(CNN)If you enjoy true crime, detective stories and mysteries, what a time to be alive!Between "The Tinder Swindler" (more on that later), "Inventing Anna" and the like, it's easy to be conned into believing we are in a new era of crime stories.Yet, as the saying goes, what's old is new again — which is what leads this week's newsletter. Three things to watch 'Law & Order'Read More(From left) Camryn Manheim as Lt. Cheers for series creator Dick Wolf bringing it back.Full disclosure: I've advocated on Twitter for the return of my favorite show in the franchise, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," and one of that show's stars, Vincent D'Onofrio, tweeted...
The Bears were never all that close to the Vikings on Monday Night Football but Chicago bettors caught an awful bad beat on the final play of the game. Monday Night Football featured something far from a masterclass in how to succeed in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings dominated the Chicago Bears but, even then, they failed to completely pull away. And that’s why some bettors were hanging around and holding onto hope through every snap of an arduous fourth quarter. The Bears closed as seven-point underdogs heading into the game and there was a lot of action on Chicago covering at home in primetime. MIN (-7) COVERS AT THE BUZZER Never. A. Doubt. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dalvin Cook rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns in his faster-than-expected return from a shoulder injury, and the Minnesota Vikings held on to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 36-28 by forcing an incomplete pass in the end zone on the final play Thursday night. Ben Roethlisberger’s throw to Pat Freiermuth was on target, but Anthony Barr and Harrison Smith sandwiched the rookie tight end at just the right moment to dislodge the ball and give the Vikings (6-7) a critical victory after they nearly squandered a 29-0 late-third-quarter lead. READ MORE: St. Paul Police Seek Help Finding Woman Who Randomly Shot At VehiclesAll but one of Minnesota’s games this year have been decided by eight points or less. Roethlisberger had touchdown passes to Najee Harris, James Washington and Freiermuth in the second half, and Harris ran for a score, too, as the Steelers (6-6-1) recovered from their abysmal start. The Vikings had a 300-66 advantage in total yards in the first half, but Ahkello Witherspoon intercepted Kirk Cousins twice after halftime to fuel the rally. Just as...
John Harbaugh had an interesting choice for player of the game after the Ravens beat the Vikings. The Vikings and Ravens had a dog fight Sunday, and Baltimore was able to just barely edge it out to earn a win. The star of the game? Faith! (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football)   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Baltimore Ravens (@ravens) “We gave the game ball to faith. To faith and favor. It’s going up in the locker room to faith. That’s the star of the game,” Harbaugh told the media after beating the Vikings 34-31. You can watch his full comments below. “We gave the game ball to faith… That’s the star of the game.” pic.twitter.com/vZXZE8loLN — Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) November 7, 2021 I don’t know why, but I found these remarks from Harbaugh absolutely hilarious. He’s more or less saying they won the game by complete luck. I don’t know if he’s conveying the message he thinks he is. At least, that’s my read on the...
Researchers have discovered evidence to support the idea that Vikings settled on the Azores several hundred years before the Portuguese arrived in 1427. Evidence from animal remains has led ecologist Pedro Raposeiro and his team, of the University of the Azores, to believe the Vikings were there first. In a paper published in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this month, Mr Raposeiro said of the findings: 'Our reconstructions offer unambiguous evidence for the pre-Portuguese settlement of the Azores.' Viking sailors are now suggested to have made their way to the Azores in Portugal, a claim which is astonishing since the Norse seafarers have always been linked to the frozen north The claim is astonishing considering Vikings are usually linked to the frozen north. Lakebed sediments from the Azores were recently analysed by the researchers, who found them to be rich in organic compounds that are found in cow and sheep faeces. The samples were also found to contain low levels of pollen from native trees, but had high levels of charcoal. This mixture suggests that early...
