On Tuesday, September 20, Gallup published its latest survey on approval for Joe Biden’s presidency. Biden, according to Gallup, now enjoys 42 percent approval, which is a 2 percent decline from the 44 percent approval he had in August but is better than the 38 percent approval he had in July’s Gallup survey. Biden’s less-than-stellar approval ratings have been discussed in countless articles on the 2022 midterms, but the devil is in the details. First, Biden has enjoyed higher approval ratings than House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, both of whom get reelected time and time again but are, according to pollsters, unpopular nationwide. Second, weak approval ratings aren’t necessarily a death sentence for a presidency; Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama all had weak approval ratings during parts of their first terms but enjoyed decisive reelection victories. In an article published by Newsweek on September 21, journalist Ewan Palmer emphasizes that Biden is, from an approval standpoint, where Reagan was ahead of the 1982 midterms. Arizona submitted the most impressive season-opening performance in the Pac-12, and we’re not sure it was even close given the state of the Wildcats’ program in recent years. Oregon State was superb Saturday night in a takedown of Boise State, but the Beavers went bowling last season. USC and UCLA rolled to victories, but both teams are expected to have quality seasons and were facing third-rate competition at home. The Wildcats, who were 1-16 the past two years, dominated San Diego State on the road one year after being embarrassed at home by the Aztecs. What’s the ceiling for Arizona in Year Two under coach Jedd Fisch? That’s anyone’s guess at this early stage. But we can at least define the bar. The Hotline examined every Pac-12 season since 1978, when the Arizona schools joined the conference, to identify teams that won less than two games. There are 18 of ’em across the decades. Then we charted how those 18 fared the following season to determine the greatest year-over-year improvement. Of note: Only three teams improved to at least five...
California Democrat Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who serves on the January 6 committee, told CNN’s Jim Acosta that Fox News not carrying the hearing live on Thursday was “cancel culture on steroids.” Rep. Lofgren joined Acosta Saturday to discuss the hearing, and during the interview the CNN anchor asked the congresswoman about the ratings from the hearing. “I know that you weren’t going for the ratings on Thursday night, but the Nielsen numbers have come in, and it’s been estimated that some 20 million Americans were watching the hearing, the very first hearing unfold on Thursday night,” said Acosta. “Of course that does not include Fox because Fox was not showing the hearing.” Whether the committee was going for the ratings per se or not, it’s certainly not the case that the number of viewers was an inconsequential consideration. The committee put the first hearing on live during prime time. It aired on multiple cable and broadcast networks simultaneously as well as on various streaming platforms, and was of course live on YouTube and being carried on social media. The committee...
TRUTH Social CEO and former GOP congressman Devin Nunes (R-CA) said Peter Navarro was arrested last week to help the Jan. 6 House select committee “boost ratings” for Thursday’s televised hearings. Navarro was arrested by the FBI at an airport in Tennessee. He was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday on two counts of contempt of Congress. The Department of Justice arrested him, citing his “failure to comply with a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 breach of the United States Capitol.” Navarro has repeatedly said he cannot discuss the 2020 election with lawmakers. He argues doing so would violate executive privilege he claims he’s bound to from his time as a top advisor to former President Donald Trump. Nazarro’s claims of executive privilege have already been denied. He faces jail time if he is convicted. On Newsmax TV’s The Balance Monday, Nunes told host Eric Bolling that Navarro’s arrest was political. Bolling equated the committee’s investigation to a “witch hunt.” He noted former ABC News James Goldston has been tapped to produce the committee’s Thursday...
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has often been spotted with celebrities during his troubled first year in office and now he's claiming he was with comedian Dave Chappelle after he was attacked at his own standup show.  Adams, 61, paid for the trip out of campaign funds after attending the ritzy Met Gala in New York on Monday, according to staffers and spent two days in Southern California. On Wednesday, Adams participated in a panel at the Milken Institute Global Conference on 'digital transformation' before heading to the local Museum of Tolerance to celebrate Israel's independence day.  On Tuesday, however, Adams said he was at Chappelle's show, when a man stormed the stage while Chappelle joked that he'd had to increase his security in light of his trans jokes at the Netflix is a Joke festival.  The attacker - 23-year-old Isiah Lee - was armed with a gun that contained a hidden knife, according to the cops. It's unclear if he was searched on his way into the venue, or how he was able to gain access to the...
