Dissecting veteran outfielder Jason Heyward’s legacy with the Chicago Cubs yields complexities. Heyward’s seven seasons with the organization will end after this season when the Cubs release him with one year remaining on his contract. His numbers — .245 average, .323 on-base percentage and 85 OPS+ in 744 games — aren’t reflective of the talent and production it takes to land the eight-year, $184 million megadeal he signed before the 2016 season. And yet without Heyward and his famous rain-delay speech during Game 7 of the World Series, the Cubs’ title drought might still be ongoing. But at times his contract represented to fans the organization’s inability in the years since in failing to recapture that 2016 magic, a culmination in which the front office committed to a rebuild last year. Heyward spoke Thursday for the first time since President Jed Hoyer announced last month that the sides would part ways before the contract ends. Heyward knows how his long-term deal might be viewed. “I feel like I’m a very fortunate person to be in a select group of players...
The Mets began Saturday night’s game without the National League East lead for the first time since April. Naturally, that invited some alarmist fans to worry more than they should have, sinking into the cold comfort of the Mets being a disappointment like they’d been so many times in previous years. There’s a reason why the past is the past though. These 2022 Mets turned in the exact game that they and their fan base needed, drubbing the Marlins 11-3 in Miami. Five players recorded multiple hits, Carlos Carrasco gave them six stress-free innings, and after an eight-run inning in the fourth all but ended things, they kept their foot on the gas and scored even more after that. “When pitchers make runs matter and leads matter it creates a good atmosphere,” Buck Showalter said. The offense had been the concern for the Mets during most of the last 40 days or so, the period in which Atlanta sprinted from behind and caught them in the standings. While many would point out that the offensive explosion on Saturday came against...
This is certainly not how they wanted it to happen, but the Mets are calling up Mark Vientos. Vientos, a consensus top ten prospect in the Mets’ system, is taking Starling Marte’s spot on the active roster for the time being. Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list as the fracture in his right middle finger has still not healed well enough for him to play. Marte’s IL stint is backdated to Wednesday, Sept. 7. He will be eligible to return on Saturday, Sept. 17 for the Mets’ game at Citi Field against the Pirates. Vientos will join the Mets for their game on Saturday night in Miami, according to manager Buck Showalter, “if the airlines cooperate.” He is 22 years old and the club’s second-round draft pick in 2017 out of his South Florida high school. With 24 home runs at Triple-A this year and a 6-4 frame, Vientos is regarded as one of the best power hitters on the Mets’ farm. The right-handed batting third baseman spent the entire season at Triple-A, where he slugged .519 in...
Dylan Cease was one out away from history last week against the Minnesota Twins before Luis Arraez spoiled his no-hit bid. “It took me a couple hours to get over it,” the Chicago White Sox starter said Thursday. “And then I was ready to get on to the next one.” That next one was Thursday against the Oakland Athletics. While the drama of a no-hitter disappeared in the first with a single by Seth Brown, Cease once again was on his game in a 14-2 victory at Oakland Coliseum. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out nine while walking two in six scoreless innings. “That’s what you’re going to see every time he goes out there,” Sox acting manager Miguel Cairo said after the win. “He goes after the hitters.” Before the game, Cairo said of Cease: “Every time that he pitches, we have a chance to win a ball game.” Coming off the Sept. 3 one-hitter, Cease looked at Thursday as “business as usual.” Business has been very good for Cease, who is in contention for the American...
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Yankees continue to take body blows. Saturday afternoon they had to put Andrew Benintendi on the injured list with what they are calling right wrist inflammation. The left fielder, who left Friday night’s game after feeling something pop during a third-inning swing, was one of the few Yankees hitters who was consistently hitting through their offensive drought and second-half skid. “Right now it’s wrist inflammation. We got to get some more tests and more imaging and more opinions to kind of really narrow down exactly what it is,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before Saturday night’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field. ”I think there’s still some questions out there.” The biggest question obviously is if Benintendi, who was wearing an air cast in the clubhouse before the game, will play again this season. He was brought in at the trade deadline specifically because his lefty bat fit so nicely with the Yankees’ big sluggers and he would set them up well for the playoffs. With 24 games remaining in the regular season, Boone wasn’t sure...
