Lucasfilm is pulling no punches this week, as the 45th anniversary of the OG Star Wars rolls by and the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere on Disney+. But let’s change lanes from the swashbuckling space heroes and villains and over to something a little more nature-based. We’re talking Willow, the upcoming Lucasfilm-produced fantasy series based on Ron Howard’s 1988 movie of the same name. “There is a story of a child destined to be an empress, and the unlikely hero who would protect her,” a narrator proclaims at the start of the show's first teaser, ending on a surely foreboding shot of Warwick Davis as the titular Willow Ufgood. There’s also the return of the film’s iconic score by James Horner, and a flurry of magical objects—wands, glistening swords; you name it, it’s here. Joanne Whalley makes her grand return from the film as Sorsha, raising her glass at a luxurious dinner table full of silk-laden apprentices. And what in the world is coming out of the water to greet The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori? “There...

The trend for creating TV shows based on popular novels, podcasts and news articles shows no sign of slowing down, experts explain, as producers mine tried-and-tested stories with a proven track record in a bid to lure viewers. In the last week alone, The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix) and The Time Traveler's Wife (HBO, Sky Atlantic) have premiered, each based on a bestselling book that's already been made into a movie, with the latter also spawning a stage musical.  Some shows, like The Ipcress File, have already been adapted a number of times across multiple formats - but that doesn't stop producers from revisiting the same stories yet again in the hope of landing on a hit. New HBO miniseries The Staircase is based on a 2004 docuseries about the mysterious death of a crime writer's wife. The same case has also spawned at least four books (two by the man at the centre of the case); a string of podcasts (including a BBC deep-dive); and a Lifetime movie.  Same, same... but different: New HBO miniseries The Staircase (starring Colin Firth...
With Kyle Lowry to miss a fourth consecutive playoff game with a strained left hamstring, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Tuesday that the team is not basing the veteran point guard’s status on where the team stands in a series. “We’re not basing any of these decisions on whether we’re winning or losing,” Spoelstra said after the team’s practice, ahead of Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. Game 2 against the Philadelphia 76ers. “This is what we think is best right now.” The Heat lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals series 1-0 after Monday night’s 106-92 victory. Spoelstra, though, said it does make it easier knowing Gabe Vincent is capable of stepping in, with the Heat 3-0 this postseason with Vincent starting and Lowry sitting. “And we’ve had enough opportunities this season with either Kyle or Jimmy [Butler] out where Gabe has been able to step into the starting unit and everybody feels confident that we can function on both sides of the floor. “And that’s a credit to him, of earning that trust of everybody, players and staff alike. And that’s...
Stephen Dunn/Getty Images HBO has responded to Jerry West after the NBA legend demanded a legal retraction of his portrayal in Winning Time. “HBO has a long history of producing compelling content drawn from actual facts and events that are fictionalized in part for dramatic purposes. Winning Time is not a documentary and has not been presented as such,” read the statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “However, the series and its depictions are based on extensive factual research and reliable sourcing, and HBO stands resolutely behind our talented creators and cast who have brought a dramatization of this epic chapter in basketball history to the screen.” The statement comes after West declared his depiction in the series as an often intoxicated hothead “a deliberately false characterization.” West and his attorneys went as far as to pen a lengthy legal letter to the series’ executive producer Adam McKay, as well as to HBO and its parent company Warner Bros.-Discovery, writing that the Winning Time “caused great distress to Jerry and his family.” West’s letter demanded a legal retraction from HBO, accusing...
As consumers dump their Netflix subscriptions in droves, the far-left streamer is reportedly taking an ax to its animation department, cutting programming and firing employees in the latest sign that the company’s days of carefree spending are over. Netflix laid off its director of creative leadership and development for original animation, Phil Rynda, along with some of his staff,  according to a report from The Wrap. The streamer has also pulled the plug on existing and in-development shows. Some Netflix animation employees have also accused the streamer of using manipulated data to justify the cancellations. Planned animated series based on Jeff Smith’s popular comic book series Bone and Roald Dahl’s novel The Twits have been cancelled. An upcoming series based on Lauren Faust’s Toil and Trouble will also not move forward. Watch below:  A number of existing shows that were critically acclaimed though not necessarily popular hits have also been cancelled, according to The Wrap. The changes in Netflix’s animation department come as the streamer enacts major changes after reporting a loss of 200,000 subscribers for the first quarter and a projected loss...
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court agreed Monday to review a copyright dispute involving works of art by the artist Andy Warhol that were based on a photograph of the musician Prince. A lower court had at first said the artwork created before Warhol’s 1987 death was “fair use” of the photograph by Lynn Goldsmith because it had transformed the original work. But the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed. The Supreme Court said it would review that ruling. The case will be argued sometime after the court begins its new term in October. Warhol created a series of 16 artworks based on a 1981 photo of Prince taken by Goldsmith, a pioneering photographer known for portraits of famous musicians. The series came about after Vanity Fair commissioned Warhol to create an illustration of Prince in 1984 to accompany a magazine article. The magazine paid $400 to license Goldsmith’s photograph for Warhol to use as a reference to create his own work. The agreement limited the use of the photograph to the single instance in the magazine...