ARSENAL'S Champions League hopes took a major boost with three precious points against top-four rivals Wolves. And a 96th-minute own goal by Jose Sa sparked chaotic scenes in North London. Here's how SunSport's Joshua Jones rated Mikel Arteta's men... Aaron Ramsdale - 5 Got away with one early on, slow to react before the flag went up against Romain Saiss who beat the goalkeeper to the ball and bundled in. Then was beaten to the ball and rounded for Hwang's goal but did enough to divert his effort wide of the post at the start of the second half. Cedric Soares - 4 Given another run out as Takehiro Tomiyasu...
MANCHESTER UNITED escaped with a draw at Atletico Madrid thanks to Anthony Elanga. Joao Felix put the Spaniards ahead early on with a header in the first-leg of the Champions League last-16 tie. 1Victor Lindelof suffered a difficult evening against the pace of Renan LodiCredit: EPA But after being given the runaround in the first half, United battled back in the second and managed to level it with ten minutes to go thanks to the 19-year-old substitute. Here's how Gary Stonehouse rated each of the United men on display in the Spanish capital: DE GEA - 6 Could have had Dean Henderson in goal with him and the pair still wouldn’t have stopped Joao Felix’s header. Did not have much else to do despite Atletico’s dominance. LINDELOF - 4 Was the surprise choice at right-back in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot and made a great sliding challenge to deny Jose Luis Gimenez early on. After a bright start, he then began to struggle to stop impressive wing-back Renan Lodi and would have been thankful to hear the half...
NASCAR's unusual Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, held on a temporary track built inside the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, achieved its goal of getting eyes on the sport. The 2.56 million viewers who tuned in for qualifying was the most since the 2016 Daytona 500 and the highest-rated non-Daytona qualifying event in at least 20 years, according to Fox Sports Executive Vice President Michael Mulvihill. (CNN)President Joe Biden's administration turned 1 year old on Thursday. He entered the White House by beating a historically unpopular president in Donald Trump. And while Biden started with a lot of promise in public polling data, the results now are anything but good. The President finds himself in a popularity hole as he begins year two of his presidency, and his party is likely to suffer in the midterm elections if things do not turn around. Start out by just looking at his overall job approval ratings. Biden has an approval rating of only about 41% and a disapproval rating of 54% in an average of polls. This makes for a net approval rating of -13 points. Biden's poor ratings are quite a turnaround from where he was earlier. In the middle of September, his net approval rating was -3 points. Biden stood at +11 points in the middle of May. His first net approval rating of his presidency was +19 points. No elected president in the polling era besides Trump has ever had a negative net approval at...
AMERICAN Pickers season 23 premiere ratings have dropped with Mike Wolfe and his brother Robbie as hosts after Frank Fritz was fired.  Season 23 of American Pickers premiered on Saturday, January 1 with Mike, 57 and new host Robbie.  4Ratings for the Season 23 premiere have dropped compared to previous seasons 4Fan favorite and original host Frank Fritz was fired from the seriesCredit: Coleman-Rayner The Sun can exclusively reveal that even though ratings were still above 1 million viewers, the numbers dropped compared to previous seasons. A former news producer who accused Chris Cuomo of sexual harassment has dismissed CNN's internal investigation into the anchor's support for his beleaguered brother - while the network has seen ratings soar since their star talking head was suspended. Cuomo, 51, was placed on an indefinite suspension on Tuesday - a day after the New York attorney general published damaging information. The documents on Monday showed that Cuomo was far more involved than he had admitted to viewers and CNN executives in helping his brother, Governor Andrew Cuomo, defend himself from accusations of sexual harassment and assault. Chris Cuomo insisted the assistance was minimal, yet text messages published by the attorney general showed him deeply involved in strategy - seeking information on the accusers, looking for early warning of any new allegations, and crafting his brother's statements. Shelley Ross, who in September accused Chris of grabbing her buttocks in 2005, said on Friday that CNN's internal investigation was insufficient. 'Only an outside team of professionals can stop malicious, neglectful, or consciously wrong behavior by those who engage in it or...

