Tens of thousands of students at the City University of New York have signed a petition to cancel an opera about Emmett Till, the victim of a high-profile 1955 lynching in Mississippi, saying that the school should no longer host the show because it was written by a white woman.  John Jay College of Criminal Justice student Mya Bishop created the Change.org petition in an attempt to halt the continuation of 'Emmett Till, A New American Opera' at the school's Gerald W. Lynch Theatre. In the petition's description, she wrote that the show is all about playwright Clare Coss' 'white guilt' rather than the appalling killing of Till, 14, for allegedly flirting with a white woman.   His murder remains one of the most notorious race-hate killings in US history, and helped galvanize the era's iconic civil rights movement against racial injustice. The play, which features black composer Mary D. Watkins' work, 'explores themes of social justice, the flaws within the justice system, white silence and allyship, racial inequality and the complexities of the human experience,' its synopsis reads.  More than...
Popular western actor Sam Elliott, who stars in the Yellowstone prequel 1883, went on a rant over New Zealand director Jane Campion's Power of the Dog because of its implications to homosexual cowboys in the West.  Speaking with Marc Maron on the WTF podcast on Monday, Elliott, 77,  referred to Champion's Oscar-nominated film as a 'piece of s**t' and said he took personal offense to its portrayal of the American West.  'What the f**k does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American west,' Elliott, whose career is centered around the western genre, said.  'And why in the f**k does she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, 'This is the way it was.' That fucking rubbed me the wrong way, pal.'  Elliot said his main gripe stemmed from the implications that the character Phil Burbank, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, was a closeted gay man and that the movie over-critiqued the masculine image of the west.  'They're all running around in chaps and no shirts,' Elliot said of the movie's characters, comparing...

ALSIP, Ill. (CBS) — At the end of last winter, a total of 259 people were all ticketed after parking in a snow route in Alsip. As we approach this snowy season, CBS 2’s Marie Saavedra reported Friday that one of those people is still fighting to get the village’s parking rules changed. READ MORE: City Was Warned About Thousands of Corroding Light Poles But Failed to Fix Many, CBS 2 Investigation FindsWe first met Shellie Lewis back in March on a cold day outside Alsip’s Village Hall. It was about this ticket she got for parking in the street in front of her condo after 3 inches of snow. But there was no street sign that said not to do so. “I was amazed – kind of flabbergasted,” Lewis said at the time, “because I’m used to literally everything being posted.” At her day in court in February, she paid the ticket – along with 258 other people, all cited for the same thing. “The person holding court explains to us that every street in the...
A DISGRUNTLED daughter-in-law has revealed that her mother-in-law wouldn’t stop nagging her even as she was in labor.  The mother-in-law was upset with the name chosen for the baby about to be born and decided it was an appropriate time to keep fighting for the name she wanted. 3A woman is revealing a disturbing story about her mother-in-lawCredit: TikTok 3Her mother-in-law hated the baby name chosen, and decided to complain about it while her daughter-in-law was in laborCredit: TikTok “For our first child, my husband and I came up with the name pretty quickly,” the mother said in a video she shared online. She added that they even ordered custom keepsakes with the baby’s name on them because they were "so excited." She then recalled that her mother-in-law made “a few comments” during her pregnancy about how she preferred a more traditional Indian name and told her and her husband they should reconsider.  Since the couple ignored the mother’s pleas about the name, the mother decided to revisit the topic while her daughter-in-law was eight centimeters dilated and in labor. ...
One of its stars desperately wanted to be in it but is in prison, the other is so determined to stay out of it that she’s gone to court. As for the supporting cast of characters, well, many of them have returned and they’re as outlandish as ever. Tiger King is back and the surprising monster streaming hit of the pandemic promises to be just as deranged second time round. Tiger King, alias Joe Exotic, suited those crazy times to a tee — a mullet-haired, assault rifle-brandishing, drug-abusing, gay polygamist, hillbilly showman. He ran an anarchic roadside zoo in Oklahoma full of lions and tigers, and was fighting a vicious battle with his nemesis, Florida big cats rights activist Carole Baskin. She accused him of abusing the animals, illegally breeding them to supply his lucrative cub-petting business. He accused her of having killed her second husband and feeding him to her big cats. The show rapidly became one of streaming giant Netflix’s biggest ever hits, watched by 64 million households in its first month, March 2020. The eight-part series, titled...

