The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot released Monday its witness list for Tuesday’s hearing on former President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign against state elections officials. The hearing's witnesses will include Georgia Secretary of state Brad Raffensperger (R), who resisted pressure from Trump to block the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory in the state. FIVE JAN. 6 HEARING TAKEAWAYS ON PENCE BUCKING TRUMP OVER THE 2020 ELECTION COUNT Other witnesses will include Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers (R); Gabriel Sterling, Raffensperger’s top deputy; and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, a former Georgia election worker. Raffensperger, as the state’s top elections official, defended Georgia’s election process as Trump and his allies circulated unfounded claims that the election was stolen from the former president. In a transcript of a now-infamous Jan. 2, 2021, phone call, Trump tried to pressure Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to swing the state’s election in his favor rather than Biden's. “So what are we going to do here, folks? I only need 11,000 votes. Fellas, I need 11,000 votes. Give...

The Sundance Film Festival is returning to the Utah mountains in January armed with documentaries about Bill Cosby, Princess Diana, Kanye West and Lucille Ball and the directorial debuts of Eva Longoria, Tig Notaro and Jesse Eisenberg. Festival organizers unveiled the lineup for the 2022 edition on Thursday, which includes 82 feature-length films culled from over 3,700 submissions. "This year’s program reflects the unsettling and uncertain times we’ve been living in for the past year and a half," said Kim Yutani, Sundance’s director of programming. As in years past, the festival boasts a robust documentary lineup, including "We Need to Talk About Cosby," in which director W. Kamau Bell attempts to examine the art and artist question as it applies to the actor/comedian, who spent time in prison before his sexual assault conviction was overturned. SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL TO GO MOSTLY VIRTUAL FOR 2021 Festival director Tabitha Jackson says the Cosby doc is, "A real cultural analysis of what happened." "Lucy and Desi," which marks Amy Poehler’s documentary debut, and "The Princess" from director Ed Perkins are also in the...
The Houston Astros are making some drastic changes to avoid being eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 World Series.  Alex Bregman and the Houston Astros are struggling lately. The Atlanta Braves have been able to routinely shut Houston down at the plate and, well, Bregman has been struggling more than most. As a result, Houston is trying to shake things up in Game 5 of the 2021 World Series. That includes moving Bregman down in the batting order. World Series Game 5 Lineup Alex Bregman drops to seventh in the order. Thoughts? pic.twitter.com/DHb9J0GbTD — Climbing Tals Hill (@astrosCTH) October 31, 2021 It’s hard to fault Houston for moving Bregman down in the lineup. This team is facing elimination and needs to start getting hits sooner rather than later if it hopes to have a remote shot at winning this year’s World Series. Bregman hasn’t been great at the plate lately. While he had a .270 batting average in the regular season, Bregman has struggled to get a .226 batting average this postseason. So far in the...
Illustration by Chris Johnson Leonardo. Michelangelo. Raphael. Donatello. All Renaissance master artists. All Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, too. “There are too many layers of genius to unpack, really,” Mergeculture wrote in a press release for its latest show, “Straight from the Sewer,” which opens on Friday in downtown Tampa in conjunction with the monthly Bloom block party on Franklin Street. The show features work from a dozen artists—including Meow Wolf’s Nico Salazar and Birdcap, which painted one of the best murals in Tampa Bay—from across the country and was inspired by a conversation between Mergeculture Gallery’s co-curator Michelle Sawyer and Tampa producer Wally Rios. Also on the artist lineup are local favorites like past CL cover artist Peachmoon, 3LB God and Alejandro Algarin (aka Maff Bug), plus a music lineup that features some of the city’s best producers and rappers (Rios, who’s already done “Naruto” beat tapes in releasing a Turtles-inspired one on Friday). As part of the Bloom party, nearby Magnanimous Brewing is releasing new beers (“Rahzar” and “Tokka” imperial sours with vanilla plus raspberry or blueberry). Gaze...

