LOS ANGELES — The Giants may be out of the playoff hunt, but with a month of the season to go, manager Gabe Kapler is taking the opportunity to remind his players that the remaining games matter, nonetheless. “Every individual has something on the line and at stake,” Kapler said. “I think there’s a way to finish strong for us that will create a really good springboard for ‘23 and I think we’re all focused and taking that seriously.” As a team, the Giants’ goals in September should include fending off Arizona for third place in the NL West and finishing the season at or above .500. They would need to go 17-13 over their final 30 games, starting Monday night at Dodger Stadium, to reach 81 wins. For individual players, it might be money, playing time, personal accolades or some combination of the three. Joey Bart: Set to return Tuesday from a concussion, Bart will spend the final month of the season cementing the changes that have led to his turnaround at the plate. Since returning July 6 from...
For decades, the greatest threat to world peace was that we lived in a bipolar world. Today it may be that that world is dominated by a bipolar superpower. The latest example of America’s split personality is the progress that is currently being made toward reviving the deal to freeze Iran’s nuclear program. Don’t get me wrong; getting this deal restarted is a good thing by any measure. (You can tell because the Israelis are against it and they have been wrong about this deal since Day One.) But the still-prospective agreement illustrates a phenomenon that is very troubling to both our allies and our enemies—and which also came up in the discussions with the Iranians. The U.S. was a driving force behind the multi-national effort to freeze Iran’s nuclear program (during the Obama years) before it unilaterally pulled out of it (under Trump). In renegotiating the agreement, a common Iranian question—and one heard behind the scenes from our allies—was: “How long will the Biden administration’s support for striking a deal last?” And will Donald Trump (or a Trump-like...
There’s still plenty to prove for the A’s over their final 50 games of the season. Things have gone pretty much as expected after the franchise was stripped of most of its star power once the lockout ended with a series of trades intended to fortify Oakland’s latest rebuilding effort. The A’s are 41-71 heading into Friday’s opener of a three-game series against the first-place Houston Astros and are on pace to lose 100 games for just the second time since they moved to Oakland. It hasn’t been just one area of concern: the team ranks toward the bottom of the league in most hitting, pitching and fielding categories. Despite a 14-12 June, their only winning month this season, the A’s are 2-6 in August and just lost five straight at home. Some of the struggles can be attributed to youth. The team has already set an A’s record by using 24 rookies. The 14 rookie pitchers also is an Oakland record. It has also already used 52 players and will almost certainly break the franchise record of 54 before...

President Joe Biden said voters had given politicians a clear order in Tuesday night's ballots: It is time to act on crime and gun violence. He spoke to reporters on Wednesday before boarding Air Force One to fly to California, stumbling on the steps as he did so. He left after two closely watched votes in California showed how voters were prioritizing rising crime - in San Francisco, where the city's liberal district attorney was recalled and in Los Angeles were a tough-on-crime Republican finished ahead of a progressive Democrat in the race to be mayor. 'The voters sent a clear message last night,' said Biden. 'Both parties have to step up and do something about crime as well as gun violence.' He added that states and cities must hire more officers and reform police departments. 'The first major bill we passed ... we gave the states and localities billions of dollars, billions of dollars and then encouraged them to use it to hire police officers and reform the police department,' he said. 'Very few have done it.' President Joe...
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tennessee arrived in Indianapolis with a single focus and little interest in continuing the seeding debate. Of course the Volunteers want to show the NCAA selection committee the Southeastern Conference tourney champs warrant a higher seed than No. 3 in the South Region. Yet, players had a steely-eyed vision on a new mission when they arrived Wednesday — winning a first-round game for the third time in five years and reaching a Final Four for first time in school history. “It was good to see us set a goal to win the SEC Tournament and achieve that goal, but we also had a goal at the beginning of the year to win games in March, to get to the Final Four and win a national championship,” Josiah-Jordan James said. “It starts with Longwood.” The 14th-seeded Lancers (26-6), from the small town of Farmville, Virginia, are making their first tourney appearance. Thursday’s winner faces either sixth-seeded Colorado State (25-5) or 11th-seeded Michigan (17-14), which play in the day’s first game. Still, the orange-and-white clad fans who made the...
