Michael Eisner had an idea. And it wasn’t a very popular one at first. The visionary Disney leader, who served of CEO of the house built by Mickey Mouse from 1984 to 2005, was interested in turning the 1994 animated “Lion King” movie into a stage musical. So, he took the idea to the film’s creative team. “He first asked everybody’s opinion — ‘What do you guys think about putting this on the stage?’” remembers Roger Allers, who co-directed the blockbuster film with Rob Minkoff. “And all of us around the table went, ‘We think that’s an awful idea.’” Turns out some members of the creative team had actually already discussed the possibility of a musical, but, Allers says, “All we could picture were, like, people in great big fuzzy animal costumes and we thought, ‘That will be ridiculous. It won’t have any impact at all.’” But despite all the negative feedback Eisner got, the CEO decided to green-light the project anyway. “He asked everybody’s opinion and then he said, ‘Well, we’re going to do it.’” Allers says with a...
THRILLING EVE Muirhead won Team GB’s first and only gold medal of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics as they swept to curling glory. On the day before the 20-year anniversary of Rhona Martin’s famous heroics at Salt Lake City, Team Muirhead wrote their own name into the sporting record books. 5Eve Muirhead and Co jump for joy as they clutch their gold medalsCredit: PA 5Team GB are sportingly congratulated by their Japanese opponentsCredit: Alamy The all-Scottish quartet of Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jennifer Dodds and Hailey Duff were in dominant form as they crushed Japan 10-3 at the Beijing Ice Cube. When it was over, the tears flowed and the team celebrated wildly in a group hug. Victory with one end left to spare was revenge for the bronze medal defeat to the Japanese four years ago in PyeongChang, a result that had some questioning Muirhead’s position at the helm. Selected as the Olympic skip in 2009 at the age of just 19, Muirhead has finally fulfilled her own destiny on the ice and underlined her status as one of Britain’s...
Two things stand out from the grovelling legal statement that Prince Andrew issued last night. One is the absence of any suggestion that he might be innocent of the very serious sexual offences that Virginia Roberts (now Mrs Giuffre) has been publicly accusing him of for seven long years. Often, when vast sums of money are paid to settle a high-profile legal case, the person writing the cheque gets to insert a clause that might vaguely exonerate them. It tends to contain words to the effect that they deny wrongdoing. Although there is no suggestion that Andrew is, in fact, guilty, that no such privilege was afforded to him reflects the degree to which he has been forced to concede defeat. Put simply, his tin-eared response to this long-running scandal has seen him slowly, but surely, run out of options to avoid a costly and squalid court case that would further damage the British monarchy, perhaps irreparably. The only option remaining was to accept this abject public humiliation. Friends: The Duke even invited the American to social events Balmoral and...

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN - The United States beat Japan 2-1 on Monday in an inconsequential game to end round-robin play. But the U.S. team's failure to record a hit against a third-string Japanese pitcher until the sixth inning demonstrated the challenge it faces in the gold-medal matchup between the two teams. U.S. batters did race their way into three hits and a run against Yamamoto Fujita in the sixth, and Kelsey Stewart shot a tie-breaking homer to end the game an inning later. But, as United States' 3-1 loss to Japan in the Beijing 2008 finals showed, counting on lucky hits late in the game delivers inconsistent returns. Failing to hit in key moments foiled the United States against Yukiko Ueno of Japan in 2008, the last time softball appeared at the Olympics. Ueno, 39, will be back in Tuesday's final, as will U.S. hurlers Cat Osterman and Monica Abbott. Overall, the United States finished round-robin play on Monday scoring nine runs on 27 hits with Stewart's blast over right their lone home run. By contrast, Japan had double the runs...

View the original article to see embedded media. If Canada is going to win its first Concacaf Gold Cup since 2000, it will have to do so with a significantly depleted squad. Canada's 1–0 defeat to the U.S. men's national team on Sunday was more costly than just finishing second in the group, with forward Ayo Akinola tearing his ACL and forward Cyle Larin also suffering a leg injury that rules both attacking stars out for the rest of the competition. The injury to Akinola, who had just chosen Canada over the U.S. for his international allegiance, also "likely" ends his 2021 MLS season, according to Toronto FC, and also potentially rules him out for the entirety of World Cup qualifying, which runs from September 2021 to March 2022. View the original article to see embedded media. The Concacaf Gold Cup’s group stage typically is a perfunctory procession lacking in tension or intrigue. But there was the U.S. men’s national team on a warm Sunday evening in Kansas City, Kan., facing some first-round stakes. Three points against Canada would seal first place in the group (the visitors needed only a draw thanks to their goal differential advantage). More importantly, a U.S. win would probably mean a more forgiving draw in the tournament’s knockout rounds. That’s about as much pressure as you’re going to find at this stage of the biennial confederation championship. Toss in the budding rivalry between the northern neighbors, and this was an early Gold Cup game with more subplots than usual. “There’ll be a bit of a final atmosphere...
The 25 most memorable fictional political villains Where People From New York State Are Moving to the Most The USA and Canada want the same thing in their final group-stage matchup at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup: to finish as the winner of Group B and avoid a potential matchup with Mexico in the semifinals. But it's the Canadians who have the edge going in. Both teams are tied with six points and have mathematically qualified for the quarterfinals, but because of one more goal scored, Canada owns the tiebreaker and can finish first in the group with two results against the USA: a win or draw. Despite a 6-1 win in its last outing, the USA will have to win at all costs or risk facing the Mexican national team in the semis should Mexico top its group and both teams advance to that stage. Dustin Johnson was never going to the Olympics. Justin Thomas was never going to miss them. And then there was Patrick Cantlay, who didn't have a choice.
