Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre is the biggest star in the Mississippi welfare scheme in which he and other state officials, including the state’s former Department of Human Services Director John Davis and former Republican Gov. Phil Bryant, are under investigation for funneling $77 million worth of welfare funds to their own personal projects—none of which had anything to do with where the funds needed to go. But now a former WWE wrestler also implicated in the scheme is dropping a bomb. Mississippi Today reporter Anna Wolfe, who has been breaking news about this story since it began, joined the latest episode of The New Abnormal podcast to explain how the scandal broke, how it has evolved, and also, a new twist. Subscribe to The New Abnormal on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or Overcast. Former WWE wrestler Ted “Teddy” DiBiase Jr. alleges that he witnessed one of the main officials in this case redirecting welfare funds away from a nonprofit that needed it, because “the nonprofit director was a supporter of the Democratic candidate for...
A Texas doctor whose license was temporarily suspended amid a criminal probe into the death of one of his colleagues has a disturbing history of animal cruelty and domestic abuse accusations, The Daily Beast has learned. On Sept. 9, the Texas Medical Board suspended the license of Dallas anesthesiologist Dr. Raynaldo Rivera Ortiz Jr., 59, referring to an ongoing investigation into “serious cardiac complications and one patient’s death” at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare between May and September. Ortiz is accused of tampering with the facility’s IV bags. The board’s suspension order alleges that the surgery center’s surveillance footage showed Ortiz “depositing single IV bags into the warmer in the hall outside the operating rooms” and that “shortly thereafter a patient would suffer a serious complication.” Authorities say fellow anesthesiologist Dr. Melanie Kaspar died in June soon after taking home an IV bag to rehydrate when she was ill. While her obituary said she’d had a heart attack, officials later determined Kaspar died of accidental bupivacaine toxicity. “Laboratory tests were run on IV bags from the warmer, which displayed visible...
Fox News host Kayleigh McEnany on Friday called on the media to “wait for the facts to come out” before speculating about the FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. If only she practiced what she preached. McEnany, who served in the Trump administration as press secretary during its dark final days, has repeatedly and wildly speculated about the raid on air at Fox News, where she now serves as a host. On Friday’s Outnumbered, McEnany criticized The Washington Post for reporting that the classified materials Trump took with him to Mar-a-Lago included sensitive information about nuclear weapons. She called the story “evasive” and urged the media to proceed with caution regarding its allegations. “My point is, let’s wait for the facts to come out,” she said. “There is a history,” McEnany continued, “of stories on anonymous sources that turn out not to be true, so let’s wait for something called facts, which many networks don’t wait for.” Yet McEnany’s first on-air reaction to the raid ignored facts entirely. Last Tuesday, the morning after the FBI searched Mar-a-Lago,...
Donald Trump became so incensed during the waning days of his presidency that he chucked his lunch against a wall inside the White House, according to testimony given to the Jan. 6 committee. Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified on Tuesday about an incident in which Trump chucked his lunch at a wall inside the White House dining room. Committee member Liz Cheney (R-WY) set the stage. In the weeks after the election, Trump repeated the baseless claim that the election had been stolen from him thanks to widespread voter fraud. The allegation simply wasn’t true, and Attorney General Bill Barr said as much at the time. “On December 1, 2020, Attorney General Barr said in an interview that the Department of Justice had not found evidence of widespread election fraud sufficient to change the outcome of the election,” Cheney stated. “Ms. Hutchinson, how did the president react to hearing that news?” Hutchinson recalled hearing a commotion emanating from the White House dining room, where she soon discovered Trump had hurled...

ROSEMEAD (KABC) -- Students in the garden club at Rosemead High School were delicate with their water usage even before drought restrictions took place."This program would not be able to continue in 10, 20 years if we're not practicing all of these water conservation techniques now," said Liz Christy, a program manager with Eco Urban Gardens. Those within L.A. County must cut back outdoor watering to two days a week. But Christyand students in the Rosemead High garden club were already doing that. Plus, they've added bubblers, a drip irrigation system and a vegetative bioswale for rain water. This school was able to install water conserving systems like this thanks to a grant from California American Water. But according to Christy one of the best secrets to keeping plants moist is actually the cheapest option: mulch."The mulch packs the water in, so preserves the water in there a little bit longer than if you were not to have mulch," said Anna Zhang, a Rosemead High student. And by using sprinkler alternatives like a drip irrigation system you'll save money and water, according to Christy.Follow...