Stanford’s 2021 NCAA championship game win over Arizona was everything Haley Jones could have hoped for. Well, except for one thing — the game itself was far from the Cardinal’s finest performance. “Whenever we think about the Final Four, we’re like, ‘That wasn’t even very good basketball for us,’” Jones said. “Luckily we won and it shows we were able to grind it out, because I don’t think it was a pretty game for either team.” On Sunday, Stanford (14-3, 5-0) hosts Arizona for the first time since the title game, which ended 54-53 and featured 21 turnovers by the Cardinal and 28 percent shooting by the Wildcats. “When I re-watch the game, I’m like, ‘How did we pull it out?’” Jones said. “Our offense was not sharp, we had so many turnovers we usually don’t make, so many defensive breakdowns. It was just ugly.” It wasn’t for a lack of effort. But a familiar opponent, huge spotlight, the grind of a pandemic-affected season—whatever the reason, the final was dramatic, but it wasn’t a classic. ...
Tulsa (3-5, 2-2 AAC) at No. 2 Cincinnati (8-0, 4-0, No. 6 CFP), Saturday at 3:30 EDT (ESPN). Line: Cincinnati by 23 1/2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Series record: Tulsa leads 17-16-2. WHAT’S AT STAKE? Cincinnati was ranked No. 6 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings despite a signature win at No. 10 Notre Dame. The Bearcats feel like they have something to prove, and that starts Saturday against Tulsa. Cincinnati insists that winning an American Conference championship is the top goal. Tulsa, meanwhile, will be looking to exact some revenge after losing to the Bearcats on a last-second field goal in last year’s American Conference championship game. KEY MATCHUP Cincinnati has one of the nation’s top pass defenses, ranking first in opponent completion percentage (50.8) with 14 interceptions. Tulsa quarterback Davis Brin completes close to 58% of his passes, but he also has 11 interceptions. Limiting mistakes will be key for Brin if Tulsa is going to have success against a talented Bearcats secondary. PLAYERS TO WATCH Tulsa: Brin has passed for 2,095 yards and 11...
Getty Kamaru Usman & Canelo Alvarez Reigning UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is the No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the promotion, and he’s ready for a clash with boxing’s No. 1, Canelo Alvarez. Canelo is set to box Caleb Plant for all four major super-middleweight boxing titles on November 6, 2021. And on the same night, Usman will look to defend his 170-pound title against No. 1-ranked contender Colby Covington at UFC 268. Both Canelo and “The Nigerian Nightmare” only have one loss on each of their respective records, and they’re currently at the height of their careers. And during the UFC 268 media day, Usman shared his interest in boxing Canelo. A win over the Mexican inside a boxing ring would further cement Usman as one of the greatest fighters ever. “Since when have we ever seen the pound-for-pound mixed martial artist go up against the pound-for-pound boxer, both in their prime, not when they’re older or retired and you’re trying to pull them back. Both in their prime,” Usman said. ‘That’s what I’m looking to do....
The Canadian professor who claimed to be of Indigenous descent but was outed by her sister and colleagues as being Eastern European and put on leave from her university continues to self-identify as a member of three tribes.  Carrie Bourassa, the scientific director of the Institute of Indigenous Peoples' Health for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, has claimed to be of the Métis, Anishinaabe and Tlingit tribes without ever actually presenting proof, only self-identifying.   Bourassa, or Morning Star Bear's, colleagues and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation investigated and failed to find any Indigenous relatives, and her sister, Jody Burnett said Bourassa's 'description of our family is inaccurate, not rooted in fact and moreover is irrelevant to the issue of whether or not [she] is Métis.'  But Bourassa, who was placed on leave from the University of Saskatchewan, said in a statement that there is no need provide proof to her claims, and accused investigations into her heritage as going against the customs of her tribe.  'It is apparent that I must adhere to Western ideologies, such as blood quantum, to...
Jamie Foxx Says He Is Not the Marrying Type in New Book: Maybe in a Few Decades Brazil Markets Sink on Fears Social Aid to Break Fiscal Rule LAS VEGAS — The middleweight bout on Saturday at Apex between No. 2 Paulo Costa and No. 5 Marvin Vettori figures to be a fan-friendly bout. The more fan-friendly you believe it will be, though, figures to influence who you believe will win the fight. Both men are coming off title fight losses to champion Israel Adesanya. Costa was stopped late in the second round in Abu Dhabi by Adesanya at UFC 253. Vettori dropped a five-round decision to Adesanya at UFC 263 in June. Vettori has fought three times since Costa has last been in the cage. And Costa, frankly, did not look good against Adesanya. He appeared to break mentally under the pressure and was dominated by the champion. If you look at the Costa prior to the Adesanya fight, you see one of the most dangerous men in the UFC. He was 13-0 with 11 knockouts and one...