A woman at a school board meeting in Chandler County, Arizona went on an unhinged rant against Covid-19 vaccines on Wednesday. She called the vaccines a “deadly poison” that is being pushed by Jewish-controlled pharmaceutical companies. She was having, as they sarcastically say online, a normal one. The woman identified herself as Melanie Rettler, a veterinarian. “I’m a cloning expert with 35 years experience,” she declared. “And I was a consultant to the CDC. I’ve owned a pharmacy. I wanna tell you that this vaccine, this Covid vaccine is a deadly poison. That’s it. I’m just gonna tell you that. Everybody that takes it is damaging their immune system and they’re talking about this [being] given to children now. It’s going to destroy them. You need to do more research on it. I’m an expert on it, and I’m telling you that’s what it’s doing.” She then mentioned “CRT” or critical race theory and claimed that “one race” owns every pharmaceutical company. Her remarks are quoted in full to convey their sheer insanity: You know what? You wanna talk about...

Katie Couric wrote sympathetic texts to Matt Lauer after he had been fired for sexual misconduct including one that read: 'I love you and care about you deeply'. Just as it was revealed that Lauer had preyed on multiple female producers at NBC, Couric texted him 'I am crushed', in one of several messages she reproduces in her new memoir. In Going There, Couric explains that hosting Today with Lauer for nine years left her feeling sorry for him in spite of the appalling allegations. She writes that Lauer was a 'decent' man, worried how he would break the news to his kids and that it felt 'heartless to abandon him.'  Lauer was fired by NBC in November 2017 after reports he had crossed the line with numerous women at the network over many years. In her new memoir, Katie Couric reveals she sent messages of support to former colleague Matt Lauer after he was fired from NBC for sexual misconduct in 2017  Reports said that he gave one woman a sex toy and an explicit note saying how he...
Two days before the death of a NSW woman who had undergone decorative body modification 'blood and pus came gushing out' of the side of her hand after the area was reopened, a friend has told a court. Weeks earlier, the woman had a plastic snowflake implanted between the bone and skin of the back of her hand by body modifier Brendan Leigh Russell. Problems with the insert meant she went back to him to have it attended to.  'When he cut open her hand to reposition the snowflake, all this blood and pus came gushing out the side,' the friend told the NSW District Court on Monday. 'I then later witnessed that on the video (filmed by the deceased woman).' Brendan Leigh Russell (pictured), 40, has pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of a woman after her death in April 2017 Russell, a body modifier known by moniker BSlice Dot Com, has pleaded not guilty to the woman's manslaughter after inserting the plastic snowflake in his parlour in a Central Coast shopping centre in March 2017. Ruby Bridges poses, in 2013, with one of the marshals who escorted her into school in 1960. A white mother of three is angry about how race is taught in the public schools in her Tennessee county, and between the details of her campaign and Reuters’ reporting, it is a recipe for a head explosion. Let’s start with this: Robin Steenman is a mother of three … but her only school-age child attends private school.  And what is Steenman angry about? The teaching of children’s books about Martin Luther King Jr. and Ruby Bridges, which she argues violates a recently passed Tennessee law against teaching critical race theory, including the idea that anyone is “privileged” because of their race, or any teaching that makes any child feel “discomfort, guilt [or] anguish” because of their race or sex. It is just about impossible to overstate how far from actual critical race theory these second-grade-level books are. But for right-wing extremists looking for examples of the boogeyman of “critical race theory,” they’re good enough, and Reuters wasn’t worried about how difficult it would be to overstate that...
The fact that Petito's fiancé Brian Laundrie, for example, returned to his Florida home without Petito nearly two weeks before she was reported missing and the fact that Petito chronicled the couple's adventures on social media are driving national interest in the case. What makes the case even more odd is the encounter Petito and Laundrie had with Utah law enforcement last month after an anonymous 911 caller alerted police to a potential domestic violence situation between the couple. The National Park Service parks ranger who responded to the incident now says that she warned Petito about "toxic" signs in her relationship. Magnifying interest in the case are the mysterious whereabouts of Laundrie himself. Not only did he refuse to speak with law enforcement, which was his right, but the 23-year-old has been missing for a week. Police are continuing to search for Laundrie in Florida. If Reid is truly concerned about disproportionate media coverage given to missing white women, perhaps she may consider dedicating some of her prime-time national TV show to sharing...

OAKLAND — Eleven days after a Martinez man was shot to death near an Oakland park, police here received an anonymous tip warning that there was a robbery crew moving around the city, targeting sex workers and johns — with the tipster giving them the nicknames of two members. A month after receiving that tip, police arrested a 20-year-old woman in connection with the homicide, identified her as the person who made the call, and issued warrants for the two people she allegedly named to police, according to investigators. The arrest wasn’t made until after the woman admitted to her mother — while sitting in a police interrogation room, with cameras rolling — that she accidentally shot the victim, police said. The woman, identified in court documents as Jaylynnkelly Walton, of Oakland, was charged Thursday with murdering Francisco Rosa-Rosales, 43, in a July 6 shooting near San Antonio Park. Walton was arrested Aug. 23; she made her initial appearance in court Thursday morning but didn’t enter a plea, according to court records. Rosa-Rosales was found shot around 10:12 p.m. in...
