In just a matter of weeks, both Serena Williams and Roger Federer have announced their retirements from tennis.  Williams left the door open after a surprising U.S. Open run, but Federer has seemingly closed the door shut in a social media post. Federer was the first of three men to dominate this era of tennis — namely just one alongside Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. All three are fierce rivals on the court, but seemingly get along off of it. At 41 years old, the 20-time grand slam singles champion revealed he’ll be calling it quits after the Laver Cup next week in London due to significant injury challenges. Federer had tried to come back for the U.S. Open, but failed to do so in part due to his injury rehab. “Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career,” Federer said. “The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future,...
The Colorado Avalanche outlasted the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night, grasping the Stanley Cup Trophy to the delight of Twitter. The thrilling Stanley Cup Final series between the Avalanche and the Lightning ended on Sunday night with a Game 6 victory for Colorado. The Avs fell behind 1-0 in the first period but fought back to take the lead in the second. They saw out the victory through a frantic third period to win 2-1. Even as the final minutes of the game played out, people on Twitter were split between analysis mode and heart attack mode. #Avs are playing like #tblightning usually do in close-out game, just shutting Cup champs down (two shots in third period) — Joe Smith (@JoeSmithTB) June 27, 2022 The #Avs seem to be getting stronger as the period goes. The USMNT needed simply to not lose by six goals to Costa Rica to qualify for the World Cup. So fans were oddly celebrating the 2-0 loss on Wednesday. It was a simple formula for the United States Men’s National Team in terms of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying as they entered Wednesday night’s away fixture against Costa Rica and the last of qualifying. If the Americans could avoid a 6-0 defeat on the heels of their thumping of Panama the previous weekend, the USMNT would move on to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The match against Costa Rica was anything but the US’s best effort. They were sloppy defensively, the attacks couldn’t find their marks and things just looked a bit disjointed. As the final whistle blew, however, the United States took just a 2-0 loss. And with that, the USMNT officially punched their ticket to the World Cup after missing out in 2018.USMNT qualifies for World Cup: Fans celebrateEven if it looks like a 2-0 loss on Wednesday, the overall result is a massive win for the Americans...
The best Andy Dwyer moments from Parks and Rec 10 Things That Can Ding Your Social Security Payments All the ingredients are there for another instant classic between the USA and Mexico in a World Cup qualifying showdown between the two powers in the CONCACAF region. Mexico is in first place in its group and the USA can catch El Tri in the standings with a win Friday night at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. Mexico might be the road team and it might be sporting a three-point cushion, but there's serious pressure on head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino. That's because Mexico lost two finals to the USA during the summer: the inaugural Nations League final and the CONCACAF Gold Cup title match. It would be traumatic for Mexico supporters to drop three straight competitive matches. The difference in those previous matches was set pieces, which the Americans dominated. They could prove decisive once again as Mexico deals with key absences on the back line.  The USMNT, which failed to qualify for the last World Cup, will not want to drop...

But they may not have such a willing participant in visiting Peru. While Argentina is sitting pretty in second place in the South American World Cup qualifying standings, which would give it a direct ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Peru (eighth place, 11 points) is scraping just to stay alive for the playoff spot that's granted to fifth place. Coached by Argentine Ricardo Gareca, Peru will be looking to make life tough on Argentina and try to come away with at least a draw, especially given the absence of several of their most influential players.
