As the most notorious boss of the Chicago Mafia since Al Capone, Sam Giancana controlled a criminal empire stretching across America. He had an army of thugs to call on — but for two days in November 1963, he asked for help from his little brother, Pepe. He was only a humble, illegal bookie in the Giancana empire, but Sam needed someone to chauffeur him around while the mobsters who usually did so were out of town. As Pepe later confided to family, those men had gone to Dallas to do a job for Giancana — one that would become a seminal moment of the 20th century. From conversations overheard at his brother’s mansion in Oak Park outside Chicago, Pepe worked out that their task was to help Lee Harvey Oswald assassinate John F Kennedy, then ensure that Oswald did not live to talk. Since then, millions of words have been written about the killing of JFK: claims that the Mafia wanted revenge for his war on organised crime have vied with counter-theories that the president was killed by the...

America has a long, dark history of college hazing that has seen nearly 500 young students die in accidents while being initiated into Greek life.   The latest incident to shock the country was the October 2021 hazing of Danny Santulli, a 19-year-old who survived severe alcohol poisoning but is now blind and wheelchair-ridden as a result of it.  Danny's family's lawyer, David Bianchi, described it as the worst case of hazing injury the country has ever seen.  'You can't be more injured and still be alive,' he told DailyMail.com this week after filing a lawsuit against two of the frat boys involved. While Danny survived, more than 400 other kids have not.  There is no official database for hazing deaths or injuries thanks largely to the blanket of secrecy that is immediately thrown on incidents by universities, fraternities and sororities.  Danny Santulli, left, before he suffered brain damage after a night of forced alcohol at the University of Missouri, and right, recently. An Alabama man who says he was 'nearly killed' by Casey White has compared him to Charles Manson and Ted Bundy and said he fears that the convict will hunt him down after he escaped from jail. Charles Abernathy, 37, described White - who is currently on the run with prison guard and lover Vicky White - as 'hunter-like' and believes he will do whatever it takes to stay free.   'He will literally do anything and everything, including killing, including kidnapping, including killing animals and putting children in danger, to get what he wants,' Abernathy said to the New York Post. Abernathy added that White is 'of all people to escape, this dude is probably the worst level that you could possibly let escape. You've got like Manson and you've got friggin' like Bundy and all these crazy people. He is on that level for me.' White was on trial in 2019 for attempted murder and kidnapping in a 2015 crime spree when Abernathy testified. He added that he fears White will now 'hunt' him down while he remains on the...

He also faced bullying at school, with his nickname Meat Loaf a jab at his weight. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School and was dubbed Meat Loaf after treading on the foot of his football coach.  All this was followed by the devastating loss of his...

As President Joe Biden withdrew U.S. forces from the Afghanistan War, studies and appraisals of the devastating human costs of the American-led war on terror were once again trotted out, laying bare the failures, scandals, and atrocities of multiple Republican and Democratic administrations. In the last two decades, so-called war on terror has run up a bill upwards of $8 trillion—and, according to some of the more conservative estimates out there, has a body count of almost 1 million dead. The sprawling, brutal conflicts, first waged by the George W. Bush administration, also had other, insanely dumb side effects (blowback, if you will). Among these other consequences, the wars coarsened so much of American political and popular culture, perhaps irrevocably, and made the country’s conspiracy theories and paranoia dramatically worse. Look no further than the most influential far-right conspiracy theories that flourished throughout the Trump era and continue to flourish during the Biden years. “Among the things that I think really stands out about QAnon is its relationship to Guantanamo Bay, and how it is openly fantasizing about sending its...
HUMBOLDT PARK — A family is raising money for funeral expenses following the shooting death of a Chicago man Wednesday morning.  Travell Miller-Gilmore was stuck in traffic in the 3000 block of West Chicago Avenue while taking his 7-year-old daughter to school Wednesday, police said. At 7:33 a.m., an unknown male left another vehicle and shot Miller-Gilmore, 33, several times, police said. The man fled in his vehicle and is still at large.  Miller-Gilmore was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family has started two GoFundMe campaigns to pay for funeral costs. One had raised nearly $7,500 and another nearly $600. On GoFundMe, Miller-Gilmore was described as a “fun and joyful soul who was passionate about life and lived it to the fullest. He was a loving father that his first priority was always his two [daughters], Norielle and Esther.” The second GoFundMe also details the crime, saying Miller used his body to shield his young daughter.  Those interested in supporting the GoFundMe campaigns for Miller-Gilmore can find them both here and here.

"These two events are fundamentally different in nature, scope and consequences," Burlingame wrote. BEIRUT (AP) — Syria’s 10-year-long civil war has killed or wounded almost 12,000 children and left millions out of school in what could have repercussions for years to come in the country, the U.N. children’s agency said Wednesday. The grim statistics were released in a UNICEF report ahead of the 10th anniversary of Syria’s conflict that began in mid-March 2011. The war has killed nearly half a million people, wounded more than a million and displaced half the country’s population, including more than 5 million as refugees. THE Federal Aviation Administration is expected on Wednesday to clear Boeing’s 737 Max to fly again after grounding the jet for nearly two years due to a pair of crashes that killed 346 people. Agency Administrator Steve Dickson said last week the FAA was in the final stages of reviewing changes to the Max that would make it safe to return to the skies. 2The plane is expected to be clearedCredit: AP:Associated Press "I will lift the grounding order only after our safety experts are satisfied that the aircraft meets certification standards," he said in a statement. The move would come after numerous congressional hearings on the crashes that led to criticism of the FAA for lax oversight and Boeing for rushing to implement a new software system that put profits over safety and ultimately led to the firing of its CEO.
