The owner of the iconic Sears building in Boyle Heights has scaled back a controversial proposal to house homeless people there, reducing the number of beds from 10,000 to 2,500. Many community members remained deeply upset by the new proposal, with some likening it to a “concentration camp” or “Manzanar” at a raucous four-hour online meeting Thursday and a protest the day before. Homeless people from the neighborhood would be first in line for the 2,500 beds, said project spokesperson Leandro Chaya, with senior citizens, LBGTQ+ youths, veterans and families next on the list. “We have an opportunity to help the Boyle Heights community and the homeless population,” Chayra, son of El Mercadito co-founder Arturo Chayra, said before the meeting. “Everyone says they want to help, but they don’t come up with plans. Here, we have a plan.” Built in 1927, the Art Deco-style Sears building was once a hub of Boyle Heights, where people purchased everything from baby clothes to prom dresses to refrigerators. LUSH, green grass is a thrill when it's spread out on your lawn. But when grass finds its way into your flowerbeds, it can do more harm than good, choking your perennials and spreading through the space. 2Grass in your flowerbeds can choke existing flowers and prevent new growthCredit: Getty It may seem impossible to banish grass from your flower beds once it's infiltrated, but one plant expert provided three methods to get rid of it for good. Tim Johnson, the senior director of horticulture at the Chicago Botanic Garden, shared his tactics in the Chicago Tribune. "Grass is difficult to eradicate once it gets established in the crowns of perennials and in beds of groundcovers," Johnson explained. One method, which is time-intensive but effective, is to start pulling up grass as soon as you see it. A HARVARD professor is preparing a "fishing expedition" off the coast of Papa New Guinea to scour the bottom of the sea for potential evidence of extraterrestrial life. It was a day of shame, if such an emotion is ever felt in Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin. Every sick child at Kyiv’s main paediatric hospital – Ukraine’s biggest – who is judged able to survive the journey is being evacuated to the West. Just the name Murphy bed makes me laugh. It conjures memories of slapstick comedies, where the beds drop into rooms unannounced or swallow up unsuspecting characters at the most inopportune moments. A bed tumbling out of nowhere into a living room or library seems so funny to me that when a pitch for a new generation of Murphy beds – please call them wall beds – hit my inbox recently, I almost didn’t take it seriously. I sobered up quickly, however, as I thought about the last two years, when many of us struggled to find ways to make spaces in our homes do double, even triple duty. Kitchen tables became classrooms, bedrooms became offices and family rooms doubled as daycares. Grown kids boomeranged home at the same time  elderly parents fled senior living centers to move in with their adult children causing beds to be in short supply. Suddenly, a space-saving bed that disappears into a wall seems ingenious and quite possibly essential. “Our company saw a big uptick in sales during the pandemic,” said Gabriella Pomata, spokeswoman for...
All but two of the national parks in California had more visitors last year than in 2020, and several even rebounded past their 2019 visitor numbers. The numbers in the chart below are the annual visitor counts updated this week by the National Park Service for the top 21 of the agency’s parks, monuments and other sites in California. Again leading the list is Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which encompasses a swath of tourist destinations in San Francisco and Marin County and on the Peninsula. Yosemite reclaimed its No. 2 spot, having been bumped by Joshua Tree in 2020. The two parks that had better 2020 numbers — Lassen Volcanic and Lava Beds — were heavily affected by last summer’s wildfires. The chart and the map exclude the five parks that each got fewer than 100,000 visitors last year: four in the Bay Area — the John Muir and Eugene O’Neill historic sites, Rosie the Riveter and Port Chicago — plus the Cesar Chavez site in Kern County. When the vast majority of your life is happening within the four walls of your home, every square foot counts. So the past two years have inspired some serious, space-saving creativity. “Everybody all of a sudden was just surrounded by their environment, just sort of thinking, ‘If I’m going to be spending this much time here, I really want it to be great quality space,’” says interior designer and HGTV host Vern Yip. Oddly enough, one popular strategy for creating multipurpose spaces at home in 2022 is an innovation born more than a century ago: the Murphy bed, a fully made bed emerging from a wall to instantly transform a living room into a bedroom. New Jersey-based interior designer Karen Topjian remembers seeing Murphy beds in old black-and-white Hollywood movies and thinking they looked wonderfully glamorous. It seemed almost magical, she thought. Unlike a sofabed that requires moving cushions and some degree of assembly, Murphy beds have the superpower of transforming a space with just a single motion. Of course, the spring-loaded metal bed that nearly destroyed Charlie...

Last week, the Minneapolis City Council joined Hennepin County in helping to fund an effort to create more transitional housing for the area’s homeless.  The project, run by Simpson Housing Services and located at the corner of 1st Ave and 28th Street in the Whittier neighborhood, will increase the size of the organization’s current one-level shelter to five stories. And though the number of shelter beds offered now — roughly 70 — won’t change, the new space will dedicate the majority of the shelter’s beds into supported housing, which will include a suite of services to access affordable housing, mental health and chemical dependency treatment, job placement, and more. The city and county together provided $7 million toward the $35 million project. Hennepin County contributed $3.5 million while Minneapolis added another $3.5 million — all of it coming out of funds received by the local governments under the federal American Rescue Plan.  “These 42 additional units are critical, the 70 units of emergency shelter are really important, but here’s the thing: we need to keep our nose to grindstone on...

For some plants, frost is the worst. Those early seedlings of tomatoes, peppers, okra, and summer squash just can’t withstand seemingly the most insignificant chilly nights. That means that, for eager gardeners, disaster can strike before the growing season even gets underway. However bad we may want to, none of us can control the weather, a sad situation that is become more apparent with each new year in the age of climate change. Many of the weather phenomena we’ve taken for granted for eons are changing, so sometimes we get super-hot in the summer and other times rogue cold snaps. The comfort of dogs and cats inside the home is one of the key points to achieve the animal welfare and also to achieve an ideal coexistence between pets and their caregivers. Of all your home needs, one of the most important is the place where we will locate feeders, drinkers, beds and sandboxes (in the case of felines). Let’s tackle, point by point, all these aspects. Cats: where to place feeder and drinker A basic rule is that of avoid nooks or corners to locate these two containers. Why? Well because cats they like to control everything that happens around him, due in large part to his developed survival instinct, and although indoors there are usually no great threats to him, placing his feeder and drinker in a central place and if possible high will provide him the opportunity to feel comfortable and safe. The second big rule of thumb would be to place food as far away from the litter box as possible and in separate rooms whenever possible. Although many cats do not usually mind that...
Although it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, the former British colony has generally succeeded in bringing the pandemic under control. It only totals 11,000 cases and 200 deaths linked to the coronavirus in one year. But this accounting result was obtained at the cost of some of the most drastic restrictive measures in the world. Anyone who tests positive for the coronavirus is immediately hospitalized in isolation, whether or not showing symptoms, and those considered “close contacts” are sent for two weeks to government-operated quarantine camps. Finally, most people entering the territory must observe a quarantine of three weeks in dedicated hotels, at their expense. If, also in the context of the ongoing Chinese political repression, these measures have not yet given rise to any major challenges, indignation has started to rise in recent weeks due to the weariness of part of the country. the population facing restrictions which seem to be becoming permanent. Anger is mounting on social media over the practice of separating children from their parents in segregation units, with...