It’s time for a late night dip in D.C. One year after it launched the “Late Night Hype” series of outdoor carnival events at recreation centers, D.C.’s Department of Parks and Recreation is expanding this summer with a series called “Late Night Drip.” It’s an evening pool party, in which one of DPR’s 23 outdoor pools stays open for all to enjoy until 11 p.m. The weekly series begins Friday at Ridge Road Pool and runs from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Late Night Hype is also back again this summer. It features bounce houses, skating/biking, snow cones, popcorn, live music, video games and more. “We’ve been thrilled to see the success of DPR’s innovative Late Night Hype events, with thousands of residents joining together for nights of community fun,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said. “Now, we’re excited to expand the popular series to our pools and ensure young people have plenty of safe, fun and engaging options this summer throughout the District.” “The hype continues to build at DPR,” said Delano Hunter, director of D.C.’s Department of Parks and Recreation....
FOR all the excitable guessing games being played at Westminster, nobody really knows how many Tory MPs have written secret letters demanding a vote of confidence in Boris Johnson. Well, nobody apart from Tory party backbench bigwig Sir Graham Brady, that is — and he’s not picking up the phone to share his secrets. 2Nobody really knows how many Tory MPs have written secret letters demanding a vote of confidence in Boris JohnsonCredit: Getty 2A giant game of Guess Who is gripping Westminster for who might make up the 54 required to trigger a wider vote on Boris’s future What is clear, though, is the trickle of panicking Conservatives writing to 1922 Committee boss Sir Graham to demand a vote on BoJo’s fate is becoming something of a stream. Two more yesterday made it 26 fed-up Conservatives who have now publicly called for the PM to go. Something normal people should bear in mind as we enter the summer months, during which campaigns for the coming midterms will gear up, is this: members of the Washington pundit corps, whose opinions about politics shape the opinions of normal people, are invested in their reputations as shrewd thinkers with access to secret knowledge. Their influence is proportional to your faith in them. Don’t have faith in them. Truth is, members of the pundit corps aren’t special. Like voters, their opinions on current affairs are usually retrospective, not progressive. By that, I mean everything reminds them of something that already happened. They do not, typically do not, use the old to see the new. So the opinions of the pundit corps, which become the opinions of normal people, are oriented to a static understanding of history without awareness that the present being a product of the past. Consider news from the J6 committee. It’s planning to hold six public hearings next month during which members will present evidence collected over the course of their investigation into...
Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) said he was just "acting foolish, and joking" with "a friend" in response to a video he characterized as the latest hit piece meant to destroy his political career. Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) issued a statement Wednesday in which he confirmed a video of him nude and dry-humping another man in a bed is authentic. A group called Fire Madison Cawthorn first posted the video online, and claimed to have the congressman in the nude “DRY HUMPING SOMEONE’S HEAD AND MOANING LOUDLY.” “This video was sent to us by a former Cawthorn supporter and big donor who asked to remain anonymous. It pains us to post it but in the public and voters interest we chose to do so,” Fire Madison Cawthorn wrote. The video appeared legitimate, but Mediaite refrained from reporting on it, as we were unable to authenticate it. On Wednesday evening, the freshman congressman confirmed its authenticity himself in a statement. Cawthorn said the video is him engaging in horseplay with his cousin, and it is from “years ago.” He also alleged it was released as part of a nefarious “drip” campaign to destroy his chances at re-elction. “A new hit against me just dropped,” he wrote. “Years ago, in this video, I was being...
