SoFi Stadium was filled with Kansas City Chiefs fans for the Los Angeles Chargers home game on Sunday Night Football. Prior to Week 11, it was revealed that the Sunday Night Football game would be changed. In place of the Cincinnati Bengals-Pittsburgh Steelers game, NBC had the Los Angeles Chargers hosting the rival Kansas City Chiefs. This game was an opportunity for the Chargers to gain ground on the Chiefs in the AFC West standings, especially with the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders well out of the picture. When it comes to SoFi Stadium, the home team crowd doesn’t exactly fill up the majority of the seats. That was evident on Sunday night, as the stadium was filled primarily with Chiefs fans. The new unit, called GM Energy, aims to build on the battery and software expertise that GM has amassed in recent years to develop a new line of electric vehicles that will, in time, replace its internal-combustion offerings. GM Energy will offer products and services for what the company calls "energy management," including hardware such as batteries and solar panels as well as hydrogen fuel cells and — importantly — cloud-based software that can link these offerings with electric vehicles and utility companies. The products, some of which will be provided by partners, can be tailored for individual homeowners as well as businesses, including companies operating fleets of electric vehicles. The commercial operations are already underway, while home energy systems will be available starting next year as...
As more and more consumers purchase electric vehicles, many are discovering the significant benefits of home charging. Fueling an EV at a public charging station continues to be slower than filling a tank with gasoline, but the convenience and low cost of home charging greatly outweigh this relatively infrequent drawback. These advantages are increasing because state-of-the-art EVs are now traveling much greater distances on a single charge, reducing the frequency of visits to public charging stations during longer excursions. Improving widespread access to home charging is emerging as a key prerequisite to full-scale EV adoption, and promising new technologies are being developed to overcome barriers. In most cases, homeowners are able to install rapid Level 2 home chargers that can fully refuel an EV overnight, when electricity rates are low. The cost of the installation is minor compared to the purchase price of the EV and is rightly seen as an indispensable investment. In some cases, however, a homeowner’s existing electrical panel is already near its full capacity, and upgrading the panel to handle the additional load of an EV...
PUBLIC EV charging requires knowledge of compatibility considerations. And EV charging ports can vary based on government regulations and a car’s manufacturer. 2Teslas chargingCredit: Getty Level 1 charging is the slowest public EV charging option—taking 10 or more hours to achieve a full charge. Most EV drivers utilizing a Level 1 charger do so at home and overnight. Level 1 chargers can be plugged into a standard 120-volt outlet and feature a SAE J1772 connector. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- If anyone had doubts about the Chargers' future in Los Angeles, owner Dean Spanos is hoping Wednesday's ceremonial groundbreaking for a new team headquarters answers them. The Chargers have already started work on the 14-acre site, which is slated for completion in July 2024."It's been five years in the making. We finally have our home for the future. This is our home now," Spanos said. The Chargers left San Diego for Los Angeles in 2017. They played in a soccer stadium in Carson for three seasons before becoming co-tenants with the Rams at SoFi Stadium in 2020.While searching for a location for a permanent facility, the Chargers have had temporary headquarters in Costa Mesa - which is in Orange County - since 2017.Most of the sites the Chargers considered for their new home were in Los Angeles County. The headquarters will be less than 3 miles from Los Angeles International Airport and 7 miles from SoFi Stadium. Sonnenblick-Eichner Co. in Beverly Hills announced in March it has arranged $276 million of construction and permanent financing for the facility.

One of the most important technical specifications of an electric vehicle is the speed at which it can refuel at home. Every EV has an onboard charger that converts alternating current into direct current so that the electricity can then be delivered to the vehicle’s battery. Level One and Level Two home charging stations supply alternating current that has to pass through the EV’s onboard charger. The maximum speed at which the onboard charger can receive and convert alternating current is referred to as its “acceptance rate”, and is measured in kilowatts. Level Three fast chargers use 480 volts to deliver direct current straight to the battery, bypassing the onboard charger, but these expensive, industrial strength public chargers are meant to get long-distance motorists back on the road quickly and are not suitable for home installations. Level One trickle-chargers are quite slow, but allow EVs to be plugged into any existing 120 volt AC receptacle. Onboard chargers are designed to maximize the charging capabilities of Level Two home charging stations, which can deliver anywhere from 12 to 64 amperes...
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — When Justin Herbert and rookie head coach Brandon Staley won four of their first five games together, the Los Angeles Chargers appeared to be at the start of something special. They’ve taken three defeats in their ensuing four games instead. The midseason skid culminated with a 27-20 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in which both the offense and defense were respectable, but not impressive in any aspect — and not nearly good enough to win. Despite blowing a third-quarter lead and getting soundly outgained at home by an opponent with a losing record, Herbert and his teammates insist they’ve got enough time and talent to prevent this season from going sideways — you know, the direction of so many recent campaigns for a team with two playoff wins in the last 12 years. “I think we need to keep being ourselves,” Herbert said after passing for 195 yards with a touchdown and an interception that set up Minnesota’s first touchdown drive. “We need to keep getting better, and to keep learning and to...

