The temperature in Singapore has reached 86 degrees and is still climbing, while humidity has been at 75 percent. According to a piece by the New York Times, fourteen volunteers, six climate researchers, and a mobile biometeorological cart named “Smarty” set off for a “heat walk” in Singapore’s downtown area. The volunteers carried devices to measure their heart rates and the temperature of their skin. Source: Bloomberg Quicktake: Originals/Youtube The lead researcher, Winston Chow, and his team are a part of Cooling Singapore which is a multi-institutional project first launched in 2017 thanks to funding from the government. The goal of the project is to build a computer model or “digital urban climate twin” of the city, which will enable policymakers to analyze the effectiveness of multiple heat mitigation measures before sending money that way. Researchers hope that this is something that could be replicated around the world amid the growing climate crisis. “People have always wondered which is the critical component of climate that really affects your discomfort. Is it low wind speed? Is it high air...
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Whether it’s food or gas prices, daily goods and services cost a lot more. The Biden administration and the Federal Reserve insist that the economy is not in a recession. Government figures show the gross domestic product fell at an annual rate of 0.9% from April through June. This marks the second straight quarter the economy has contracted, falling 1.6% at the start of the year. Experts say this typically indicates a recession. Communities like Jackson, Mississippi, have been suffering with water contamination issues for quite some time, especially when it comes to lead found in drinking water. PFAS appear to be the latest contaminant wreaking havoc on our nation's water supply. A revealing investigation conducted by The Guardian revealed widespread water contamination issues in the U.S. that the Environmental Protection Agency has shockingly yet to detect. According to The Guardian, its sampling of water from nine communities saw elevated levels of “forever chemicals” known as PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) not seen in the 537 tests that state and federal agencies typically use. Of the tests conducted in nine cities, the outlet found that seven city samples showed higher PFAS levels when tested using the TOF (total organic fluorine) method, which allows for more “forever chemicals” to be identified. The EPA 537 method focuses on just 14 PFAS, though the agency has updated its standards to 537.1 to account for “more PFAS that have the potential to contaminate drinking water [that] have been identified or introduced as PFOA/PFOS alternatives in manufacturing,” bringing that total up to 30. The TOF method, which detects a marker found...
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) — With the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, some South Jersey Jewish families are quickly making last-minute changes to their Passover plans. People in the South Jersey community say they are hosting Seder outside because of the nice weather, while other families are planning to keep to traditions from before the pandemic. For Ellen Feist’s family, the first night of Passover represents her and her husband’s sides of the family gathering around one Seder table to share in each side’s traditions. The 2021 dumpster fire that followed an even worse 2020 has had a devastating effect on the craft beer world. Although far fewer breweries closed than were initially predicted, we may still see more brewery closings in the months ahead. But happily, it’s not all bad news. Many breweries transitioned to new ways of doing business, by increasing their outdoor space, for example, and changing how they get their brews to consumers. Some of those changes may be here to stay. Here are a few beer trends we’re likely to see this year. Direct to consumer During the pandemic, many breweries sold beer directly to their customers via curbside pickup or local shipping, or they began shipping throughout the state hoping to find new customers who didn’t have access to their beer under traditional distribution systems. It was a lifeline for many businesses. As bars have reopened and pandemic restrictions have eased, the more normal day-to-day business is slowly returning for most breweries. But few, if any, are going to give up what will likely become an additional revenue stream. Beer lovers throughout the state will continue to be...

The world of cinema has had several pairs of famous directors. Some of them have been brothers. We have the dardenne brothers, for instance. But in Hollywood cinema the best known and most emblematic are undoubtedly the coen brothers. Joel Coen and Ethan Coen helped shape the film landscape of the 1990s and 21st century with films like The Big Lebowski – 80%, Fargo, Voluntary Kidnapping – 94% and No Place for the Weak – 94%. That’s how it is. The Tragedy of Macbeth It will be the director’s first solo film. What we knew in 2019 is that Ethan had decided to take a hiatus to focus on the world of theater and other artistic interests. Now a regular collaborator of this duo revealed that the youngest of the directors simply did not want to make more films. The one...

But, as we've highlighted over the past couple weeks, the Colorado Avalanche have emerged as the best team in the NHL. Mike Coppola/Getty CNN officially announced a raft of new anchoring assignments in a Wednesday morning press release, confirming a number of leaked reports from the past week. Brian Stelter reported the full scope of changes as well. In an exclusive interview with Mediate, CEO Jeff Zucker expressed pride that these moves add to an already broad and diverse set of faces viewers see on CNN. New Day host Alisyn Camerota is moving to afternoons, where she will co-anchor a show with Victor Blackwell, who has spent much of the last decade anchoring New Day Weekends. Boris Sanchez will take Blackwell’s spot. Ana Cabrera is also moving from weekends to weekday afternoons, and she will be replaced by Jim Acosta, who will anchor his own weekend afternoon news show. Nearly all of these promotions are for people of color. In a conversation about CNN’s recent programming changes, I asked the CNN boss how much diversity figured into his decision-making process. “Yes, there’s a great deal of diversity, as you point out,” he noted, but not without clarifying a larger strategy at...
NISSAN is to continue making the Leaf and other cars in Britain despite threats to relocate because of Brexit. It even says the UK’s independence gives it a competitive advantage. 2Nissan will continue making the Leaf, pictured, in the UKCredit: handout The Japanese car giant had warned it would pull out of Sunderland but yesterday confirmed the U-turn over its plant there, which employs 6,000. Boris Johnson hailed it a “great vote of confidence” after the manufacturer pledged its long-term future to the UK thanks to his Brussels deal. Nissan’s chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta said the PM’s trade pact with the EU had prevented major disruption and dismissed checks and paperwork at the border as “peanuts”. His comments marked a radical departure from its previous warnings that leaving the EU threatened its UK operations. He told the BBC: “The Brexit deal is positive for Nissan. It has created a competitive environment for Sunderland, not just inside the UK but outside as well. "In certain conditions, our competitiveness is improved.” 2As well as the Leaf, it will now manufacture its...

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Last summer, CBS Los Angeles got a behind-the-scenes look as dancers from London’s Royal Ballet chose a special local dance troupe to participate in a free, 5-day workshop at The Music Center. “We still relish in that from last year,” Robin Olive, founder of Straight Up Abilities, said. But this year, Olive said the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the lives of her dance students with physical and intellectual disabilities who thrive on routine. “Mid-March was kind of like an, ‘Uh-oh, what are we going to do,'” she said. And while nothing beats dancing together in the same space, Olive figured out a way to virtually teach her students. “I keep reminding them that we have this avenue that we can still see each other, that we can still dance,” she said. Thanks to the sponsorship of the Reachability Foundation, anyone of any age or ability can participate in a free, 30-minute class six days per week at noon. Olive said the class averages about 80 participants and was allowing people who love to dance build connections...
