For years I considered myself a bad sleeper. It’s something I’m not very good at, like physics, cryptic crosswords and dealing with difficult tradespeople. Sleep is not in my skillset.  And, understandably, there are negative connotations with this line of thinking. Like a perennial yo-yo dieter, convinced that all of life’s problems would disappear if only they were a stone lighter, I’ve spent a sizeable part of my adult life telling myself I’d be a much better mother, wife, daughter, sister, employee, boss, runner, cook and poker player if I could get that magical eight hours of uninterrupted shut-eye a night.  The truth is, since having children — both now in their 20s — I rarely get more than six hours. I can get by on four or five, as long as I haven’t drunk any alcohol the night before. I haven’t set an alarm clock for more than 25 years, apart from for early flights (when I’m usually awake anyway because I’m so nervous/excited).  I tend to sleep in batches: retiring between 10pm and 11pm and sleeping solidly until...
When Dr Anne Anderson sat at her computer on a March evening last year to host one of her usually well-received lectures, she was relieved to see that about 50 people had signed up for her online chat on Scandinavian design. Her previous talk, delivered in conjunction with the Arts Society, had been a different story: with the nation gripped by the broadcast interview given by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to chat show host Oprah Winfrey, in which they accused the Royal Family of racism and wrongdoing, Anne had struggled to attract double figures. With that in mind, 65-year-old Anne cracked a joke, saying that she hoped attendance would be better now she didn't have to compete with the 'dreaded Meghan'. It was the start of a brief, good-natured exchange with subscribers in which the academic observed that 'you couldn't turn the television on without some person of a colourful' (by which she meant excitable) 'disposition having a moan about something'. It didn't seem to Anne that anyone was upset by this view at the time. 'The interesting...
New York (CNN Business)Starting in May, MSNBC's highest-rated star Rachel Maddow will be hosting her 9 p.m. Eastern show just one day a week — on Mondays — while she pivots to other projects for parent company NBCUniversal. The new schedule has an end-of-an-era feel for MSNBC, since so much of the channel has been built around Maddow for more than a decade.CNN reported last August, when Maddow signed a new multi-year deal, that she planned to shift from daily to weekly programs.Sources said she would be moving to more of a weekly format in 2022 — but MSNBC and Maddow did not confirm it at the time. Then, in January, Maddow announced a "hiatus" from her prime time show so that she could work on other projects, like podcasts and potential TV dramas.Read MoreNBC News journalists vexed by MSNBCs move to hire White House press secretary Jen PsakiThis tracked with the portrayal of her new contract back in August: A production arrangement across NBC, like a news business version of the entertainment showrunner deals that have proliferated across Hollywood.Maddow returned from...
BOSTON (CBS) — It looks like the Bruins will be without one of their top blue liners in Friday night’s tilt against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Defenseman Hampus Lindholm was not part of the team’s morning lines and will likely miss the game due to an injury. Lindholm suffered that injury — termed a lower body injury —  in the second period of Tuesday night’s loss to the Red Wings when he collided with Detroit forward Pius Sutter. He grabbed his left leg after the collision and did not return to the game. PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – This weekend is perhaps the most universally disliked weekend of the year – it’s the weekend we all lose an hour of sleep as we spring forward to Daylight Saving Time. The cons can be serious and the pros last from now until fall. READ MORE: Beaver Area School District Postpones Scheduled SAT TestingA lot of people agree, they wish that we could just stay in DST, keeping more daylight into the evening. Our bodies feel the same, not just mentally, but at a cellular level. “These cells can get out of whack,” AHN sleep specialist Dr. Daniel Shade said. Dr. Shade said the Daylight Saving Time effect goes just beyond fatigue and feeling sleepy. “The sleep deprivation itself by losing an hour can cause an increase in an accident,” he explained. “We’ve seen on the day after we switch to Daylight Saving Time, the risk of heart attack and the admissions for heart attack goes up by about 25-percent on that Monday after we switch.” While it may seem on...
Batman, never a day person, is plunged into perpetual night in Matt Reeves’ nocturnal, nihilist, neo-noir take on the Caped Crusader. Reeves’ three-hour-long “The Batman” includes plenty of action, character introductions, gadgets and other various superhero accoutrement. But it is no extravaganza. This “Batman” is a morose mood piece, soaked in shadow and rage, that has stripped the comic’s archetypes down to abstracted silhouettes and grubbily human characters. If Jim Carrey’s Riddler were to wander into this movie, he would fit in about as well as Bugs Bunny in “Taxi Driver.” Scorsese’s movie, with Travis Bickle sneering at societal collapse, was a prominent influence on Todd Phillips’ muddled “Joker,” but it may be more so for “The Batman,” which likewise rests on the precarious psychology of its DC protagonist. Robert Pattinson’s is a young Batman, relatively new to the gig and suffering mightily from the nightly battles with Gotham’s most depraved. A feeling of helplessness consumes him, and a sense that he can never stem the tide. “It’s a big city,” he says in the movie’s opening. “I...

