CNN anchor Don Lemon expressed his 'shock' on Wednesday at Meghan Markle's podcast admission that she only recently began to 'understand what it’s like to be a black woman'. While he praised the Duchess of Sussex for speaking out about 'colorism', he also said it was important to acknowledge that she was speaking from a position of privilege, given she 'did not have to deal with racism' until she married Prince Harry. 'I commend Meghan Markle for going there, even though it is a bit shocking that at 30-some years of age, she is just understanding what it’s like to be a Black woman in America,' Lemon hold his fellow co-anchors on Wednesday morning. It was a night to remember for all those present and those watching at home as 40-year-old Serena Williams was able to summon up the fortitude to win her second round-match at the US Open over world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit.   Williams seemed to turn back the clock, putting on a brilliant performance in the first set, struggling in the second and then coming out of the locker room to dominate the third set with a final score of 7-6, 2-6, 6-2.  The occasion was one of Williams' best performances this season, with the third set in particular a point of note as Kontaveit faltered and Serena got stronger. So what was it in the bathroom break at Flushing Meadows that got Serena to that point?  A reporter asked Serena if she did anything during her trip to the washroom that helped focus her efforts for her dominant final set.  Serena Williams continues writing the story book after a second round win on Wednesday  Serena Williams on what she did in the bathroom to come back in the third set...
(CNN)Extreme rainfall rates and rapid snowmelt prompted the flash flooding in Yellowstone National Park early this week, washing out roads and bridges in the park and causing "significant" damage to the town of Gardiner, Montana, at the park's entrance.Abnormally warm temperatures and torrential rain triggered a wave of snowmelt over the weekend which produced nearly a foot of water runoff by Monday.Parts of Yellowstone National Park may stay closed for substantial length of time after severe floodingThe Beartooth and Absaroka mountain ranges "received anywhere from 0.8 inches to over 5 inches of rainfall" from June 10 to June 13, the National Weather Service in Billings revealed Tuesday. The extreme rainfall combined with snowmelt led to a massive deluge of water equivalent to the area receiving two to three months worth of summer precipitation in just three days, according to CNN Weather calculations. The enormous volume of water then flowed into the rivers and valleys in lower elevations, where it quickly rose to record depths and led to "flooding rarely or never seen before," forecasters at the National Weather Service said.Read MoreThe Yellowstone...

DENVER (AP) — Vic Fangio didn’t appreciate John Harbaugh’s decision to have Lamar Jackson sweep left on the final snap of Baltimore’s 23-7 win in Denver just so the Ravens could match the longest streak in NFL history of 100-yard rushing games. “I thought it was kind of bull (expletive),” the Broncos coach said Monday when asked if he had a problem with the Ravens not just taking a knee. Halfpoint | iStock | Getty Images Legislation moving through Congress would make 12 weeks of paid family and sick leave available to most workers, and remove the U.S. from the small list of countries that are currently without such a policy. The exact details of the plan could still change, but experts say the historic public health crisis from which we're slowly emerging has pushed the debate on the need for a federal paid leave policy over the edge. While about 180 countries guarantee workers paid sick leave, the U.S. remains one of just 11 countries that doesn't, according to the World Policy Center. Even this policy would leave the U.S. behind: In Japan and Norway, for example, new parents are entitled to over 52 weeks of compensated time off. Research finds numerous benefits to paid leave policies, including less risk that sick workers show up to their jobs while contagious and better health outcomes for mothers and their babies. Here's what we know so far about the policy in the works. What are the details? This policy, which would likely...
(CNN)More than 122,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan, all with varying legal statuses and needs as many of them arrive in the United States. Some are US citizens, others Afghan interpreters who worked alongside US troops and were granted a special visa as a result, and others still are refugees fleeing for their lives. The focus is shifting on to those landing in the US and what assistance will be provided to those who left with little to no belongings after a frenzied evacuation effort. AP Photo/Orvil Samuel Saint Vincent is covered in ash as a volcano continues to erupt following Friday's initial blow. La Soufrière had been dormant for more than 40 years, but showed signs of activity in December. Residents of the island have sprung to action providing outreach and aid to those displaced. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Rachel Jayne already had a household full of people by the time the volcano began rumbling Thursday night. As Saint Vincent and the Grenadine's long-dormant volcano, La Soufrière, roared to life last week, Jayne's friends were among the thousands evacuated from the "red zone" on the main island's Northern tip. Jayne and her guests congregated in her family's home in the South, far from the volcano in the nation's "green zone." They heard La Soufrière's rumblings throughout the evening, Jayne told Insider, but continued calmly with preparation efforts, gathering water and storing food. Then, on the morning of...
The Conversation Spain What things say about us Sketch for _The Bedroom at Arles_ by Vincent van Gogh (October 1888). Wikimedia Commons / Gogh Museum, Amsterdam In the days following the death of a beloved relative, we re-enter his house, now empty of his laughter and caresses, more full of everything that his life developed between. Photographs, books, her favorite mugs, the jewelry she adorned herself with, the chair she used to watch TV. Tears invade us on our way through the rooms that were so familiar to us and have now suddenly become strange. What was a common space is now nothing but a place of sadness and memory. When the rooms are emptied, a whole world of memories will leave with the things that were so close. The anthropologist and theorist of science Bruno Latour has insisted on the hybridization between things, spaces and identity. Collections, samplings, furnishings, archives and libraries, museums, laboratories, digital networks and data complexes are conditions that are neither above nor below the social character of cultural productions. In culture, spaces, artifacts and communities...
By Sebastian Quiroz 0 COMMENTS 02/15/2021 8:10 am It seems that Project xCloud finally coming to iOS devices. However, it will not do it through a specific application, as it happens in Android, but, similar to GeForce Now and Google Stadia, it will do it through the web browser. According to a new report, Microsoft is already conducting internal testing for a browser version of this streaming platform. Sources close to The Verge have mentioned that employees are now testing a web version of xCloud before a public preview. Similar to the Android version, xCloud on browsers features a recommendations section, the ability to resume recently played titles, and access to all available cloud games through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. The Verge also shared the first image of xCloud in browsers, which you can see below: However, at the moment the available servers use an Xbox One S, so don’t expect a high resolution in this version of xCloud. However, there are plans to use the Series X infrastructure in the future. Similar to Stadia,...

