While a diagnosis of dementia can be devastating to an individual, the overwhelming loss, responsibility and decisions involved in a person’s care can be equally devastating to their caregiver.  A $1.1 million grant from the National Institute on Aging will help researchers at HealthPartners Institute’s Neuroscience Research Center continue to assess the effectiveness of a promising model for dementia care: Care Ecosystem.   The model, developed at the University of California-San Francisco, is a telephone- and web-based approach that uses care team navigators to help patients with dementia and their caregivers take charge of their care and connect with community resources like caregiver support groups, food delivery services and financial assistance programs.  HealthPartners has been running a Care Ecosystem program, with support from a Merck Foundation grant, since 2018, explained Michael Rosenbloom MD, director of HealthPartners Center for Memory and Aging. The new grant will fund further research into the approach’s effectiveness. Vocal USMNT fans have started to make their way to the arena of their team's crucial Group B game with England at the Qatar World Cup. Gregg Berhalter's charges had their final training practice at around 10pm in Al Rayyan Thursday evening as they tried to acclimatize to the conditions they'll face against the Three Lions at 2pm EST today. The pressure has intensified following Iran's 2-0 win over Wales in the group earlier in the day, although the USA can still progress to the knockout stage even if they're defeated by England. Germany's players placed their hands over their mouths during a team photo ahead of their game against Japan in a World Cup Group E match on Wednesday in protest. The action was taken after FIFA threatened sanctions against teams and their captains if they went ahead with their plan to wear the LGBTQ 'OneLove' armband. All German players took part in the gesture in front of dozens of photographers on the pitch in Doha, Qatar - where homosexuality is illegal - ahead of the kickoff. After the protest in the Khalifa Stadium, the German Football Association (DFB) released an statement emphatically supporting its team, saying: 'To ban the armband is like banning our right to speak.' Meanwhile, watching from the stands, Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Fraser wore the banned armband instead. She had disguised it underneath a pink blazer, which she took off as the game began - revealing the band and the heart-shaped logo. It was a day of celebration for Saudi Arabia after they secured a famous victory over Argentina - despite concern for one of their players in stoppage time. As they defended a heroic 2-1 lead, keeper Mohammed Alowais caught team-mate Yasser Al-Shahrani with a sickening flying knee to the head.  It was a thunderous collision and there was immediate concern from keeper Alowais, who frantically urged medics to rush onto the pitch and dropped to his knees as he looked distraught over what had happened. The United States' men's national team have made a huge statement at the World Cup in Qatar by redesigning their crest to incorporate the rainbow flag, in a bid to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. The tournament, which starts on Sunday and sees the US play their opener against Wales on Monday, has been hugely controversial in its build-up, given Qatar's human rights record and attitude to homosexuality. As recently as this month, a Qatar World Cup ambassador told a German TV broadcaster that homosexuality was 'damage to the mind', and it remains illegal to be gay in the conservative Muslim country. The USMNT appear to have made an immediate stand on their arrival in Doha, though, by changing the usual red stripes on their crest to a rainbow. Whenever the Chicago White Sox players left their clubhouse this season to enter the dugout at Guaranteed Rate Field, they were greeted by a sign on the door. “NO PLAYER IS AS GOOD AS THE SUM OF A TEAM.” That message was never more apparent than during the 2022 season, when the sum of the Sox parts did not add up to a winning year on the South Side. We spent most of the last six months wondering when the Sox would come out of hibernation, listening to players and manager Tony La Russa insist they still had a shot at making the postseason in spite of the malaise. Their one hot streak came after La Russa left the team for health reasons, but it proved to be short-lived and an 0-6 homestand against the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers sealed their fate. So a small crowd of a few thousand Sox fans showed up Wednesday on a gorgeous October afternoon to send off one of the most unlovable teams in recent memory. They booed on cue during the Minnesota...
Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett flipped his Porsche several times after leaving the team facility on Monday, but managed to escape with only minor injuries. Neither alcohol nor drugs played a factor in the crash, according to police, and both he and his female passenger were wearing seatbelts. Traffic charges are pending, according to the OSHP.  Weather could have been a contributing factor in the accident because it was raining around the team facility in Berea, Ohio on Monday. Former Dolphin Ryan Fitzpatrick believes Tom Brady was referring to him when he groaned about an unnamed team sticking with their quarterback over him, as he joked that he wanted the derogatory nickname printed on custom t-shirts. In the 2021 offseason, Brady appeared on The Uninterrupted's 'The Shop' podcast when he ranted about a team's lack of interest in acquiring his services, preferring to stick with 'that motherf****r*' at quarterback.  NFL Twitter went on a meltdown soon afterwards, as most fans' first guess was that the now-Buccaneers quarterback was talking about Jimmy Garoppolo, who was at the time starting for the San Francisco 49ers - Brady's hometown. Reality set in for Denzel Mims around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. That’s when all 32 NFL teams had to set their rosters to 53 players and the unhappy wide receiver was still a member of Gang Green. Last week, Mims and his agent Ron Slavin requested a trade because of a lack of opportunities with the starting offensive unit. A day after finding out he was not going to be traded, Mims said he was frustrated with the situation. “It’s really nothing that I can control,” Mims said. “I just need to continue to come out and work hard and do whatever I can do to get on the field. “Of course I’m going to be frustrated that I’m not playing with the starters. I just have to continue to work.” After two less than impressive seasons in the league after being drafted in the second round out of Baylor in 2020, Mims looked like a different player this summer. Although he didn’t receive any opportunities with the first-team offense during training camp or the preseason, Mims impressed coaches and...
Ryan Poles has danced around the word “rebuilding,” calling it a “super sensitive” term. But roster moves are more instructive than words, and the first-year Chicago Bears general manager reinforced one of the organization’s plans with his cuts to form the initial 53-man roster. The Bears are getting younger in a flash. The team that had the second-oldest Week 1 roster in the NFL last year has 13 rookies and seven second-year players after cuts Tuesday to form a roster that surely will see changes in the days to come. Ten of Poles’ 11 draft picks made it through cuts, with the lone exception former Illinois center Doug Kramer, who will spend the year on injured reserve. Three undrafted rookies made it, including Jack Sanborn, the linebacker from Lake Zurich. The Bears have so many rookies on the roster, three first-year Joneses made it: left tackle Braxton, cornerback Jaylon and wide receiver Velus. Yes, they’re unrelated. Of the 20 players in their first or second year, seven are a good bet to start against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept....
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields told reporters after a 21-20 preseason victory over the Cleveland Browns that he “for sure” was thinking about his first trip to FirstEnergy Stadium last season — and how much better Saturday’s outing went. “I was of course thinking about that,” Fields said with a smile. “I am glad 95 (Myles Garrett) wasn’t playing today. But I’m glad we came out with a (win) today for sure.” Fields’ answer provided a good summary of how to feel about the Bears’ third straight preseason victory — satisfaction with a dose of reality. It was a nice, confidence-building win for Fields, who threw three touchdown passes in five drives and wasn’t sacked. But it wasn’t against the full-strength Browns defense, which sat — among others — Garrett, the monster pass rusher who had 4½ of the Browns’ nine sacks in Fields’ first career start in 2021 under previous Bears coach Matt Nagy. With that in mind, here’s our three-phase review of Saturday’s win. Offense Reason for optimism: Entering Saturday, the only points the first-team offense put up...
There are very few things on earth more powerful than nostalgia. On Saturday afternoon at Citi Field, fans were riding the high of watching their favorite players from yesteryear put on a Mets jersey one more time. Everyone from Jay Hook (the first winning pitcher in franchise history) to Daniel Murphy (who was still a major leaguer as recently as 2020) were on hand to celebrate the team’s Amazin’ history. During the pregame introductions, bona fide superstars like Darryl Strawberry and Pedro Martinez drew some of the loudest ovations, but so too did beloved cult figures like Bartolo Colon and Endy Chavez. “We didn’t go out there to evaluate our talent or evaluate who was out there,” Martinez said in the postgame press conference. “I can tell you, there was a huge amount of respect from the youngest to the oldest. To have the opportunity to share my time with some of my heroes from the ‘80s, and be able to share it with some of my ex-teammates from the Mets, it’s a heck of an honor. “I’m extremely proud...

