A crowd of Testarossa fans and employees gathered Sept. 29 to witness a tradition that marks a critical milestone in the lifecycle of any winery: a wrap on the growing season. It’s been a wild, heat-driven and drought-stricken year, so this year’s Blessing of the Grapes marked one of the earliest ends to harvest ever in Testarossa’s 25-year history. Last year’s blessing by Jesuit priests, from whom Testarossa leases the winery property in downtown Los Gatos, occurred on Oct. 19. Last week, bins filled with glorious golden bunches of chardonnay sat on the Testarossa crush pad, awaiting blessing. Winemaker Bill Brosseau grabbed a handful of the clusters of Cobb clone Chardonnay from Fogstone Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The clusters were inundated by thirsty honeybees, camouflaged nicely by the brown skins of the raisined grapes. Tightfisted and about 4 inches long, they looked like miniature corncobs. “We’re still waiting on chardonnay from La Rinconada and Rincon tomorrow, and then we’re done. All the pinot noir came in before the middle of the month,” Brosseau said. The first fruit in...
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — With the snow-covered Andes shining in the background, several dozen cowboys in woolen ponchos and families on wooden horse carts lined up Saturday to receive a priest’s blessing in the huge esplanade in front of the National Sanctuary of Maipú. “I come every year to fulfill a vow,” said Joshua Contreras, 30, riding a shiny black horse, Lola, and wearing the traditional kit of the Chilean “huaso,” or horseman, including extra long spurs and intricately carved, closed wooden stirrups. The gigantic sanctuary on the outskirts of Santiago was built in the 1970s on the location of a church erected to celebrated Chile’s victory in its war of independence in the early 1800s. It’s dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen, or Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the country’s patron, whose feast day is July 16. Many horse carts were decked in Chilean and Vatican flags. Several of the riders like Contreras belonged to a group called Cuasimodo, who traditionally bring Communion to the sick and homebound on their horses on a Sunday in April....
At the violent, historically disgraceful conclusion of Donald Trump’s presidency, it was still inevitable that Republicans would soon crawl back to him, and beg and compete for his endorsements in the critical 2022 elections. But even in today’s increasingly extreme GOP—where a twice-impeached, one-term president who led a failed coup is the gold standard of endorsements—there is one person whose emergence as a sought-after 2022 endorser has surprised even some of the most hardened and cynical Republican operatives. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), the COVID vaccine-hating, conspiracy theory-spewing freshman congresswoman who came to national prominence as a far-right QAnon promoter is increasingly in demand. A fact due in large part to her direct line to former President Trump and her vast network of small grassroots donors. According to four longtime Republican operatives working at senior levels on a variety of competitive GOP primaries across the nation, Greene has been frequently discussed not only as a welcome endorsement in competitive 2022 Republican House and Senate primaries. Her official seal of approval is also discussed as one that should be actively...

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — In her dreams, Eveline Zagre believes her two sets of twins share premonitions and make demands of her — buy a chicken, beg for money. “Their spirits will enter your dreams and let you know what they want and then you have to get it for them,” she said. Despite the burden of following their dream directives, Zagre considers herself doubly blessed. The 30-year-old mother of five is raising 3-year-old twin girls and 13-year-old twin boys in Burkina Faso – one of the West African countries where twins are revered for having special powers, like healing the sick, warding off danger, bringing financial prosperity and predicting the future. The majority-Muslim country, with its strong cultural embrace of the supernatural, regards twins as the children of spirits, and the mothers of twins as specially picked to bear them. This deeply rooted perception stems from the days people could not scientifically explain how twins were conceived. In other parts of West Africa, twins are seen as a curse. “People were afraid of twins because...

Last week, the Minnesota Timberwolves fired GM Gersson Rosas. It was the latest move to showcase the franchise’s instability, but could it be a blessing in disguise? The Minnesota Timberwolves are in a state of disarray. This is not particularly newsworthy on its own since that has been the standard state of the franchise since its inception. But last Thursday, the franchise took a dramatic step by firing general manager Gersson Rosas. While the firing itself made sense, considering the team’s 42-94 record during his tenure, with the new season right around the corner, the timing made it inexplicable. At least until further reports emerged. These stated that Rosas had created a deeply unpleasant work environment in addition to having an affair with a coworker. Regardless of whether or not the Wolves were happy to have an excuse to fire him, his management style coupled with his “inappropriate relationship” forced the team’s hand. However, for a franchise with little to celebrate over the course of its 32-year history, the firing of Rosas is an opportunity, a chance to enter a...