FANS are all saying the same thing after a picture emerged online of food at Bolton Wanderers. Michael Kopech received a visit from the Chicago White Sox training staff while he was warming up before the bottom of the first inning Monday against the Kansas City Royals. Kopech faced four batters — allowing a walk, hitting a batter, giving up an RBI single and another walk — before exiting with left knee soreness. The Sox placed the right-hander on the the 15-day injured list with a left knee strain before Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Kopech was relieved when he heard the results of the evaluation. “Because if it was something that was severe, I could potentially be missing the rest of the season,” he said. “I’m very fortunate that’s not the case and I have a chance to come back and continue pitching and helping the team win. It’s not ideal to go on the IL, but to know I could come back and maybe make a stronger push at the end, that’s a good thing for me.” Of his pregame issues Monday, Kopech said: “It’s one of those days where you...

Fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates are fed up with the lack of investment into their baseball team, and it's leading some fans to take action.  After bumping into Pirates owner Bob Nutting, teenager Colin Witte got the opportunity to take a picture with him. Gage Skidmore / Flickr + Apple TV Michael and Denise Okuda In order to make the world of science fiction believable for television or the movies, fans used to “suspend disbelief.” That meant that viewers of the shows needed to cut the filmmaker a break, allowing for some wiggle room with what is considered realistic.  From the late 1970s to the present, fans no longer need to play along with what is presented on screen. Photo-realistic special effects and computer-generated compositing are the norm, allowing fans to become totally immersed in the story. As one of the great franchises in popular culture, “Star Trek” is part of this maturation process.  Thanks to folks who toiled behind the scenes of the “Original Series” films and “Next Generation” series, fans of science fiction were treated to a glimpse of the future, which looked like something which could actually happen. Among the talented people who created the world of “Star Trek,” which is now enjoyed by millions across the globe, are Michael and Denise Okuda. The Okudas are considered by many...
The Nationals honored their former face of the franchise Saturday when they retired Ryan Zimmerman’s number 11. Wasn’t it great to turn back the clock and revisit the 2012-19 era of consistent contention? Here’s how it goes with great players. Everything stops when they shoot for the season. Everyone meets their greatest hopes and worst fears with the ball in the air. “I was thinking, ‘Oh, no,’ ’ the opposing coach said. “When it was in the air, I thought it was the great ending,’ the home coach said This wasn’t about Jimmy Butler’s final 3-point attempt Sunday, the one that missed with 16.6 seconds left in Game 7 against Boston and the sports world debated its merit as the Heat season became its offseason with a 100-96 loss. This was about Dan Marino’s final pass in the 1994 playoff game in San Diego. This is about the Hall of Misses that Butler’s shot now is a part of, the silent room of what-ifs and what-happeneds in South Florida sports that’s as much of being a sports fan as the celebrated moments. “You live with these decisions,’ Marino said a deep pass missed, leaving a long field goal that missed to end that Dolphins season. “I’d take that shot again,’’ Butler said. (CNN)So it comes down to this: a win for Manchester City against Aston Villa at home Sunday on the last day of the English top-flight season guarantees that Pep Guardiola's team retain their Premier League crown. However, a draw or defeat for City would allow quadruple-chasing Liverpool the opportunity to steal in and snatch the title away from the defending champion. Three years ago, City pipped Liverpool to the Premier League title by a point, and will be favorites to do so again. Since drawing 2-2 with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on April 10, City comfortably won its next three home games, scoring 13 goals.Ahead of Sunday's round of fixtures, Guardiola's team has also had a week off, while Villa played on Thursday, drawing 1-1 with Burnley. SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — Liverpool took the Premier League title race with Manchester City to the final round of the season after coming from behind again to beat Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday. Joel Matip completed Liverpool’s latest comeback by unwittingly heading home the winning goal in the 67th minute, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s team a point behind City with one game left for each team. That’s on Sunday, when Liverpool hosts Wolverhampton at the same time as City is at home to Aston Villa — managed by Liverpool great Steven Gerrard. City remains the favorite but Liverpool has done its part by taking the defending champions to the wire. The quadruple is still on for Liverpool, but only just. Klopp fielded basically a second-choice lineup at St. Mary’s Stadium, with the game coming only three days after Liverpool’s energy-sapping FA Cup final against Chelsea that went 120 minutes before the Reds won a penalty shootout. Despite the slew of changes, Liverpool dominated a passive Southampton team with nothing left to play for this season but still fell behind in the 13th...
