Two Jewish brothers who fled Nazi Germany on the last train out of Berlin before World War II have been reunited with the son of the man who made their escape possible 81 years on. Identical twins George and Peter Summerfield, 87, escaped with their parents to Holland in August 1939 – their possessions crammed into two suitcases. But they were only able to afford the rail fare because of the kindness of family friend Adolf Schädler, the caretaker of their apartment block. His son Rolf was the boys' childhood playmate, and now, thanks to BBC Two documentary Saved by a Stranger, the Summerfields have reconnected with him after more than 80 years. But in a bitterly ironic twist, they discovered that after helping their father, Adolf had been imprisoned in Oranienburg concentration camp - one of the first Nazi detention centres for political opponents of their barbaric regime. He died in 1957 never having recovered from his ordeal. 'My parents spoke about your family a lot,' Peter, who lives in London, told Rolf. Two Jewish brothers who fled...
Alejandra Juarez as shown in a video broadcast during last year's Democratic National Convention. Alejandra Juarez, the undocumented military spouse cruelly deported by the previous president despite outcries from legislators and advocates, will soon be returning home to the United States. Orlando Sentinel reports that the Biden administration has granted the mother of two U.S. citizen daughters humanitarian parole. “This is the moment I’ve been waiting for,” Juarez told the Sentinel. She’s expected to arrive to Florida on Saturday—just in time for Mother’s Day. “Once inside, I’m going to keep fighting and hopefully there’s a way I can find a permanent solution, but this is great,” she said. Juarez fled Mexico for the U.S. as a teen, eventually falling onto Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) radar following a traffic stop. She was allowed to stay in the U.S. as long as she checked in regularly with the agency, but then became a priority for deportation under the previous administration’s policies. While Juarez counted Democratic Rep. Darren Soto among her advocates (he filed a private bill in an attempt to keep her family together), she was deported in 2018.  The...

Newly-released footage has shown the moment officers shot dead a homeless black man after he allegedly reached for a deputy's gun, as his family say cops escalated the situation when they tackled him to the ground over an alleged jaywalking incident.  Kurt Reinhold, a 42-year-old father-of-two and former bodybuilder who had fallen on hard times, was shot dead on September 23 when Orange County Sheriff's Deputies Eduardo Duran and Jonathan Israel confronted him at a California intersection.  The footage, released by the Orange County Sheriff's Office Wednesday, includes dashcam video from the deputies' patrol car, security camera footage from a nearby motel and footage shot on a bystander's smartphone.   It provides new insight into the events surrounding Reinhold's death with the victim's family saying it proves the officers had 'no reason' to stop him. The dashcam video shows the two deputies appearing to sit in wait for Reinhold to jaywalk across the street before they then joke and have a minor disagreement about whether he had in fact illegally crossed the street and if it was necessary to confront him.