Between the Galaxy S21 series and the foldables it plans to release later this year, Samsung is pretty much set with premium smartphones for 2021. For anyone who doesn’t want to drop flagship levels of cash, though, Samsung just pulled back the curtain on a bevy of new affordable models for the US, including the company’s cheapest 5G smartphone yet. Samsung At the top of the range is the $499 Galaxy A52 5G, which Samsung talked about at length during its Galaxy Awesome launch event back in March. In case the salient details escape you, the A52 packs a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 4,500mAh battery, a quartet of rear cameras headlined by a 64-megapixel sensor, and one of Qualcomm’s relatively fresh Snapdragon 750G chipsets. As we mentioned last time, the A52 5G is in some ways a more impressive device than the LTE-only Galaxy A72 Samsung announced at the same time, which explains why Samsung didn’t bother bringing that pricier model to the US this year.  With all that said, there is one...
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico Film Office says four independent feature films headline the state's latest lineup of projects either recently in production or about to start up. The other productions consist of an independent silent short comedy, an independent short film and docuseries pilot, the office said Friday. The independent features include “Harem Complex Part 1," billed as a love story revolving around a young couple, and “Peace River," a drama about a rodeo cowboy and military veteran whose faith guides him through personal struggles. The other two independent films are “Land of Dreams,” a political satire, and “Terror at Bigfoot Pond," which involves young adults who find trouble while camping. In an ideal world, we’d always keep a hand free to protect our precious gaming gear. But for those times when you’re busy, Ikea has released a ¥129.00 (around $20) wooden hand to act as a caretaker — just one of dozens of new gaming products just launched in China. As Ikea explains it, the Lånespelare accessories stand (or the Gaming Hand, as we’ll be calling it) “takes care of cables, headsets and other gadgets that you want tidied away, yet still have within reach.” Sounds, uh, handy? Ikea’s Gaming Hand is part of the company’s recently announced lineup of gaming furniture and accessories, which it says was developed in collaboration with Asus’s Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand. There are over 30 products in the range, which include everything from gaming chairs and desks, to mouse mats and a ring light. Behold, gamer drawers.Image: Ikea Gamer chair.Image: Ikea A neck pillow…Image: Ikea … which...
Samsung’s new line of Galaxy S21 smartphones launched less than two weeks ago, but Amazon, B&H Photo, and Best Buy have already marked down the phones to their lowest prices to date, with up to $200 in savings. If the Galaxy S21 is the phone you’re looking for, you can grab an unlocked model with 128GB of storage for only $700 or a 256GB model for $750. It includes a 6.2-inch 1080p screen with refresh rates of up to 120Hz and is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. My colleague, Dieter Bohn, praised the Galaxy S21 in his review for having a fast processor, nice screen, and good battery life. The S21 Plus normally starts at $1,000, but you can grab an unlocked model with 128GB of storage for $800 or a 256GB model for $850. It includes a 6.7-inch 1080p screen with adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The Galaxy S21 Plus also includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens on the back, in addition to a 10-megapixel selfie...
Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) has unveiled its varied, eclectic, and very cool-looking lineup of new gaming laptops for 2021. The highlight, and the product I’m both very excited and very confused about, is the ROG Flow X13. It’s the company’s first 2-in-1 convertible gaming laptop. That’s right — a 2-in-1 gaming laptop. You don’t see that every day. What’s more, as you may have deduced from the name, the X13 is a 13-inch convertible gaming laptop. As you can probably see from the above picture, the X13 doesn’t look like your typical gaming rig. It’s the type of thing I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone whip out in a class or a meeting. Portability is a theme here: Asus says you’ll get up to 10 hours of video playback on a charge and that the 100-watt USB-C charger delivers 50 percent in 30 minutes. You can choose between a 120Hz FHD touch display or a 3840 x 2400 touch display. Either way, you get a 16:10 aspect ratio with extra vertical space for multitasking. All of...
According to LG, 2021 represents a major leap for its OLED TVs thanks to a new “OLED Evo” panel that outputs a brighter picture. Brightness has remained a winning factor for LCD TVs over many years; despite perfect blacks and amazing viewing angles, sometimes an OLED set just won’t get the job done if you stick it in an ultra-bright room. But LG says the Evo panel found in its new G1 series — succeeding 2020’s GX lineup — can crank higher than any of its previous OLED TVs for improved luminosity and HDR. LG likens this achievement to past OLED milestones like 4K HDR and the introduction of 8K. The G1 series will come in 77-, 65-, and 55-inch sizes. It shares the same brains — the fourth generation of LG’s alpha9 processor — with the C1 series. Both lines feature improved image processing and can now “analyze the type of scene being shown and improve the picture accordingly.” Image: LG Last year, LG’s CX OLED was picked by...
Knicks rookie point guard Immanuel Quickley won’t start in Wednesday night’s season-opener against the Pacers — but Mitchell Robinson will Quickley, who became a preseason revelation and started at point guard in the preseason finale, was set to come off the bench as head coach Tom Thibodeau stuck with veteran point guard Elfrid Payton. Thibodeau said Quickley would still be in his 10-man rotation, indicating he could finish the game. The former Kentucky stud added electricity and outside shooting, the latter a major weakness of Payton’s. “I think it’s a compilation of things,” Thibodeau said when asked why Payton would start. “It’s how things have gone in practice, the games, the way groups play with each other. And starting has never been as important as finishing for me. We’ll be looking at the different combinations, the guys that are playing well, performing well, they’ll be the guys that are out there. “We have young guys that will continue to improve. We have the right veterans around them that can help teach the young guys the tricks...

Besides the bonus game, Sony is hosting a free online weekend starting on July 4th. If you don’t subscribe to PS Plus, you can play some of your multiplayer games online without a membership. The company is also giving away a PS Plus-inspired theme for a limited time.  Now that it’s 10-years-old, it’s hard to imagine what the modern gaming landscape would look like without the influence of PS Plus. When Sony started giving away monthly free games in 2012, Microsoft matched the service with Games with Gold in 2013. Players have since come to expect that they’ll get some free games for subscribing to a monthly gaming service, so much so that when it came time for Google to launch Stadia, even it made sure to include complimentary titles for subscribers.
