For all of President Joe Biden’s boasting about the deficit reduction that has occurred on his watch, his administration and its allies in Congress are pushing dramatic increases in government spending, even as inflation continues to climb. “We’re on track to cut the federal deficit by another — another — $1.5 trillion by the end of this fiscal year, the biggest decline in a single year ever in American history,” Biden bragged from the White House last month. The falling deficit had become a feature of Biden’s economic messaging by this spring, as concerns about the skyrocketing cost of living were beginning to translate into serious doubts, even among some Democrats, about the administration’s ability to manage the economy. Biden presented his deficit reduction as an answer to critics on the Left and Right who had blamed the White House’s spending for driving up prices. But Biden’s budget claims were misleading at best. And Democratic appropriators on Capitol Hill are quietly gearing up to spend even more in fiscal year 2023, even though many of their party’s top economists blame...
A girl's injuries from impaling herself on a toy were so 'unbelievable' doctors thought she was a victim of child abuse. The unidentified three-year-old, from Germany, slipped while jumping about on the sofa and landed on the leg of an upturned miniature ironing board — which went up her backside. It went 7.8in (20cm) inside of her and her shocked parents pulled it out, causing her to start gushing with blood. After taking an ambulance to hospital, she was rushed to an emergency department where doctors could not believe her parents' story. They brought along the toy, which was bloody and had a small amount of 'tissue' on it. She was suffering severe stomach pains but had stopped bleeding.  Child services were called because of how implausible her injuries were — but other than the damage to her anus, there was nothing else to suggest that her parents had been abusive.  Doctors in Stuttgart suspected the rod had ruptured her bowel — but nothing major cropped up in an ultrasound. Vladimir Putin has been advised by doctors not to make any 'lengthy' public appearances after he fell ill amid discussions with his military chiefs, a Kremlin insider has claimed.  The Russian President felt 'a sharp sickness, weakness and dizziness', while getting up from his desk following a recent video conference with advisers and military leaders, Telegram channel General SVR reported yesterday. 'The President needed urgent medical assistance,' claimed the channel which purports to have sources in the Kremlin and has made repeated claims over Putin's alleged medical problems, including cancer and Parkinson's disease. The claims are impossible to verify, but the theory that the despot is struggling with a litany of health issues is gaining currency in the West. Myriad photos and videos have emerged in recent weeks in which the Russian leader appears bloated and uncomfortable, while other clips have shown him experiencing seemingly uncontrollable leg tremors and walking with poor co-ordination.  The channel also cited the 'dizziness' incident to explain an abrupt announcement this week that Putin's annual 'Direct Line' live broadcast - a marathon Q&A when he answers...

Still, fringe candidates are luring GOP voters and winning key races. The Republican Party’s radical right flank is making inroads among voters and winning key primaries east of the Mississippi. But out West, among the five states that held their 2022 primary elections on May 17, a string of GOP candidates for office who deny the 2020’s presidential election results and have embraced various conspiracies were rejected by Republicans who voted for more mainstream conservatives. This article was produced by Voting Booth, a project of the Independent Media Institute. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Mastriano, an election denier and white nationalist, won the GOP’s nomination for governor. He received 587,772 votes, which was 43.96 percent of the vote in a low turnout primary. One-quarter of Pennsylvania’s 9 million registered voters cast ballots. In Idaho, by contrast, Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin, who also claimed Joe Biden’s election was illegitimate and has campaigned at white supremacist rallies, according to the Western States Center, an Oregon-based group that monitors the far right, lost her bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination to incumbent Gov. Jimmy Kimmel went after Donald Trump on Thursday for praising Vladimir Putin as Russia continued to invade Ukraine. “You know, it’s hard to do a comedy show when there’s a war going on, but we are here while more than 6,000 miles away, women and children are fleeing Ukraine,” Kimmel said on Thursday night. “Men aged 18 to 60 are required to stay and fight as Russian forces continue their unprovoked attack — an attack that has been received here in the United States, like, I don’t remember anything like this, in that some of us seem OK with it. You know, typically we would band together in a situation like this. We’d be united, but that was before the great divider chopped us in half.” Kimmel was referring to Trump’s praise of Putin this week, which he kept going even after Russian military forces invaded Ukraine on Wednesday.
