A four-month-old baby was allegedly wrenched from the arms of his parents and tossed to his death by a raging troop of monkeys in India last week. The horrifying incident took place in the rural village of Dunka, close to Bareilly in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where Nirdesh Upadhyay was standing on the terrace of his three-story house with his wife and their baby son. The trio were enjoying a lazy Friday evening up on the terrace when a troop of the primates clambered onto the roof and surrounded them. After futile efforts to bat the monkeys away, the new parents ran towards the stairs in an attempt to escape but Nirdesh, who was carrying his son, stumbled and dropped the child.  In a split second before either parent could react, one of the monkeys grabbed the baby boy by the hand and hurled him off the roof.  Distraught, the parents managed to get back inside the house and tore downstairs to their son's aid, but the infant reportedly died at the scene. The incident is now...

MADRID (AP) — The third edition of the Nations League begins this week with many participants already thinking about the World Cup. National teams will get a rare opportunity to play several matches in a row — practically serving as a preseason — as the international dates were moved to June because of the World Cup beginning in November. Some teams will play four matches in June and two more in September to finish the group stage of the biennial Nations League ahead of the World Cup in Qatar. “This is a competition that is really close to the World Cup, so obviously these matches will be meaningful,” Portugal midfielder William Carvalho said. The Nations League starts later Wednesday with Wales visiting Poland in the top-tier League A. On Thursday, the highlight will be the match between Spain, last year’s runner-up, and Portugal, the inaugural winner of the competition. “We are already thinking about Portugal, it’s the start of this Nations League and we want to make it to the Final Four and, above all, prepare for the...
Erik Spoelstra is not a doctor and doesn’t pretend to be as he coaches the Miami Heat. So whether it is the damaged thumb ligament, orbital fracture or concussion that has had Joel Embiid first compromised and then sidelined during these NBA playoffs, Spoelstra has gameplanned as if the Philadelphia 76ers could center reemerge in the mix. “You have to plan for it. Whether he does or not, it would be irresponsible not to,” Spoelstra said, as the Heat set their focus on Friday’s 7 p.m. Game 3 at Wells Fargo Center, with a 2-0 lead in this best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. “I mean it changes dramatically. You’re talking about MVP talent, you know. So we’ll just have to see. “We knew that this series was going to shift and was going to change pretty dramatically. It’s better for it to change dramatically when we’re able to get a couple of wins. But, yeah, he changes the equation quite a bit.” In contrast to Spoelstra, the 76ers have taken the approach that there are no guarantees with Embiid. “If...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Collin Gillespie’s knee injury put a damper on Villanova’s March last season, leaving the Wildcats without one of the steadiest floor leaders in college basketball. Villanova did its best without Gillespie’s shooting and grittiness, but ended up bowing out in the Sweet 16. Now that Gillespie’s back, the Wildcats are back in the Final Four and it’s no coincidence. “His presence out there is so important to us, whether he’s scoring or not,” Wright said. “He’s our leader and the guys respect him so much.” Gillespie returned the Final Four for the second time in his career this week in New Orleans, though in a much different role. The 6-foot-3 guard was a backup as a freshman on a veteran team that won the 2018 national championship. Gillespie was named the 2021 Big East player of the year, but didn’t play in the postseason after tearing his MCL late in the regular season. Now a fifth-year senior, Gillespie has been Villanova’s unquestioned leader, providing the Wildcats with poise and clutch shooting on their road to...

JOSE GIMENEZ is a transfer target for Chelsea, according to reports. The Atletico Madrid defender, 26, joins three others on the shortlist as Thomas Tuchel eyes another leader at the back. Getty Images - Getty 2 Chelsea are eyeing a move for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez According to The Athletic, Chelsea have been keeping tabs on the Uruguayan centre-back since 2016. The 60-cap international enjoyed his breakthrough season under Diego Simeone in 2014-15 after arriving from Danubio in his homeland in 2013. Gimenez has been a mainstay in the Atleti side this season when available – but a series of injuries and a positive coronavirus test have limited him to 17 appearances. The report adds Bayern Munich man Niklas Sule and Ibrahima Konate of RB Leipzig are both high on the Stamford Bridge wishlist. The Bundesliga pair continue to be linked with a move to West London. Sule, 25, could see his minutes dry up at the Allianz Arena next season with the arrival of Dayot Upamecano. Meanwhile Konate, 21, is also wanted by the likes...