The tree is not the thing. It’s the sugary lead up to Christmas, with its dizzying array of cookie exchanges, chocolate advent calendars and pies galore, that makes Jewish kids young and old feel left out during the holidays. Foil-wrapped gelt just doesn’t quite compare. In the Bay Area, Jewish foodmakers are whipping up classic and wildly creative treats to make sure this year’s Hanukkah options go beyond not-particularly-chocolatey chocolate coins. Restaurants like Meso in San Jose and Pomella in Oakland are offering spiffed-up versions of sufganiyot. BEFORE every night out, us girls face a crucial decision - either commit to taking a coat to the club and putting it in the cloakroom OR brave the cold and go without. Naturally, we always opt for the latter and over the years we've got pretty good at dealing with the freezing temperatures. 4Scientists have revealed why women generally don't feel the cold on nights outCredit: Getty Well it turns out, there's actually a scientific explanation behind this. In August, the British Journal of Psychology published a new study titled "When looking 'hot' means not feeling cold: Evidence that self-objectification inhibits feelings of being cold". Posting on her TikTok account, one of the study's co-authors Roxanne Felig explained how they were intrigued by the Cardi B lyric: "It's cold outside but I'm still looking like a t****** because a h** never gets cold." Roxanne explained: "So basically, it seems like what Cardi was saying was that she was too focussed on how she looked and what she was wearing to feel cold. FABULOUS BINGO: GET A £5 FREE BONUS...

The Woketard Olympics are officially a ratings catastrophe and are getting more catastrophic by the day. On Wednesday, the NBC Olympics’ telecast broke an all-time low of 14.6 million viewers. Then, on Thursday night, that record was broken again by an all-new low of just 13.3 million viewers. In a country of 330 million-plus, fewer than five percent tuned in, lol. Thursday night was a 42 percent drop from the Summer Rio Games in 2016. Wednesday was a 34 percent drop. These are breathtaking numbers, an astonishing failure, especially when you’re talking about a one-year delay of the Games caused by the China Flu, which should’ve boosted anticipation. Not to mention the fact that a lot of people are still staying home due to the virus. Aaaaand, on top of all that, the Woketard Olympics can now be watched everywhere due to NBC’s streaming and online services. It should be noted that these awful, horrible, humiliating numbers do include the numbers across all viewing platforms, including streaming. There is no excuse for these numbers. None. There is a reason, though...

Hollywood actress and Goop wellness company founder Gwyneth Paltrow, whose net worth is estimated at $150 million, says she ate bread and drank alcohol “seven nights a week” in order to cope with quarantine protocols implemented in response to the coronavirus. “During quarantine, I was drinking seven nights a week, and making pasta, and eating bread, like, I went totally off the rails,” Paltrow said during an interview on the Smartless podcast. “I mean, who drinks multiple drinks seven nights a week? Like, that’s not healthy.” The Avengers: Endgame star was drinking, as she put it, “too much,” to cope during quarantine, while millions of Americans were thrown into economic uncertainty as states ordered businesses to close, leaving millions of Americans left to rely on unemployment benefits to get by. The Goop founder also clarified that she remembered going to bed every night, adding, “I’m not, like, black-out.” In February, after noting that she had been suffering from the coronavirus, Paltrow told fans that a “functional medicine practitioner” said to her that she should engage in an “intuitive fasting” program to help her get over the virus....

FANS are begging the WWE to reconsider reverting back to a single seven-eight hour show for WrestleMania 38 next year. Because of the pandemic, the last two editions of the popular event have been spread over two separate nights, rather than all in one go. 4Vince McMahon has been urged to keep the two-night formatCredit: Getty The changes appeared to go down well with many fans, as they were able to split up watching the 14 matches into two sittings. Amid plans for the WWE to revert back to its old format, fans online have cried out for that not to be the case. One wrote: "Nobody wants to see 7 hours boring show again. This year's mania best since WM 31. 31 last non seven hours WM." And another added: "Ffs we’re back to 6-7 hour shows…" A third commented: "2 nights is the way to go. I’m sorry." And a fourth opined: "If they want to do just one night for next year, then it has to be 7-10 matches. Nothing more. We don’t need another 12 hour...

