With runners on second and third and two outs in the top of the 11th inning of Tuesday night’s marathon on the South Side, the few thousand fans remaining began shouting unsolicited advice to Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck has warned that the situation is going to be "really tight in winter" without precautionary measures to prevent a supply shortage.Ina Fassbender | Afp | Getty Images Reduced flows of Russian gas and the specter of a full supply disruption have prompted some European governments to reconsider coal, one of the dirtiest and most polluting ways of producing energy. It has stoked fears that the energy crisis could see Europe delay its transition away from fossil fuels, although policymakers insist the burning of coal is a necessary stopgap to help prevent a winter supply shortage. Coal is the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel in terms of emissions and therefore the most important target for replacement in the pivot to alternative energy sources. However, Germany, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands have all indicated that coal-fired plants could be used to compensate for a cut in Russian gas supplies. There was perfume, amber-heavy, and it made my apartment smell rich and a little cheap all at once.  Veronica came to America as a teenager in the early 1990s. Her family had been trickling into the United States piecemeal for a few years until finally, it was her turn to make the trip.  Months after our first meeting, we sat on my stoop eating popsicles as she told me about her life “back home” and why she left. It was hard economically and socially. And it didn’t help that she was a “little gay boy” surrounded by devout Catholics who just couldn’t understand why she wasn’t like any of her macho older brothers. She...
CINCINNATI (AP) — On the same date that he reached 10 years of major league service, the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday designated for assignment two-time All-Star outfielder Lorenzo Cain. Cain, 36, hit .179 with one home run and nine RBIs over 43 games this season. “It just got to a point where it’s probably time,” Cain told a small group of Brewers’ beat writers. “I haven’t been performing like I would’ve liked, but the situation is what it is. I’ve had a great career. I can’t really be upset about anything, but, yeah, it’s time. I wish all my teammates the best, coaches, trainers, everybody that I’ve played with or met throughout my entire career, I wish them nothing but the best. It’s been a really fun ride for me for sure.” Cain is in the last year of a five-year, $80 million contract he signed in January 2018 as a free agent. Milwaukee is responsible for the $10,897,121 remaining of this season’s $18 million salary. He is unlikely to be claimed off waivers because of his salary. If he...

Developer Rick Caruso’s showing in the mayoral primary Tuesday demonstrated that a significant number of Angelenos want quick and immediate changes on homelessness and aren’t turned off by the vast fortune of a billionaire who has never held elected office. Caruso will face Rep. Karen Bass in the general election after the two candidates topped the field. In initial results, Caruso was leading Bass, 42% to 37%, on Wednesday. Both Democratic and Republican voters in Tuesday’s election backed the developer, a onetime Republican who jumped in the race just four months ago and is seeking big changes in how City Hall is run. He has proposed, for instance, removing all land use decisions from the City Council to deter corruption. California L.A. mayor’s race: Rick Caruso, Karen Bass headed to November runoff Billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso holds a narrow lead over U.S. Rep. Karen Bass in the race to replace Mayor Eric Garcetti. Tuesday’s results showed that his campaign — which tapped his own wealth and relied on an unprecedented $40 million in spending...
Getty Ben Simmons #10 of the Brooklyn Nets makes his way to the bench right before the start of the game against the Philadelphia 76ers Since the Brooklyn Nets were eliminated from the Eastern Conference Playoffs in early May, fans have heard all kinds of transaction rumors for the upcoming offseason. Ben Simmons has been traded to at least half a dozen teams, and so has Kyrie Irving. Some of the trades are backed by sources like NBA executives saying that a trade involving Kyrie Irving and the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Russell Westbrook “makes sense.” Vegas odds have the Los Angeles Clippers to be the most likely team to end up with Irving this offseason. Others seem to be created by one’s imagination, like Ben Simmons in exchange for Rudy Gobert. While it may be unlikely, it is still fun to talk about.  But all of this is fatiguing. It is easy to dream and imagine how a trade would change your favorite franchise’s fate, but if it doesn’t feel like a real possibility, it becomes annoying. One Nets fan...
For the past several weeks, social media has been flooded with two faces: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s international fanbase has taken full advantage of a courtroom livestream with memes that revel in Heard’s every twisted expression—and influencers have even staged “comedic” re-enactments in the name of clout-chasing. Apart from a few stalwarts like Winona Ryder, Paul Bettany, and Kate Moss, who testified on his behalf, celebrity support for Depp has been muted—literally, it seems. A-list Twitter stayed mostly silent Wednesday, when a Circuit Court in Fairfax County, Virginia, ruled that Heard was liable for defaming Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. (The court also ruled in favor of one of Heard’s counterclaims against Depp, whose attorney at one point called her allegations a “hoax.”) The jury awarded Depp damages totaling $15 million ($10.35 million due to a state cap in punitive damages), and Heard is set to receive $2 million. While the celebs were not necessarily making a show out of posting #JusticeForJohnnyDepp on social media Wednesday, a surprising number of...
A top Republican senator is demanding that the leaders of the Department of Justice and FBI investigate whether a top bureau official in the nation’s capital violated DOJ guidelines through partisan posts on social media. Timothy Thibault, FBI assistant special agent in charge and leader at the Washington field office handling public corruption matters and other criminal investigations, “likely violated several federal regulations and Department guidelines designed to prevent political bias from infecting FBI matters, including the Attorney General Guidelines for Domestic FBI Operations and FBI social media policies," Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said Tuesday. Grassley sent letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray that set a preliminary deadline of June 14 for them to share documents related to Thibault, including investigations he has supervised since 2015. Grassley also called on DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz to investigate, pointing to a number of DOJ rules and regulations, including FBI guidelines on social media use. SUSSMANN FOUND NOT GUILTY IN BLOW TO JOHN DURHAM'S INVESTIGATION Thibault’s purported LinkedIn account states that he...