PORTSMOUTH — Seeing little ones’ faces with full smiles while they are doing a project for their community is a treasure. This year Clay Preschool classes did a project but had to take more responsibility for the project themselves than they normally would have because of COVID. “Our Spring Service Project ran the whole month of March. We noticed the Blessing Boxes had been empty throughout the county, and we wanted to be a blessing to our community,” Christy Shafer, preschool teacher/director, said, However, due to COVID, things were not done the way they would have liked them to be. Shafer and Davida Grant sent letters that went out to the preschool parents to fill the blessing boxes with their child as the preschool Spring Service Project. It explained what they were doing and how students should be with their parents purchasing the items and taking them to the Blessing Boxes. She said that they then snapped a photo of their child, either filling their boxes or putting the items in the Blessing Boxes. This was their way of giving...
ROME — Pope Francis urged his coronavirus-weary flock to not lose hope even through the continued “dark months” of the pandemic as he celebrated a scaled-back Easter vigil service in St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday. Due to social-distancing norms, only about 200 masked people were allowed to attend the service, which marks the period between Christ’s crucifixion and his joyous resurrection on Easter Sunday.  For the second year in a row, the Vatican cut out the traditional sacrament of baptism for a handful of adults to limit the chance of contagion. Usually, a long, late-night ritual, this year’s vigil service also started earlier than usual to respect Italy’s 10 p.m. COVID-19 curfew. But the service began in the dramatic way it always does, with the pope lighting a single candle in the darkened basilica and then sharing its flame with others until the pews slowly begin to twinkle and the basilica’s lights are turned on. In his homily, Francis said Easter offers a message of hope and new starts.  “In these dark months of the pandemic, let us listen...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis is skipping New Year’s ceremonies due to what the Vatican says is a painful back condition, a spokesman said Thursday. Matteo Bruni said Francis is suffering from “painful sciatica” and won’t preside at a year-end prayer service Thursday evening in St. Peter’s Basilica. The pope also won’t celebrate Mass on New Year’s Day in the basilica for the same reason. Francis has suffered from the problem in the past. A 7-year-old boy from Houston used his birthday money to help feed the homeless on Thanksgiving. Dylan Virtudazo's birthday party was canceled in August due to the coronavirus pandemic, so he received some cash instead. Initially unsure how to spend it, he came up with the idea when his teachers asked students about their plans for Thanksgiving, as local news outlet KHOU-11 first reported. "He's always been like that," Dylan's mother, Nancy Virtudazo, told Fox News. Dylan Virtudazo's "blessing bags" (Credit: Nancy Virtudazo) She brought up a time in August when Houston was under a hurricane watch and her son showed her a handful of coins, saying he wanted to give them to the homeless for hurricane supplies after overhearing his parents talk about the supplies they needed for hurricane prep. PORTLAND SWEEPING HOMELESS CAMPS During trips to the grocery store, Dylan always makes sure that if he gets candy, his brothers and sisters do, too, even if they don't come to the store. That selfless attitude is what led Dylan to use his birthday money to create "blessing bags" for...
Le’Veon Bell joining the Kansas City Chiefs in the middle of the season piqued interest in the NFL world with many wondering how he would be used in their crowded offense. At the same time, rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was on a tear in his first few games. Bell said it was the rookie’s fast start to the season that led him to ask the former LSU standout if he could have his blessing to join the Chiefs. RAIDERS FACE 'DAUNTING TASK' OF PLAYING CHIEFS WHILE PREPARING WITH PLAYERS ON COVID LIST, COACH SAYS “We had conversations before I even got here,” Bell told reporters Friday, according to Arrowhead Pride. “So once I kind of got the clearance with Clyde — that he was going to be OK with everything, going to be all right — that’s when I think I started getting more engaged with the coaches. Like, ‘Let me see a little more depth.’” The New York Jets cut Bell after more than one year on the team. He was a high-profile signing after a year away...
In a weird, twisted way, Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle’s injuries — ones that will likely keep them out for the remainder of the season — are good news for the 49ers. As I wrote yesterday, the Niners, at 4-4, were stuck in football purgatory. The Niners were not bad enough to precipitate meaningful year-over-year change — the kind that was looking increasingly necessary at quarterback — but they weren’t good enough to make this season worth anything more than an outside chance at the playoffs and a quick Wild Card Round exit if they were to have made it. It was going to be tough to fully explain what went wrong. How do you break down the strange confluence of injuries and regression, bad decisions and bad vibes that had, up until Monday, defined the Niners’ post-Super Bowl hangover year? But with Garoppolo’s aggravated high-ankle sprain and Kittle’s broken foot, there’s clarity. They’re no longer in football purgatory. Now, they’re just straight bad. Yes, the second half of this 49ers season is going to stink more...
A priest could not stop laughing when a little girl saw him raise his hand to bless her - and mistakenly thought he wanted her to high-five him. After reciting 'our father' and making the sign of the cross, the priest held his hand up over her head, but to his surprise, the five-year-old girl nonchalantly reached up and gave his hand a celebratory tap. Charming footage shows the priest fight back laughter, covering his mouth with his hand as he tries to continue.  'Give me a high five, father': A little girl high-fived a priest as he was trying to give her a blessing. The priest struggled to contain his laughter after the adorable incident The person behind the camera can also be heard laughing, while the woman behind the girl - possibly her mother - shakes her head in disbelief as she tries to hold the girl's arm. The priest manages to compose himself briefly and continues with the blessing, interrupted occasionally with small bursts of laughter.  RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Priest...