The image of Ian Happ and Willson Contreras embracing in the home dugout at Wrigley Field represented a moment of goodbyes for what appeared to await the Chicago Cubs All-Stars. Both players thought that July 26 day was their last at Wrigley in a Cubs uniform. Yet Contreras and Happ will return with their teammates Friday for the Cubs’ next homestand. Despite the Cubs’ 6-0 loss Tuesday to the St. Louis Cardinals, a lightheartedness lingered. Contreras barely could keep a smile off his face after president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer did not trade him because of insufficient value in return. Happ, meanwhile, joked it was the media’s fault for making him think he would be traded: “All those stories and the cameras the last couple days at Wrigley, it’s all on you guys.” Happ understands his situation, however. German transgender footballers can 'independently' choose whether to play for a men's or women's team after new regulations were announced by the DFB.  Trans and non-binary players can decide for themselves which team to play for, in contrast to the actions of many sporting bodies in recent days who have reviewed their policy on transgender athletes.  English football's governing body The FA have a 'case by case' approach but is preparing to refine its rules overall.   The row over transgender inclusion is splitting sports worldwide with FIFA among those reviewing their policy on trans players. It was announced on Tuesday that International Rugby League had banned trans players from participating in women’s internationals while further research is conducted.  That followed the decision of FINA, swimming’s world governing body, to stop trans athletes from competing in women’s elite races if they have gone through any part of male puberty. BOSTON (CBS) — Even after the Celtics ripped off an incredible stretch of basketball in the second half of the regular season, they still had their doubters. Sure, Boston was one of the best teams in the league after the new year, but lots of folks questioned if they had what it took to keep that going in the playoffs. So far this postseason, they’ve risen to every challenge thrown their way. A first-round sweep of the Nets was impressive, but their seven-game series win over the Bucks outdid that performance. Beating Giannis Antetokounmpo and the defending champs is exactly what the Boston core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart needed to do to prove that they’re not only ready, but that they can win on the big stage. And while the 2022 trade deadline is still months away, it’s not hard to see a team this inexplicably bad being the biggest sellers. The talent on this roster, while seriously underperforming, is overwhelming. Teams around the league will descend like vultures and leave nothing behind that isn’t nailed down. JD Martinez, Kiké Hernández, Christian Vazquez, Nathan Eovaldi, and countless others will be free agents after this year. Bloom can deal them as short-term rentals to teams that actually have a popsicle’s chance in hell at a postseason run and beef up the farm system,...
ONLY a quarter of football fans support their local team, with others choosing who to support based on the team’s kit, stadium or if anyone else in their family is a fan. A poll of 2,000 followers of the beautiful game found one in 10 picked their side because they liked the kit, 18 per cent were influenced by who their dad liked – and 13 per cent just liked one player. 1Liverpool face Chelsea in this year's FA Cup finalCredit: Reuters Another 10 per cent like to support an underdog team which isn’t doing so well, as they like to see them grow. Others picked their team because they are the most successful (10 per cent), they have the best chants (nine per cent) and they have a ‘cool’ stadium (11 per cent). But more than a quarter (27 per cent) have been mocked for not supporting their local side, as 44 per cent admitted to following more than one team. Although 52 per cent believe it’s ‘wrong’ to root for two teams that both compete in the same...
Seven years ago, John Angelos drew considerable attention for his defense of the public demonstrations, at least the nonviolent variety, that arose in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. Not only did the son of Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos support free speech, but he acknowledged many of the social ills that have plagued the city as the “American political elite,” he tweeted, “shipped middle class and working class jobs away from Baltimore.” It was pretty brave stuff for the normally low-profile family given the realities of Major League Baseball’s predominantly white, older fan base, and it strongly suggested the younger Mr. Angelos fully understood that people living not too far from Camden Yards desperately needed all the financial support they could get. Now contrast that to the recent news that the Maryland Stadium Authority has quietly acquiesced to the Baltimore Orioles “request” that the team keep all the profits from the upcoming Paul McCartney concert at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, or they may not bring such events in the future. The ultimatum wasn’t seeking...