They’re the only NFL team to win a Super Bowl for the city, which quickly made them cultural icons. The Raiders left in 1994 but are still arguably the most popular team in Los Angeles. Every time the team travels to face the Chargers, fans donning silver and black flood the stands. It always feels like a home game for the Raiders. Even though the Chargers are more exciting now and just beat the Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Derek Carr is still expecting it to be a home game for his team. “In my past, before playing in SoFi last year with no fans, whether it was in Los Angeles at that soccer stadium or in Qualcomm in San Diego, it was another home game,” Carr said of facing the Chargers. “You always looked at it as another home game and that was no disrespect, it’s just a...

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Four years and eight months after the Los Angeles Chargers relocated, they finally got what they sought when they moved up from San Diego to the nation’s second-largest metropolis. For the first time Sunday, the Chargers took the field in their spectacular new stadium in front of fans — a roaring, enthusiastic crowd of 70,240. But the fulfillment of this star-crossed franchise’s quest has come with a twist worthy of a “Twilight Zone” episode, or maybe a rub of a monkey’s paw — if that twist was a surprise, that is. Tens of thousands of the fans packing SoFi Stadium avidly, vocally supported the Chargers’ opponent, the Dallas Cowboys. Many seating sections were thoroughly dominated by Dallas’ dark-blue and silver color scheme. One lower-bowl area seemed to have more Ezekiel Elliott jerseys than every other article of clothing combined. “It felt a lot of ways like a home game, definitely a home game,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said. To be sure, the Chargers had tens of thousands of their own fans in Inglewood. When Los Angeles...
Getty Micah Parsons threw a bit of shade at the Chargers. After the Dallas Cowboys pulled out a thrilling victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, some of the players and coaches took a few slight jabs at the losing side. Micah Parsons made his debut at defensive end and noted some of the Chargers had a “long day” against him in the loss. Parsons had a modest stat line with two tackles and one sack, but his ability to get to Justin Herbert was felt throughout the Week 2 win. “It was natural,” Parsons noted in his postgame presser, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “Some people had a long day out there today.” It has only been two games into his NFL career, but Ezekiel Elliott is already impressed with Parson’s potential. Elliott described Parsons as a “beast” adding that he was thankful the rookie is on the Cowboys. “Dude’s a beast … he was killing that right tackle out there, they had to start double-teaming him, I think they even held him a couple times,” Elliott...

Power's first-ever survey on electric vehicle charging options for U.S. drivers of plug-in hybrids and battery-electrics away from home. The global analytics company's 2021 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Public Charging Study surveyed 6,647 owners of battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles from January through June. It said public charging availability in the U.S. varies regionally but is still one of the least satisfying aspects of owning an electric vehicle. Customers were asked about ease of use, charging speed, cost of charging, ease of payment, how easy it was to locate a charging station, the convenience and cleanliness of each location, things to do while charging, how safe they felt at a given public charging location, and whether or not chargers were available when needed. The survey found that U.S. EV owners are frustrated by a lack of options. Where they do have access to public charging stations, EV owners were most commonly vexed by out of service...

