McCarthy visited President Joe Biden’s White House soiree where France’s president and first lady were guests list. Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron were honored by the Bidens. Other guests included Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Stephen Colbert, and Jennifer Garner. The New York Times published a full guest list. Hunter Biden, whose laptop has been the subject of endless reporting and scandal, was also at the dinner. Given that McCarthy has pledged to probe the Biden family and the president’s son for corruption, many on the right again blew the whistle on McCarthy’s bid for House Speaker. Many asked why McCarthy would rub elbows with someone whose actions allegedly compromised the integrity of the country’s executive branch. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) tweeted, “Tonight Kevin McCarthy had dinner with Hunter Biden at a state dinner with Macron to rally support for more US aid to Ukraine. He should not be Speaker.” Tonight Kevin McCarthy had...

And we still strive to build a world that’s worthy of our highest hopes and of our future, knowing that we can always, always count on one another as allies and friends,” Biden said. He drew a laugh when he said “please...

A day before the full pomp of a state banquet, the Bidens ducked out of the White House for an informal dinner with the French president and his wife at a Washington restaurant.  They picked Fiola Mare, an Italian spot on the Georgetown waterfront, for the rendezvous. On Thursday night, President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte will be afforded the first state dinner of the Bidens' time at the White House - complete with 200 lobsters and Napa Valley wine. Macron is getting the full works, starting Wednesday with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, then discussing space cooperation with Vice President at NASA headquarters in Washington. On Thursday he heads to the White House for Oval Office talks and a joint press conference.  Compared with Macron's awkward relationship with President Donald Trump, the events offer a carefully choreographed display of transatlantic togetherness. Vice President Kamala Harris is returning to South Carolina this week to headline a fundraising dinner for Democrats in the state, which plays a key role in the presidential nominating process. State Democratic party officials announced Monday that Harris will be the keynote speaker at the Blue Palmetto Dinner, planned for Friday in Columbia. The dinner comes just days before South Carolina’s primary elections, where the contest for governor tops the statewide Democratic ballot. Five candidates are competing for their party’s nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, whose GOP challengers have failed to attract significant fundraising support. Just two hours before the dinner, Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls, including former U.S. Rep. Joe Cunningham and state Sen. Mia McLeod, are set to meet for their only primary debate. For months, South Carolina has already been playing host to a myriad of Republicans potentially setting themselves up for 2024 White House bids, including former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Some native South Carolina Republicans have also been testing the 2024 waters....
The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in an emerald gown custom-made by British fashion designer Jenny Packham for a glittering state dinner to finish off the fifth day of her Caribbean tour with Prince William. Kate, 40, donned a glitter tulle piece paired with priceless diamonds lent by the Queen for her and the duke's first visit to Jamaica. She also sported her Royal Family Order and the GCVO Star. The dress is believed to be a bespoke version of Ms Packham's £3,791 'Wonder Glitter Tulle Gown'. She finished off her look with matching emerald-and-diamond earrings and a bracelet loaned by Her Majesty for the special occasion. It is not the first time Kate has worn designs by the UK fashion label, which counts Angelina Jolie and Taylor Swift among its A-list fans. Last September she wore a dazzling gold number by the brand for the No Time to Die premiere.  Meanwhile, Prince William appeared suave in black tie as they arrived at a dinner thrown in their honour by the Governor General at King's House, his Kingston residence - the...
A Texas mom who invited the state's attorney general to dinner to learn about her transgender son says she is now being probed by the state for child abuse after seeking medical help with the youngster's transition.   Mother-of-two Amber Briggle, who has a transgender son called Max, 14, says her family is one of at least five families that are currently under investigation in wake of Abbott's February ruling targeting children who've received treatments including puberty blockers.  She says she was contacted by child protective services on February 28, with an investigator saying they'd be arriving at her home within 30 minutes. Briggle says she managed to meet with the social worker at her office, and schedule a visit to her home for March 3, which she says resulted in social workers compliment her and her husband's parenting.  Briggle, who has blogged prolifically about Max's transition, has said she supports the kind of hormone treatment Governor Greg Abbott wants to ban. She hasn't stipulated whether Max himself has undergone the treatment, but previously spoke of paying to change the gender...
Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom left for a Mexico vacation with his family Monday, roughly one week after extending California’s COVID-19 state of emergency. Newsom left along with his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and their children, and will not return to California until Nov. 28. Newsom signed an executive order on Nov. 15 extending the COVID-19 emergency rules he initially put into place in March of 2020. The rules are now set to expire in March of 2022, unless they are extended once again. BREAKING: @GavinNewsom has left the state to join @JenSiebelNewsom and their children in Mexico. NAPA (AP) — On a single day last November, two events helped set the course for just the second recall election against a governor in California history: Gov. Gavin Newsom dined with 11 friends and lobbyists at one of the country’s most expensive restaurants as he pleaded with Californians to stay home, while those looking to kick him out of office won four more months to qualify for the ballot. Photos of the maskless dinner showed the Democratic governor going against what he had been urging for months to combat the coronavirus: don’t gather in groups, keep your distance, wear a mask. That it was happening at the French Laundry — where the cheapest meal is $350 — fueled the idea Newsom was out of touch. The dinner turned up the heat on the fledgling recall, and the extra time allowed it to reach full boil. With less than two weeks before the NBA Draft, the Warriors are putting the final touches on their draft board before getting set to use picks No. 7 and 14. This week, they’ve held workouts with several prospects who figure to be selected in the lottery. Chances are, one or two of the players who have passed through Chase Center could end up being drafted by Golden State later this month. Among likely first-round picks, the Warriors have worked out Florida’s Tre Mann, G League Ignite’s Isaiah Todd, LSU’s Cameron Thomas, Arkansas’ Moses Moody, Duke’s Jalen Johnson, Texas’ Kai Jones and Baylor’s Davion Mitchell. On Friday, Tennessee’s Keon Johnson, Oregon’s Chris Duarte, Gonzaga’s Corey Kispert, Virginia’s Trey Murphy III and Stanford’s Ziaire Williams will work out in front of the Warriors brass. That’s most of the players expected to be selected in Golden State’s range. One notable exception, NBL standout Josh Giddey, has shut down pre-draft workouts going forward. The Warriors, however, had already evaluated Giddey in person before his decision. At 6-foot-8, Giddey provides a...

