In a new essay for "National Grief Awareness Day" on Tuesday, Presley opens up about the loss of her son, Benjamin Keough, 27, who died by suicide in 2020."My and my three daughters' lives as we knew it were completely detonated and destroyed by his death. We live in this every. Single. Day," she writes. "Grief is something you will have to carry with you for the rest of your life, in spite of what certain people or our culture wants us to believe. You do not 'get over it,' you do not 'move on,' period." Presley describes grief as "incredibly lonely," writing that only "a handful" of people typically stay in contact to offer ongoing support to a friend or family member who has experienced a difficult loss."Unfortunately, that is a cold hard truth for most. So, if you know someone who lost a loved one, regardless of how long it's been, please call them to see how they are doing. Go visit them. They will really really appreciate it,...

The recent suicides of the mayor of Hyattsville, Maryland, and a former Miss USA in New York can affect even people who didn’t know them well. In the immediate aftermath of a suicide, there is a higher risk of other suicides among people who might need support, according to a Northern Virginia psychiatrist. “And also in a more long-term perspective, survivors of suicide loss are at higher risk for other mental health challenges, whether that may be post-traumatic stress, depression or even a higher risk of suicide much later on in life,” said Dr. Ross Goodwin, a psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente in Burke, Virginia. “It’s important to recognize that many different people with relationships to the person who died of suicide — or maybe people who may not have had a direct relationship with that person but who is still exposed to the suicide — is considered a survivor of suicide loss,” Goodwin said, “and someone who is perhaps at higher risk in the aftermath of suicide and someone who’s in need of contact or support after a suicide.” Signs...
Jemal Countess/Getty Images A conservative media critic published a column on Friday despicably accusing Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) of “milking” his son’s suicide. Raskin’s son, Tommy Raskin, took his own life on Dec. 31 following a battle with depression. The congressman has been one of the Democratic leaders seeking answers following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as he was the lead impeachment manager in former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate and now sits on the House select committee investigating the riot. In a column for Newsbusters, which is the Media Research Center’s blog documenting liberal media bias, Tim Graham acknowledged that the suicide of a child “sounds like a terrible blow for any parent,” he presented the piece with the headline “Column: Radical Raskin’s ‘Unthinkable’ Suicide Milking.” Yes, that is a real headline that made it past editor’s and was actually published. Graham quoted an interview Raskin told MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow on Jan. 4, “I fault myself for not talking about suicide to Tommy. And I liken not talking to a depressed person...

The US has suffered the worst loss of life in Afghanistan in a decade after two suspected suicide bombers killed at least 13 US troops near the Kabul airport Thursday. One blast detonated at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport, where US troops were screening Afghans for evacuation following the Taliban's takeover of most of the Central Asian country on August 14. The other blast took place at the nearby Baron Hotel, where thousands including Afghans, Britons and Americans were told to gather in recent days before heading to the airport for evacuation.  As many as 60 people are feared dead by Afghan estimates. Days after the loss of their son, U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md, and wife Sarah Bloom Raskin, decided to issue a public statement about their son’s life — and 25-year-old Tommy Raskin’s suicide. Kate Farinholt, executive director of the National Alliance for Mental Illness of Maryland, said the family’s decision to go public with the cause of their son’s death sent a powerful message. Farinholt said it helps chip away at the stigma surrounding suicide and mental illnesses like depression. “Stigma leads to silence,” said Farinholt. “And silence about a suicide loss just leaves people feeling isolated. And as if they’re facing the tragedy by themselves.” But by issuing the statement, and explaining that their son Tommy — a bright, talented young man who suffered from depression — the Raskins opened the door to discussion and help. “When someone dies by suicide, and if the family has been public about it,” said Farinholt, “The aftermath opens up an immediate opportunity to talk about suicide as a public health issue. And that affects all of us.” Farinholt said one in five adults...
