MOST British fans are unlikely to  recognise Brugge’s manager during Wednesday night's Champions League clash at Atletico Madrid. But 6ft 1in Carl Hoefkens will be a familiar figure to supporters of Stoke and West Brom. 3Ex-defender Carl Hoefkens was a fans' favourite for Stoke City in the Championship from 2005-2007Credit: Getty Images - Getty 3Hoefkens became Brugge boss in May and despite a mixed start domestically his side are shining in the Champions LeagueCredit: AFP The former right-back, 44, became a Potters cult hero in his two-season spell — thanks in no small part to his flowing black hair and trademark headband. He was voted fans’ player of the year for 2005-06 in his first campaign with the club before being part of the Baggies  promotion winning squad in 2007-08. But 13 years — and at least one harsh haircut — later Hoefkens is masterminding Club Brugge’s perfect start to Champions League Group B, which they top with three wins from three. The Belgian champions lost boss Philippe Clement to Monaco in January and installed Alfred Schreuder. But the Dutchman...

The dress code was baggy shorts and T-shirts when the rich and famous jetted over to the Caribbean two weeks ago for Crypto Bahamas. The four-day conference in a luxury resort for leading creators and investors in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies featured talks by spotty computer nerds and such well-known financial luminaries as Tony Blair and Gisele Bundchen. Actor Orlando Bloom and his pop singer wife Katy Perry were among other celebrities who flew in for a private dinner with fellow investors. In between sessions with titles such as ‘Winning’ and ‘How Crypto Empowers Global Citizens’, attendees could attend ‘Sunrise Yoga’ and a ‘VIP pool party’. The mood was self-congratulatory, but how could it not be, given that everyone involved in ‘crypto’ — the controversial digital currencies that exist only online — have spent the past few years being reassured that they are the prophets of the future. Financial analysts predict a ‘crypto winter’ for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency rivals such as Ethereum and Solana. Some believe the horrendous slump in the cryptocurrency market could be the one that ends...
Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale on March 2, amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The 55-year-old was then sanctioned by the UK Government last week, after Downing Street claimed to have proved his links to Vladimir Putin. Russian-Israeli billionaire Abramovich has always denied those links but had already moved to sell Chelsea amid the major geopolitical shift. Following the sanctions imposed, numerous potential suitors had until Friday to submit a bid to buy the Blues. Of those candidates two were Todd Boehly and Tom Ricketts?  But who are they? Sportsmail gets a view Stateside of the pair.   Todd Boehly does not run the Dodgers. For the matter, he also does not run the Lakers, another team in which he holds a minority ownership stake. His company, Eldridge, holds dozens of investments in firms ranging from sports and entertainment to gaming, technology and insurance. The controlling owner of the Dodgers is Mark Walter, not Boehly. However, when Walter's ownership group bought the Dodgers, Boehly negotiated the record-setting television rights deal that provided the team with more than enough money to...
Adele is today at the centre of an extraordinary row between transgender rights activists and feminists after she took a stand against the ultra-woke 'genderless' Brit Awards by declaring: ‘I love being a woman’. Her speech while collecting Artist of the Year at the 02 Arena in London sparked uproarious cheers from the audience and viewers at home took to social media to say: 'Thank GOD she has said it'. The Brits axed separate male and female prizes for best solo and best international acts in 2022 to avoid upsetting several artists, including former Brit winner Sam Smith, who identifies as non-binary.  Collecting the award Adele said: 'I understand why the name of this award has changed. But I really love being a woman and being a female artist I do I’m really proud of us'. And some Adele fans have already said she offended non-binary people and branded her a TERF – a derogatory term for a feminist who excludes the rights of transgender women also thrown at the singer’s friend JK Rowling.  One viewer tweeted: 'Please, no, ADELE can't be a...

One evening in March 1960, a plane touched down at Prestwick airport in Scotland, then a U.S. military base, to refuel on its way back from Germany to America.  A handsome sergeant, in an immaculately pressed uniform, emerged out of the plane. It was none other than Elvis Presley, then the world's biggest music star, on his way home after military service. As soon as he stepped on to the Tarmac, he was surrounded by 200 adoring British fans who had flocked there after news leaked of his imminent stop-over. It was The King's first visit to Britain and, although he promised 'I'll be back!', it turned out to be his last. Todd Slaughter with Elvis before he performed his final concert 6 weeks before he died For, despite his huge popularity in Britain, and strenuous efforts to get him to perform here, Elvis never returned. MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) — Saturday night’s near purr-fect catch at Hard Rock Stadium wasn’t even a football, it was a cat, but what happened to the feisty feline after falling from the upper deck into an American flag held by Canes fans? According to a Miami-Dade Animal Services spokesperson, the cat ran off after bouncing off the flag, hitting the ground and then being held up like Simba. READ MORE: Tracking The Tropics: Tropical Storm Nicholas, Two Waves To Watch In video taken by multiple fans who witnessed the kitty’s free fall, the cat had some sort of collar or harness on it, leading Miami-Dade Animal Services to believe the cat actually belongs to someone, but no one has come forward to report a missing cat or claim ownership of the #HardRockCat, as it’s trending on social media. The incident started in the first quarter of the  University of Miami- Appalachian State football game on Saturday, September 11, when the cat got one of its paws stuck on the façade of the upper deck. As football fans watched in disbelief,...