Sony’s State of Play livestream showed off a host of games coming to the PlayStation 5, including a creepy horror game called Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. This game is part of the Five Night at Freddy’s franchise, which is based around the horror of Chuck E. Cheese-esque environments full of murderous animatronics. Security Breach is being developed by Steel Wool Studios, who were behind Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted. This looks like the largest addition to the franchise yet, as it takes place inside a shopping mall, and the trailer showed off a few environments: a Freddy Fazbear’s pizza parlor, a mini-golf course, and a kids’ playground. It also looks like there’s a strong narrative element, with mysterious figures taunting the protagonists, one of whom is a mall security guard. The game was announced in August 2019, and players have found ARG-style messages hidden in a promotional website’s code leading up to the lore of the final game. Security Breach will arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC sometime in 2021; there is no...
WHEN will we be free to see who we want, when we want, where we want and do whatever we want with them? That is the question everyone is still asking. Another question that might be worth posing is this: Are we really as ready to be free as we think we are? ???? Seems a rather quaint idea now. Sometimes the pub would be deserted, other times it would be packed, with not a seat to be had. Either way, we’d go on in. I now wonder how long it will be before I will feel entirely comfortable going into a rammed pub like that. I think it will be a good while yet, probably long after the rules have changed....

How did you sleep last night? The chances are, not very well. At times of increased anxiety or financial stress, if your routine has been disrupted or you’ve drunk more booze then is normal, then a good night’s rest is the first thing to go. It’s no wonder, then, that the coronavirus has made insomniacs of us. A survey commissioned by sleep scientist Dr Guy Meadows at The Sleep School reported that 42 per cent of its 3,000 respondents think their sleep has worsened since the pandemic began. More than half said they were now ‘dissatisfied with their sleep’, citing ‘work worries’ as the main reason. Other studies report even higher figures. According to the British Sleep Society, about three-quarters of us have seen a change in sleep habits since we first heard the word ‘coronavirus’, and less than half are getting refreshing sleep. Four writers reveal how they're dealing with Covid-somnia, as it's revealed 42 per cent of people have had worse sleep since the pandemic (file image) On social media, traffic is increasing at night as hashtags such as...

Mike Blake | Reuters Hershey saw a strange pattern emerge in the early spring. Sales of Hershey's milk chocolate six-packs spiked online and in stores well ahead of Memorial Day, the typical kickoff to summer camping trips and backyard gatherings. S'more season started early and continued for months, Chief Growth Officer Kristen Riggs said Thursday at a virtual conference hosted by the National Retail Federation. "It was the biggest s'mores season we've ever had," she said. Families made the treats in the backyard to break up monotony during the pandemic. In parts of the country with higher Covid-19 rates, she said Hershey saw a 40% to 50% increase in sales of those milk chocolate packs versus other areas. The s'mores surge is an example of the growth opportunities that the snack and confectionary company sees as consumers spend more time at home and try to create occasions during the global health crisis. Riggs said it wants to take part in new traditions like family movie nights, suggest recipes that include its candies and cater to customers who want a tasty...
OK. So maybe it isn’t such a terrible idea to keep the Garden empty. Oh, yes, this is the flip side. It’s been easy to get caught up in what the Knicks have done across the first 10 games of this season. Many nights they have been worth the price of admission: hungry, resilient, fun to watch, easy to root for, delivering unexpected victories, providing unanticipated hope. Then there comes a night like Sunday night, paired with a night like Friday night, and it’s a cold bucket of water falling off a tall building. The Nuggets came in and rolled the Knicks 114-89 two nights after Oklahoma City beat them, and for all the nights in the early stages of this season when it seemed like such a terrible calamity that fans couldn’t be there to bear witness, this weekend it felt like those same folks had been spared. As had the Knicks. At least they could suffer in silence. “We’re not playing well,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said, “and we have to fix it.” The Knicks aren’t playing well,...

Why? Well, it’s pretty easy to figure. He lives for this stuff. Belichick’s Patriots were left for dead earlier this season when they sat at 2-5 after losing four straight games for the first time since 2002. The wolves were circling, yelling about how Belichick was nothing without Tom Brady and how the Patriots, as we knew them, were done. Now, however, the Patriots are 6-6 and back in the hunt for a playoff spot in the AFC....

The “RHONJ” star told Page Six Style that while she usually spends the holidays in Miami with her husband, Evan, and their four children, Jonas, Adin, Hudson and Alexis, she’s excited to make new memories in New Jersey. “I’m just really looking forward to relaxing and not having the pressure of any plans and not packing,” Goldschneider, 44, said. “I’m trying to see the bright side of being home. Emily Lampi has relied on Zoom calls to form relationships within her sorority. Emily Lampi Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional college experience has been upended for students across the US, and "normal" college activities have halted.  Greek life, which is predicated largely on social interaction, looks different. UF sororities and fraternities have now welcomed their newest batch of members. Freshman Emily Lampi is justifying the cost — which can range from $900 to $3,500 — by celebrating the small positive moments that have happened and focusing on the long-term reasons she joined.
