NSFW NFT collection that featured explicit images of her giving birth to a tree, as well as a 3D model of her undercarriage. Charitably, the reactions were mixed. crypto-termscryptocurrency: a currency that exists virtually and requires complex technology to verify and use NFT: (non-fungible token) a proof of digital ownership of something, typically a piece of art or other media metaverse: a virtual online space, in which cryptocurrency and NFTs...

She was repeatedly asked to have virtual sex, with one man attempting to ram a bottle in her avatar’s mouth, and another boasting: “I like little girls from the age of 9 to 12 - it’s just my thing.” Horrific racial abuse and vile bullying were rife in almost every room she visited and, shockingly, no steps were taken to verify her age...

The Epic Games logo displayed on a smartphone.Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images Fortnite creator Epic Games has raised $2 billion in funding from Sony and the Lego family, in a massive deal highlighting the excitement from big businesses about the so-called "metaverse." Sony will inject $1 billion in the company, Epic announced Monday, while KIRKBI, the family-owned investment company behind Lego, will invest an equal amount. The deal, which is subject to customary closing conditions, would value Epic at $31.5 billion. The news arrives hot on the heels of a partnership announced by Epic and Lego last week, aimed at co-developing a "family-friendly" metaverse for kids. Lego already has a successful line of video games based on lucrative franchises, including Disney's Star Wars and Warner Bros' Batman. "A proportion of our investments is focused on trends we believe will impact the future world that we and our children will live in," Soren Thorup Sorensen, CEO of KIRKBI, said in a statement Monday. A NEW form of online dating is letting VR users connect in the metaverse – one married man has shared his experience. In a new article for Vice, Ross Buchanan writes that he was on a mission to see what dating in the metaverse is like. 1 Planet Theta is a new VR dating platform due to launch soon. “Recently, I took a trip into the metaverse to find out if it’s possible to have a fun night out and it was… distinctly average,” Buchanan said. “Now, I’d like to find out if the metaverse holds the key to the future of dating and, dare I say it, love in the 21st century,” he added. APPLE is reportedly developing virtual reality contact lenses that could one day replace iPhones, according to experts. The VR-infused eyewear would let people live in the metaverse, according to a report from Apple leak site, Macrumors. 2Experts believe that Apple is working on VR contact lenses The high-tech 'contact lenses' would integrate virtual reality into someone's daily life likely using an internally-developed Apple software called 'realityOS'. The 'Apple Lens,' as it has been called, is expected to work in tangent with the iPhone and Apple Glass to allow users to make calls, browse the web and even play games while engaged with the world around them. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted last year that Apple might release its virtual reality 'contacts' sometime in the 2030s. Kuo added that the lenses will take technology products from an era of "visible computing" to "invisible computing." While the lenses will likely rely on another device (i.e. an iPhone) or a 5G network to function, they could potentially eliminate the need for smartphone devices in the future. The smart contact...
In this article MC-FRFrench luxury group LVMH Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bernard ArnaultEric Piermont | AFP | Getty ImagesLVMH Chief Executive Bernard Arnault said Thursday that the metaverse could become a business opportunity for the luxury giant, but "we have to be wary of bubbles" and "we have to sound a note of caution." As the luxury industry takes center stage in the growth hopes of the metaverse — with a virtual Gucci bag selling for $4,500 on Roblox — brands like Nike, Balenciaga and Burberry are making plans to turn their real-world status into digital profits. Nike recently acquired digital-sneaker brand RTFKT, which sold 600 pairs of virtual shoes for $3.1 million, while Burberry collaborated with Mythical Games to launch nonfungible tokens. For now, LVMH is focused on the real rather than the virtual, Arnault said, during the company's earnings call Thursday. "At this stage, we are very much in the real world, selling real products," he said. "We are not interested in selling virtual sneakers for 10 euros. We're not into that." Arnault also warned of...

Facebook researchers are said to have had extensive knowledge that coronavirus and misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine existed on the company's apps, yet did little to combat it let alone share the information with the White House. Documents presented by Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen show how multiple studies were run producing a number various number detailing the types of users who were most likely to share fake news. Lawmakers, academics and the White House urged Facebook to share such information publicly.      Facebook employees also knew misinformation about the coronavirus was dominating parts of the social media platform creating 'echo-chamber-like effects' ultimately reinforcing hesitancy over the vaccine.  Researchers at Facebook were well aware that misinformation about coronavirus was spreading across its platform but did little to prevent it White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday that it is 'unfortunately not surprising' for the administration to learn that Facebook knew of its problems with vaccine misinformation The trove of documents shows that in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Facebook carefully investigated how its platforms spread misinformation about life-saving vaccines. Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, announced a new high-end virtual and augmented reality headset codenamed 'Project Cambria' on Thursday. CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke very briefly about the device during the live-streamed virtual and augmented reality Connect 2021 keynote conference that focused on the metaverse and revealed the new name of the social media platform. However, Zuckerberg discussed several Project Cambria features including sensors that enable a user's avatar to make natural eye contact and facial expressions in real time while in the metaverse. The headset will also allow for mixed reality - the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments – using cameras that pass high-resolution full-color video to the headset's screens. Zuckerberg said Project Cambria is 'not the next Quest,' although it will be compatible with the device, but will be its own product and cost more than the current headsets. Facebook will now go by the name Meta, the company announced Thursday by pulling down a curtain draped over its iconic 'Like' sign outside its Silicon Valley headquarters Thursday.  Meta refers to the 'metaverse,' which is the company's new venture into shared augmented reality and virtual world environments for working and playing that people can access via the internet.  It comes as the company is ensnared in controversy relating to whistleblower Frances Haugen's leaked documents and bombshell claims that the company 'puts profits over people.' The firm's original, flagship social media site and app - Facebook - will keep its moniker, but Facebook Inc., the parent company that also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, will now go under the new title.  The announcement, which came at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference, includes a new logo depicting a blue infinity symbol and refers to the 'metaverse', the company's new focus to expand beyond its social media apps.    The term 'metaverse' can refer to digital spaces, which are made more lifelike by the use of virtual reality or augmented reality. Epic Games / Devolver Digital One of the most popular games of 2020, Fall Guys, is now under the Epic Games umbrella as part of a new acquisition by the Fortnite developer. Like Fortnite, Fall Guys was introduced as a new spin on the typical battle royale formula and it has been able to sustain a sizable audience after reaching meteoric heights. You might remember than in February, news leaked of a potential Fall Guys and Fortnite crossover, and now that looks like it’s much more of a possibility with this new partnership. Nothing will change about Fall Guys and you’ll be able to continue playing it as normal. It’ll actually be getting a few upgrades with this announcement as the developers revealed they would be working on bringing cross-play, account systems and squad vs. squad modes to the game. However, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s comment about the metaverse could be the most interesting thing to pay attention to. It’s not a surprise that Fortnite has been becoming a haven for much more than just fans of...
