Joe Rogan is finally responding to controversial comments he made about homelessness in Los Angeles during a discussion on his podcast over the summer. Back in July, on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, he and fellow comedian Tom Segura were discussing the homeless crisis in the city. Segura mentioned that it was illegal to move homeless camps as they are considered personal property. A shocked Rogan then followed up with a joke saying, “You’d get arrested. Hilarious. But they wouldn’t arrest you if you shot somebody. Maybe you should just go shoot the homeless people.” The clip went viral and many, including homeless advocates, became enraged. During a recent appearance on Segura’s podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cave, Rogan addressed the comments for the first time. Rogan began the conversation by arguing that joking about certain things is almost impossible now. “Oh my God,” Segura chimed in. “The thing that, you know — you probably lose track of this all the time because it happens to you like every day. But when I did your podcast last and we...

Minnie Miñoso’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday culminates a long and complicated journey to Cooperstown, N.Y., that few imagined would end this way. The former Chicago White Sox legend — who will join David Ortiz, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Buck O’Neil, Gil Hodges and Bud Fowler in the 2022 class — repeatedly was deemed unworthy from his original retirement in 1964 to his death at 90 in 2015. Miñoso was an afterthought in the minds of the Baseball Writers Association of America, which originally kept him out of the Hall during his years of eligibility. Early veterans committees shot him down as a viable candidate, as did a revamped veterans committee in 2003 consisting of Hall of Famers and those who had earned plaques in Cooperstown through broadcasting or writing about the game. (The Hall disbanded the 15-member veterans panel after Bill Mazeroski’s election in 2001, feeling it was too political.) But Miñoso, known as the “Cuban Comet,” still fared poorly with his peers, finishing with only 16 votes by the 85-man committee, which was tied...
Giovanni Cabrera remained undefeated, beating former prospect Gabriel Flores Jr. by unanimous decision in Hinckley, MN, in the Top Rank co-main event.  Gabriel Flores Jr. was signed by Top Rank at 17, hoping he would one day become a world champion. Those hopes likely crumbled for good after he suffered his second career defeat at the hands of Giovanni Cabrera on Saturday, July 23. It only took Cabrera seven seconds to drop Flores for the first time at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN. A straight left from Cabrera out of the southpaw stance put Flores on the seat of his pants. Flores got up on unsteady legs. Near the final minute of the round, Cabrera dropped Flores for the second time. Flores again got up and survived a strong attack from Cabrera to close a horribly lopsided round. MANCHESTER UNITED failed to win for the first time under new manager Erik ten Hag as Aston Villa came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in Perth. Steven Gerrard's team came back out for the second half an improved side and swiftly pulled one back thanks to a wonderful individual goal from Leon Bailey. The Jamaican, 24, picked the ball up on the halfway line and drove at Victor Lindelof before bending a low effort into the far corner. Villa pressed for an equaliser late on and eventually found it in stoppage time when Calum Chambers headed in from a corner. More to follow. Most read in Premier LeagueKEEPING IT REAL Kim...