By STEVE MEGARGEE, AP Sports Writer MILWAUKEE (AP) — After a bumpy beginning to their postseason, the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks rediscovered their championship form in plenty of time to dispose of the Chicago Bulls in their opening-round series. READ MORE: Report: Bucks' Khris Middleton Expected To Miss Second-Round Series Against Celtics With MCL InjuryThey likely won’t make it past the next round unless they’re playing at this level right from the start. The Bucks next face the sizzling Boston Celtics, who swept the Brooklyn Nets in the opening round. Their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup begins Sunday in Boston. “They’re the hottest team in the league,” Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said Wednesday after the Bucks’ 116-100 series-clinching Game 5 victory over the Chicago Bulls. “You’d have to be in a cave to not know they’re winning every game. They’re the best defense in the league, got great players, great coaching.” The Bucks don’t expect to have three-time All-Star forward Khris Middleton available for the start of the series. Can Oakland A’s fans fall in love with their favorite team again? After an acrimonious eight-month stretch between the public and ownership in which season ticket prices were raised, talks of parallel paths continued, questions about a new waterfront ballpark persisted, and several star players were jettisoned, the A’s are playing their first home game of the season on Monday, hosting the Baltimore Orioles at the Coliseum. And yet, there’s room for optimism. With a handful of new faces on the roster after several high-profile and increasingly expensive players were shipped out of town, the A’s came out of a challenging 10-game road trip in the Eastern Time Zone against three playoff-caliber teams with a 5-5 record. Behind what’s been a productive offense so far, along with some mostly solid starting pitching, the A’s had a realistic chance to win eight of those 10 games, including Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. “We’re a team that’s going to have to grind games out,” said A’s pitcher Paul Blackburn, who has a 1.80 ERA in two starts. “We’re a...

When the Detroit Lions make their selection in the 2022 NFL draft, it will be after having gone through months of debate and deliberation both internally and externally. Kevin Durant owns the Knicks, and he enjoys it. The former MVP hasn’t lost to the Knicks in nine years, a stretch spanning three teams that continued with Wednesday’s 110-98 Nets’ victory at MSG. Told of his impressive streak, Durant, a dedicated social media user, pumped both fists. “I got something to talk about on Twitter now,” he said after dropping 32 points in 42 minutes. Durant, of course, became the enemy of Knicks fans after spurning the team in 2019 free agency to join the crosstown rival. He has since read angry tweets about the decision, which has turned into a source of entertainment. “We know how much Knicks fans don’t like us,” Durant said. “Especially now this era, with us not choosing the Knicks, me and Kyrie (Irving). It definitely adds something to the rivalry no matter who is on the team. You know, I think it will always be like that in the city. It’s good to be a part of this. It’s a fun rivalry. Hopefully it continues to build. “If we get more and more...
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Christian Braun’s eyes opened wide when he learned that after Kansas had beaten Miami to return to the Final Four such a raging party had broken out back in Lawrence that authorities had to shut down Massachusetts Street, the popular bar and restaurant district near campus. It was a much more welcome shutdown than the one Braun experienced two years earlier. Braun and his teammates were sitting in their hotel room in downtown Kansas City in 2020, waiting to play in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament, and news began filtering out that it had been canceled because of a virus few knew anything about. In short order, the NCAA Tournament also was shut down, and what may have been one of the best teams Jayhawks coach Bill Self had ever assembled would never have a chance to prove it. “We all knew we were a pretty good team that year. We were No. 1 for a long time,” said Braun, who was a role player as a freshman in 2020, but is now...
GABRIELLE VERNIER helped fire her youthful France side to a slick TikTok Women’s Six Nations win over Italy and warned: We’re just getting started. Les Bleues racked up a clinical 39-6 triumph as tries from Madoussou Fall, Emeline Gros, Lea Murie, Emilie Boulard and Chloe Jacquet got their campaign off to a flier. 1France got their Women's Six Nations campaign off to a flier with a bonus-point win over ItalyCredit: Rex Minnows Italy could only muster two penalties through Michela Sillari in response as the six-time champions soared to a maximum-point haul in Grenoble. And 24-year-old centre Vernier, whose team host Ireland next weekend, said: “We will improve in the next game and do better. “There is a lot of youth in our team with a bench with a lot of players who are only around 20. “It's great for France that those young players play these kinds of matches – it’s a good sign for the future for the work we do to go to the Rugby World Cup.” Italy now face the daunting prospect of welcoming three-time defending...
