Nets head coach Steve Nash says All-Star forward Ben Simmons doesn’t need to shoot jump shots to be effective on the court. “I’m not one of those people who thinks Ben has to shoot the ball,” he said. “I don’t. He’s a special, special player without taking any jump shots. There’s other solutions for that. There’s so many things he brings to the table and our group. [Shooting] is not what he brings to the table for us.” Nash said Simmons looks good through three days of training camp and that “he’s on his way back to his best.” He said shooting is the last thing a team with two Hall of Fame scorers and a newfound abundance of spacing needs from Simmons. “To me, Ben is an incredible playmaker, he plays point guard, he’s incredible in transition, he’s a good screener, he’s playing out of the half roll and attacking the rim,” Nash said. “Those are the things we need from him” BIRTHDAY BOY For Kevin Durant’s 34th birthday, the Nets welcomed him with a cake — and a...
Minnesota Aurora’s wildly successful first season in the fledgling USL W League came and went as fast as a Minnesota spring. After falling just short of an unbeaten record and the league title, the club’s co-founders barely had time to catch their breath before fielding questions about what’s next, including the inevitable: How long before Aurora jumps to the professional National Women’s Soccer League? “I get the NWSL question every game, from fans and parents and all of the above,” said Allie Reinke, the former University of Minnesota standout and one of Aurora’s nine co-founders. In one sense, it’s a preposterous notion. One outstanding season in a third-tier amateur league with college and postgrad players means you’re ready for the pros? That’s like demanding your favorite Northwoods League club replace the Twins in the American League Central (keep the remarks about the Twins’ pitching to yourselves). Article continues after advertisement But one thing about Aurora is hard to ignore – its stunning fan support at the 6,200-capacity TCO Stadium in Eagan; the Vikings’ training site. Aurora topped the USL W...
Getty Jimmy Garoppolo throws the ball versus the Falcons on December 19, 2021. The San Francisco 49ers are officially less than five days away from reporting to 2022 training camp, and many fans and media members continue to wonder how much longer Jimmy Garoppolo will be in the Bay Area. To recap, Garoppolo’s name has been linked to the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns as potential trade destinations during the month of July. However, longtime Texans beat reporter and NFL insider John McClain said on the July 15 edition of KNBR’s Murph and Mac Show that Garoppolo isn’t coming to Houston, claiming “they have no interest.” Meanwhile, 49ers insider for The Athletic David Lombardi began to shoot down Jimmy G to Cleveland on Tuesday, July 19. But now, one longtime NFL executive told Heavy’s NFL senior reporter Matt Lombardo that he won’t be surprised if someone from the NFC South decides to “jump in” on the chance to get the veteran quarterback. LOUDON, N.H. (AP) — Tyler Reddick can add Michael Jordan to his contacts list. Reddick made the surprise jump — his current Richard Childress Racing team bellyached it’s an ill-timed one — to join Denny Hamlin and Jordan’s 22XI Racing in 2024. Well, that’s one driver off the free-agent market. Kyle Busch still wants a new deal for 2023, and yes, the long-time Joe Gibbs Racing driver has shopped himself to other teams. Kurt Busch and Bubba Wallace both want to stay with 23XI for as long as the team will let them drive — even with no concrete plan to add a third car. Hey, and don’t forget Aric Almirola. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver had announced this season in the No. 10 Ford would be his last before he called it a career, saying he wanted more time with his family. Almirola, the defending New Hampshire Motor Speedway race winner, has recently hedged on his decision and said he’d be open to driving a few races next season, especially if sponsor Smithfield was on board. Boston Red Sox. (Photo by Maddie Malhotra/Boston Red Sox/Getty Images) Juan Soto has rejected a monster offer from the Nationals and the club will now explore trade options. Which teams need to rush to make an offer and play? It seemed as if negotiatons between Juan Soto and the Washington Nationals were trending in a positive direction, particularly with the franchise sending the superstar outfielder a monster, godfather contract offer recently for a deal worth $440MM. But things have now taken a dramatic turn that could result in Soto being traded. On Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) was first to report that Soto and his team rejected the Nats’ massive offer. More importantly, though, Washington is now going to “entertain” trade offers for the 23-year-old slugger in the wake of the contract being rejected. This is massive news and an about-face regarding the way things were seemingly headed. And as such, it’s time to take a look at five teams that should now be looking to make a trade offer to the Nationals to try and land...
