There is growing concern that the United States may have lost its chance to contain the monkeypox virus, as the nation has been slow to vaccinate those most at risk on a broader scale. “I think we’re going to have to live with it until they vaccinate every high-risk person,” Dr. Robert Murphy, executive director of the Havey Institute for Global Health at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said this week. Vaccinating against monkeypox has been a part of the Biden administration’s response to the global outbreak since the nation identified its first case of the disease in May, but supplies have been limited, even as demand for protection from the virus surges. At first, officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that vaccines for monkeypox were being released from the Strategic National Stockpile and offered to the “high-risk” contacts of monkeypox patients, as well as the health-care workers treating them. Vaccinating someone already exposed to monkeypox to help prevent illness is called post-exposure prophylaxis or a ring vaccination strategy. Vaccinating a patient’s...

The ring, found on the Island of Man in December, is in the style of a Stuart Period mourning ring and bears the initials 'JD.' It was likely crafted in 1650s as a memento after the death of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, whose family ruled the island for centuries. Lord Stanley, who signed his letters 'J. Derby,' was a supporter of King Charles I and was beheaded by Oliver Cromwell's forces after Charles' defeat.   The ornate gold-and-crystal ring was found on the Isle of Man by a metal detectorist in December. The first time it occurred to Jim O’Brien that maybe this beat would be a little different was just past 8:15 on the evening of Dec. 7, 1970. O’Brien was 28 years old, about a year into a nine-year stint as a reporter and columnist for The Post. He’d covered the Knicks’ championship run seven months earlier. That was something. “But this,” he recalls, “was something else.” The beat was boxing — specifically, Muhammad Ali, who on this night would be fighting Oscar Bonavena in his second bout back after a 3 ½-year absence from the sport due to his refusal to submit to the draft. It was also presumed to be the final tuneup for what everyone knew would soon be a shot at Joe Frazier, the reigning and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Ali’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, knew O’Brien from when the reporter had worked at the old Miami News, and had spent some time together at that city’s famed Fifth Street Gym. He’d invited O’Brien to stay in his room at the Loews Motor Inn on...

A 2,000-year-old tiny gem seal cut of dark brown jasper that depicts the face of the Greek god Apollo has been discovered in Jerusalem's Western Wall. The oval-shaped piece is just 13 mm long and 11 mm wide and was used as a stamp for personal signatures on contracts, letters and other goods - but experts believe it was worn as jewelry. Although such seals were very common, this one is unique due to it being made of a precious stone in antiquity and bearing an engraving of a god not of the Jewish faith. The engraving shows a side profile of a face, with long hair flowing down Apollo's neck, a large nose and thick lips, along with a prominent chin. Archaeologist say it is rare to find in image of another god in Jerusalem and suggests its owner was 'making use of the impact that Apollo's figure represents: light, purity, health and success.' It was one of the most notorious espionage scandals of the late 20th century and, perhaps, the largest so far in the troubled history of relations between Cuba and the United States. At dawn on September 12, 1998, 10 Cuban intelligence agents were detained by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as part of an operation against the Wasp Network, a ring of spies that the Fidel Castro government had infiltrated since beginning of the decade in South Florida. A judge released Anthony Cyntje, 22, of Passaic, without bail on drug possession and conspiracy charges. Authorities said he works at a correctional facility in Trenton. Long Island authorities Monday announced the takedown of a multimillion-dollar bicoastal drug trafficking ring and the arrest of five men — including a New Jersey correction officer. “The magnitude of this drug distribution ring is enormous,” Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini said in a statement. “Not only did this organization continue their illicit operation during the coronavirus pandemic, they also exploited the limited availability of certain narcotics during the health crisis to generate even greater profits off their sales.” Anthony Cyntje, 22, of Passaic, was arraigned Sunday on one count each of criminal possession of a controlled substance and conspiracy and was released without bail. He works as a correction officer in Trenton, according to officials. Investigators executed search warrants at six locations on June 27 and seized 18 kilos of cocaine and heroin, $1.5 million in cash, approximately 4,000 oxycodone pills, nine firearms and drug paraphernalia, according to the Suffolk County DA. The cocaine has a street value of $1.6 million and the heroin $520,000, officials said. Numerous luxury vehicles were also seized. Members of the ring obtained...
A Florida mom delivered her baby in a parking lot just steps away from a birthing center — in a stunning moment caught on video. Susan Anderson and her husband Joseph Anderson were in front of Natural BirthWorks center in Margate on June 19 when their baby girl, Julia, decided she just couldn’t wait any longer to meet the world. “During the car ride to the birth center, I turned to my husband, and I was like, ‘I need to push!” Susan told Local 10. “I didn’t think I wouldn’t make it into the building.” And she didn’t. The Ring video shows Susan screaming and hunched over with her midwife, Sandra Lovaina, crouched behind her — ready to catch the baby as it slid out of the side of her shorts. “By the time we got to the first step, the head was coming,” Lovaina recalled, who was prepared and wearing gloves and a mask. Two police officers are also seen in the video keeping their distance. “She’s OK,” Lovaina told the cops. “I’m the midwife. She’s here to have...