(CNN)"All the applause," Randy Newman sang, "all the parades, and all the money I have made. Oh, it's lonely at the top." The 1972 tune captured, partly in fun, the downside of success. What it did not reckon with, though, was how lonely it could be in the middle too. Take President Joe Biden. He has been walking a tightrope, trying to please both the progressives and moderates in his party, hoping Democrats will unite to launch the biggest expansion of social spending in nearly 60 years. He risks disaster if he can't get the two sides to make a deal. "This is a time like no other," wrote Frida Ghitis. "But Democrats in Congress seem to be blind to what's at stake." As they battle over the size of the budget reconciliation bill, they are forgetting the threat posed by President Donald Trump's effort to delegitimize Biden's victory in the 2020 election -- and game the system for the 2022 and 2024 votes. "Trump is tightening his grip on a party that was once respectable and has now...
HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — With the Las Vegas Raiders headed to San Francisco for their final preseason game Sunday, coach Jon Gruden said this year’s lot of draft picks isn’t the only group with something to prove. “Well, it’s all of our young players, last year’s class and this year’s class kind of combined,” Gruden said. “We’ve had a chance to develop players, and that’s all the coaches can do. We can draft, and we can trade, and we can sign guys. At the end of the day, coaches are here to develop players and I’m really excited about the job our staff has done. I’ve seen some of these young guys really get better.” With injuries taking their toll on several of last year’s rookies, a total of 47 games were missed. Five rookies saw playing time last season, Tanner Muse missed the entire season with a toe injury and Lynn Bowden Jr. was traded. Henry Ruggs (13), Bryan Edwards (12), Damon Arnette (9), Amik Robertson (8) and John Simpson (7) combined for 49 appearances. Several from this year’s...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s a regatta that is invitation only, and only the best teams in the world have a chance to compete. This year, that includes a team from St. Joseph’s Prep. Eyewitness News caught up with the talented group before it hopped on a plane and headed overseas. While many of their peers are enjoying summer vacation, the St. Joe’s Prep varsity eight is still grinding. Come next week, the Prep will compete across the pond in the world’s oldest regatta called the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames in England. “There is nothing more prestigious than Henley with the exception of the Olympic Games,” head rowing coach John Fife said. “It’s completely lined with spectators,” Tommy Schrieber, a graduated senior, said. “It’s really, really cool.” And this squad likes its chances. “This is the best Prep crew...
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mecole Hardman knows the exhilaration of walking off the field as a Super Bowl champion. Last February, he and his Kansas City Chiefs teammates also experienced the bitter disappointment of losing the biggest game of the season “You still got that bad taste in your mouth,” Hardman said of his team’s 31-9 loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. “I think as a collective group we’re just all trying to get back to get that taste out of our mouth from losing that game.” Kansas City’s veterans filed into Scanlon Hall dormitory on the campus of Missouri Western State University on Monday, ready to set aside last season’s disappointment and focus on the new opportunity at hand. The full squad starts training camp workouts on Tuesday, and it’s the beginning of a “prove-it” year for many players, such as Hardman who are nearing crossroads in their careers. Hardman posted a solid rookie campaign in 2019 with 26 catches for 538 yards and six touchdowns. Big plays, however, eluded the receiver last season as he...
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) – Broncos Training Camp is days away, and the players are ready to make a statement. “I’m just attacking camp this year, honestly. Focusing on consistency throughout camp. Definitely want to establish myself as one of the best tight ends in the league. There’s been some controversy about that, but I’m looking to solidify myself this year where those no questions asked,” Noah Fant said. Justin Fields ready to prove himself once again for the Chicago Bears Usayd Koshul June 18, 2021 Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on reddit Share on email One storyline for the Chicago Bears throughout the offseason has been the status of quarterback Justin Fields. The 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has been the second quarterback on the team’s depth chart since being drafted, speculation about when Fields will start continues to arise. For those who followed Fields throughout his college career, the Georgia native originally committed to the University of Georgia where he was a backup during his freshman year in 2018, before transferring to Ohio State for his 2019 season. Now in the NFL, Fields is once again tasked with sitting and learning behind veteran Andy Dalton to earn the starting job, something he’s had to do in the past. “Just getting better everyday,” Fields said via the Bears official Youtube page. “I mean, I’ve been in a situation like this before and all I did was...

