by Ross Pomeroy   For people sleeping in close proximity to someone else, the first yawn in the morning can be chemical warfare. “Yuck, your breath reeks!” Yes, morning breath can be quite foul. Decreased saliva levels during sleep prevent normal flushing of oral bacteria. As you lie immobilized at night, they can rapidly proliferate, emitting foul-smelling chemical compounds in the process. Researchers at the University of Helsinki recently sought to characterize these gases in unprecedented detail. So they recruited fifteen men and fifteen women, all healthy and between the ages of 21 and 63, to hold their breath for five seconds then exhale into a 1.3-Liter sampling bag immediately after waking up. Subjects then brushed their teeth as they normally would and repeated the breath-collecting process. They returned their sampling bags to the laboratory the same day. When the scientists analyzed the morning breath samples using mass spectrometry, they found sulfur compounds like methanethiol and dimethyl sulfide to be present in large amounts, and clearly contributing to the putrid smell. Chemist Derek Lowe previously described the odor of these sulfur compounds as...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Parts of North Carolina’s largest city were overcome with a foul smell like rotten eggs on Thursday after an environmental cleanup company destroyed tanks that contained a harmless gas odorant, a natural gas company says. Piedmont Natural Gas said the cleanup company, Legacy Environmental Services, was destroying mercaptan tanks north of downtown Charlotte that were mistakenly reported as empty, The Charlotte Observer reported. The Charlotte Fire Department said four storage tanks were involved. Because natural gas has no smell, Piedmont uses mercaptan — also known as methanethiol — to give the gas “a distinctive smell of rotten eggs,” the utility said in a news release. A temperature inversion likely spread the smell, city officials said. An inversion happens as air temperature increases with altitude and traps smells closer to the ground, according to the National Weather Service. Piedmont spokesman Jason Wheatley said the utility did not hire the Charlotte company. He referred other questions to Legacy, which didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment on Thursday. The Environmental Protection Agency...

After more than two weeks of breathing noxious fumes that can cause headaches and nausea, Carson-area residents are now being advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exercise at night and in the early morning. The amount of hydrogen sulfide gas emanating from decaying vegetation and marine life in the Dominguez Channel has exceeded state nuisance thresholds in some locations but is not considered “imminently dangerous,” Los Angeles County public health officials said Tuesday. Still, they recommended that people avoid prolonged outdoor activities between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. and whenever the smell, which has been likened to rotten eggs, vomit and farts, is particularly strong. Businesses where the odor is strong should run air conditioners for several hours before workers show up, they said. “The levels noted can cause notable discomfort, irritation, or certain asymptomatic non-sensory effects,” L.A. County public health officials said in a news release. “However, the effects are not expected to be disabling, but are expected to be transient and reversible as the exposure decreases or stops.” Previously, officials had recommended that people close their doors...
Calling it an “issue of health and environmental injustice,” Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-San Pedro) on Monday asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency over an overpowering foul smell that has sickened residents of Carson and surrounding communities for more than two weeks. The ongoing stench — which Los Angeles County officials say is caused by hydrogen sulfide coming from decaying vegetation in the Dominguez Channel — was first reported to the South Coast Air Quality Management District on Oct. 3. It took 12 days for county crews to begin treating the flood control channel to mitigate the odor. “The lack of a swift response by the responsible government agencies has been very disappointing,” Barragán wrote in a letter to Newsom. Public health officials are recommending Carson residents keep their doors and windows closed as authorities work to address a foul odor that has plagued the city for nearly a week. The aroma, which has been likened online to the smell of vomit, “a fart bomb” and unwashed body parts, is emanating from the Dominguez Channel, a drain channel that crosses through industrial areas on its way to the Port of Los Angeles. A team from the South Coast Air Quality Management District inspected the area last week and initially suspected that “organic material” stranded on the channel banks by low tide was causing the noxious scent. But Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes announced Friday that “the cause and location have been identified as a Hydrogen Sulfide leaking pipeline.” The gas, which gives off a rotten eggs smell and can be toxic, is used in refineries and other businesses similar to those that line the channel. BALTIMORE (WJZ) — If you live near Lake Montebello, you may have noticed a foul odor coming from the lake recently. That’s because the Baltimore City Department of Public Works is lowering the water level over the next two weeks to help with plant upgrades. By lowering the water level, exposed rocks, branches, debris and pockets of sludge are exposed- which causes the foul odor.
BO’s odiferous origins have been revealed. In a discovery that will no doubt benefit pungent people worldwide, UK scientists have followed the scent of body odor back to a “BO enzyme” that predates modern man. The smelly study, conducted by the University of York in collaboration with hygiene giant Unilever, could lead to the development of more effective deodorants in the future, reports SciTechDaily. “Solving the structure of this ‘BO enzyme’ has allowed us to pinpoint the molecular step inside certain bacteria that makes the odor molecules,” said study co-author Dr. Michelle Rudden of the University of York. Specifically, they’ve identified the DNA of the Staphylococcus hominis bacteria, the main microbe involved in processing sweat molecules that give off body odor. Previously, the University of York researchers had discovered that only a few bacteria in your armpit facilitate the stench, but never pinpointed the specific culprit until now. As it turns out, this microscopic funk farmer was present in our now extinct, or should we say ex-stink-t, prehistoric predecessors, and could have played an important role in societal communication between...
