The House of Representatives just took a much-needed first step in preparing for the next pandemic. The Energy and Commerce Committee announced that the Build Back Better Act will include $15 billion for pandemic preparedness. This modest investment -- less than .5% of the Build Back Better package -- will massively pay off in helping us avoid another calamity like COVID-19. $15 billion isn't enough, but it is an important starting point. We must come to terms with the grim certainty that another pandemic will devastate our country in our lifetimes. Our government cannot afford another scramble for vaccine technology and personal protective equipment. We must prepare for the next pandemic today. Should Congress fail to pass at least $15 billion of pandemic preparedness funding, Americans will suffer more the next time we face a pandemic. COVID-19 has killed over 600,000 Americans and cost this country $16 trillion dollars, and experts say that the next pandemic could be right around the corner. That's not to mention that COVID-19 has had disproportionate, devastating effects on disabled Americans, communities of color,...

A small asteroid crashed into Earth three years ago — and now scientists know where it came from. Researchers have traced the origins of the resulting rare meteorite fragments, which began the journey to Earth some 23 million years ago.  The asteroid, called 2018 LA, shot across the sky like a fireball before landing in Botswana on June 2, 2018. Researchers subsequently recovered 23 meteorites from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a huge area known for its diverse wildlife. "The meteorite is named 'Motopi Pan' after a local watering hole," Mohutsiwa Gabadirwe, the senior curator of the Botswana Geoscience Institute, said in a statement, referring to the first sample they found. "This meteorite is a national treasure of Botswana." Scientists first spotted the asteroid using the University of Arizona's Catalina Sky Survey, which tracks asteroids as part of NASA's Planetary Defense program. It marked just the second time scientists have been able to study an asteroid in space before it reaches Earth — typically, they don't know about them until after it's happened.  Fragment of asteroid 2018 LA recovered...

Former actress Gina Carano Every year, there’s an anti-Hollywood screed from the right that bemoans the plethora of late-night comics, movies, and television series that have a “liberal” slant. Usually, this just means having diverse casts, positive anti-hate messages, or a low tolerance for actors who are openly bigoted. This year is no different. The new phrase the right wing has latched onto this year is “cancel culture.” In other words, if you call someone out for their open-hatred of other people, they claim you are really attacking them for being Republican. Conservatives trying to create an alternate Hollywood isn’t anything new, as attempts come every so often. After speaking at the 2016 RNC, a divorce, and a failed run for Congress, Antonio Sabato, Jr. claims he was forced to move to Florida to work construction. The ‘90s soap star and former underwear model announced plans to establish a right-wing studio after he was allegedly “blacklisted.” He’s not alone. Despite having extensive family connections in Hollywood, Ben Shapiro is a failed screenwriter. In a January announcement dripping in...
Two of the league’s most efficient point guards have not always seen eye-to-eye. In fact, they have also had interesting duels from the time Chris Paul joined the LA Clippers back in 2011 and throughout his time with the Houston Rockets as well. As Paul’s Phoenix Suns were getting prepared to face Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors, he spoke highly of someone everybody thought was his rival. Steph Curry and Chris Paul’s off-court friendship Even before Curry entered the league, Paul knew the kind of person he is. And despite whatever went on between the two on the court, off the court, he always had respect for the Warriors‘ superstar. In a pregame interview, Paul said, “What’s crazy is we don’t think of ourselves as old, and Steph is a grown man in his own right.” He went on and revealed the relationship the two have outside the NBA. “But I do a point guard, an elite camp, every summer. Steph came to camp, right. So a lot of people don’t know before Steph’s rookie year he came...
For her distraught boyfriend it was a moment of agony, followed by utter disbelief — and then joy. Lance O’Brien was midway through a TV interview about the sudden death of his longtime girlfriend, former Charlie’s Angel and Bond Girl Tanya Roberts, when he broke off to take an urgent call.  It was from the Los Angeles hospital where only a day earlier he said he had taken the actress in his arms for the last time. ‘As I held her in her last moments, she opened her eyes,’ he had recounted earlier. ‘Tanya had the most beautiful eyes.’ And then she slipped away, he added tearfully. Only she hadn’t — as that extraordinary telephone exchange revealed when it was broadcast on Monday by the CBS show Inside Edition, which had been interviewing Mr O’Brien at the time via Zoom.
(CNN)President Donald Trump has long promised to release a health care plan that could replace Obamacare, but with just two months to go until the election, he has yet to do so, with his latest self-imposed deadline passing without a plan.In an August 3 press briefing, Trump said his health care plan would most likely be released before the end of the month. But August came and went and the President never released a plan. It marks the latest instance of Trump promising an Obamacare solution that never came."I do want to say that we're going to be introducing a tremendous health care plan sometime prior -- hopefully, prior to the end of the month. It's just completed now," Trump said at the time. "We'll be doing, sometime during this month, the health care plan. And I think that'll be before the end of the month. And I think it'll be very impressive to a lot of people."In an interview with Fox News in July, Trump said he would be signing a "full and complete health care plan" within two...