That player earned four Pro Bowl nods in Baltimore and received a five-year, $85 million contract from the Jets in March 2019 to be the leader of their defense. Since then, he has earned $29 million from the Jets but played in only two games. Injuries in 2019 and a COVID opt-out in 2020 kept Mosley off the field. Yankees prove something massive after Domingo German domination Alexander Wilson May 20, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditFor the second consecutive game, the New York Yankees completely blanked the Texas Rangers. After starting pitcher Corey Kluber threw a no-hitter on Wednesday evening, Domingo German backed his performance up with another adequate outing. German currently hosts a 3.05 ERA, and after starting the season with a few disappointing performances, he’s finally found his groove, allowing just six hits over 7.0 innings against Texas in the victory. He struck out five batters and didn’t walk a single one, giving the relief pitchers an easy way out of the final 2.0 innings of the contest. However, the Yankees learned something huge over the past two games: Their starting pitching rotation is sufficient. Currently, they have Gerrit Cole hosting a 2.03 ERA, the best of his entire career. Of course, it is over a smaller sample size, but he’s already performing far superior compared to his 2020 outing over just 12 games. In nine games, not only does he have...
BOSTON (AP) — A smile hugging his face, Davon Godchaux had no trouble pinpointing the source of his joy as he spoke to reporters about signing a two-year, $13 million free agent deal to join the New England Patriots. “The passion comes from Week 5 (last season), getting hurt and not playing the rest of the season,” Godchaux said Wednesday. “I’m so hungry to get back out there. I’m so ready to dominate. … To get back out there with the guys and the team and team bonding. I missed out on that.” Linebacker Kyle Van Noy was just as giddy as he described his thoughts about signing a two-year, $13 million deal to return to his familiar stomping grounds in New England, the place where he earned two Super Bowl rings and saw his stock rise over 3 1/2 seasons. “I’m just happy to be back with my brothers,” Van Noy said. “It’s going to be exciting. Hopefully, we can do some damage and make some noise.” The Patriots ranked 15th in the NFL in total defense...
PORT ST. LUCIE — Dellin Betances has thrown just 12 ¹/₃ innings over the past two years, so he spent the offseason trying to learn more about the body that betrayed him. The Mets reliever hopes it leads to a healthy bounce-back season in 2021, whether or not his velocity ever lights up the radar again the way it did during his All-Star seasons with the Yankees. “I feel tremendously better than I did last year,” Betances said Wednesday at Clover Park. “I definitely have something to prove. … I want to win the fan base over. I was able to do that with the Yankees, but I haven’t done near nothing with the Mets, so for me, I have to win the fan base over and just do my job.” To try to get back to that level, Betances enlisted the help of Rockland Peak Performance (RPP), a biomechanics-focused baseball training facility in Paramus, N.J., over the offseason. He worked with RPP owner Nunzio Signore to get a clearer picture of his body — one that has sustained right...

But despite her losing skid, Jedrzejczyk (16-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) proved that she’s still in top form. In her past outing at UFC 248 in March, Jedrzejczyk was narrowly edged by current strawweight champion Zhang Weili in a grueling and entertaining battle, which earned MMA Junkie’s 2020 “Fight of the Year” honor. Coach Rick Bowness, captain Jamie Benn and the Dallas Stars were ready to get out of the NHL bubble after two months that ended in the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2000. They now relish the opportunity for better starts and finishes. “There’s just an air in the locker room right now. All the guys are eager to get going, and we’ve got something to prove. … We left two games on the table there,” center Jason Dickinson said. “There’s a fire, and that’s the carryover we’re getting instead of in March where we needed to reset going into the bubble.” The Stars were on a six-game skid when the NHL season was paused in March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Their camp last summer before entering the Edmonton playoff bubble set the foundation for their upswing, and Dallas got to Game 6 in the Cup final before a season-ending loss to Tampa Bay, now a division foe. The Stars didn’t look like a Stanley Cup contender when last season began. They started in October 2019 by...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Do you sometimes feel your dog is trying to dominate you? On this week’s Pet Project, Carol Erickson discusses whether dogs are actually trying to be dominate or not. “I want to do something that debunks a lot of the nonsense that I think you hear and everybody else hears from a lot of dog trainers who say the dog is trying to dominate you, you must be the leader,” Erickson said. Erickson says there is a great article in the You Dog news letter from Tufts University. Their behaviorist has very interesting ideas on the topic of dominance. Erickson says the idea of a dog being dominate is “nonsense” and says that “trainers keep offering it up and are telling you that you’re too lenient and you’re not showing the dog who is boss.” According to the veterinarian behaviorist from Tufts University, dogs do not have a need to be dominate and therefore they do not need to be trained away from the tendency. They simply want easy access to something they want but they’re not...
