A 53-year-Winthrop woman, who police said went on a racist tired against her neighbor, made homemade strop strips to blow out her neighbor's car tires over the weekend. Angela Foley is charged with violating a person's civil rights and multiple counts of destruction of property from the incident over the weekend, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said. A judge released Foley on her own recognizance but ordered her to stay at least 20 yards away from her neighbor. Prosecutors had asked for a mental health evaluation, GPS monitoring, and a $500 bail.  Police said Foley smashed out her neighbor's window while screaming racial slurs. She also glued nails to paint stirrers and put them behind her neighbor's car tires, which destroyed them. It's unclear what started the argument between the two. “No one who supports fair and just communities can ignore or accept these types of hate-based crimes,"  Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. "They corrode the very underpinnings of a civil society. Whether they’re committed by a single individual or an organized group, these actions are a direct assault on...
(CNN)Kenyans have long dominated the podium when it comes to long distance running, but now Ferdinand Omanyala is looking to inspire a new generation of runners and transform Kenya into a "sprinting nation." The 26-year-old is leading by example after he secured multiple victories this year. In May, Omanyala was first to the men's 100 meter finish line at the World Athletics Continental Tour. The following month, he clinched first place in the 100m again after a photo-finish at the African Athletic Championships. And Omanyala earned Kenya its first 100m gold medal in 60 years at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The sprinter, who made it to the 100m semi-finals in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, says he is continuously training for the next competition. In this photo illustration a Pixar Animation Studios logo is seen on a smartphone screen.Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images The Walt Disney Company is set to reveal new information about its upcoming slate of animated movies and TV shows during its Pixar and Disney Animation Studios panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California Friday. Animated movies released theatrically have floundered at the box office in the wake of the pandemic. At first, parents were reticent to bring kids back to cinemas, but now it seems that lackluster titles and an increase in children's content on streaming have contributed to keeping families at home. Disney has exacerbated this issue since movie theaters reopened, as it has placed the majority of its new Pixar films on Disney+ including "Turning Red," "Soul" and "Luca." While these decisions were made at time when vaccinations were either not available to children and moviegoing foot traffic was slow, it trained consumers to expect these titles on streaming. It's part of the reason that "Lightyear" had a lackluster opening in theaters this summer. Of course,...
The more we learn about former president Donald Trump’s apparent theft of documents from the White House, the worse the story gets. And not just for the legal jeopardy he has put himself in, but, more importantly, for the national security of the United States. That is especially the case, in light of the recent revelations from Washington Post reporters Devlin Barrett and Carol Leonnig, that among the documents found in the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago were secrets pertaining to the nuclear program of a foreign nation. And there were other documents so highly classified that all but a small handful of U.S. government officials were denied the right to see them or even know about their existence. The story, should it be proven to be true, appears to confirm many of the worst fears national security experts have had with regard to the risks associated with Trump’s illegal relocation of the documents to his Florida home/country club. It makes it absolutely clear that this is not merely a dispute about “document storage”—as Republican defenders of Trump like Florida Sen....

Getty Images Are two "Vanderpump Rules" stars getting back together? Could a rekindling be on the horizon for two “Vanderpump Rules” stars? Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney announced their decision to split in March 2022. THERE are over four billion adults across the globe wearing glasses, and they surely have someone to thank for such a discovery that helps those with sight problems to see better. This is all about the invention of the glasses. When were glasses invented? The first-ever wearable eyeglasses were invented back in the thirteenth century in Italy. The lenses were fitted in frames made out of wood or leather and occasionally, even animal horns. They were mostly used by monks back in the day and many artworks from the Renaissance sees many scholars holding a frame or wearing one. Over time, technology helped to evolve eyeglasses and improve the material the frame and lenses are made from. 1There are no records indicating the person who invented glasses, but we do know that they were created by the RomansCredit: Getty During such time, glasses were made mostly available to those who were wealthy and they represented intelligence and prosperity, something that poor people lacked off because of the poor living conditions. The creation spread across Europe and in the 1700s another...