By Sergio Goncalves and Miguel Pereira LISBON (Reuters) - Portugal's bicycle makers feared for their future when the coronavirus pandemic forced them in March to shut for two months but 2020 now looks set to be a bumper year as people shun public transport and opt for healthier ways of getting around. Portugal, Europe's largest manufacturer of bicycles, had to shut its nearly 40 factories and put their 8,000-strong workforce on furlough to help curb the spread of COVID-19, but is now struggling to keep up with booming global demand. "When we closed on March 13, we thought it would be a catastrophe, we were scared," said Bruno Salgado, executive board member of RTE Bikes, which owns Europe's largest bike factory, in the city of Gaia, in northern Portugal. "But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for us," said Salgado, standing between two busy production lines at the factory, which produced 1.1 million bicycles last year. Worldwide, people have been trying to avoid crowded trains and buses during the pandemic, preferring to cycle, walk or jog to...
MANILA (Reuters) - Coronavirus-wary animal owners in the Philippines had their pets blessed via a drive-through ceremony on Sunday to mark World Animal Day and the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. From a safe distance inside their owners' cars, cats, dogs, and birds were sprinkled with holy water by a Catholic priest in Manila, as the nation's coronavirus cases continued to surge. The Philippines has recorded a total of 322,497 coronavirus infections, the highest in Southeast Asia. Organisers and participants said this year's unusual way of blessing pets for World Animal Day, celebrated worldwide to recognise animal rights and welfare, ensured social distancing. "We have to adapt to the new normal and the pandemic should never stop us from paying tribute to the furry animals that we have," said Ritchie Pascual, one of the event organisers. For dog-owner Arlene Pedron, having her pet blessed is "very important...because we really feel like our pet is part of our family". "We also want the best for his health," Pedron said, while waiting in line with her...

For Minnesota Vikings linebacker Cameron Smith, testing positive for COVID-19 turned into a “blessing.” Smith, a 2019 fifth-round pick (162nd overall), announced Saturday that he will miss the 2020 NFL season because of a congenital heart condition that came to his attention after testing positive for the coronavirus. The 23-year-old will have to undergo open-heart surgery to fix a bicuspid aortic valve, a procedure he didn’t know he needed until he underwent further testing because of his positive test for the virus. “Although this will unfortunately end my 2020 season, it is really a blessing that we found this as my heart is severely enlarged and wouldn’t have lasted much longer,” Smith wrote in an Instagram post. He added that he “didn’t think twice” about having the surgery because it will allow him to continue playing football once he’s healed. Cameron SmithGetty Images “By no means am I ready to be done playing football, there is still so much more I want to accomplish on the field,” Smith wrote. “Im going to attack this like everything else I have in...
