A 22-year-old accused of trafficking drugs and flaunting his cash and machine guns in a YouTube video will spend more than six years in federal prison, authorities said.  Phillips Charles, also known as PHON C, pleaded guilty to several drug and gun charges in April and was sentenced earlier this month to six and a half years in prison with four years of supervised release, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.  Charles is well known to police in Middlesex County. After his arrest in October 2019 arrest for suspected drug trafficking, the reported gang member continued to traffic drugs and flaunted it along with his cash and weapons online, federal authorities said.  "... Specifically, while on pretrial release, Charles was involved in the filming of a publicly posted music video in which Charles was shown along with numerous firearms, including a firearm with an attached “selector switch,” one of which he was shown handling and pointing at the camera. Videos and text messages recovered during the investigation revealed that Charles historically possessed a number of firearms," a release from the U.S....
A young woman who appeared on the TV series Beyond Scared Straight as a teenager has been found dead in an abandoned house in California, authorities say. The body of Ashley Tropez, who appeared on the reality show in 2011, was found after the Victorville Police Department responded to a report of a dead body inside a property in Victorville, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said in a press release Saturday. She was 24 years old. “Upon arrival, deputies located Ashley Tropez inside the house, suffering from traumatic injuries,” the release says. The precise nature of the injuries and the cause of Tropez’s death were not disclosed. After Tropez’s body was found, investigators arrested Alexis Call, 24, as a suspect in Tropez’s murder. The news release states that authorities believe Tropez and Call knew each other, and that they “may have been squatting at the residence.” Call is being held at the High Desert Detention Center and was expected to appear in court Tuesday, Page Six reports. Tropez appeared on the A&E prison show when she was just 17. The...
THE MAGMA within the world's largest active volcano has increased in volume as scientists speculate when the next triggering earthquake will occur. The Mauna Loa volcano is more than five miles tall and researchers know just what it'll take to set the volcano off. 3Scientists estimate the Mauna Loa volcano is between 700,000 and one million years oldCredit: Getty Images - Getty 3Mauna Loa has erupted dozens of times since the 19th centuryCredit: Getty Images - Getty 3The destruction from the 1950 eruptionCredit: USGS Advanced ground- and satellite-based measuring tools indicate to researchers that the .04 square miles of new magma has flowed into the volcano chamber between 2014 and 2020. By tracking the magma's motion, the study authors determined the most likely causes of an eruption. "An earthquake of magnitude 6 or greater would relieve the stress imparted by the influx of magma along a sub-horizontal fault under the western flank of the volcano," University of Miami PhD candidate and study author Bhuvan Varugu said in a press release. Warning: the above video contains disturbing content. Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin released new video from the police body cam footage taken during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School to CNN, acknowledging that he was risking getting in legal trouble for doing so, Shimon Prokupecz reported on Sunday. Prokupecz, one of the cable news network’s main reporters covering this story, obtained the video clips and reported on them during CNN Newsroom on Sunday. Earlier this week, surveillance video was released by the Austin American-Statesman showing the law enforcement officers failing to engage the shooter for a stunning 77 minutes. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed. A Texas House investigative committee released an interim report finding multiple “systemic failures,” including massive confusion among the nearly 400 officers from 20 law enforcement agencies who never established the incident command structure that has been a part  of police training provided by the Department of Homeland Security for years. McLaughlin has been a vocal critic of how Statesman released the video, agreeing that it needed to be released eventually for transparency, but insisting the victims’ families should...

WASHINGTON (AP) — The worst possible moment for bringing Trevor Reed home turned out to be the best. With U.S.-Russian relations at their lowest point in decades, it seemed an improbable time to hope for the release of Reed, a former Marine detained in Russia for almost three years. Yet this week the Biden administration completed the type of transaction it had earlier seemed resistant to, exchanging Reed for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot and convicted drug trafficker serving a 20-year prison sentence in Connecticut. A series of events and considerations in the last two months helped facilitate the swap, including escalating concerns over Reed’s health, a private Oval Office meeting between his parents and President Joe Biden and a secretive Moscow trip by a former diplomat on the cusp of Russia’s war with Ukraine. “All those three forced the White House to make a decision that they hadn’t made before,” said Mickey Bergman, vice president at the Richardson Center for Global Engagement. How the war — and the breakdown in U.S.-Russian relations — affected the deal isn’t clear. U.S....

The former head of a central Pennsylvania county drug task force stole more than $200,000 from the agency over five years, alleges the Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro. Former Lancaster County Det. Sgt. John Burkhart stole money seized during drug investigations using two separate schemes, according to Attorney General Shapiro's release on Tuesday, Mar. 13. The first scheme involved $150,000 in seized cash from the drug task force safe, where seized money was stored before it was formally forfeited and placed in a bank account, the release explains. The second scheme involved skimming approximately $50,000 off deposits before they could be recorded by the treasurer, according to the release. TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals released linebacker Jordan Hicks on Wednesday, freeing up salary-cap space. The team will gain $6.5 million in cap room by cutting Hicks, who spent the last three years with the Cardinals after playing for Philadelphia from 2015-18. Hicks had a very solid season in which he made 116 tackles, a career-best four sacks, seven tackles for loss, had five pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. There’s expected to be strong free agent interest in Hicks, 29, who was a third-round draft pick by the Eagles in 2015. “Jordan Hicks did a great job this year, especially under the circumstances he was in,” Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said at the NFL scouting combine. “Jordan was a guy that knew the defense inside and out. We benefited from that because of the complexity of some of the things that we were doing. But moving forward, there’s...

McAllen, Texas — Most of the 13 migrant boys waiting inside the small airport in this south Texas city were still wearing the gray sweatpants and sweatshirts the U.S. government gave them after they crossed the southern border alone. A federal judge on Wednesday blocked the release of a Tennessee man who was seen inside the Capitol carrying a handful of plastic restraints during the deadly Jan. 6 riot.