Getty Miami Heat stars Kyle Lowry and Duncan Robinson look on during a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Although the Miami Heat‘s 2021-22 season ended a few weeks earlier than they had hoped, there’s no doubting that the team remains a force to be reckoned with. If not for injuries to Tyler Herro and Kyle Lowry, there’s no telling what might have happened in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals and beyond Nevertheless, the odds that team president Pat Riley pats himself on the back for a job almost done and decides to run it back next season land somewhere between slim and none. Unfortunately, Miami’s road to actually landing another difference-maker to play alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo is somewhat murky due to the team’s roster construction and cap concerns. As it stands, free agency is essentially off the table; Riley would have to circumvent some potholes and pull off a trade. However, one league executive believes that the club could clear enough space to make a run at a backcourt superstar by helping the...
Getty Dan Campbell on the field during the Lions game against Minnesota. Coming into the 2022 season, there is a lot of newfound optimism about the Detroit Lions from plenty in the media, but Dan Orlovsky has always been realistic given his ties to the team. Having played quarterback in Detroit, the NFL analyst has a unique perspective on the Lions and where they are going or may have to go in the future. Orlovsky has never been afraid to pull punches when he feels as if the team has made a mistake, which is why it might be more notable when he believes the team is heading in the right direction. DENVER, CO –  The Denver Broncos used their 2 fourth round picks on the defensive side of the ball selecting Safety Demarri Mathis of Pittsburgh and defensive lineman Eyomi Uwazurike of Iowa State. Mathis was honorable mention All-ACC after sitting out 2020 with a injury. His 43.5 inch vertical jump at his pro day was better than any vertical jump at the NFL combine. Uwazurike is a big defensive lineman at 6-6 and 319 pounds. He was first-team All Big-12 and 2nd team Academic All Big-12.
Getty Guard Kalob Ledoux, then of the McNeese State Cowboys, handles the ball during a 2016 bout with the Purdue Boilermakers. While the Golden State Warriors are on a path that, they hope, ends with the Larry O’Brien Trophy being hoisted, players for the team’s G League affiliate are already looking for their next jobs. That includes guard Kalob Ledoux, who has designs on balling out in the Association next season. Per BasketballNews.com’s Matt Babcock, Ledoux will be draft-eligible when teams assemble to make their selections on June 23. His report on the 24-year-old’s eligibility was also retweeted by Ledoux’s agent, BJ Bass, which would seem to indicate he’s declaring for the draft itself. To that end, the former Louisiana Tech sharpshooter is already working to get his name out there. Ledoux is one of 24 prospects slated to descend upon Florida’s Gulf Coast later this month to participate in the second annual Tampa Bay Pro Combine, as revealed by BasketballNews earlier this week.Ledoux Had a Standout Campaign with the Sea Dubs Play Kalob Ledoux Drops Career-High...
After a season that ended on a down note, Ravens ticket prices are going up in 2022. In a letter sent to season-ticket holders, the team announced that it is raising ticket prices for the second time in three years. The average ticket price increase is 9%, according to the Ravens, with the rate bump depending on the section. Parking costs will not increase in 2022, and the Ravens said they’re “committed” to keeping ticket prices the same in 2023, when the team will again have a ninth home game. “As we set our sights on the future — and strive to continue producing league-leading results in everything we do — it’s vital that we remain competitive with other NFL teams,” senior vice president of ticket sales and operations Baker Koppelman wrote in the letter, which was reviewed by The Baltimore Sun. “Revenue generated through your valued investment allows us to sign and retain players who will help the Ravens contend at the highest level, and it provides the kind of stadium experience you deserve and...
