Ernest Hemingway's mansion on the Florida Keys has been battered by Hurricane Ian's 155mph winds, but all the six-toes cats that roam the property have been reported safe. The famous home, where the great American scribe wrote 70 per cent of his published works, has been struck by debris and suffered superficial wind damage, according to The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum App. But the structure is sound and the cats are doing fine after being put into sheltered cages as the Category Four hurricane lashed the property on Tuesday into Wednesday. 'We've seen some debris blown across the grounds and wind damage. A lot has been blown across the garden,' spokesperson Alexa Morgan told DailyMail.com. Staff have been working to clean up the leaves and tree debris and have the museum open for business once again tomorrow.  'All out cats are safe - we don't put them in cages, they walk around and naturally know to get to safety during storms,' Alexa said. 'The cats and staff are safe. We are cleaning the debris today and will resume open for tomorrow.'...

Remaining defiant, though, Sofiia says she is 'glad he is no longer a part of my life'. She told The Sun: 'I really loved him and thought we’d spend the rest of our lives together and have children but he changed. I think the pressure got to him. DEAR MISS MANNERS: My family grew up in a lovely area. I still live here, while my brother and sister-in-law have moved out of state. My brother occasionally reaches out to ask if they can stay with me for a weekend to attend events and visit family and friends. I love having company, and welcome visitors whenever I can. But since moving away, my brother and his wife have taken to making negative comments to me about the state in which we all grew up — about our governor, the traffic, the high cost of living, the weather, you name it — all while staying in my house! I am not sure how to respond to these comments. Do I tell my brother ahead of the next visit that he is welcome, but ask him to leave the negative comments at home? Do I decline his request and suggest they choose another sibling with whom to stay? Do I just smile and tell them I’m so happy they have found a much better place for themselves? I get stressed just...
Most workers insist they can work productively from home but their bosses overwhelmingly disagree, a survey found. The Microsoft poll found that 80 per cent of managers think employees get more done in the office. But 87 per cent of their staff feel they are just as efficient at home – or more so. The technology giant asked more than 20,000 workers across 11 countries their views on working from home. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella told the BBC: 'We have to get past what we describe as "productivity paranoia" because all of the data we have that shows that 80 per cent-plus of the individual people feel they're very productive – except their management thinks that they're not productive. 'That means there is a real disconnect in terms of the expectations and what they feel.' More than 85 per cent of workers feel they are just as efficient at home – or more so Mr Nadella and Ryan Roslansky, boss of LinkedIn, the Microsoft-owned networking site for professionals, said Covid had triggered one of the greatest shifts in work...

Ask Reita Green the Wallpaper Queen what makes a successful wallpaper hanger and she’ll tell you it’s practice, patience and believing in yourself. “You can’t be upset if it’s not working right away,” said the 86-year-old, who has been hanging wallpaper in and around Los Angeles for more than half a century. “You just pull the paper back and put more paste on it. It’s not an art that is wham, bam, thank you, ma’am.” Since 1960 the former dancer and actress has run her own wallpapering business — lugging buckets, ladders and a folding table from her car to her clients’ homes by herself, well into her 80s. But a few years ago, even the Wallpaper Queen had to acknowledge that eventually she might need some help. “I was getting older, so I started keeping my eyes open for somebody,” Green said. “I knew the universe would help me when it was the right time.” And then in 2020 she met Beverly Pate — a warm young woman 58 years her junior, who exudes patience, kindness and a...