Commentary on Pac-12 developments on and off the field …  Rising: Pac-12 pushback on NIL Of all the challenges facing college athletics, the absolute front-burner issue for the Pac-12 and other conferences is the entirely predictable hijacking of name, image and likeness (NIL). Intended to provide a way for athletes to profit off their actual accomplishments, it has quickly become a proxy for pay-for-play: Boosters lure transfers and high school recruits with promises of cash payments. (In most cases, the exchanges have tacit approval from the coaching staff.) The situation has caused much consternation within college sports. It’s a topic of conversation this week at the Pac-12  spring meetings in Scottsdale and, it seems, in Washington, D.C. Commissioner George Kliavkoff and his SEC counterpart, Greg Sankey, are meeting with politicians today to discuss potential congressional oversight of the NIL marketplace, according to Sports Illustrated. Talk about an alliance. Kliavkoff and Sankey have been on opposite sides of several developments since the former began his tenure on July 1. Just a few weeks later, news broke that Texas and Oklahoma would...
2022 will be a season in which many of the most significant products of the Orioles’ rebuilding project will arrive in Baltimore, where they’ll hope to add to the stories already told between being acquired and reaching the majors. That’s the case for right-hander Kyle Bradish, Baltimore’s No. 9 prospect according to Baseball America. Promoted to the majors for the first time Friday — with infielder Tyler Nevin also recalled as right-hander Mike Baumann was optioned and left-hander Alex Wells was placed on the injured list with elbow soreness — Bradish will start against the Boston Red Sox and is the most significant prospect acquired under executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias to join the Orioles. Here’s a look back at Bradish’s journey in the organization, as told by The Baltimore Sun, since he was acquired in December 2019′s Dylan Bundy trade. Getty Does cornerback help come for the Rams in the latest mock draft? One year ago, the Los Angeles Rams took a star from the non-Football Bowl Subdivision realm as one of their NFL Draft picks, as versatile cornerback Robert Rochell from Central Arkansas got taken at 130th overall. Could the number of Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) talent double come Friday, April 25? There’s a strong chance. The April 15 Heavy on Rams mock draft had the Super Bowl 56 champs going with cornerback help first through Cam Taylor-Britt of Nebraska, followed by offensive guard Lecitus Smith of Virginia Tech going next in round four. Only one FCS representative (Noah Elliss of Idaho) comprised the eight projected picks. Now, the duo of Lorenzo Reyna and Conor Roche have unveiled their second mock picks for the champs. And now it’s not just two times the FCS talent…but three times the sleeper fun. Here’s who both came up with: Round 3, No. 104 Overall: Zyon McCollum, Cornerback, Sam Houston State The Cornhusker Taylor-Britt is now projected to be...
Albert Pujols hit his first home run of the season on Tuesday night in St. Louis, where he spent the first 11 years of his illustrious career. It was the 680th home run of his career and his 446th with the Cardinals With Pujols on deck in the first inning, Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer off the Royals’ Daniel Lynch to put St. Louis up 2-0. Pujols wasted no time in following suit, smacking the first pitch he saw into the left field stands. Cardinals play-by-play man Dan McLaughlin was ecstatic. “In the air, out to deep left, it is gone! If the Nets win out, they will finish seventh. It’s the silver lining, the light at the end of a dark tunnel for a Nets team that’s sustained blow after blow in a season littered with championship aspirations. For all their struggles, all their injuries, all their troubles and misfortunes, the Nets are still in control of their own fate. They can still hold home-court advantage in next Tuesday’s play-in tournament game. They can still avoid a win-or-go-home scenario if they string together enough wins. Tuesday’s win over the Houston Rockets, plus losses by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Hornets, vaulted the Nets up the standings from 10th to 8th place. As long as the Nets handle business and win their remaining three games, it doesn’t matter what happens elsewhere. They hold the tiebreakers over both the Hawks and Cavaliers and are a full game ahead of the Hornets. If the Nets win out, they will give themselves the best possible chance at securing the East’s seventh seed. “I think it would be great. It would be great...
