Rhode Island families seeking financial relief need to make sure their taxes are filed and their dependents claimed by the end of the day Wednesday to qualify for the state's child tax rebate program. Gov. Dan McKee announced on Aug. 2 that families may receive $250 per child for a maximum of three children, thereby receiving a maximum of $750. The tax rebates come from the governor's fiscal year 2023 budget signed in June, the Washington Examiner reported. STIMULUS UPDATE 2022: DEADLINE FOR $750 ONE-TIME PAYMENTS FOR RHODE ISLAND FAMILIES TOMORROW "Rebate checks will be automatically issued to all eligible tax filers beginning in October 2022," a press release from McKee's office said. The Department of Justice released a photo on Tuesday of documents seized in the raid of former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort earlier this month that bear "classified" logos. The department included the photograph as an attachment to its response to Trump's petition for a special master to review materials seized by federal officials in the raid. The DOJ said the image was a "redacted FBI photograph of certain documents and classified cover sheets recovered from a container in the '45 office.'" Trump declared that he declassified all documents at Mar-a-Lago just before he left office — however, prosecutors said Tuesday that Trump did not state that the 15 boxes of documents they acquired from the former administration earlier this year had been declassified or that the documents were protected under executive privilege when the administration released those boxes. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FILES LENGTHY REBUTTAL TO TRUMP SPECIAL MASTER REQUEST (FBI photos, courtesy of the Justice Department) Trump lawyer Christina Bobb also signed a document asserting that all classified material had been returned to the...
The ICU nurse who killed six people in a horrific fiery crash in LA earlier this month when she blew through a red light at 90mph suffered a 'frightening' mental collapse in the days leading up to the incident, it has been revealed. The revelation concerning the murder charges currently leveled at Nicole Linton, 37, came in the form of a filing from the LA nurse's defense attorneys, who insist their client suffered an 'apparent lapse of consciousness' at the time of the crash. Obtained by The LA Times, the filing offers a detailed narrative of the suspect's diminishing mental state in the buildup to the incident, which claimed the lives of a pregnant mother, her unborn child and one-year-old son, and four others. Linton, who is from Texas, is currently in custody on the six murder charges, which pertain to the five people as well as the unborn child. She is being held without bail, due to prosecutors belief that she is a flight risk and a danger to the community. The filing argues that Linton has 'no recollection of the events that...

The company funding Donald Trump's social media app Truth Social warned that the company could suffer if the former president's approval wanes. Digital World Acquisition Corp, the blank-check company that agreed to merge with Trump Media and Technology Group, said in a filing Monday that it believes that a shift in Trump's approval ratings could hurt the company's profitability. Trump's popularity is being tested anew following the FBI investigation of his Mar-a-Lago residence. "While TMTG believes there is sufficient demand for a true free speech platform, the image, reputation, popularity, and talent of its Chairman, President Trump, will be important factors to its success," the filing states. It then pointed to a Hill poll from March 2021 alleging that only 30% would want to use a social media app connected to Trump, as well as an October 2021 New York Post poll noting that over 60% of Republicans would use such a platform. At first blush, Missouri’s revenue report that charts a 3% decline in overall state general revenue collections in August compared to July should set off alarm bells. According to the August 2021 General Revenue Report from Missouri State Budget Director Dan Haug, net general revenue collections for this August was $962.2 million compared to $991.6 million collected by the state in August 2020 . That $30 million dip in revenue follows a similar decrease in July compared to last year. In fact, since Fiscal Year 2022 began July 1, Missouri’s net general revenue collections of $1.66 billion are 22.5% below the $2.15 billion collected by the state this time last year. But there’s an important quantifier to the numbers, as the state’s Office of Administration notes in the news release accompanying the report. “Due to the COVID pandemic, the 2020 income tax filing deadlines in April and June were moved to July 15, 2020,” the release states. “Therefore, the comparison of FY21 to FY22 will be negatively impacted throughout FY22.” Last year’s pandemic-skewered income tax deadline extensions shifted some FY20...

On Aug. 12, Britney Spears' father, Jamie Spears, agreed that he would step down as conservator of her estate -- not immediately, but "when the time is right." In court docs, his lawyer cited public pressure as a reason for his decision, admitting that continuing to be Britney's conservator wouldn't be in "her best interests." Still, Jamie and his team made it clear they believe the public outcry for his removal is "unjustified." Jamie ended the filing with a self-congratulatory pat on the back, saying Britney was in dire need of help when he took over her life...

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A 23-year-old Illinois man has been charged with fraud for filing a false claim on a vacant house in Cedar Rapids after a major storm caused widespread damage in the area in August. Federal prosecutors say Tavonte Donnell Stewart of Chicago improperly received $5,927 in aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after the August derecho, including more than $2,200 in rental assistance. He was charged last week. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Stewart was one of 16 people who applied for assistance related to the same property. When officials contacted the firm that owns the home, the property manager said it was vacant at the time of the storm and only sustained minor roof damage. Investigators said Stewart also applied this fall for FEMA benefits on a property in Felton, California although that claim was denied. Copyright 2020 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Gov. Ron DeSantis extended Florida’s eviction and foreclosure moratorium until Oct. 1 last month, delaying what some fear will be a wave of foreclosures across the state once the ban is lifted. Those fears are justified if trends documented by mortgage date firm ATTOM Data Solutions in its August 2020 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report continue into fall and 2021. According to ATTOM, which owns RealtyTrac, Florida had the nation’s second-highest foreclosure filing rate in August, with Jacksonville’s foreclosure filing rate the highest for any metro area in the country. There were 9,889 U.S. properties with foreclosure filings – default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions – in August, up 11 percent from July but down 81 percent from August 2019, ATTOM reported, noting that equates to one in every 13,791 housing units nationwide. While foreclosure activity remains at historically low levels, “there was a significant increase in foreclosure starts in August compared to July," RealtyTrac Executive Vice President Rick Sharga said. "Several states – including Florida and New York – that have had foreclosure moratoria in...
On Monday morning, August 3, the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance filed court papers that — according to the New York Times — indicate that it might be investigating President Donald Trump for possible fraud. Reporter Jerry Lambe examines that court filing in an article for Law & Crime, discussing the Manhattan DA’s pursuit of Trump’s financial documents and the possible scope of its investigation. “According to several legal experts,” Lambe explains, “the revelation that the contours of the investigation will include bank and insurance fraud likely spelled ‘bad news’ for Trump and his family business.” The court filing indicates that Vance’s investigation and his office’s pursuit of Trump’s financial records go way beyond hush money payments to women that Trump, according to his former personal attorney Michael Cohen, had extramarital affairs with: adult film star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal. Lambe observes, “While prosecutors did not outright confirm the exact parameters of their probe, the filing stated that any argument grounded in the notion that the investigation is limited to hush money payments is baseless....
