The Spartans opened up conference play with a convincing 33-16 win over Wyoming on the road. San Jose State moves to 3-1 overall, their sole loss coming against Auburn in their second game of the year. Strong chemistry between junior quarterback Chevon Cordeiro and his receivers fueled the lead in the first half. The Spartans’ strong defensive front extinguished any flicker of a Cowboys comeback in the second half. Cordeiro had no trouble finding his receivers in wide open space and often exploited favorable man coverage match-ups against the Cowboys’ secondary. But they had initial trouble converting in the red zone. In a first quarter drive, Cordeiro found Elijah Cooks for a 23-yard pass on third-and-21. A Wyoming hands-to-face penalty cut the distance to goal in half. But the Spartans couldn’t find the end zone, and their 26-yard field goal attempt missed wide left. A few minutes later, the Spartans stopped Wyoming on a fourth-and-one play, a defensive stop made easier because the Cowboys started the play in shotgun formation. Cordeiro found a wide-open Cooks in the middle of the...
The slamming of doors and clomping of feet at the crack of dawn isn’t the ideal alarm clock for most people. San Jose State wide receivers Justin Lockhart and Elijah Cooks don’t fall into this category. At least when it is their quarterback, Chevan Cordeiro, jarring them awake. “Chevan is the workhorse. We hear Chevan do stuff in the morning from our beds and we know it’s like, ‘Ok it’s about that time to get up,’” said Cooks. Lockhart added, “We tell Chevan to be as loud as possible.” The trio plans to make plenty of noise together on the field for the Spartans this fall, too. Three college teammates living together isn’t unique, but for this trio, there’s a twist: All three are first-year transfers; Cooks and Lockhart from the University of Nevada and Cordeiro from the University of Hawaii. The in-person wake-up call is just one example of how the trio has come together since arriving in the South Bay over the winter. It didn’t take long for the trio to bond as roommates or teammates. "YOUTH is wasted on the young," as the saying goes – and one 48-year-old has shared how she stays young at heart and in life. Rose Cordeiro is a fitness fanatic who loves to dance and show off her toned physique in bold outfit choices – and when she gets nasty trolls telling her to act her age, she pays them no mind. 4Rose Cardeiro is a fashion and fitness fanaticCredit: TikTok / crzy_fitmama4 4She gave critics the hand while showing off her enviable physiqueCredit: TikTok / crzy_fitmama4 She took to TikTok to show off her moves as well as her style — in spite of haters who constantly criticize her carefree ways. "Me minding my own business and just having fun at 48 bc (sic) I'm not dead yet," she wrote in a video of her dancing in denim daisy dukes and a neon plunging crop top. Her video was a response to a critic of her content. "Grandma can you please go spend your time with your grandkids instead of doing what 20-year-old girls do," the hater wrote....
SAN JOSE — Flirting with an upset to an FCS school was not the showing San Jose State was hoping for in Thursday night’s season opener. Especially one in which head coach Brent Brennan concedes the Spartans got outplayed for much of their 21-17 comeback win over Portland State. It’s certainly not where the Spartans want to be as they head into the heart of SEC country to play at Auburn next weekend. “Our football team has a lot to work on,” Brennan said shortly after quarterback Chevan Cordeiro capped his SJSU debut by scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard run with 1:11 remaining. “But the amazing thing to me is that this team found a way to finish the game and get the win. … I’m glad our team stuck together and found a way to do it.” SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA – SEPTEMBER 1: San Jose State Spartans quarterback Chevan Cordeiro (2) scores the wining touchdown against the Portland State Vikings in the fourth quarter of their season opener at San Jose State Spartan Stadium in San Jose,...
SAN JOSE — It truly was a game that San Jose State did not deserve to win. But thanks to their defense forcing three turnovers and a late rushing touchdown from transfer quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, the Spartans escaped Thursday with a 21-17 win over FCS Portland State. In front of 16, 291 fans at CEFCU Stadium, it looked like San Jose State was going to suffer its first loss to an FCS program since 2018. Two drives that started inside Viking territory stalled late in the fourth quarter and a third looked like it could, too. But in his first start since transferring in from Hawaii, Cordeiro took a third down play from the 2-yard line to his left, then scrambled back to the right and through contact to plow his way into the endzone for his second rushing touchdown of the game. It capped off a physically brutal night for Cordeiro, who was battered all night long behind an inexperienced Spartan offensive line. San Jose State started three underclassmen on the offensive line — two sophomores and a freshman...