ARSENAL are the Premier League's biggest spenders this summer following back-to-back eighth-placed finishes. With the Gunners without European football for the first time since the 1995-96 season, Mikel Arteta has made it his mission to bolster his side. 2 Left-back Nuno Tavares was the North Londoners' first arrival after he joined from Benfica for £8million. Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga was then signed from Anderlecht for £17m, before Arsenal splashed out £50m to bring in Ben White from Brighton. Arsenal announced the £30m transfer of Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid on Friday morning, with Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale poised to join for £24m. And according to Sky Sports, Arsenal have forked out £129m on the five players - £15m more than Manchester United. Manchester City [£100m] and Chelsea [£97.5m] complete the top four, though they have spent money on just one player each. YOU know how they say the record books never lie…well this year’s could end up telling an absolute whopper. Arsenal, for all their woes, are three good performances from winning the Europa League. 2Mikel Arteta watches on as Arsenal are beaten by EvertonCredit: Getty Three games from winning two trophies in little more than a year under Mikel Arteta. Three games from suggesting the Spaniard is the answer to their post-Arsene Wenger managerial prayers, rather than Brian Kidd with a sunlamp. Two semi-finals – and they really SHOULD beat Villarreal – and a final from people looking back in years to come and thinking ‘that was actually a pretty good Gunners side after all.’ Which is where that whopper comes in. For in truth they are anything but. They are what they are…a mid-table team on a par with the likes of Leeds, Villa and Wolves. The team which, for nearly two decades, had a reserved sign on a seat at football’s top table won’t be slugging it out with Europe’s giants again any time soon. Yes, they...
Baseball fans that have eagerly waited to catch a Washington Nationals home game will likely have to wait a little longer. The D.C. government has approved the Nationals to play home games in their park this season, but there will be no fans in the stands because of the on going pandemic. In a letter to a team official, the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency and D.C. Health approved an application for the team to play at home, with a condition that fans would not be in attendance. They cited the impacts of COVID-19 as the cause. The letter was addressed to Senior Vice President of Community Engagement for the Washington Nationals Gregory McCarthy. The agencies said in the letter that they will reexamine fan attendance as coronavirus metrics change in the District. They said they are evaluating new strains of the virus that are more transmissible and how those strains may affect public health measures, including vaccinations. But there is some hope for fans that want to attend games. The agencies plan to revisit ticket sales, and...
From saucy school uniform to midriff-baring outfits, Britney Spears is used to sending her fans into a frenzy.  But yesterday the pop star showed fans the 'real her', sharing images of herself in a check shirt, rolled-up jeans, sandals and glasses as she attempted to change a light bulb.  However, it was her cryptic comments that attracted most interest. She wrote: 'I wanted to show you what I really look like... sometimes it's nice to not try so hard and pull down your walls! It takes a lot of strength'.  Her post fuelled the #FreeBritney campaign by fans who believe the singer, 38, was forced into a conservatorship that put her father in control of her affairs in 2008 after she started behaving erratically.  SIAN BOYLE reports on the legal battle that is tearing the Spears family apart.  The pop star recently showed fans the 'real her', sharing images of herself in a check shirt, rolled-up jeans, sandals and glasses as she attempted to change a light bulb High summer in downtown Los Angeles and, in the blistering...
A fan of the New England Patriots. (Photo by Adam Glanzman/Getty Images) Patriots fans are now big fans of Cam Newton now that he’s on their team.A lot can change in a matter of weeks or months, and not just in the real world, where every day is an adventure, but in sports too. Just two months ago, it looked like the New England Patriots had as much interest in Cam Newton as I had spending the day outside in the July heat and returning to my home with the air conditioning off. But two months later, Newton has signed a team-friendly deal with the Patriots where he’ll replace the departed Tom Brady. Two months ago, many Patriots fans were vocal about their disdain for the former No. 1 overall pick and 2015 MVP who led the Panthers to the Super Bowl that year after a 15-1 regular season. Well, those fans who didn’t want Newton then are suddenly his biggest fan. This tweet from Dov Kleinman on April 27 that says the Patriots have shown zero interest in Newton...
CHICAGO (CBS) — You’ll be able to watch professional baseball in person in the Chicago area this summer, starting July 7. The Chicago Dogs of the Independent American Association will be playing in front of up to 1,260 fans per game in Rosemont. That is 20 percent capacity, and in accordance with the Phase 4 guidelines for reopening set by Gov. JB Pritzker in Illinois. “We’ve been given a gift, and we’re quite excited. The players, our staff, our fans – the reaction’s just great,” said Chicago Dogs owner Shawn Hunter. Hunter emphasized that the team is doing everything possible to ensure fans’ safety. “We’ll have seats that are spread out evenly throughout the stadium at 20 percent capacity,” he said. Seats will be sectioned off so families of up to 10 can be seated together. “In terms of fans coming in, you know, we’re looking at temperature checks at the front gate, much like you see if you travel on an airplane or an office visit, or other public spaces,” Hunter said. There will also be efforts for social...