Here is how SunSport rated Manchester United's players at Stamford Bridge. David de Gea - 7/10 The Spanish goalkeeper had a busy afternoon with Chelsea pressing for most of the game. Made a few smart saves and commanded his area well - like the De Gea of old. Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 4 Reckless tackle to gift Chelsea a penalty and relinquish Manchester United's lead with 20 minutes to go. Chelsea were struggling to create chances before his rash lunge on Thiago Silva gave Jorginho the chance to level from the spot. Victor Lindelof - 6 Led the back line pretty well in the absence of captain Harry Maguire. Helped by...

VIDEO2:5002:50The key factor last night was Biden's low ratings, says Larry SabatoThe News with Shepard Smith Political expert Larry Sabato pointed to President Joe Biden's low ratings as the primary reason that Glenn Youngkin flipped the Virginia governorship to Republican control. "My take is that the key factor was, in fact, President Biden's low ratings," said Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "You can't avoid it. I can't see how anyone can deny that...That's what it's about, it's not just about his agenda." Biden won Virginia by ten points, and former Gov. Terry McAuliffe held a steady lead in the polls, but it disappeared as election day approached.  When asked about Democrats' upset in the commonwealth, Biden said the defeat showed that his party needs to pass some of his agenda before midterms.   "People want us to get things done," Biden said. "They want us to get things done. And that's why I'm continuing to push very hard for the Democratic Party to move along and pass my infrastructure bill and my Build Back Better bill."...

Saturday Night Live's Season 47 premiere with first-time host Owen Wilson has been ranked as the lowest-rated episode in the show's nearly five decade run.  According to Nielsen, the episode is now the lowest-ranked episode among the show's key demographic - adults between 18-49. Wilson's episode also recorded the least amount of viewers for a season premiere the show has ever aired.  The Season 47 premiere scored a 0.92 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 4.9 million total viewers, meaning that just .92% of that group watched the show, according to Nielsen.  Nielsen ratings are determined using statistical sampling to determine what percentage of all households in that demographic watched the show.   Keegan-Michael Key’s episode, which aired on May 15, now holds the second spot for low-ratings with a 0.93 rating, meaning that just .93% of that group watched the show.  The record for the episode with the all-time fewest viewers is still held by Scarlett Johansson, but that was not a season premiere. Gretchen Carlson's attempt to rebrand Miss America for the MeToo age backfired because the contestants still wanted to show off their bodies, a new book reveals. The former Fox News host banned the swimsuit round in 2018 as part of a 'nuclear option reboot' to make the pageant relevant again. Carlson had been installed as chief executive of the Miss America Organization after former Miss Americas staged a takeover in the wake of MeToo. But Carlson, the Miss America 1989 who had recently settled a sexual harassment lawsuit against former Fox News boss Roger Ailes, angered the pageant community with ideas like axing the evening gown contest and letting women appear in work clothes instead. The reigning 2018 Miss America, Cara Mund, accused Carlson of bullying her and claimed that the 'old-time princess sensibility' she adored wasn't considered to be woke enough. According to There She Was: The Secret History of Miss America by Amy Argetsinger, an editor with the Washington Post Style section, ratings plummeted and critics said the new pageant was boring. Gretchen Carlson became chief executive...

