Dear Amy: I’m a 28-year-old man. My best friend from childhood, “Kenneth,” recently got engaged. I couldn’t be happier for him. Kenneth has decided that I won’t be his best man in the wedding. His future bride’s brother, “Bart,” will be. When he told me about this, I was a little hurt, although I quickly got over myself. I know that his wedding is not about me. Then, a few weeks later, Kenneth and I went out to dinner. We laughed and joked and had a wonderful time, until Kenneth made a joke about me being the “best man” but Bart the “better man” (because he had chosen him over me). I laughed a little to play along, but honestly this hurt me deeply. Kenneth and I have talked many times about what a jerk Bart is. He’s rude, ungrateful, spoiled and entitled. He is also a womanizer. I tried to forget about this silly remark, but it has now been repeated several times, not just by Kenneth but by other members of the bridal party. Even though it’s always...

President Joe Biden compared his scheme to forgive millions in student debt to the vital paycheck protection relief scheme that was rolled out at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The president made his remarks in front of 3,000 guests at the Phoenix Awards dinner hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in Washington DC on Saturday. Biden told the audience: 'I don't wanna hear a word from those members of Congress, you notice, whose families got tens of thousands of dollars and several million dollars in pandemic relief loan forgiveness.'  He added: 'The same ones criticizing. Gimme a break, come on.' In August, Biden said that the U.S. government will forgive $10,000 in student loans for millions of debt-saddled former college students, keeping a pledge he made in the 2020 campaign for the White House.  On Saturday, Biden went on to say: 'We can afford to cancel $10,000 in student debt and 20,000 bucks if you had a Pell Grant for Americans making under $125 grand.' He also referred to the handout as a 'game changer.'  Among those who...

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley condemned the Biden administration for asking the FBI to help tackle violence and intimidation at heated school board meetings, saying it was 'unprecedented' and 'unconstitutional.' The meetings have been flashpoints for anger this year over everything from pandemic mask mandates to critical race theory. Last week, Biden's attorney general announced federal agencies, including the FBI, would look into growing cases of harassment, intimidation and threats directed at parents and educators. But Hawley, of Missouri, said it was an effort to silence parents.  'I had the opportunity this past week to confront the Justice Department about their effort to use the FBI to silence these parents,' he told OAN, a hardline, rightwing political TV channel, after speaking at the Vote, Pray, Stand Summit in Virginia on Friday. Dear Amy: I recently purchased a beautiful vacation cabin with a couple. I own 50 percent and they own 50 percent. They also have 6-year-old twins. As covid struck the country, many Americans had their first encounter with the concept of "public health." We heard about testing and "positivity rates" and contact tracing. We obeyed orders to lock down, to minimize social contact and, eventually, to wear masks. But since last spring, misconceptions have been rampant. People from across the political spectrum have overly focused on individual risk of the disease when, as far as public health is concerned, what matters is community risk. Others have gone farther, painting public health efforts as an affront to American liberty and, by proxy, to American identity. These critics, typically Republicans, have argued that we should rely on "personal responsibility" over government action. This antipathy toward public health fundamentally misunderstands how, historically, infectious disease has been contained. Americans rarely encounter infectious disease precisely because public health strategy has minimized reliance on individual responsibility. Even before the advent of bacteriology and virology, it was clear that humans transmitted disease to one another in some cases, and, in many others, polluted the common environment. In response to this human-based threat, public...
nadia_bormotova/Getty Images Woebot is an artificial intelligence-based tool that offers cognitive-behavioral therapy to users. I experimented with using the bot for two weeks because I'm unsatisfied with my therapist. I was in a good mood after talking to the bot every day.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. After months of searching for a therapist to cope with my anxiety, I found someone that accepted my health insurance. At first, I felt a sense of relief. But lately, I've been disappointed in the sessions, as my therapist keeps telling me to think positively rather than talking about one topic in depth. So in an attempt to find satisfying mental health treatment, I tried Woebot for two weeks. Woebot is an artificial intelligence-based tool that uses cognitive-behavioral therapy, a form of therapy that prompts you to change unhelpful thinking patterns.  Founded in 2017, Woebot is one of many mental health care apps that provides virtual therapy.  While Woebot doesn't claim to be a replacement for a real therapist, it may be especially useful in our present moment. On Tuesday, Don Lemon tersely responded to a derisive segment about him that Tucker Carlson did the previous night over on Fox News. “I just want to fill you in on something that is going on at the Fox propaganda network,” said Lemon. “I don’t usually respond to these things. I don’t like to punch down, and I’d rather focus on issues on this show that are important to you, other than someone taking potshots at me.” Lemon then cut to a clip of Carlson’s show from Monday, in which the Fox News host said of Lemon, “No, he does not live in Section 8 housing. He lives in one of the Whitest towns in America. In fact, 80%.” “Section 8 housing,” said a disgusted Lemon. “Let me simply just say this. If you think that a Black person who doesn’t live in public housing can’t experience or understand racism in this country, well, that just says much more about you and your ignorance on these issues than it does about me.” In the offending segment, Carlson repeatedly mispronounced Lemon’s...
You can switch from your old phone to a new Google Pixel, or you can close your eyes, breathe, and then mindfully switch to a new Google Pixel. Sorry, I’m trying to force myself into the higher plane of existence that the narrator of this new ad-meets-ASMR meditation session from Google is on, and the edibles haven’t kicked in yet. The video above guides you through the process of getting all of your data onto a new Pixel, with meditative advice laid atop a slideshow of gorgeous vistas. It’s relaxing at first, but don’t take it too seriously. The chill vibes eventually give way to a cutting line of existential dread that then pivots the video completely into cringey meme territory. Just a snippet of one-liners from the video to quickly get you in the zone in case you don’t have time to watch. What follows is a lightly edited transcript of The News Brig’s Slack after editor Chris Welch pasted in the link with the ever-appropriate reaction “…what.” Me: this is actually...

The high-security Lyford Cay estate on New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamas, is one of the world's richest enclaves. It was there, in a bungalow backing on to an exclusive private golf club, that Sean Connery passed away in his sleep on Saturday at the age of 90. In death, Connery has finally escaped James Bond. He always knew it could happen only one way: 'It's with me till I go in the box.' He used to growl those words with resentment, even though the 6ft 2in one-time milkman and bodybuilder owed both his fame and the foundation of his £316 million fortune to Ian Fleming's 007. In fact, he discovered the home where he was to end his days while filming scenes for the Bond film Thunderball near by. A golf-mad Scot, Connery bought the house — named Out of Bounds — because of its proximity to a course, and from the 1980s onwards he and his wife of 45 years, Micheline, 91, would spend most of each winter enjoying the sunshine in the tax haven...

Dr. Anthony Fauci knocked down President Donald Trump’s claims about the coronavirus affecting only older people. The infectious disease expert apparently took umbrage to the president’s assurance to rallygoers Monday in Ohio that only “elderly people with heart problems and other problems” can get sick from the COVID-19 pandemic. “In some states, thousands of people — nobody young,” Trump told his supporters. “Below the age of 18, like, nobody. They have a strong immune system, who knows? Take your hat off to the young, because they have a hell of an immune system. But it affects virtually nobody. It’s an amazing thing.” Fauci appeared the following morning on CNN, where medical expert Sanjay Gupta took exception to the president’s remarks as inaccurate and disrespectful to older Americans. “It’s very disrespectful to me,” Fauci said, laughing. “Because I’m in my 70s, I’m like your father — I could be your father, Sanjay — so it isn’t just the elderly and those with underlying conditions. It can be serious in young people. Quantitatively for sure, it’s much, much less as serious as...