Getty Rep. Madison Cawthorn has responded to a leaked video that went viral on Twitter. Republican North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn has responded to a leaked “sex tape” video saying it shows he and a friend being “crass,” “acting foolish” and “joking.” The video spread on Twitter on May 4, 2022, and Cawthorn responded with a tweet attributing the emergence of the video to a campaign by the “swamp of Washington” Cawthorn had earlier in the day said in a Twitter video there has been a “drip drip campaign” to cost him the GOP nomination in his primary as he seeks a second term in the House of Representatives. Fox News Business host Larry David Kudlow turned Wednesday’s edition of America Reports into a veritable airing of grievances about minor annoyances around the house, including incandescent light bulbs, shower heads, and toilets. David Kudlow appeared as a guest at the end of the show to discuss the Biden administration’s decision to phase out older, energy-intensive incandescent light bulbs. Specifically, the Department of Energy will require that new light bulbs emit a minimum brightness of 45 lumens per watt, which will mean lights out for incandescent bulbs. The decision continues a Bush and Obama era policy to move away from less energy-efficient bulbs toward LED bulbs. But this transition was halted by former President Donald Trump, in whose administration David Kudlow served. “First of all, this is a lousy idea,” David Kudlow told anchors John Roberts and Sandra Smith, noting Trump’s fixation on household staples such as light bulbs, dishwashers, showerheads, and toilet bowls. “Trump said that incandescent light bulbs made him look better. He argued that strenuously. But, the point he was making, which I’m going to make in...
Screenshot via Instagram (Madison Cawthorn) Recent unflattering stories about Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) are part of a “coordinated drip campaign” by the “establishment” to end his fresh political career, he claimed in an Instagram video. Cawthorn warned his followers to expect an “attack article” every day or so as he comes up for reelection, and calling it political “shenanigans.” “We’re starting to get attacked by the political establishment,” said Cawthorn in his video, stressing that he does not make “any apologies” for what he does. Recent examples of such “attack articles” would likely be ones highlighting his comments in March claiming to have been invited to an orgy by a member of Congress, as well as witnessing others doing cocaine. Politico also released images of Cawthorn from a cruise wearing lingerie last week and he was recently cited for carrying a gun in an airport. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy met with Cawthorn after his cocaine and orgy comments and said Cawthorn changed his story and he had thus lost the party leader’s trust. Cawthorn did not specify in...

Sing along with me — 'I'm a little teapot, short and stout, and now scientists finally understand why I'm always dripping from my spout.' The bane of many a spotless tablecloth, the 'teapot effect' sees liquid dribble down the side of the pot when poured too slowly, rather than forming a detached flow. Physicists have been studying the phenomenon ever since it was first described in 1965 by Markus Reiner, who pioneered rheology, the study of flowing matter. But only now have a team led from the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) managed to develop a complete theoretical understanding of why the effect occurs. The key, they explained, lies in how a drop forms on the underside of the edge of the spout — one whose size is dependant on the speed at which tea is poured. If the speed falls below a critical threshold, the drop becomes large enough to direct the entire flow around the edge of the spout, causing it to dribble down the pot. Alongside modelling the effect, the researchers also filmed tea being poured at...

One of the House Democratic lawyers during the inquiry that led to former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment has called for a “criminal investigation” of Trump’s conduct leading up to the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. Daniel Goldman, who served as the counsel for the Democrats in the House Intelligence Committee and questioned witnesses who appeared before the committee during the 2019 impeachment inquiry against Trump, called for this move on Tuesday during Deadline: White House on MSNBC, where Goldman is now a legal analyst. This comes in the aftermath of former acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen telling the Senate Judiciary Committee on Saturday that Jeffrey Clark, who was serving as Trump’s top environment lawyer at the Department of Justice, tried to get the DOJ to call on Georgia to investigate its 2020 elections results for possible voter fraud. Goldman said that there should be both a congressional and criminal probe of Trump’s conduct ahead Jan. 6. “I think Congress needs to take a very close look at what happened because Congress can and should pass laws that provide...