SAN JOSE — It’s easy to argue that no opponent knows the San Jose State defense in Brent Brennan’s five years in charge better than former Hawaii quarterback Chevan Cordeiro. The Honolulu-born junior played in 35 games over the last four years for the Rainbow Warriors and faced the Spartans three times. But after throwing five touchdowns in a 42-40 win in 2019, San Jose State won the next two matchups against Cordeiro, 35-24 in 2020 and 17-13 in 2021. Now, after transferring to San Jose State in the winter, Cordeiro faced that defense every day of training camp. And that defense is showing him why he knows he made the right choice in leaving home to play for the Spartans. “They’re a bunch of dogs,” Cordeiro said. ”It was hard to play against them, because they have talent and they have good coaching. So I’m glad to be on their side.” Cordeiro is the second former opponent to transfer in and take the helm of the Spartan offense in recent seasons, following in Nick Starkel’s shoes. The former Arkansas quarterback...
The man tasked with guiding the San Jose State football team back to its 2020 heights will be a familiar face to Spartans supporters. After four years at Hawaii, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro transferred within the Mountain West to SJSU and will enter the season as the presumed starter. For Cordeiro, a fifth-year junior with an additional year of eligibility, San Jose already feels like home. “The players here really took me in with open arms and they’re like family,” Cordeiro said. “It felt like my second home. Everyone is one big family, and when I played under (former Hawaii) coach Nick Rolovich (in 2018-19), that’s how it felt too.” Cordeiro is set to succeed Nick Starkel, who led the Spartans to an undefeated regular season in 2020 and was a steady presence under center for two years. Nick Nash, now a senior, started last season when Starkel missed time with an arm injury, but the job this year is Cordeiro’s to lose. The newcomer from Hawaii may not have the effortless arm talent Starkel displayed, but his athleticism and quickness...
MIKE TYSON gave his trainer a swollen lip as the boxing legend appears to still be training. Cindy Parlow Cone was re-elected to a four-year team as U.S. Soccer Federation president on Saturday, beating predecessor Carlos Cordeiro in an endorsement of the governing body’s settlement of a lawsuit by women players. Cone, a former national team player, received 52.3% of the weighted vote on the first ballot during the USSF National Council meeting, held on-line and in Atlanta. Cordeiro, a former Goldman Sachs partner and current adviser to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, got 46.6% of the ballots as he tried to regain the job he held from 2018 until 2020, when he quit amid the fallout from legal filings that claimed women’s national team players had less physical ability and responsibility than male counterparts. Cone was vice president at the time and moved up to president, then was elected last winter to a one-year term. Women’s team players and the USSF announced a deal Feb. 22 that will have players split $22 million. The USSF also agreed to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at...
NEW YORK (AP) — While the U.S. men’s national team is fighting to get back to the World Cup, a behind-the-scenes scuffle is taking place for American soccer’s leadership. Carlos Cordeiro is trying to oust Cindy Parlow Cone, who took over as U.S. Soccer Federation president in March 2020 when Cordeiro quit amid the fallout from legal filings that claimed women’s national team players had less physical ability and responsibility than male counterparts. The USSF National Council meets on March 5 to vote on a four-year term. “Members from across the federation have been coming to me with concerns about the direction of U.S. Soccer and asked me to run, I think in a nutshell, feeling ignored, neglected, marginalized,” Cordeiro said during an interview with The Associated Press. The filings said the women were “ignoring the materially higher level of speed and strength required to perform the job of an MNT player.” Cordeiro said he did not read them in advance. “When I took over, there was a toxic environment to U.S. Soccer,” Cone said during a separate interview...
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Soccer Foundation has urged its members to reelect Cindy Parlow Cone as U.S. Soccer Federation president rather than restore former president Carlos Cordeiro. Cordeiro, a former Goldman Sachs partner who headed the federation from 2018-20, resigned in March 2020 after federation lawyers filed legal papers claiming women’s national team players had less physical ability and responsibility than their male counterparts. Parlow Cone, a former national team player, was vice president at the time and succeeded him. The USSF national council meets in Atlanta on March 5 to vote on a four-year term. “In our 28 years, our board has never taken a position in a U.S. Soccer election,” the foundation said in a statement Thursday. “But the stakes are too high this time to remain silent. Based on our experience with both candidates, our 25-person board of directors unanimously endorse Cindy Cone.” The foundation was established with the proceeds of the 1994 World Cup. The election winner likely will have influence on the operation of the 2026 World Cup, to be played in the...
Carlos Cordeiro is running to regain his job as U.S. Soccer Federation president, two years after he quit amid a backlash to the group’s lawyers filing legal papers claiming the women’s national team players had less physical ability and responsibility than their male counterparts. Cordeiro was immediately criticized by women’s national team star midfielder Megan Rapinoe, who accused him in a tweet of allowing "caveman levels of misogyny." CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Cordeiro, a former Goldman Sachs partner, headed the federation from 2018-2020. He resigned in March 2020, three days after the federation’s filing prompted widespread criticism from players, MLS Commissioner Don Garber and sponsors that included The Coca-Cola Co., Anheuser Busch Cos. Inc., The Procter & Gamble Co. and Volkswagen Group. The federation said in the filing that the women's team players who sued the organization in a pay dispute "ask the court to conclude that the ability required of an WNT player is equal to the ability required of an MNT player, as a relative matter, by ignoring the materially higher level of speed...