It has long been argued that it was the Vikings who first 'discovered' North America, arriving in the New World centuries before Christopher Columbus. But a new study now claims it has evidence showing exactly when this happened. Tests of wooden artefacts show that Scandinavian warriors were already active on the continent exactly 1,000 years ago. This suggests they were the earliest humans known to have crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, beating Columbus by 471 years. Discovery: Tests of chopping wood at a Viking settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows, Canada, has shown that Scandinavian warriors were already active on the Americas 1,000 years ago It wasn't until 1960 that the world woke up to the fact that the Vikings may well have reached the New World before any other Europeans. Archaeologists were convinced that a site on the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, L'Anse aux Meadows (pictured), was a Viking settlement WHAT IS CARBON DATING AND HOW IS IT USED?  Carbon dating, also referred to as radiocarbon dating or carbon-14 dating, is a method that is used to determine the age...
Mandatory Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports If the Minnesota Vikings are to go home with a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, these five players must play well. Based on the history of Mike Zimmer’s tenure, 2021 should be a playoff year for the Minnesota Vikings. But the COVID-19 vaccination status of some notable players, headlined by quarterback Kirk Cousins, has drawn the ire of the head coach who wants to win games and save his job. The risk of not having his starting quarterback available on short notice is not ideal to that pursuit. The Vikings open their season the road against the Cincinnati Bengals. It will be something of a homecoming for Zimmer, as he was the Bengals defensive coordinator for six seasons (2008-2013) before landing in Minnesota. The Bengals were not as bad as their 4-11-1 record indicated last year. They had some close losses, and quarterback Joe Burrow missed the final six games due to a knee injury. Burrow will be ready for the season opener. If the Vikings are going to come...
Antoine Winfield Jr helping the Buccaneers beat the Saints on Sunday was the settling of family business.  His name is Antoine Winfield Jr., they killed his father’s Super Bowl dreams so the Saints needed to die. While Vikings fans won’t be watching playoff football this year, there’s a certain satisfaction in having this loose end tied up. Minnesota got its revenge in the Minneapolis Miracle (and last year in a stunning Wild Card upset) but watching Winfield Jr avenge his father’s loss in the 2009 NFC title game may finally wash as much of that sour taste out of the mouths of fans.
Kyle Zedaker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Bucs take on quarterback Kirk Cousins and his Minnesota Vikings this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium, a key matchup that will likely be the deciding factor in what seed the Bucs get as one of the Wild Card teams in the NFC. The Bucs are probably going to be without one of their “top” corners, Jamel Dean, as the former Auburn corner is doubtful with a groin injury, but the Bucs feel comfortable with sliding veteran backup Ross Cockrell into that position.  If they win this Sunday, they can try to claw their way back into that top wild card spot, currently held by the Seattle Seahawks at 8-4. The top wild card spot will get to face whatever awful team comes out of the NFC East (the Giants currently have the lead with a 5-7 record), making for an easy first-round matchup. The Bucs’ remaining schedule includes two games against the Atlanta Falcons (4-8) and a game against the Detroit Lions (5-7). The Bucs’ record against teams with...
Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was amped after the Seahawks beat the Vikings late Sunday night. Quarterback Russell Wilson engineered an incredible drive at the end of the game to secure the winning touchdown with 15 seconds remaining in the game. I’m not sure you should be this amped after beating the Vikings, but that’s a conversation for a different time. Having said that, there’s no question Carroll was pumped for his team. They fought like hell...
Next1 of 5Prev postUse your ← → (arrows) to browse The NFC North has seen three different champions the last three seasons. Since the league realigned into eight divisions in 2002, the NFC North has been primarily owned by one team. But even before then as a member of the NFC Central, the Green Bay Packers were the dominant club under the guidance of head coach Mike Holmgren and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. Back to the current foursome of the Pack, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. Green Bay has captured 10 of the 18 division titles since ’02, with the Purple Gang and the squad from the Windy City grabbing the top spot four times apiece. This past year, the Packers finished with 13 wins, quite the improvement from a 6-9-1 showing the previous year. New head coach Matt LaFleur obviously pushed the right buttons and both quarterback Aaron Rodgers and emerging running back Aaron Jones had solid years – the latter tying for the NFL lead with 19 total touchdowns. But in each...