WOLVES are sweating over a work permit which would allow Diego Costa to solve their striker crisis. Bruno Lage will discover today whether the desperate SOS he sent to the former 33-year-old Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Atletico Mineiro striker can be answered. 1Wolves are trying to sign ex-Chelsea striker CostaCredit: AFP Or whether Costa's application will be rejected on the grounds of his age and lack of recent international appearances for Spain. ARE you shopping for a new paint color to brighten up your bedroom or refresh your living room? Before you decide, hear what these interior design experts have to say – the paint colors they would skip might surprise you. 1Interior design experts warned against pastels and warm beige for inside the homeCredit: Getty The team at House Digest curated a list of paint colors experts would avoid, and the roundup includes a number of trendy and staple colors. Warm white, for example, can make your space look cozy and tidy, but it might look unclean, the experts warned. "Many shades of white aren't truly white – instead, they're a very light version of a different color," the experts explained. "Whatever undertone exists will end up becoming visible once you add the paint to your walls. "That means that you need to choose a white hue with the right undertones to avoid it looking like an entirely different shade, or to avoid it looking dingy," they advised. (CNN)When it's not going your way, it's really not going your way. In what has been a tough season for the Los Angeles Angels, Thursday night was another painful outing. From a positive angle, the team hit seven solo home runs, tied for the most in a game by any team all-time. However, the Angels eventually lost against the Oakland Atheltics 8-7 in Anaheim, California, and in doing so, tied an MLB record for the most home runs scored in a defeat. When the retired doctor and his wife fled their home in Ukraine, they took only the most precious things with them – a white linen tablecloth with pink edges hand stitched by her great great grandmother and a spoonful of dirt from her garden she keeps in a heart-shaped box. Fewer than a third of the US' white collar workforce show up to the office on Fridays, a new study has revealed as firms dream up lavish perks to try and lure them back. The statistics, tabulated by New York property management company Kastle Systems, illustrates the persisting popularity of the hybrid work model well into the pandemic, particularly towards the end of the workweek. Just 30 per cent of staff are showing up on Fridays, according to swipe card data. Tuesday and Wednesday are the busiest days of the week for offices, with half of workers showing up on both days. On Monday, just 41 per cent will show up, while Thursdays see 46 per cent of workers come into the office - even though the COVID pandemic began close to two-and-a-half years ago. The phenomenon has left employers at a loss as to how to fill seats as turnout dwindles - with many high-profile companies now enlisting services such as food trucks and wine carts to incentivize staffers to stop working from home. SAN FRANCISCO — With age comes the inevitable physical toll. Bodies don’t bend like they used to. Everything moves a bit slower. Professional athletes, with millions invested in their training regimens, are able to blunt these effects. But age is undefeated. Evan Longoria, in his halcyon days as a three-time Gold Glover, probably nabs Tim Anderson at first on his dribbler to lead off the fourth. Brandon Belt, not long ago, never would have allowed Andrew Vaughn’s ground ball to skirt through the infield on the following play. But Longoria is 36 now, reportedly pondering retirement after this season. Belt is 34 and battled physical issues all season. The Giants are the oldest team in the majors and by many metrics, also the league’s worst defensive team. So, no, neither soft-hit ball resulted in an out. Both runners would score as part of a three-run rally off Logan Webb, who retired the first nine batters of the game with ease, while his defense imploded behind him, sending the Giants to their ninth loss in 12 games, 5-3, to the Chicago...

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton each homered as the Yankees set a new major league record for home runs in the month of June — with a game to go. The Bombers scored all their runs on those two shots as they completed the three-game sweep of the A’s 5-3 Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. With the sweep of the A’s (25-52) in three games here this week, the Yankees (56-20) have swept nine series. It was the first time they have swept a series against Oakland since a four-game sweep in Oakland May 19-22, 2016. The last time the Yankees swept the A’s in the Bronx was back in 2010. Last year, the Yankees swept 12 series all season. “We’re better, we’re a better team,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It’s hard to sweep, for us now, for any team we’ve been a part of in the past. I love the hunger in this group and the commitment to just the simplicity of how are we going to win the game today. “And guys come in with that kind...
The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol focused its inquiry Tuesday on the pressure campaign by former President Donald Trump and his allies urging local officials to help overturn the 2020 election. During the course of several testimonies, top Republican election officials and a Georgia election worker recalled the various threats they received in connection to Trump’s debunked allegations that the 2020 election was stolen. First to testify was GOP state Rep. Rusty Bowers, the Arizona state House Speaker who voted for Trump in 2020. Bowers offered moving testimony explaining why he refused to go along with Trump’s requests to help him overturn the result of the 2020 election in Arizona. At the end of his testimony, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) asked Bowers about the threats he faced after refusing to help Trump. “Mr. Speaker, those are powerful words. I understand that taking the courageous positions that you did following the 2020 election and defense of the rule of law and protecting the voters of Arizona resulted in you and your family being subjected...

A For Sale sign is displayed in front of a house in Washington, DC.Stefani Reynolds | Afp | Getty Images Sharply higher mortgage rates have caused a sudden pull-back in home sales, and now sellers are rushing to get in before the red-hot market cools off dramatically. The supply of homes for sale jumped 9% last week compared with the same period a year ago, according to Realtor.com. That is the biggest annual gain the company has recorded since it began tracking the metric in 2017. Real estate brokerage Redfin also reported that new listings rose nearly twice as fast in the four weeks ending May 15 as they did during the same period a year ago. "Rising mortgage rates have caused the housing market to shift, and now home sellers are in a hurry to find a buyer before demand weakens further," said Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather. Sellers clearly see the market softening. Pending home sales, a measure of signed contracts on existing homes, dropped nearly 4% in April from March. They were down just over 9%...