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Chevan Cordeiro threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Hawaii became bowl-eligible with a 38-14 victory over Wyoming on Saturday. Cordeiro completed 19 of 31 passes for 323 yards with one interception. He was the game’s leading rusher with 86 yards on 14 carries. Calvin Turner Jr. caught five passes for 90 yards and Steven Fiso had two TD receptions for the Warriors (6-7, 3-5 Mountain West). Cordeiro threw all three of his TD passes in the first half. Hawaii scored the game’s first 24 points, then Cordeiro hit Jared Smart for a 50-yard touchdown and a 31-7 halftime lead. Wyoming (6-6, 2-6) scored on a 4-yard run by Titus Swen in the second quarter and a 30-yard pass from Levi Williams to Isaiah Neyor in the third. HONOLULU (AP) — Chevan Cordeiro passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, Dedrick Parson scored on runs of 10 and 37 yards in the fourth quarter and Hawaii held on to beat Colorado State 50-45 on Saturday night and snap a three-game skid. Cordeiro completed 23 of 41 passes for 406 yards and Parson finished with 11 carries for 78 yards Hawaii (5-7, 2-5 Mountain West Conference). Cordeiro scored on a 15-yard run to give Hawaii (4-7, 1-5) the lead for good early in the second quarter. About six minutes later, he was flushed from the pocket and, as he rolled to his left, lofted a pass from the end zone to Zion Bowens at the 30 who raced untouched down the left sideline for a 93-yard touchdown — the second-longest pass play in program history — and after Cameron Lockridge returned an interception 40 yards for a TD just before halftime, Cordeiro hit Nick Mardner at the goal line for a 42-yard score to make it 36-10 with 9:35 left in the third quarter. An ex-con who once left his cellphone behind after a home invasion in Woodbridge is headed to federal prison in connection with a shooting earlier this year in Elizabeth. Kevin Cordeiro, 34, of Elizabeth, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Newark to being a convicted felon in possession of ammunition. Cordeiro was one of several men in masks who stormed a Woodridge home in 2008, beating a resident and his girlfriend, before fleeing empty-handed, authorities said at the time. One of the victims recognized Cordiero after partially removing his mask, according to investigators. Cordiero also left his cellphone behind, they said. Cordiero ended up spending nearly five years in state prison before being paroled, records show. He'll have to serve out whatever federal sentence he receives on March 9, 2022. Authorities said Cordiero fired multiple shots at an occupied vehicle parked on Westfield Avenue in Elizabeth on Feb. 27. No serious injuries were reported, said police who recovered eight .45-caliber shell casings from the shooting scene. Cordeiro fled Florida and was arrested there by the U.S. Marshals...
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Chevan Cordeiro threw for a first-half touchdown and ran for a second-half score as Hawaii snapped a two-game losing streak with a 41-21 win over New Mexico State on Saturday night. The Aggies took a 3-0 lead on Ethan Albertson’s 33-yard, first-quarter field goal, but Hawaii answered on its next play from scrimmage when Cordeiro hit Nick Mardner with a 74-yard touchdown pass to start a run of 17 unanswered points. New Mexico State (1-4) got a second-quarter touchdown pass from Jonah Johnson to Robert Downs III from six-yards out and Albertson converted a 20-yard field goal to make it 17-13 at intermission. Cordeiro nosed in from a yard out in the third quarter and Calvin Turner Jr. added a 14-yard run for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter as the Rainbow Warriors (2-3) pulled away. CHICAGO (AP) — Cindy Parlow Cone will seek a full four-year term as U.S. Soccer Federation president in February 2022. The former national team midfielder became president March 11, 2020, when Carlos Cordeiro quit following a backlash over the federation’s role in a gender discrimination lawsuit filed by women’s national team players. Parlow Cone had been elected vice president in February 2019 and moved up when Cordeiro quit. She ran unopposed last winter for the final year of Cordeiro’s term. Parlow Cone helped settle the lawsuit over inequitable working conditions while leaving the dispute over unequal pay for additional litigation. She also presided over the hiring of Will Wilson as chief executive officer. A four-year term would run until months before the U.S. co-hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. “I feel like there is a lot left to do. I’ve spent my entire presidency in COVID, which everyone knows the challenges that presents,” the 43-year-old Parlow Cone said Saturday during a conference call following the USSF’s board of directors meeting. “I think we have helped lead the...
