SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — Civil rights activists are calling on the San Jose Police Department to take a hard look in the mirror after a promising rookie officer’s death in March was ruled a fentanyl overdose. “With this loss of life, the San Jose PD needs to look inside and find out if there’s a problem inside the police department,” said civil rights activist and police watchdog Rev. Jeff Moore. READ MORE: Report: Draft Opinion Suggests High Court Could Overturn RoeThe Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed Saturday that Officer De’Jon Packer, whose body was discovered inside his Milpitas home in March, died as a result of “fentanyl toxicity.” The news sent a jolt through the San Jose police department, which bid farewell to the well-liked 24-year-old at an emotional memorial service last month. “The full details regarding Officer Packer’s death are still not known and are being investigated by the Milpitas Police Department and they have our full cooperation,” said San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata in a news release. “This behavior is not something we condone,...
The Los Angeles Lakers will need to find a way to win with Anthony Davis on the sideline because his injury update doesn’t seem promising.  Well, the Los Angeles Lakers might not have much fun throughout the rest of the regular season. Unfortunately for folks in Los Angeles, there’s a very good chance that things will actually be very miserable for Lakers fans. That’s because Anthony Davis could be out for the next month. If you’re looking at the rest of the NBA schedule, you know that timing doesn’t work well for the Lakers. Towards the end of a report that was intended to address the future of the Lakers and LeBron James, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski very casually mentioned that sources have informed the folks over at ESPN that Davis could be out for another four to five weeks. According to Wojnarowski, Davis is dealing with a right mid-foot sprain that will sideline him for essentially the remainder of the regular season. That’s not good news for Davis, James, the Lakers, or their fans.Anthony Davis injury update: Los Angeles Lakers may not...
Rockets rookie Jalen Green threw down over Jason Tatum of the Celtics with a highlight jam that threatened to take down the rim. Houston drafted Jalen Green with the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft with hopes of him lighting up the Toyota Center. He did just that on Sunday night with a monster jam to give Rockets fans something to cheer about. OH MY JALEN GREEN. pic.twitter.com/tSMmRm8u64 — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) October 25, 2021 Fans in Houston can look forward to many more Green slams as his career unfolds.Jalen Green had a break out night for the Rockets against the CelticsFor now, the key is patience. On Sunday, that highlight didn’t change the result: a 107-97 loss dropping Houston to 1-2. Still, it was the most promising performance from Green on an individual level yet. He dropped 30 points while going 8-of-10 from beyond the arc. That’s a franchise rookie record for triples in a game. He also had four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Green had been relatively quiet in his first...
IT was the sort of thing you would expect to see in the streets of Middlesbrough, or of course any English town, outside a kebab shop on a Friday night. Tyrone Mings stood his ground and as another bloke approached - in this case Sasa Kalajdzic - a brutal forearm smash was unleashed. 5Tyrone Mings could start ahead of Harry Maguire in England's Euro 2020 opener against CroatiaCredit: AFP 5Aston Villa ace Mings started in the Three Lions' 1-0 friendly win against AustriaCredit: Ryan Browne-The Guardian So the fact Mings delivered this unprovoked attack during an international is not only staggering but, as England prepare for the start of Euro 2020 without Harry Maguire, extremely worrying. Had this been against Croatia on June 13, with less then 10 minutes gone, England would have been reduced to 10 men. Croatia would have had a penalty. With a one-man advantage for virtually the entire game, they would have won. Mings was lucky his jab on the Austrian striker, who unsurprisingly collapsed onto the ground, was missed by Belgian referee Lawrence Visser and...
Now that was a preseason befitting the No. 3 pick of the 2019 draft. Everything RJ Barrett worked on during his long pandemic offseason has paid off, especially with a graceful performance from the free-throw line, where he hit 86.7 percent of his tries in four preseason games. It’s a dramatic rise from last season’s bleak 61.4 percent. “I just got a lot of reps in,’’ Barrett said Sunday on a Zoom call. “It’s definitely something that bothered me from last season. I got a lot of reps. I haven’t done anything yet. I got to continue to be consistent.” Inefficiency was Barrett’s blemish as a highly touted rookie, and it cost him a spot on the league’s two all-rookie teams. Now he’s on fire. Though Barrett still is struggling from the 3-point line, he was smooth on mid-range jumpers (3 of 5) and a terror in using his strong body to get to the basket and finishing. Barrett was 17 of 24 (70 percent) around the rim. Last season his by-the-rim percentage was in the low 50’s. “He gets...
AstraZeneca, along with the University of Oxford, is the third major drugmaker in as many weeks to announce results showing high effectiveness for a vaccine candidate, buoying optimism that an end to the pandemic is near. “I think these are really exciting results,” said Dr. Andrew Pollard, chief investigator for the Phase 3 AstraZeneca trial. The vaccine candidate was 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 in one of the dosing regimens tested; it was 62% effective in another. The vaccine is also more easily stored than those from Pfizer and Moderna, which must be stored at below-freezing temperatures that will likely be difficult to maintain in the distribution process. AstraZeneca’s vaccine candidate, meanwhile, must be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. “Because the vaccine can be stored at fridge temperatures, it can be distributed around the world using the normal immunization distribution system,” Pollard said. “Our goal … to make sure that we have a vaccine that was accessible everywhere, I think we’ve actually managed to do that.” The AstraZeneca announcement comes just three days after...
