FRANKLIN, Tennessee – U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) told The Tennessee Star on Saturday at the Williamson County Republican Party Reagan Dinner that “the GOP, the ‘Great Opportunity Party’ has a very bright future.” The Star was able to sit down with Senator Scott and conduct a one-on-one interview, arranged through Senator Scott’s staff and Williamson GOP Chair Cheryl Brown. Senator Scott talked about what he sees in the future of the GOP, which he refers to as the “Great Opportunity Party.” “I think the GOP, the ‘Great Opportunity Party,’ has a very bright future. The truth is carpe diem: this is the time to seize it. You look at the polling numbers of the president and the Democrats. It really is an opportunity for us – whether it is the African American community, the Hispanic community, the majority community – what we see consistently is the poll numbers are down. The question is why,” he said. “The policies have failed to the left and we have an opportunity to show what we can do,” continued Scott. “I think we’ve...

Republican voters are feeling a tad deflated about the state of their party, according to new polling out from the AP-NORC.  The survey showed that less than half of Republicans said they were optimistic about the state of the GOP—just 41%, with only 13% saying they're "very" optimistic. One-third came right out and said they were pessimistic.  The problem for the party really seems to come down to one person: Donald Trump. While he continues to be popular with most GOP voters, he also has a depressive effect on the party more broadly. According to the survey, 76% of Republicans still view him favorably. But when it comes to his level of involvement in the party, Republicans are torn: 47% want Trump to have "a lot" of influence over the direction the party, 34% say a little, and 18% say they don't want Trump to have any influence at all. That 18% sliver of GOP voters who'd like to rid the entire party of Trump has remained notably consistent since the beginning of the year. In February, a Politico/Morning Consult poll found...

A high-ranking government whistleblower who alleges the Trump administration fumbled its coronavirus response resigned on Tuesday, saying he has been forced out. Lawyers for Dr. Rick Bright said he was sidelined at the National Institutes of Health, where he had been transferred this spring after being ousted as head of a biodefense agency. In a May complaint, Bright had argued that the nation desperately needed a comprehensive national testing strategy, and said in an addendum on Tuesday that 'without this strategy in place today, the country is truly 'flying blind' into a very challenging winter for public health.' Attorneys Debra Katz and Lisa Banks said Bright's NIH superiors ignored a national coronavirus testing strategy that Bright developed because he had become politically toxic within the Trump administration.