(CNN)It seems that increasingly these days, the United States is letting Ukraine fight, valiantly, but is it with one hand tied behind its back? David AndelmanThe US and its allies have given the Ukrainians artillery systems, some of them quite advanced, but withheld those with the longest range or, as arms experts have suggested, the greatest sophistication. In an address to Congress on Wednesday, Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska asked US lawmakers to send air defense systems to her country "in order for rockets not to kill children in their strollers."Still, Ukrainian officials have expressed their public gratitude for weapons delivered so far. Ukranian President Voldymyr Zelensky, in his daily video message Monday, observed that his armed forces are now "able to inflict significant logistical losses on the occupiers." Military observers tell me that Zelensky and his senior generals have expressed their delight in the new systems that are appearing, hoping that their words will encourage a greater willingness of the West to release even more advanced systems that could turn the tide of battle by leaps and bounds. Wade, Republican-led states quickly implemented severe abortion restrictions and outright bans. This left hospitals, pharmacies, medical practices, and other health care providers scrambling to interpret the new laws and communicate policy changes to employees. Already, we’ve seen reports of OB-GYNs hesitating to terminate unviable pregnancies that are endangering the health of a pregnant person because the fetus still has a heartbeat, and of pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions for non-pregnant women of childbearing age because the medication could cause miscarriages. (CNN)Tuesday morning's Emmy nominations had a little bit for everyone, and that's great. But as with every award show shortlist, not all the beloved series and performances made the cut. Where, for example, was the love for NBC's final season of "This Is Us," the show that made a name for itself just a few years ago with its weepy storytelling and astonishing performances? At one point, this series, which earned 40 Emmy nominations for its prior seasons, was hailed for reviving broadcast TV representation at the cable/streaming-heavy awards show. But as this series took its last breath, Emmy voters ultimately decided to let this series about life and death rest in peace, giving it only one nomination for outstanding original music and lyrics. It previously earned three Emmy awards -- two for outstanding guest actor in a drama (Gerald McRaney in 2017 and Ron Cephas Jones in 2020), one for lead actor in a drama (Sterling K. Brown). It was also awarded one TV Academy honor. "Insecure," meanwhile, would have been a welcomed addition to the stellar outstanding comedy...

President Joe Biden is traveling to Ohio on Wednesday, even as his administration is preparing to lift some of the economic tariffs on China. The president is expected to journey to Cleveland to talk about the growth of the economy and speak at the Iron Workers Local 17 Training Center. Recent reports say the president may act as soon as this week to lift billions of dollars of tariffs on China-made goods shipped to the United States. Corporations have campaigned extensively to get Biden to lift tariffs, citing record-high inflation as a reason for doing so. But economists estimate lifting tariffs will have a very little immediate impact on consumer prices. Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH), who is running for Senate in Ohio, lambasted the president in June for even considering the idea. “Letting up on a communist government that’s made it their decades-long mission to undercut American manufacturing isn’t how we bring costs down,” he wrote on social media. “It’s these kinds of irresponsible trade policies that got us here in the first place.” Are you kidding me? Letting up...
I finally finished running up that hill, and I am tired. Watching Stranger Things is an exercise in torment. The show is good. There are legitimately thrilling sequences and plot ideas rooted in deep character relationships that you cling to along the ride. But did that ride have to take 12 hours? Roe V. Wade has officially been overturned by the Supreme Court, eradicating 50 years of American women's rights to abortion. The Supreme Court's decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization made Friday, June 24, upheld a Mississippi law that banned abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. States will soon be allowed to ban women's access to abortion, and 22 of them are expected to in some way. According to a poll by CBS News, 50 percent of people say abortion should be made available while 33 percent say there should be stricter limits. An initial draft majority opinion leaked in May suggested this might happen. Roe v. Wade was a landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that regulating it was unconstitutional.  This is a developing story. Check back for more.
Gordon Brown has revealed that Vladimir Putin threatened him during an official visit to Moscow and says the West ‘failed’ to stand up to the Russian President for years before his invasion of Ukraine. Mr Brown has also slammed 'global disunity' after 150 countries failed to impose sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. ‘I was under no illusions about what Putin was like,’ the former Prime Minister said in an interview this weekend. Recalling a 2006 visit to the Kremlin while Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Brown said: ‘I was put in a very low seat so that I was looking up at him. He’s certainly a relatively small man, and he wears these stacked heels. ‘Anyway, that day he took out these index cards, and proceeded to read out all this information he had about me, as though he wanted to prove that he knew more about me than I knew about myself. So when people say that Putin’s changed and is only now threatening, I can tell you that he was threatening me even then.’