New York (CNN Business)The Tokyo Olympics officially kicked off this weekend, and on the face of it, the ratings for Friday's opening ceremony looked like a flop. According to early numbers, only 17 million people watched the opening ceremony on TV in the US. That's down a sharp 36% from the Rio 2016 ceremony, which was itself the lowest rated since 1992. Ratings for the latest series premiere of the ABC dating show The Bachelorette have tanked following the exit of the show’s longtime host Chris Harrison, whom the cancel mob accused of racism after he defended a contestant who attended a sorority event featuring antebellum-style ball gowns. The show returned to ABC without Harrison (replaced by series alums Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe), but it garnered the lowest premiere in the series’ history, according to Deadline: Although the Season 17 premiere bowed to 3.59M viewers and a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic, per early Nielsen Live+Same Day numbers, it marked the lowest premiere in the series’ history. The top-rated program in the 8-10 p.m. time slot, The Bachelorette premiere fell from its previous bow in October 2020 (4.76M, 1.3) by 24% in viewers and four-tenths in rating. The controversy struck earlier this year after Harrison defended a contestant, Rachael Kirkconnell, who years ago participated in a sorority event featuring Southern Belle-style ball gowns, which the left quickly deemed as racist “because they emulate the dress fashion that evokes traditional, pre-Civil War era plantation gowns.” “I saw a picture...

The decision by "Saturday Night Live" to bring on controversial host Elon Musk paid off for the popular sketch series, sending ratings skyrocketing.  The SpaceX and Tesla founder being tapped for the coveted hosting position sparked controversy among both viewers and cast members, many of whom felt the show was celebrating a man for his exorbitant wealth in a time of income inequality. Rumors even circulated that cast members were considering not appearing in the episode with him. However, it seems the controversy didn't dampen anyone's desire to see what Musk would do. In fact, it seems it heightened attention on the show. Last weekend's episode averaged 7.3 million viewers, making it the third most-watched episode for the season behind the ones hosted by Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock, according to Nielsen figures. A good outcome for the billionaire's first time hosting "SNL," although reviews of his attempts at comedy ranged from charitable to meh. ‘Girls5eva’: TV Review Fact check: COVID-19 vaccines don’t cause death, won’t decimate world’s population As the sports calendar resumes its regular routines and America slowly returns to its pre-pandemic state, it's becoming more clear that, from a ratings perspective, 2020 was an extreme outlier.  The NFL draft aired in its usual time slot, but 2020's draft was a remarkable one-time event: the first live sporting-adjacent event since the start of the pandemic. That draft drew a remarkable 15.5 million viewers on Day 1, but that figure was sharply boosted because there was literally nothing else for sports fans to watch.  As a result, 2021's Day 1 total didn't match that figure, though with 12.6 million viewers on Day 1, this year ranked as the second-highest Day 1 on record, according to the NFL. The draft aired on ABC, ESPN, NFL Network, ESPN Deportes and digital outlets. The draft's Day 1 ratings were up 11 percent overall over 2019, and digital streaming was up 54 percent over 2019.  The Kentucky Derby returned to its customary slot in the first weekend...

Embattled New York Governor Andrew Cuomo obsessively wanted to know what the ratings for his daily TV briefings were during the pandemic, according to former aides and sources who have shared more claims about his brash and attention-seeking leadership style.  Cuomo is facing mounting calls to step down amid a landslide of allegations of sexual harassment, bullying and racism. He is also facing tough criticism of his handling of the number of nursing home deaths that happened across the state as a result of COVID-19.  The 63-year-old governor is refusing to step down and instead has vowed to carry on serving, saying he is the best person for the job.  On Monday, he refused to take questions from the media and didn't even invite them to his public appearance at a vaccine site where he announced he was going to get the Johnson and Johnson vaccine soon.   As the walls close in around him, more and more aides are speaking out anonymously to share details of what kind of boss he is.  In a New York Times article published on...