Mississippi State (2-4, 2-4 SEC) at No. 13 Georgia (4-2, 4-2), Saturday at 7:30 p.m. EST (SEC Network). Line: Georgia by 25. Series record: Georgia leads 18-6. WHAT’S AT STAKE? Pride, mainly. Georgia still has an outside shot at reaching the Southeastern Conference championship game, but would need to win out and hope Florida loses two of its last four games — highly unlikely with the Gators’ remaining opponents sporting a combined record of 7-17. Mississippi State is looking ahead to 2021 after a stunning upset over defending national champion LSU in the season opener was followed by a four-game losing streak. KEY MATCHUP Georgia’s defense vs. Mississippi State QB Will Rogers or K.J. Costello. In a season going nowhere, there are some Jets still going somewhere. The season is over in terms of team goals. At 0-9, this season was dead and buried weeks ago. But after this week’s bye, the Jets still have seven games left and there are still some players with questions to answer. The biggest one is quarterback Sam Darnold, of course. Can he show enough in the final seven games to make the Jets think he is worth sticking with instead of drafting Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields? But Darnold is not the only one with something to prove on this roster. The Jets are expected to have a new coaching staff in 2021 and that staff won’t have any allegiance to the current players. Players can show over these final seven games that the next staff should keep them or impress other teams who may want to acquire them. Here are the players in the non-Darnold division who have the most to lose or gain over the final stretch of the season: Chris Herndon Nothing has been more...
Chris Cuomo has been a very vocal critic of President Donald Trump, but at the end of Thursday’s episode of Cuomo Prime Time, the CNN host took the unusual step of urging the president’s supporters to get out to the polls and vote for him – but to wear a mask and not “make yourself sick to make a point.” Speaking directly to Trump supporters in the show’s final segment, Cuomo said that the idea of “fighting with each other of the reality of the pandemic is literally, just the worst thing we can be doing.” Cuomo said that it would be “hypocrisy” for him to not say this to Trump voters, and then encouraged them to exercise their right to vote, and get out and cast their ballots for him. “OK? Wear the mask and vote for Trump,” Cuomo said. “Please, do not make yourself sick to make a point. We are not rounding the corner. It is not going away. The spikes aren’t gone. Those are all lies.” As the lates daily update of the Covid Tracking Project from Thursday showed, the seven-day...

Denver in Decay, a documentary by KNUS radio personality and filmmaker Steffan Tubbs that castigates the city for its alleged inaction on chronic homelessness and violent protests, was meant to be provocative. But did it provoke "Denver on the Rise," a new and decidedly optimistic city-produced video shared via Twitter and other social media channels on October 7? Tubbs admits he can't prove it, but he has suspicions. Corresponding via email, he writes: "I think the City of Denver went, 'Holy shit — Tubbs's film isn't as slanted and bad as we thought!' and 'We should do something ourselves!'" Not true, maintains Theresa Marchetta, a former TV reporter/anchor and spokesperson for Mayor Michael Hancock, who narrates "Denver on the Rise." When asked by email if "Denver on the Rise" is a response to Denver in Decay, she answers with a simple "No," adding that she hasn't had time to watch that documentary.Related Stories Denver in Decay: Steffan Tubbs on Controversial New Documentary Breonna Taylor Protests: Media in Denver Puts Violence Before Peace COVID-19 Denver: Average Cases Have Doubled in Two Weeks...
Former Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn has a “switch” that goes off when you tell her she can’t accomplish something. “Anytime someone said I couldn’t do something, that kicked my determination and drive into turbo mode,” Vonn revealed during a talk with Angela Duckworth, the author of “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance,” and Wheels Up exec Gail Grimmett. “I was like, ‘Watch me, I’m going to prove you wrong and then some,’ and that’s kind of always how I’ve been.” Vonn added, “I’ve had people question what I’m doing, or how I’m doing it . . . since I was like 7 years old. There’s always a debate surrounding it when a champion loses and receives an immediate rematch, rather than other contenders getting a shot to take the belt, but few will contest that Holloway deserves this title shot – Holloway’s own run as featherweight champion was dominant, and his track record warrants the second shot at beating Volkanovski. But if seeing if the former champion can get his belt back or not isn’t a good enough reason to pay attention to this fight, the potential rivalry between fighters may be. It looks like such a rivalry could be emerging based on the talk between Holloway and Volkanovski during the buildup to this matchup. What have the...