Samsung is looking at four sites in three different US states where it could build a $17 billion computer chip plant, records show. The South Korean tech giant is considering two locations in Arizona and one in New York in addition to a site in Austin, Texas, where it’s seeking nearly $1.5 billion in tax breaks for the semiconductor facility, according to documents filed with Lone Star State officials. Samsung said it’s in “active negotiations” with the other three potential hosts, each of which have offered a combination of property tax abatements, grants or tax credits to support the “highly competitive” project. The company did not identify the cities it’s courting besides Austin. But The Wall Street Journal has reported that it’s eyeing a big industrial campus in Genesee County, New York, and two sites in the Phoenix area. “All three alternative sites have the necessary land and are capable of scaling up the required infrastructure within the requisite period of time to meet the project’s accelerated timetable,” Samsung said in a submission to the Texas state comptroller’s office...

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the MTA are bringing back two hours of nighttime subway service that were eliminated during the COVID-19 crisis — as they teased a future return of 24-hour trains. Beginning next Monday, MTA officials will shut down subway service from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., compared to the 1 a.m.-to-5 a.m. shutdowns in effect since May. “New York is starting to look at a return to normalcy. As we look at the reopening of the city and the economy, we have been planning in recent weeks for our own reopening and return of overnight service,” Interim Transit President Sarah Feinberg said Monday at a press conference with Cuomo. “We have determined that a shortened overnight closure is an appropriate step forward towards the return of around-the-clock service.” The decision comes after Feinberg and MTA Chairman Pat Foye endured hours of questioning last week from city council members upset over the continued closures. Transit advocates have said increased hours of service could help stem the recent string of violence in the subway, arguing that more riders could...
By DOUG FEINBERG The NCAA plans to stage the entire women’s basketball tournament in one geographic area and San Antonio is the likely host site. The move, announced Monday, was made to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19 and matches that of the men’s tournament, which the NCAA said last month will be played in a single area — most likely Indianapolis. The women’s Final Four in 2021 was already set for San Antonio and the NCAA has begun preliminary talks with the Texas city to hold the entire 64-team tournament in the area. “Conducting the championship in one geographic region allows for more planning and execution of safeguards that provide potential benefits for promoting the health and safety of student athletes, the NCAA membership and all individuals involved in the championship,” said Nina King, the NCAA women’s basketball committee chair and senior athletic director at Duke. “By making this difficult decision now, it allows for an earlier opportunity to work proactively with local public health officials within the host communities and ensures that the identified...

IN a plea for sympathy that has now become infamous, Mick Philpott and wife Mairead faced the cameras, just four days after the death of their six children, and begged for the family to be left alone. A year later, in April 2013, the evil pair were jailed after being found guilty of setting fire to their house in Derby - killing Jade Philpott 10, and her brothers Duwayne, 13, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six, and Jayden, five. 14The evil pair appear on This Morning, before the 2012 fireCredit: Rex Features 14Mairead Philpott was released from prison this weekCredit: Dan Charity - The Sun This week Mairead was released from prison after serving just half her 17-year sentence for manslaughter - sparking outrage from family members, including her own mother, Vera, who slammed the sentence as “not nearly long enough”. The five youngest children died at their semi-detached council house after the Philpotts and pal Paul Mosley plotted to pour petrol through the letter box and start the blaze. Teenager Duwayne died several days later in a Birmingham hospital....
If you look at different parts of the Washington Football Team on different weeks, you’ll eventually convince yourself this is a playoff team given the plate of soggy nachos that is the NFC East. With the last three losses by the Burgundy & Gold coming by a combined seven points, one might think they’re just a touchdown away from a 5-4 start and lead in the division. That’s what makes each of the last three losses all the more tough to swallow. A play here or there was needed to be made, and it wasn’t. An ill-timed reverse loses yards before a sack that puts the offense out of field goal range. A missed field goal and a fumble took even more points off of the board in what would turn into a three-point loss. And with overtime imminent and an unfortunate roughing, the passer penalty moves the Detroit Lions into field goal range as Washington Football falls 30-27. From a pass rush that’s looked dominant at times to an offense that occasionally resembles something from the 21st century, there...
Catherine Engelbrecht, founder of True the Vote, said patriots are needed as volunteers at voting polls to observe the election process and report irregularities, making her call on Wednesday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow. “Volunteers are needed to work in ballot review processes and as poll watchers,” said Engelbrecht. “We need to get as many citizens as we can … everywhere, to serve in this election. Go vote early, in person, and then call your local party or candidate and ask how you can participate on their ballot security team.” “We need honest eyes and ears in these processes,” Engelbrecht stated. “It cannot be overstated the importance of bearing witness to this process, being a part of it. In states like Pennsylvania where we’re looking at likely recount scenarios, we need to have as many trained, honest people in that process as we possibly can.” LISTEN: Democrats’ ongoing changing of voting laws — ostensibly public health measures to reduce crowding while voting to reduce coronavirus transmission — is part of a broader strategy to generate confusion for the...

That left the Spaniard in a three-way share of the lead with Australian Cameron Davis (63) and American J.T.