PIERS Morgan’s dramatic exit from Good Morning Britain comes some seven years after CNN bosses pulled the plug on his prime time talk show due to low ratings. Three years after the TV host launched Piers Morgan Live, he was told by the American broadcasting network’s president that it was “time for the show to end”. ???? Piers Morgan’s CNN show Piers Morgan Live was pulled from air in 2014 due to falling ratings. Morgan took over the slot from broadcasting veteran Larry King in January 2011. While the show started off with respectable ratings, audience figures soon dropped, with some media outlets reporting that the British host failed to connect with an American audience. Morgan struggled to match the ratings garnered by his predecessor, the Guardian reported. By February 2014, viewership dropped to the lowest seen since he took over from King. The...
Oprah Winfrey has landed another crowning achievement. The longtime talk show host’s Sunday night interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was a ratings hit, pulling in 17.1 million viewers. That includes an admirable 2.6 rating among the coveted demographic of adults aged 18 to 49, according to CBS. By comparison, that’s more than double the ratings of this year’s Golden Globes on NBC. The show brought the largest primetime audience for an entertainment special since the 2020 Oscars. The much-anticipated two-hour interview on CBS brought an avalanche of revelations, not to mention plenty of potential for royal fallout. The exposé with the couple — who currently live in a nine-bedroom $14.6 million Montecito mansion — revealed plenty of palace intrigue, including the startling revelation that Markle contemplated suicide due to the pressure she faced. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she told Winfrey. Viewers who tuned in also found out that someone in the royal ranks shared with Prince Harry their “concerns” about their then-unborn son Archie’s mixed race and how dark his skin might...

Meghan McCain has been back to work at The View barely a week since returning from maternity leave and it's already off to a rough start, as the Republican realizes she 'doesn't have the job security that she once did,' sources exclusively claimed to DailyMail.com. The talk show's resident conservative returned to work on Monday after giving birth to her first child, daughter Liberty Sage, in September and being hospitalized with eclampsia. But the time away didn't do much to cool the prior tension she had with co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, getting into a heated spat with Behar on Tuesday. The 36-year-old interrupted Behar while she was explaining why the Republican party was facing trouble following the 2020 election, ending with Behar, 78, telling McCain point blank that she did not miss her while she was on maternity leave. The next day, the antics continued when McCain kept pressing Georgia Senator-elect Raphael Warnock on a question, leading Goldberg to snap 'hey listen' at her, before tossing to commercial. The incident had McCain rattled for a good portion of...

I haven’t seen a horror film since I was nine years old. That’s when Steven Spielberg and Jack Valenti scarred me for life. Spielberg was responsible for 1982’s Poltergeist; Valenti was responsible for the Motion Picture Association of America. And both are responsible for turning Poltergeist, a haunted-house horror masterpiece (I’ll grant it that) from a unanimously-rated R to a PG on appeal. This was before PG-13 ratings, a period well documented in pop culture. Except very little of it mentions Poltergeist. Films like Red Dawn (the first PG-13), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Gremlins are more considered the rating’s spiritual ancestors. But Poltergeist made it necessary. In Connie Bruck’s 2001 profile of Valenti in The New Yorker, Spielberg, after haranguing the MPAA over Poltergeist’s rating, is said to have promised Richard Heffner, chairman of the ratings board to “get that for you.” He meant the creation of PG-13, or some rating between PG and R. To me, that’s evidence enough that Spielberg knew Poltergeist was no PG movie — which in 1982 was basically taken as...
New York (CNN Business)More than 65 million people watched the first debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden Tuesday night. The television audience for the debate was down from the first debate between Trump and Hillary Clinton in 2016. One possible reason: The cringeworthy nature of Trump's conduct. Many critics said afterward that it was the worst debate in modern American history.Preliminary Nielsen ratings showed an average audience of roughly 64.7 million viewers across eight channels for the entirety of Tuesday's prime time event. The preliminary ratings only count Americans who watched at home on television. An unknown number of people live-streamed the debate on the internet, listened on the radio, and watched in other ways, which means the total audience easily surpassed 65 million.Finalized Nielsen TV ratings figures are set to be released later in the day on Wednesday.