Dear Amy: I have been in a 20-year relationship with a wonderful man who has been there for me, through thick and thin. Amy Dickinson  We raised my children together and are now enjoying our grandchildren. I have been very unhappy in the relationship for the last few years because I’ve fallen out of love with him. I don’t want to have the grandbabies lose out on a wonderful grandfather because he will leave the country if we split up, but I want to be happy, too. I’ve always liked women, but I didn’t want my mother to take my children away from me if I lived my true self, so when I met him, and we decided to get together, I honestly wanted to grow old with him. Now my children are grown, and I feel like I deserve to be happy. I just don’t want to break a good man’s heart. How can I have both things that I want? – Lost in the Closet Dear Lost: You may not be able to have everything you want. Because...
(CNN)Ancient poop found at the site of a prehistoric village near Stonehenge revealed that the settlement's inhabitants -- who likely built the stone circle -- feasted on the internal organs of cattle.Several pieces of fossilized poop, which scientists call coprolites, were unearthed from a refuse heap at a settlement known as Durrington Walls, just 1.7 miles (2.8 kilometers) from Stonehenge. The village dates back to around 2500 BC, when much of the imposing monument in southwest England was constructed.Five pieces of poop -- from one human and four dogs -- were found to contain the eggs of parasitic worms. Ancient human poop was unearthed from Durrington Walls, a prehistoric village near Stonhenge. The human poop and three of the dog coprolites contained the eggs of capillariid worms, identified in part by their lemon shape. The presence of this type of worm indicated that the person had eaten the raw or undercooked lungs or liver from an already infected animal, which would result in the parasite's eggs passing straight through the digestive system, according to a new study on the...

Names he had previously agreed were cute. Posting to Reddit the anonymous man wrote: “A few months ago I (25) and my wife Kaylie (22) discovered we were having twins. Obviously we’ve been over the moon about this and already prepared nurseries etc. for our beautiful girls, and talked a lot about names and such. “Kaylie suggested the names Bella and Sara, and even though they’re pretty common ones I do like them and it didn’t fall into the matching categories, or at least I thought that.” However, his opinion on the names was quick to change after...
Disturbing audio has emerged of a phonecall between a Russian machine gunner and his mother who took great pleasure in laughing about the torture and murder of Ukrainian civilians. The call, intercepted and published by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine's Ministry of Defence, was shared by a soldier of Russia's 11th Army Corps - identified as Konstantin Solovyov - and his mother Tatiana Solovyova. After a brief exchange of small talk and jokes about taking food from local villagers near Kharkiv, Solovyov quickly begins describing, in graphic detail, a variety of heinous torture methods used by members of Russia's security service (FSB). Some of the tactics included the '21 roses' - stripping the skin back from a man's fingers, toes and penis like the petals of a flower - and the 'barrel' method, when a line of barbed wire is inserted into a prisoner's anus via a tube before being slowly and painstakingly ripped back out.  Solovyov, whose unit is deployed near the eastern front in Kharkiv according to Ukraine's MoD, also explained how he and his colleagues in the FSB...