Ford has stopped selling its Level 2 home chargers for the Mustang Mach-E after discovering some weren’t working, the company tells The News Brig. The issue, which was first reported by Automotive News, has to do with the wall-box chargers registering a fault and stopping charging altogether. Ford says there are no safety concerns, but it decided to stop selling the $800 home charging stations at the end of February until it figures out the problem. Mach-E owners can still charge their electric Mustangs using 120V or 240V outlets at home, or at public charging stations. (Owners who run into any issues can call Ford at (800) 392-3673.) Ford’s 48-amp Level 2 charger (officially called the Ford Connected Charge Station) is able to put around 28 miles of range back into the Mustang Mach-E battery pack per hour, about eight miles more per hour than you’d get plugging into a 240V outlet. While some automakers that sell electric vehicles sell these chargers (which also require an installation process), there’s a growing list of third-party options. According to the Automotive...
BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots trip to Los Angeles happens to coincide with a stay-at-home order going into effect in the area, due to a surge in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. It seems, though, that the Patriots won’t have to scramble for either of their games in Inglewood. As of Sunday, the NFL said that there’s been no indication that Los Angeles county will ban contact sports, a move which Santa Clara county made recently, thus forcing the San Francisco 49ers to relocate to Arizona. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Rams and Chargers will be allowed to play and practice as scheduled “for the foreseeable future.” The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin also received comment from an NFL spokesman, which noted “there’s nothing to report” with regard to the two L.A. teams being impacted by the order. The planned shutdown is large in scale. CBS Los Angeles noted that the order — which will be active through at least Dec. 28 — “will result in the closure of personal care services such as nail and hair salons and barbershops, as...
It’s family first for Philip Rivers and his wife, Tiffany. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback and his high school sweetheart — who have been married for 19 years — are the parents of nine children, but they don’t have a number on how many kids could be added to their brood. “I think really, it was just whatever God’s will was,” Rivers told the Indy Star in September. “We were just open. Certainly didn’t have a number on it. Still don’t.” With Rivers’ football journey taking him to a new team this year, following 16 seasons with the Chargers, the 38-year-old quarterback is grateful to lean on “the heart” of his family through it all. In the COVID-19 era, the home field advantage in the NFL isn’t what it used to be. So when the Raiders open the second half of the season Sunday against the Denver Broncos with the first of five games in the second half of the season at home, that may or may not be a good thing. The Raiders are 1-2 at Allegiant Stadium and 4-1 on the road. Denver, one of their AFC West rivals, is 2-2 on the road and 1-2 at home. When Tennessee lost a home game to Indianapolis Thursday night, it dropped home teams to 65-68-1 on the season, the lowest percentage in the last 19 years. From the time the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 2002, home teams have won 57 percent of the time. “This whole experience is like the twilight zone,” Raiders coach Jon Gruden said Friday in a video conference. “Everything’s different, from the way we travel, the way we operate. It’s certainly different playing a home game. I don’t know what the statistics are —...

(CBS Los Angeles) — The Kansas City Chiefs seemed to continue the 2019 season in Week 1 to 2020. The defending Super Bowl Champions, led by Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, handled a strong Houston Texans team en route to a 34-20 win at home. It was their 10th straight win dating back to the second half of last season. The Texans jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the notoriously slow-starting Chiefs. But Kansas City soon showed the benefit of continuity in this strange season. With the same coaching and system and similar player personnel in place, finally got going late in the first quarter with beginning of its first scoring drive. They would go on to score 31 unanswered points. By the time Houston scored again in the fourth quarter, the game was already well out of reach. Mahomes finished off the evening going an efficient 24-32 for 211 yards and three touchdowns. Sammy Watkins hauled in one of them; Travis Kelce added another. Rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a new addition who seems to have improved the running game,...
When the Rams and Chargers abandoned their respective cities to relocate to Los Angeles in 2016, they did so without new stadiums to move into. The rush to get out of St. Louis and San Diego, respectively, was apparently more pressing than waiting for the construction of venues fitting for NFL franchises. The Rams spent the past four years playing at 74-year-old Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, while the Chargers for the past three years were even worse off, competing at the limited capacity Dignity Health Sports Park. Both Los Angeles teams will enjoy nicer digs in 2020 as they begin play at their shared SoFi Stadium, which officially opens for football this weekend. Filling a gas tank is faster than charging a battery, but this simple comparison misses an important point: Charging an electric vehicle at home is extremely convenient. You can’t install a gas pump inside your garage. Most onboard chargers can accept electrons as fast as a home charger can dish them out. Rapid acceptance is more important when charging at high voltage public superchargers. Level One home charging stations run on 120 volts. Level Twos need 240. All EVs come with a Level...
