SDI Productions With lingering high inflation, stock market volatility and recession fears, it's easy to see why some Americans might trim charitable giving. But some donors may be eyeing bigger gifts for 2022 because of that economic uncertainty, according to a study from Fidelity Charitable, a nonprofit enabling investors to give through a so-called donor-advised fund, a charitable investment account.related investing newsThe individual investor is pessimistic. Here is what that means for the marketAlex Harringan hour agoNearly 75% of those surveyed said they worry about other community members and 64% are concerned about nonprofits amid threats of a recession. Dear Amy: I love my friend “Charlene,” but she is the very definition of high-maintenance. She drinks way too much — every day — and sleeps with strangers she meets in bars. The problem then becomes that she thinks she is in a relationship with them and is crushed when things don’t work out. And they never work out. I’m not exaggerating. She is extremely sexual and is very vulnerable. She is desperate for an authentic and loving relationship, but men have used, abused and taken advantage of her. Charlene has behaved this way since the day we met. She ignores every piece of advice I give her but then she expects me to be a shoulder to cry on when her life falls apart. It completely drains me. I try to be supportive and non-judgmental because she really is a beautiful person. She has been there for me through some tough times, but this friendship has become draining and I feel terrible. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent more money on legal fees for their charities than they raised in 2020, filings reveal.  The Sussexes' US charity Archewell told the IRS in December that it raised less than $50,000 in 2020 — only opening a bank account last January. And documents for their UK charity Sussex Royal, which changed its name to MWX Foundation in 2020 and is currently being dissolved, show that between June 2020 and June 2021 spent more than $55,000 on legal fees including attorneys' costs for wrapping up the nonprofit. Meghan and Harry's charities have been mired in controversy since their launch, revealing family divisions and were hit with a UK watchdog investigation and criticism over their use of opaque and secretive Delaware corporations. UK Companies House filings show the defunct British charity had more than $380,000 in its accounts in 2020, and spent at least $55,600 on attorneys, including about $35,000 to Harbottle & Lewis and $20,600 to an unidentified law firm.  Prince Harry and Meghan filed IRS tax documents for their new US charity Archewell, in...
In a normal year — and no, we have not had one of those lately — only the small minority of those who itemize their tax returns can deduct charitable donations. This year, however, most folks can get a break for giving money to charity whether they itemize or not. The Internal Revenue Service joined with several nonprofit groups on Monday, Dec. 13, to get the word out about a special pandemic tax provision that can help the 85% of people who don’t itemize get a tax credit for their largesse. The rules: You must give to a bona fide charity that has exempt status with the IRS. You can check whether the organization you want to give to qualifies at https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/tax-exempt-organization-search. ‘Tis the season to give: In fact, about a third of annual giving occurs in December, and 12% during the last three days of the year, according to Charity Navigator. But if you’re like a lot of people, the idea of donating to charity can be financially painful. So instead of giving until it hurts, you’ll want to give in a way that helps by stretching your bountiful gift with a tax break or in some other way. And you’ll also certainly want to make sure your money goes to a reputable charity. [Read: New Rules for Charitable Giving.] To give more to charity this year without breaking your bank, here are some suggestions: — Ask your employer to match your donations. — Get a tax break for a cash donation. — Give within your community. — Donate stocks. — Consider donor-advised funds. — Donate qualified charitable distributions. — Research charities. — Consider alternatives to donating money. Ask if Your Employer Will Match Your Donations The company you work for can make giving easier, says Pam Krueger, a registered...

Older people are more likely than younger people to do things that benefit others, such as social distancing during the Covid pandemic and making charitable donations, new research suggests. Women in general were found to be kinder than men, while wealth appeared to have a negative effect on philanthropy, with those who perceived themselves as being better off donating less to good causes. There is also a big divide in the types of charities age groups prefer to help, according to the researchers. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are entering 'the era of visibility' and 'seem to be existing in a different place', according to the couple's biographer Omid Scobie. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are 'now in the thrive chapter' of their life as they plan to restart more in-person charity work with their Archewell Foundation, he said. Mr Scobie, who is a trusted media contact of the Sussexes, also told how they are 'really excited' about a busy autumn and winter of public engagements in the US. The Sussexes, who live in an £11million mansion in Montecito, California, have been on parenting leave since the birth of their second child Lilibet Diana on June 4.  Mr Scobie co-wrote their biography Finding Freedom, with an updated paperback version out on August 31, the day Harry's mother Princess Diana died in Paris in 1997. Reverend Al Sharpton's nonprofit civil rights charity, the National Action Network, paid more than $80,000 to the preacher's relatives last year, tax records show have revealed.   Receiving the bulk of the family-friendly funds was Sharpton's 33-year-old daughter Ashley Sharpton, who was paid $63,250 for social media and consulting work for NAN, according to a 2019 tax filing obtained by the New York Post. A group of multimillionaires says the next stimulus package should force philanthropists to hand out more money to charities while the country grapples with the pandemic. The Patriotic Millionaires, whose members include the Disney DIS, +0.70% heiress Abigail Disney, are among those asking Congress to pass an “emergency charity stimulus bill” that would temporarily require private foundations to double the amount of money they give to nonprofits. Under current law, private foundations like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Ford Foundation are required to hand out 5% of their assets each year in grants to nonprofits. The bill would double a foundation’s minimum payout to 10% of its assets for the next three years. The bill would also require donor-advised funds — tax-advantaged accounts that wealthy people often use for charitable giving — to send 10% of their assets to charities each year. REDWOOD CITY (KPIX 5) — A Peninsula woman known as “Mama Becky” is doing more than she imagined possible serving poor villages in Uganda for the last 13 years. Becky Miller wanted to share Bible stories during a church missions trip to Uganda in 2006, but there was a problem: “Whenever we were in the poor villages, no one had a book or picture,” Miller observed. So the retired Redwood City teacher and realtor co-founded Imagine Acts Ministry. Since 2007, she’s raised money to print and give away thousands of Bible storybooks illustrated by a Ugandan artist. “I just was touched by their poverty and by their need,” Miller said. Imagine Acts Ministry has raised more than $880,000 and expanded its reach. It built an outpatient clinic in 2014 co-founded by Dan SSempanyi, a doctor the nonprofit had helped put through medical school. “So we call her Mama Becky, just because of her love.” said Ssempanyi, also known as Dr. Dan for short. Shalom Medical Clinic in the poor village of Kimunda serves about 50 people a week. Mama Becky...
