As September draws to a close, Hollywood is already gearing up for the awards season. This week, we take a look at a stunning new dystopian feature, a great reboot of a PI series, Zac Efron’s latest, a “Munsters” reboot, a documentary on Sidney Poitier and and a piercing comedy/drama featuring an outstanding performance from Sigourney Weaver. Here’s our roundup. “Vesper”: The post-apocalyptic genre is more prevalent and relevant today with most entries hinging on climate change and bumming us out long afterwards. While there is room and a need for that, the relentless bleakness can get a bit much. Enter the brilliantly imagined and realized “Vesper,” which unearths compassion and kindness amid a wretched ecological collapse that finds the “haves” holed up in safe environs while the “have nots” suffer in a hostile land of genetic new creations. When 13-year-old Vesper (Raffiella Chapman) finds and harbors Camelia (Rosy McEwen) who fell from the sky and is now a stranger in this strange land, others take an interest. Directors Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper have created a world filled with...

Half of America’s dogs come running just from the sound of a treat bag, new research suggests. According to a recent poll of 2,000 dog owners, 47 percent said that their dog reacts instinctively to the noise made when a treat container is opened. 1According to those polled, the average dog knows an average of five spoken commandsCredit: Getty Fifty-two percent are also likely to run over when they hear words like “treat” or “cookie,” while only 37 percent consistently respond to the sound of their own name. Reported by OnePoll on behalf of CLIF PET™, the results further confirm that 67 percent of dogs are “very food motivated.” Four in ten respondents give their dogs treats as a way to reward them, making it the most popular reason among those polled. Getty Grant Williams, Boston Celtics The Boston Celtics benefitted from numerous members of their roster taking a developmental jump last season. Jayson Tatum went from All-Star to All-NBA, Jaylen Brown operated at an All-Star level but struggled with injuries to begin the year, Al Horford rolled back the clock, and Robert Williams became one of the most dominant centers in the entire league. However, no one took a jump like Grant Williams – who went from struggling bench player to elite three-and-d wing/forward in the space of a summer. Yet, an Eastern Conference coach, who spoke to Heavy.com’s Sean Deveney under the condition of anonymity, believes there is still one glaring weakness that is holding Williams back from reaching the level of other smaller wings like Draymond Green: his passing. I've said this a bunch through the week, but Grant Williams being trusted to switch onto Kyrie and KD on the perimeter – and limiting those guys – speak volumes to his development since last season — Adam Taylor (@AdamTaylorNBA) April 24, 2022 “Passing is one. MARTINEZ — A Contra Costa jury has begun deliberating the fate of an Antioch man accused of hiding in bushes to ambush and kill a 47-year-old man who tried to identify his killer before he died. Darrin “Mississippi” Lynch, 54, is charged with murdering Andrew McCoy, of Pittsburg, in the May 6, 2019 shooting on Shoreline Drive in Pittsburg. Prosecutors contend that GPS evidence from Lynch’s phone, surveillance video nearby the shooting scene, and witness testimony identifies Lynch and McCoy’s killer. Lynch’s attorney, meanwhile, argued to jurors it was impossible to tell who killed McCoy, that two key witnesses are “liars” who were “spoon fed” stories by police, and that the electronic evidence is more complicated than prosecutors make it seem. “If you want to get justice for Andy McCoy, then do right by Darrin Lynch…Tell the police, ‘Get the right guy,'” Lynch’s attorney, Austin Thompson, told jurors Monday. Deputy district attorney Jennifer Tompkins told jurors that GPS records show Lynch travelled from downtown Pittsburg to the shooting scene, at the same time that surveillance video shows a man with...