As The Batman finishes out a strong first weekend in theaters, DC is raising the bar yet again with another gritty metropolitan adaptation heading to HBO Max. Taking a page out of thrillers like Prisoners and Searching, Rosario Dawson’s Alma is on the hunt for her missing child in the trailer for mini-series DMZ. Alma’s got her work cut out for her as she barrels down a version of New York that’s shockingly even more terrifying than the horrors of Times Square today. DMZ sees your off-brand Elmo and raises it…an actual cheetah?! “What we had was so good,” the gruff lead laments in the clip. “What we had was family.” Such is the mournful cry of a vengeful mother, ready to reclaim her son and start afresh. There are a few barriers in the way, though: for one, Manhattan has been demilitarized, with crime on the rise and danger lurking around every corner. Fans of the recent HBO Max hit Station Eleven will enjoy the foliage-filled dystopia introduced by the streamer’s upcoming release. It’s the Golden Age...

HBO's Downton Abbey creator has offered a sort of prequel to his star-show. The Gilded Age is set to premiere on January 24 with an extra long first episode. 2Cynthia Nixon (left) and Christine Baranski (right) in new HBO historical drama, The Gilded Age Is The Gilded Age based on a true story? Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, has cooked up a new show: The Gilded Age on HBO. While characters are fictional, the setting is not. The historical drama depicts the lives of high society New York City in the late 1800s - often coined 'The Gilded Age.' The era was marked by growing wealth inequality. The word, 'gilding,' is the process of applying a thin layer of gold over a less valuable material to make it look more luxurious. The fictionalized characters represent real society back then, during a period of time where not everything was as perfect as it was made out to be. Film producers are planning a woke version of the Harry Potter movies in which the magical characters will be played by transgender and non-binary actors. In what will be seen by many as a challenge to J.K. Rowling, who was attacked for questioning the claim that trans women are identical to biological women, the filmmakers are seeking a more diverse line-up for the starring roles. They are insisting that some of the characters for the new versions – to be aired as a ‘web series’ – cannot be played by white actors, including the starring role of James Potter, father of young wizard Harry. According to casting notes, that role is only open to an actor who is ‘Asian, black, African descent, ethnically ambiguous, multiracial, Indigenous peoples, Latino, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, South Asian, Indian, Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander’. Producers have not specified who they want to play Lily Evans, Harry’s mother, but have said they want a ‘gender-nonconforming, non-binary, trans female’. American film producers are planning to release a new Harry Potter movie featuring transgender and non-binary actors. Pictured,...