Last season’s NCAA Tournament ultimately unfolded in familiar fashion. Upsets early — hi, Oral Roberts! — before the powerhouses eventually took over. By the time the championship game rolled around, undefeated Gonzaga and twice-beaten Baylor — two No. 1 seeds — were playing for the title. The lesson, then, is simple: By all means, have fun picking those first-weekend upsets, but in the end, don’t be surprised if the champion is a team that’s looked like a contender all season. Who is that this year? Let’s take a look at some of the most popular analytical websites for some answers. Ken Pomeroy’s site puts the following teams in the top 10: Gonzaga, Arizona, Kentucky, Houston, Baylor, Kansas, Tennessee, UCLA, Texas Tech and Auburn. A similar site run by Bart Torvik has the same teams in the top 10, except Duke replaces Auburn. ShotQuality.com sees it a bit differently, putting Purdue, Illinois and Villanova in the top 10, with Auburn, Duke, UCLA and Tennessee a bit lower. Here’s one way to go with the 2022 bracket: (This message will...
Instant reaction to developments on and off the field … 1. Big news in the Palouse There are 238 days until the start of the 2022 season. If the Hotline were ever to ponder a scenario that appears extreme, — a scenario that’s about five steps ahead of the current reality — this is the time. And here we go: Washington State might have just won the 2022 North division quarterback shuffle. That’s right. The day the Cougars lost their promising young passer to the transfer portal, they might have set the stage for the best quarterback play in the division next season. Jayden de Laura, the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year who tossed 23 touchdowns and led the Cougars to a second-place finish, entered the transfer portal on Friday. That could prove a debilitating blow to WSU’s prospects for next season. If things don’t break right over the coming months, and if none of the remaining quarterbacks on the roster develop, then the Cougars could struggle offensively in their first full season under coach Jake Dickert. But again,...
In one of the least surprising storylines of the NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are still really bad. And while the team is struggling on the field, their mascot struggled above it. Sunday afternoon, during the Jaguars’ 21-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, team mascot Jaxson de Ville attempted to spark the crowd by bungee jumping over the stadium. The mascot opened the stunt with an impressive backflip off one of the stadium light stands, but instead of swinging over the crowd on his way down to the field, de Ville got stuck, and briefly dangled helplessly. It’s a stunt de Ville has completed successfully in the past, but Sunday afternoon the mascot needed to be safely lowered into the upper deck of the stadium after taking the initial plunge off the light stand. @JaxsonDeVille @Jaguars What an entrance ???????? pic.twitter.com/5FwA0Qiaq8 — Jackson(ville)???? If all the main players from Succession found themselves in The Circle, who do we think would win? “Mass in Time of War,” the second episode in the Murdochian HBO drama’s third season, might as well take place in Netflix’s candy-colored quarantine studios. He calls Connor to apologize for calling his presidential campaign a “horseshit pipe dream” and promises, “You’re my No. 1”—a claim so brazenly untrue even...

Live Like Madison! Famous This Is Us Home for Sale Amid Final Season Salesforce hikes forecasts again, reports strong quarter as Slack acquisition closes It has been a repetitive few weeks in the AL East. The New York Yankees have won 11 in a row — the star-studded franchise’s longest streak since 1985 — while the moribund Baltimore Orioles carry a 19-game losing streak into Wednesday night’s action that could soon threaten the modern record for consecutive defeats. The Yankees’ accomplishment feels particularly sweet considering they stopped the Atlanta Braves’ nine-game winning streak to do it. And yes, that’s a different Orioles losing streak than the 14-game skid from May, and a different dubious record than the Arizona Diamondbacks set with a 24-game road losing streak (which was partially encompassed by a 17-game run of overall failure).  If you feel like the fortunes of MLB teams have been snowballing — for better or worse — more often in 2021, you’re not wrong. This season has produced five different winning streaks of 10 or more games, the most since 2017...

It was sung but it just needs to be official: Leandro Bolmaro is going to make the jump to the NBA and to play starting next season for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 20-year-old Argentine guard arrived in Barcelona in 2018, and last season he was more in the first team, each time with more confidence and more minutes. A very valuable year of learning after ruling out the League change before last season. Bolmaro was chosen No. 23 by the Timberwolves in the 2020 draft, earning him a contract worth more than $ 11 million for four seasons. But, as with first-round players, the first two are fully guaranteed (for about 4.5 million total) and the third and fourth depend on one-sided franchise renewal options. Bolmaro had a contract with Barcelona until 2023 and a clause of almost one million euros. He will pay it, with the help of the Wolves, who by agreement can only put a maximum of $ 750,000 (about 635,000 euros) on their part. The rest will be paid by the player, who has the presence...