This past week, Niko, a Staffordshire terrier, was taken from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Albemarle County, Virginia, and euthanized. Niko was the subject of the Facebook group Save NIKO, and the subject of court battles for the last seven years. In August 2015, Niko’s owner, Toni Sue Stacey, was convicted in Albemarle County Circuit Court for owning a dangerous dog after Niko killed a neighborhood cat. The judge sentenced Stacey to 90 days in jail, but suspended all of it, with the conditions that Stacey be on good behavior, and that Niko would be euthanized. Niko had been condemned to be euthanized, but seven years later, he’s still alive and living at a no-kill shelter. (Courtesy Toni Sue Stacey) Since then, the owner has been advocating for other options. Her attorney Elliot Harding told WINA radio Charlottesville that they identified several other options. “He could have been given to a sanctuary; he could have been given to an individual; he could have been put into behavioral rehabilitation aspects so we would have less dog...
PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) — Bulls from Spain´s revered Miura ranch starred in a fast and uncomplicated final running of the bulls at this year´s San Fermín Festival on Thursday. The Spanish Red Cross said two people needed to be taken to a Pamplona city hospital for knocks and bruises following the run that lasted just over two minutes. No horn gorings were reported as the Miuras, known for their alertness and speed of reaction, kept mainly in a pack and took little notice of the runners as they raced to the bullring. One runner escaped serious injury when one bull´s horn appeared to graze the right side of his head before he fell to the ground. The festival’s eighth and final 8 a.m. run saw hundreds of people, mostly men and far fewer than usual, test their agility to accompany six fighting bulls and their guiding steer along an 875-meter (956-yard) route through Pamplona to the city’s bullring. The bulls are killed by professional bullfighters later in the day. Tens of thousands of visitors attend the Pamplona festival,...
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona’s nearly eight-year hiatus in using the death penalty ended with the execution of Clarence Davis for killing a college student 44 years ago, making him the sixth person to be put to death in the U.S. so far this year. Dixon’s death Wednesday for the 1978 killing of 21-year-old Arizona State University student Deana Bowdoin broke the lull in Arizona’s use of capital punishment caused by a 2014 execution that critics say was botched and the difficulty that state officials faced in sourcing lethal injection drugs. Dixon’s death appeared to track the state’s protocol, though the medical team had some difficulty finding a vein to administer the lethal drugs. They first tried his arms and then made an incision in his groin area. That process took about 25 minutes. After the drugs were injected, Dixon’s mouth stayed open and his body did not move. The execution was declared completed about 10 minutes after he was injected. Another Arizona death row prisoner, Frank Atwood, is scheduled to be executed on June 8 in the killing of...
The Chicago Bulls season ended with an air of inevitability Wednesday night as the team crumpled against the Milwaukee Bucks in a 116-100 Game 5 loss to close their best-of-seven first-round series. The Bulls’ chances went from unlikely to grim after starters Alex Caruso (concussion) and Zach LaVine (COVID-19) were both ruled out of Game 5 early Wednesday. Bucks fans weren’t excited as they trickled into Fiserv Forum — they were expectant. Even Bulls coach Billy Donovan arrived in Milwaukee with dimmed positivity. “We’ll see what happens tonight,” Donovan said before the game. “Look, stranger things have happened.” The only unexpected part of the loss was DeMar DeRozan’s stat line. Without LaVine available to balance the scoring, the weight of the Bulls offense fell fully onto DeRozan’s shoulders. After his 41-point performance in their Game 2 victory, the Bulls knew what DeRozan is capable of under duress — but so did the Bucks, who spent the night throwing themselves in the All-Star forward’s way. DeRozan couldn’t cut through the swarm of Bucks defenders who surrounded him anytime he touched the...
Wladimir Klitschko has suggested he could make a sensational return to professional boxing - but only when the war in Ukraine is over and there is no Russian threat.  The 46-year-old - who was a world champion at heavyweight level for 11 years - retired in August 2017 following his defeat against Anthony Joshua at Wembley earlier that year. The Ukrainian has in the years since stayed away from the ring and after Russia invaded his homeland in February, he joined the Kyiv Territorial Defence in response to Vladimir Putin's assault.  Yet in an interview with German outlet BILD following Tyson Fury's victory over Dillian Whyte on Saturday night Klitschko - whose brother Vitali is also a former world champion and is now Mayor of Kyiv - says he has not ruled out donning his gloves once again.  'I also learned that despite the war, you shouldn't forget life. Sport is part of my life. I'm delighted that Tyson Fury won,' he said.  'Who knows, I don't want to promise anything big here, but if I'm in good shape and,...
On Friday, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman suggested that the only way to stop Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine was “the Russian people finding a way to remove” President Vladimir Putin. Friedman, in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” warned that Russia went from having “bad boy Putin” who would never quite cross the line to “war criminal Putin.” “We’ve gone from bad boy [Vladimir] Putin to war criminal Putin,” Friedman declared. “Now, when the head of Russia is a war criminal, when Russia becomes a pariah state, Russia that spans 11 time zones, Russia that has more nuclear warheads than any country in the world, Russia that is the biggest oil exporter in the world, Russia, which is the biggest wheat and fertilizer exporter in the world, what kind of world are we living in? That’s a very different world when Russia is a pariah state, not North Korea.” “And frankly … I don’t know how this ends other than with the Russian people finding a way to remove Putin,” he continued. “Now, if they remove Putin, one...
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell warned of an 'utter meltdown' at the border if the Biden administration moves away from using Title 42 authority to reject immigration claims based on health grounds tied to the pandemic.  He blasted the idea of a sudden change in policy – after the White House signaled the policy could end as soon as next month under its periodic reconsideration. 'This move would take our border from its current state of chaos into a whole new level of utter, utter meltdown,' said McConnell said on the Senate floor Tuesday. The administration is under pressure to roll back its use of the authority, now that covid cases are dropping and vaccines continue to proliferate. 'It would be wildly reckless for Democrats to simply stand down and let the floodgates open,' McConnell warned.