NEW YORK (AP) — Most TV dramas try to tell stories over a few years with maybe half a dozen central characters. The new series “Foundation” is a bit more ambitious — try 400 years and 25 million worlds. To say it’s sweeping doesn’t do it justice. World-building is one thing. “Foundation,” a four-year project debuting on Apple TV+ on Friday, is galaxy-building. “I love being transported in story. I love epics. I love generational sagas. And so I just wanted to go for it,” said David S. Goyer, the series’ co-creator, executive producer and showrunner. “Foundation” is built on author Isaac Asimov’s short stories that he started writing just after World War II as a 21-year-old and have gone on to become a cornerstone of the sci-fi genre. The series is ambitious enough to redefine sci-fi onscreen. The saga begins 12,000 years in the future. Under the rule of the Galactic Empire, humanity has spread to the far corners of the galaxy and it has been peaceful, though authoritarian. Brilliant scientist Hari Seldon (played by Jared Harris) has...

On a recent Wednesday afternoon, Jimmy Williams sat on a folding chair under the shade of a canopy at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Plastic pallets were laid out in front of him holding dozens of pots of the edible plants he grows at Logan’s Gardens, his Silver Lake nursery. As customers knelt down to look at the offerings, including peppers, radishes, basil, oregano, chives and lime, one person approached the canopy and asked for Williams by name. The 79-year-old enthusiastically jumped up out to give her a master class in gardening in order to help with the problem she had about growing strawberries in her greenhouse. “That’s our main thing, to get people the right information. We got to tell them how to grow them, the right size pot, when to water them and not to water them. A lot of people just don’t know, so that’s our job, to tell them,” said Williams. He’s run the nursery for about two decades and has always shared his knowledge of plants. One of his first students was his son, Logan...

IDW Comics Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Say what you want about J.J. Abrams’ entry into the “Star Trek” story; he brought the franchise back to life after a very quiet period. Unlike when “Star Wars” went on hiatus from 1983 — at the height of its popularity — “Star Trek” went dormant because of “franchise fatigue.” This is what Trek boss Rick Berman said after “Star Trek: Enterprise” was canceled after its fourth season.   Thanks to the Abrams’ movies, “Star Trek (2009),” “Into Darkness,” and “Beyond,” the franchise was reinvigorated and is now flying at warp speed on Paramount+ and should soon be back on the big screen as well. While some say he ruined “Star Wars,” others give Abrams a little credit, saying he “saved Star Trek” and is well on his way to “saving cinema.” Bennett Saved ‘Star Trek’ Play Harve Bennett "The man who saved Star Trek" passes away in Medford – Mar 7th, 2015For more, visit kobi5.com – Copyright KOBI-TV. It was undoubtedly one of the great questions about the ambitious Apple TV + series based on Isaac Asimov’s trilogy of books, considered absolute classics of literary science fiction. With an argument that expands over the centuries, how to maintain a constant argument and characters, if in the books themselves they change according to events seen from a gigantic perspective? The new trailer for the series commanded by showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer does not completely clarify those doubts, but it does give some clue. The constant presence of the protagonist Hari Seldon, the beginning of the fall of the Empire and the explanation of what psychohistory is and the first steps of the Foundation, which are guessed in different images of the trailer, suggests that the series will take elements from the initial section of the first book in this first season of ten chapters. It may even turn to the two late prequels to the original trilogy, ‘Prelude to the Foundation’ and ‘Towards the Foundation’ (1993). Spectacularity and diversity According to the times, the Apple TV...
Last week we learned that Hulu is already planning the end of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. But let’s not be alarmed so quickly. Bruce Miller, one of the main producers and scriptwriters of the series, has wanted to complete the statements of his partner Jordan Helman that they are already thinking about the best way to end the series. In statements to Deadline, Miller has clarified that “he never seeks to finish ‘The Handmaid’s Tale” and that many steps for the future of the series are still being considered: I work with a group of very simple people; we have a lovely group of screenwriters, a spectacular group of actors and directors, and our team. What they did this year was incredible. They did this whole series during Covid. We filmed everything for two weeks. We wrote each script so that we could change the story so that we could do it with different actors, but they were able to do it themselves. I was here in Los Angeles and Liz was there as executive producer Elisabeth Moss with all...