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – We have now entered that dreaded period for gardeners across North Texas: when the summer turns hot and dry. North Texas weather is perfectly happy to go weeks at a time devoid of even a hint of rain and a relentless sun to bake the ground dry. READ MORE: Eviction Moratorium: What Happens To Renters When The CDC Ban Expires? Meanwhile, as the ground dries out, the temperatures really start to heat up. The stress on plants and trees starts to soar. There is another underlying problem that this kind of heat can expose: water supply. While the last few years have provided ample rains the last significant drought across North Texas reveled the inherent problem of having over seven million people living in an area of unsteady rain. North Texas has created dozens of man-made lakes to capture the (usual) surplus of spring rain and hold it over the (usual) dry summer. Since these lakes provide our water supply it is important to minimize our water used for landscaping. The most efficient way you can...

More On: brooklyn nets Celtics big now poses unexpected Nets test Nets’ biggest unknown turns into brightest star Nets must be prepared for anything in Game 2 Resilient Nets star shows he’s ready for playoff moments again The Celtics blocked 12 shots in their Game 1 loss to the Nets and Tristan Thompson was a meager contributor to the block party, with only one swat. A few days later, Thompson finally came up with a resounding rejection. He was one of the witnesses at Barclays Center to the three-pronged scoring machine assembled in Brooklyn for the expressed purpose of outgunning each and every opponent. The Big 3 of the Nets accounted for 79 percent of their points in a 104-93 playoff victory and it surely felt as if after one half of drip, drip, drip, a spigot was opened up and the Nets’ points came pouring out. As if, the Nets believed they could — and then proceeded to — turn it on when they needed to do so. “You said they’re playing with a swagger?” Celtics center Tristan...
There's an app for that. The story of Rep. Matt Gaetz is like one of those horror films that generates an extra large jolt of fear by first tossing up something that causes laughter. It’s clear that what Gaetz has done is genuinely criminal, and that the way his crimes were systematically ignored by Republicans at every level in both Florida and Washington, D.C. speaks to an incredible level of hypocrisy and corruption. On the other hand, the details are … ridiculous. For example, Gaetz has repeatedly put out statements saying that “Rep. Matt Gaetz has never paid for sex.” It turns out this may be true. Technically. Because as Daily Beast reports, records show that Gaetz only paid his friend Joel Greenberg. It was Greenberg who then actually paid for the sex. This is the kind of logic that’s certain to make heads nod on the couches of Fox & Friends. “See? Gaetz was telling the truth.” But to take this claim and turn the facepalm level to 11, it turns out that Gaetz paid Greenberg $900 using the cash app Venmo. Greenberg then...
Gaetz with Rep. John Ratcliffe and Rep. Jim Jordan. Gaetz asked for pardons not just for himself, but for 'congressional allies' In a self-serving op-ed published earlier this week, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz warned that there would be a “drip drip drip” of new information accusing him of various and sundry acts. It was a nice warning, though really not necessary. After all, Gaetz is nothing if not 300lbs of putrescence in a 200lb bag. There are going to be leaks.  What’s already been made clear is that Gaetz was deeply connected, for an extended period, with indicted sex trafficker Joel Greenberg. The two were apparently involved in manufacturing false IDs for underage girls. Gaetz bragged on Greenberg’s ability to secure women for sex. In turn, Gaetz also reportedly procured women for other Republican officials. Gaetz also had a proclivity for showing nude photos and videos of his supposed conquests to fellow Republicans in Congress. Meanwhile, his staff was sending more videos of Gaetz’s exploits to their counterparts around town. And all this videography followed Gaetz’s taking the lead in an attempt to...
BANGKOK (AP) — One of the leaders of Thailand’s pro-democracy movement was being administered an intravenous fluid drip in prison on Friday after officers said they found him weakened because of a hunger strike that has lasted longer than two weeks. Parit Chiwarak, 22, was charged in February with sedition and defaming the monarchy for his role in leading demonstrations. Parit’s lawyer requested bail for him and three others charged with the same offences, but the court denied it. Corrections officials at Pathumthani Detention Center north of Bangkok started giving Parit intravenous fluids last Saturday, a spokesperson from the Department of Corrections said. Parit was one of several leaders behind the protest movement that has campaigned since last year for Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and his government to step down. They want the constitution amended to make it more democratic and for the monarchy to be reformed to make it more accountable. The demand about the monarchy is the most radical and controversial, because the institution has been widely considered an untouchable, bedrock element of Thai nationalism. It has...