ALL eyes were on Kate Middleton and Prince William as they attended the service of thanksgiving for the Queen at St Paul's Cathedral yesterday. After the service, the royal couple beamed and chatted on the steps of the cathedral, and a lip reader claimed William gave Kate clear instructions for what to do next. 5Prince William spoke to Kate Middleton as they stood on the top of the steps at St Paul's CathedralCredit: Splash 5Prince William is said to have told Kate to wait before they moved, according to a lip readerCredit: PA Speaking to the Mirror, lip reading expert John Cassidy said Kate, 40, praised the service saying: "It went very well, very well". They’re great pets for kid; as emotional-support animals, they’re “adorable, portable, and convenient,” according to the website ESA Doctors. But, in what’s perhaps another sign of our dawning dystopia, scientists have managed to use emerging genetic technology to make your friendly hamster into a hyper-aggressive tyrant. Using CRISPR Cas9, a gene-editing technique, a group of University of Georgia researchers managed to eliminate a “neurochemical signaling pathway that plays a critical role” in affecting group behavior in mammals—these control “social phenomena ranging from pair bonding, cooperation, and social communication to dominance and aggression,” according to the university’s press release. Basically, the hamsters are bullies. If you try to transport these in a small cage, it might turn into the equivalent of an MMA ring—a kind of portable Fight Club set. The researchers figured what they did would make the fuzzy critters more passive, because they assumed the pathway, known as...
Jimmy Kimmel broke down while addressing the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, questioning how tragedies like this “make sense to anyone.” “Here we are again, on another day of mourning in this country,” said Kimmel, who did not welcome a live audience Wednesday night. “Once again, we grieve for the little boys and girls whose lives have been ended and whose families have been destroyed.” The host became immediately emotional at the start of his Wednesday show, where he addressed the shooting for the first time as his Tuesday episode had been taped prior to the tragedy at Robb Elementary School. Kimmel spoke of the shooting, which saw 18-year-old gunman, suspected to be Salvador Ramos, kill 19 children and two adults, for roughly six minutes on Wednesday. “While our leaders on the right — the Americans in Congress and at Fox News and these other outlets — warn us not to politicize this. They immediately criticize our President for even speaking about doing something to stop it,” Kimmel said  “Because they don’t want to speak about it. Because they know...
In the past, how FISA warrants have been used to gather intelligence and subsequently leveraged against the American public has been limited and concealed by the federal government through classified reports. However, in late 2020, a decision by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) — the entity responsible for serving as a watchdog for the federal intelligence apparatus — mandated that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) report the “number of U.S. person queries run by the FBI against 702-acquired information.” In alignment with these new protocols, ODNI’s recently released Annual Statistical Transparency Report included data on how often the FBI gathered information on American citizens invoking section 702 this past year. In total, there were 3,394,053 searches made against individual American citizens. By comparison, there were 1,324,057 total queries made in 2020. This marks a 250% search increase in President Joe Biden's first year in office. The ODNI reported that more than half of these queries were part of a larger investigation of alleged attempts by Russian nationals to target or weaken critical American infrastructure.

These Lululemon running shorts were built for people with athletic legs to run comfortably and look good doing it. After the year we’ve all had, this summer, to me, is about nothing more than looking good and feeling great in all aspects of life, including exercise. For this reason, when it came to trying to keep up my running regime throughout the summer, I grabbed a pair of Lululemon’s Track That Shorts. I was admittedly first interested in these shorts because of their cool retro look that reminded me of old-school outdoors magazines. But, as it turns out, sometimes it’s okay to judge a book by its cover or a pair of shorts by how much it reminds you of a Princess Diana look. The other, and perhaps more important reason I instantly fell for these shorts is that they offer a little more coverage than most modern athletic shorts. I will always be someone who feels a little more comfortable wearing a little more fabric, which is tricky during the warm months, and even trickier for working out during...
Shoppers running routine errands and four grocery store employees, including a security guard, were among those shot in Buffalo, New York, as more information about victims of the attack emerged Sunday from officials and relatives. Much about the 10 people who were fatally shot was still unknown. But the victims, whom police did not immediately name, included: Ruth Whitfield, 88: Whitfield was a devoted parishioner at Durham Memorial AME Zion Church for 50 years, where she sang in the choir, her daughter-in-law Cassietta Whitfield said. Ruth Whitfield had lived in Buffalo for more than five decades, raising four children. In recent years, she had taken on caring for her husband, who was in a nursing home. Whitfield has eight grandchildren. “She was a religious woman who cared deeply for her family,” Cassietta Whitfield said. Roberta Drury, 32: Drury was on her way to the Tops supermarket to get groceries to make dinner, according to her sister, Amanda Drury. “She was very vibrant,” Drury said. “She always was the center of attention and made the whole room smile and laugh.” Aaron...
DEAR MISS MANNERS: My sister is a deeply unhappy person, always on the lookout for some reason to be offended. Everyone in the family has always tiptoed around her and tried to read her mind, lest we failed to fulfill her unspoken expectations. We all struggled to be absolutely perfect in order to keep the peace and avoid her wrath. Of course, it did not work. Somebody seeking reasons to be angry and bitter will always find them. One by one, she chose estrangement from all of us, though her hatred always burned hottest toward me and our mother. Mom really struggled with the hurt and embarrassment of the situation. She was always a very private person and did not want to be the subject of gossip, so the situation was never discussed outside the circle of people who had been rejected by my sister. Only I knew what Mom was really going through. Related Articles Advice | Miss Manners: The men are ‘Doctor,’ but I’m called by my first name Advice | Miss Manners:...
On Thursday’s “CNN Newsroom,” Labor Secretary Marty Walsh responded to poll numbers showing most Americans think President Joe Biden’s policies have made the economy worse and over three-quarters see economic conditions as poor by stating that the foremost explanation for these numbers is “the fact that we’re still living within a pandemic.” Co-host Victor Blackwell asked, “The latest polling, though, shows that the American people believe that what this administration is doing is not helping. … And this just came out in the last 24 hours, how have Biden’s policies affected U.S. economic conditions? … 55% said that they’ve worsened conditions. 26% said they have no effect. Only 19% believe that they’ve improved conditions. … [T]he current economic conditions, 23% believe that they’re good across this country. That’s the lowest number in a CNN poll of the Biden administration. More than three-quarters, 77% say they’re poor. I mean, the president came out and sold an improving economic picture for the country. What’s the disconnect here?” Walsh responded, “Well, first and foremost, I mean, I think that we can’t lose sight of the...