Sebastian Gollnow | picture alliance | Getty Images Some 130 miles south of Salt Lake City, engineers are working on what will become a giant cavity in the ground. It's a geological formation known as a salt dome, a column of salt surrounded by sedimentary layers, and when it's filled with hydrogen, it could become one of the largest renewable energy reservoirs in the world. The historic wildfires that devastated California this year have highlighted concerns about climate change and how to make our society sustainable. The state aims to source all its power needs from clean, renewable energy by 2045, and Gov. Gavin Newsom recently said sales of new gas-powered passenger cars and trucks will end by 2035. Under a roadmap approved by the state regulator, California will need nearly 25 gigawatts in new renewable capacity, including some 8,900 megawatts of storage, by 2030. The Utah project could help meet those targets.     The Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES) project aims to build a storage facility for 1,000 megawatts of clean power, partly by putting hydrogen into underground salt...
On the day that Colorado banjoist Jayme Stone found out about the death of his 42-year-old brother Michael Stone, he started writing about it, trying to make sense of what was happening. Michael, who lived in British Columbia, was a well-known teacher of yoga and Buddhism, which influenced how Jayme approached the poetry, journal entries and lyrics he began to draft. One of the first things he wrote in his journal was the word "AWake," thinking about "the idea of what someone leaves in their wake and what it means to be awake to your own life," he says. It would eventually become the title of his latest album, AWake, which came out in late August. "I was just really in a grieving process and just trying to make sense of things," Stone recalls. "And it was very clear that I was going to write about this, and I was going to make music out of that experience. It took a few months before the songs started coming — and then they became the focal point of this...

EDINBURG — At midnight in South Texas, nearly every bed is full in a low-slung building housing some of the sickest COVID-19 patients near the U.S.-Mexico border. Many patients in this unit, a hospice center at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance remade into a coronavirus ward, are sedated, intubated and attached by a tangle of cords to the whirring and beeping machines keeping them alive. Some are in individual rooms; dozens more are lined up in vacated bay divided into a grid by curtains to separate beds. “How many more are coming?” a nurse asks around 11 p.m. No one can be sure. Some of these patients will go home and complete their recoveries. Others will leave to be buried. The Rio Grande Valley has seen a surge in coronavirus cases, and the patients arrive daily. At least 10 were brought here from the emergency room Wednesday. More than a dozen the day before that. Some nurses tend to three patients each, instead of the usual two, and pick up extra hours. A lead nurse who clocked in at 6:45 a.m....
VIDEO6:0706:07June jobs report beats expectations—Five experts on what it means for recoveryTrading Nation Stocks moved higher on a strong June jobs report, though concerns of a rising number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. lingered. Here are five experts on what the jobs report says about the road to recovery. Austan Goolsbee, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, sees a stalemate on Capitol Hill. "Normally in the months before a presidential election, both parties are trying to create a series of show votes where they say, "We were for this, and the other guys are against it." And they don't really want to reach compromises. And so the philosophy of the CARES Act was we don't have to decide who should get relief and rescue money, everybody gets money. … And now we're coming to the spot where you've got to choose: Is the money going to go to people? Is the money going to go to small business? Should the money go to big business? And to get a strong number like this, I think actually it's...