Taser still needed When officers arrived on scene, they saw the 19-year-old walking down the street toward them — and still with a knife in his hand, CWB Chicago said, citing the police report. So officers had to deploy a Taser to get the suspect under control, and then they placed him in custody, the station said. Emergency medical services took the 19-year-old St. Francis Hospital, where it was determined that an injury to his leg — initially believed to be a self-inflicted cut — was actually a gunshot wound, CWB Chicago said, adding that the suspect was listed as being in good condition. EMS also treated the 19-year-old’s mother for a minor injury to her hand, the outlet reported. Detectives are investigating the incident, CWB Chicago noted. Here's a report on the massive spike in Chicago violence so far in 2022:

The Ravens’ 2021 season will forever be defined by injuries, and Sunday’s 16-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime was a fitting, yet heartbreaking conclusion. Throughout the game, the Ravens watched players such as outside linebacker Tyus Bowser and running back Devonta Freeman suffer injuries on the wet field at M&T Bank Stadium, continuing a turbulent season in which the Ravens went from being the No. 1 seed in the AFC to losing six straight and being knocked out of playoff contention. Despite filling key positions with practice squad players and veteran free agents, the Ravens don’t want to use that as an excuse for how the season turned out. “We can’t say, ‘What if,’” quarterback Tyler Huntley said. “We’ve just got to face the facts of what happened. And like I said, what if we would’ve made that last play in those last few games and got an extra field goal or an extra touchdown, we wouldn’t even be talking about ‘What if.’ So, I just feel like right now, we’ve got to face what’s...

OAKLAND — Chantal Azanga-Lennon still texts her son’s phone, though it remains stowed away in a dark police locker as evidence in his January 2021 slaying. She has yet to unpack his black Saturn Ion, which was shipped back to her home in Georgia and remains parked in the carport, stuffed with his clothes, shoes and unopened mail. “When I want to do it, my heart just races and I just can’t stop the tears,” Azanga-Lennon said. “I felt like that would make it real.” It’s been more than a decade since the ripples of violence on Oakland’s streets extended as far and touched as many households as they did in 2021, with a surge in homicides and shootings spreading across the city. Even as other crime rates have ebbed or dropped across Oakland and throughout the Bay Area, the rising tide of gun violence in this city has left a growing swell of grief, and further stoked a debate over how best to keep the streets safe. (CNN)2021 wasn't supposed to end like this. The year dawned in a blaze of hope that new, effective Covid-19 vaccines -- free and available to all -- would deliver the country from the worst public health emergency in 100 years, in which 350,000 Americans had already died. The promise of a new President, Joe Biden, to shut down the virus rang in the nation's ears after his predecessor had lied about Covid-19's severity, botched the government response and prized his political goals over its health. But the year ends in a dark place. Hospitals are flooded with Covid-19 patients, the transportation network is seizing up, and a new coronavirus variant -- Omicron -- is finding even the most careful citizens. This year was deadlier then the last. More than 820,000 have now perished in the United States alone from Covid-19. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is predicting 44,000 deaths in the next four weeks. The once-unthinkable figure of a million lost Americans looks depressingly credible, and another White House has often seemed outmatched and hoping in vain for best-case...