Fans of Serbian side Red Star Belgrade chanted in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine during their 3-0 victory over Vozdovac. Their support of Russia comes as the club have stood by their sponsorship with Moscow energy firm Gazprom. UEFA have insisted they won't order the side to dump their main sponsor ahead of their next Europa League match with Rangers.  The club's general secretary insisted they will keep their main backers after lashing out at 'anti-Russian hysteria'.    The attacks in Ukraine have now been going on for more than a week, with Russian troops attacking Europe's largest nuclear power plant at Zaporizhzhia overnight. And a video posted on YouTube in the aftermath of Red Star Belgrade's victory on Thursday, shows their fans offering their support to Russia despite the horrific attacks in Ukraine. The video shows the Red Star Belgrade fans in the corner of a mostly empty stadium at Vozdovac. They are heard repeatedly chanting 'Russia,' in support of the country's invasion of Ukraine.  Fans of Serbian side Red Star chanted in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine ...
UEFA have handed out their latest punishment following Russia's invasion of Ukraine by forcing football clubs from Belarus as well as its national team to play their home matches at neutral venues. Belarus are only one of four nations that support Moscow's actions of invading Ukraine, which has now entered its eighth day of fighting.   Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko appeared earlier this week to have indicated Vladimir Putin's forces have plans to invade Moldova. Putin's war-mongering sidekick addressed security officials on Tuesday while standing in front of a battle map that seems to show a planned operation from southern Ukraine into its tiny neighbour.  Belarusian army chiefs were then part of a first wave of sanctions imposed by the UK government on Wednesday, with foreign secretary Liz Truss saying Mr Lukashenko had aided and abetted Russia's invasion. And now given their ongoing support of Russia, UEFA have decided to act on the sporting front by also banning spectators from watching games in which Belarus are named as the 'home side'.  All Belarusian clubs and national teams competing in UEFA competitions...
The mother of LBGTQ activist Samuel Brinton has told DailyMail.com of her pride after her son was tapped to serve as deputy assistant secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy by the Biden Administration. Non-binary Brinton, 34, previously revealed their troubled relationship with their Southern Baptist parents Peggy Jo and Stephen Brinton, both 57 – describing how they were forced to take part in conversion therapy as a teen. Brinton also recounted how they were told to leave the family home in Perry, Iowa, after coming out to their parents as bisexual for a second time while at college – forcing them to move in with an uncle in New York. But speaking outside her home, Brinton's mom Peggy Jo said the family difficulties are now in the past and told of her pride in her son's high-powered new job. She said: 'I home schooled him for quite a few years because I knew he would excel and this is what he's doing. It's just amazing. He started working on [nuclear] a few years...

MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper David De Gea has sensationally claimed that the club is CURSED as they approach five years without a trophy. The Red Devils' haven't claimed silverware since the 2016-17 season where they won both the League Cup and Europa League under Jose Mourinho. 2David De Gea cannot understand why Manchester United aren't competing for trophiesCredit: Reuters Ralf Rangnick's side were expected to challenge for the Premier League this term following the summer signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho. But they languish in sixth spot and are in real danger of missing out on Champions League qualification for next term. They were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by West Ham in the third round, while Middlesbrough knocked United of the FA Cup in the fourth round. And if United don't win the European Cup this campaign, it will be their longest trophy drought since 1974. Their failures have left De Gea stunned, as he stated that United 'don't function' as a team. He told Spanish news outlet El Pais: "I think someone has put a curse...

In fact, United have won the last five encounters at Burnley and can set a record on Tuesday by becoming the first team to win six consecutive Premier League games at Turf Moor. What's even more impressive is the fact United have not even conceded a goal in their last six visits to the Clarets. It has been more than a decade since the Burnley crowd had something to cheer when hosting United - with Robbie Blake scoring the winner in a 2009...

ARSENAL have been fined £20,000 for losing their heads after Manchester City’s controversial penalty at the weekend. Furious Gunners players surrounded referee Stuart Attwell after he gave City’s equalising spot-kick after being recommended to view Granit Xhaka’s clash with Bernardo Silva on the pitchside monitor. 2Arsenal have been fined £20k because of their players' poor behaviour against Man CityCredit: Getty Players from both sides engaged in a bout of pushing and shoving after the changed decision. Xhaka, incandescent at being penalised, told the referee he should look again after he saw the incident replayed on the giant screens at the Emirates. Arsenal players including Gabriel attempted to scuff up the penalty spot, although Riyad Mahrez still drilled home. But the Gunners accepted a charge of failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion under FA Rule E20.1 and received the standard penalty. The FA is still considering action after City matchwinner Rodri and team-mates were pelted with missiles while celebrating his injury-time strike.