Mayor Sam Liccardo, of San Jose, Calif., apologized Tuesday for spending Thanksgiving with his family in apparent violation of state coronavirus rules and said he will “commit do better.” NBC Bay Area first broke the news of Liccardo’s Thanksgiving Day visit to his parent’s home in Saratoga – about 15 miles southwest of San Jose. Liccardo’s press team told the station that the mayor was staying home for Thanksgiving but later said a spokesperson had “misspoke” and that the mayor spent the holiday with his parents. San Jose, Calif., Mayor Sam Liccardo Liccardo said that that information was “inaccurate, and asked his press team to correct the record, “by clarifying that I was at my parent’s home.” In a separate statement, Liccardo said that eight of his family members representing five households were in attendance, but sat around three distanced tables on the back patio and wore masks when not eating. He added that many other family members who would have joined them for Thanksgiving in the past, “stayed home out of caution.” San Jose fell under...
Andrew Cuomo was on Monday forced to cancel his Thanksgiving plans hours after saying his 89-year-old mom and and two daughters were coming to dinner.  The New York governor had told WAMC: 'My mom is going to come up and two of my girls is the current plan. But the plans change. But that's my plan.' His comments sparked a fierce backlash online with Twitter users, including Meghan McCain, noting Cuomo had urged others to stay home over the holidays.  The Democrat's office later confirmed he had canceled those plans, saying the governor will now work 'given the current circumstances with COVID'. Senior adviser Rich Azzopardi said: 'As the Governor said, 'The story is my mom is going to come up and two of my girls is the current plan, but the plans change. That's my plan. I'm going to work — I've got a lot of work to do between now and Thanksgiving,' and given the current circumstances with COVID, he will have to work through Thanksgiving and will not be seeing them.' Azzopardi added: 'Don't tell his mom —...
EIGHT California lawmakers are facing a furious backlash after flying to Hawaii for a conference despite health officials warning against out-of-state travel amid a spike in coronavirus cases. The row has erupted as Governor Gavin Newsom continues to receive criticism for attending a birthday dinner at a fancy Michelin-starred French restaurant in Napa Valley. 5The four-day conference is at the $500-a-night Fairmont Kea Lani Hotel in Wailea, Maui Critics have blasted the decision by the politicians – who include at least seven California assembly members and one state senator – to fly to the luxury beachfront Fairmont Kea Lani Hotel resort in Maui for the meeting. The four-day conference comes amid a sharp rise in coronavirus cases across the US, and kicked off the same day that 94% of California’s population were put under the state's most restrictive purple COVID-19 tier. “This is ‘do as I say, not as I do’,” Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn, told the LA Times. “This is one of the reasons there is a complete disconnect between ordinary citizens in California...
On Monday Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California is hitting its 'emergency brake' and will shut down indoor activities for 94 percent of the state, as he apologized for attending a dinner party at a Michelin-starred restaurant earlier this month.  In a coronavirus press conference on Monday Newsom said the state's number of COVID-19 cases has doubled in the past week alone and 10,968 new cases were reported on Monday. Newsom announced 41 of California’s 58 counties will move into the state’s most restrictive purple COVID-19 reopening risk tier starting Tuesday, up from 13 counties last week.  Under the purple tier indoor operations for museums, houses of worship, gyms and restaurants are not allowed. Bars that don’t provide food, concert venues, schools, and theme parks are also closed. Counties going under the purple tier include Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Napa and Solano counties in the Bay Area as well as Los Angeles.  Newsom said this is the fastest rate of rising cases since the start of the pandemic and there are 1,029,235 cases, 18,263 deaths and a positivity rate of 4.6 percent...
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There’s new warnings about the holiday season as the second wave of the coronavirus continues spreading. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday that Thanksgiving should include immediate family only. Cases are increasing and so are the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19. Outbreaks in New Jersey schools now involve 83 students and teachers. While the governor says that’s relatively low, he says Thanksgiving needs to look different this year. “Start planning your holidays now and please plan for a smaller table this year,” Murphy said. Murphy said holiday celebrations should be scaled back this year and held outside, if possible, because the coronavirus continues to increase and spread across the state “We do not want a Thanksgiving dinner to turn tragic because someone unwittingly exposed a large number of their family members to the coronavirus,” Murphy said. “We urge you to not gather around the dining room table with anyone outside your immediate household.” New Jersey has had three straight days with more than 900 cases as the positivity rate is now over 4%. Ocean County...