China's American-born figure skater Zhu Yi was blasted on Chinese social media after she fell twice during her Olympic debut at Beijing's Capital Indoor Stadium on Sunday. 'Zhu Yi has fallen' was trending on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with some users slamming her for alleged false patriotism. 'Please let her learn Chinese first, before she talks about patriotism,' one Weibo user wrote.  'This is such a disgrace,' another commented, gaining 11,000 likes from other users. Zhu, 19, finished with the lowest score on day two of the women's short program team event after she failed a jump and fell on the opening combination, and missed another jump later in the program. Additionally, Weibo users are questioning why the California-born athlete was picked to represent China instead of a figure skater who was born in the country. Zhu, born Beverly Zu in 2002, decided in 2018 to compete for China in the Olympics. She changed her name and gave up her American citizenship, however she is still facing criticisms for not being fluent in Chinese.     China's American-born figure skater Zhu Yi...

In one of the least surprising storylines of the NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are still really bad. And while the team is struggling on the field, their mascot struggled above it. Sunday afternoon, during the Jaguars’ 21-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, team mascot Jaxson de Ville attempted to spark the crowd by bungee jumping over the stadium. The mascot opened the stunt with an impressive backflip off one of the stadium light stands, but instead of swinging over the crowd on his way down to the field, de Ville got stuck, and briefly dangled helplessly. It’s a stunt de Ville has completed successfully in the past, but Sunday afternoon the mascot needed to be safely lowered into the upper deck of the stadium after taking the initial plunge off the light stand. @JaxsonDeVille @Jaguars What an entrance ???????? pic.twitter.com/5FwA0Qiaq8 — Jackson(ville)???? Photos of RuPaul Through the Years 20 Ways To Pay Less at Costco The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl odds shifted significantly after the team’s Week 1 win over the Buffalo Bills. The Steelers were +5000 to win the Super Bowl ahead of the season at BetMGM. Pittsburgh is now +3500 to win the title after beating the Bills 23-16 on the road. Pittsburgh won the game on the heels of a strong defensive performance and a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown. The offense didn’t inspire much confidence. It reasons that the Steelers’ odds would have shifted more had it been a more dominating win with some contributions from the offense. That move from +5000 to +3500 was still good for the biggest Super Bowl odds shift of any team in the NFL after the first weekend of the season. The Cardinals went from +3500 to +3000 after their massive win over the Tennessee Titans and the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw their odds shift from +700 to +600. The Bucs are still the...
Zooey Deschanels super-glam date night, plus more stars at the 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards Watch Tuesday morning’s CPI reading for signs that the recent inflation surge is abating Early in a season, we do our best not to overreact. We realize the season is long and what we just saw this past weekend is only a single data point for what will eventually paint a much bigger picture. With that being said, one NFL quarterback impressed so much that he's now the second-favorite in the MVP race.  Kyler Murray threw four touchdowns and added another with his legs in the Arizona Cardinals 38-13 win over the Tennessee Titans. Entering the weekend, Murray was +2500 (25-to-1) to win NFL MVP. Now? Murray sits at just +900 (9-1) at BetMGM. Only Patrick Mahomes at +550 has better odds.  Murray winning MVP is not outlandish  When preparing to join a hype-train, I like to take a second and think about how outlandish the idea really is. Kyler Murray winning NFL MVP falls very low on the "outlandish" scale. I don't think...
Highlights from the ballot … — Alabama and Georgia held down the top-two spots, in that order, but there was movement directly below. — Iowa was not included on my preseason ballot, but in an attempt to respond to results, I moved the Hawkeyes to No. 9 last week following an impressive opening victory over Indiana. They produced an even better win this weekend with a road victory at Iowa State (No. 6 my ballot/No. 9 AP poll). That stands as one of the best wins of the early season. Combine the two results, and Iowa is No. 3 on the ballot this week. Yep, from unranked to No. 3 in two weeks. It’s a huge move, but big ballot moves are the only way to eliminate preseason bias. Per the AP voting guidelines issued prior to the season: “Don’t hesitate to make significant changes in your ballot from week to week. There’s no rule against jumping a 16th-ranked team over the eighth-ranked team if No. 16 is coming off a big victory and No. 8 squeaked by an unranked...
Bob Odenkirk Returns to Better Call Saul After Collapsing on Set Dow loses grip on 35,000 and touches 2-week low as stock market comes under pressure Wednesday We always want to be step ahead so let's do that with Week 1 waiver wire recommendations The 2021 NFL fantasy football season is upon us. The next step is the grind of weekly decisions and finding potential help on the waiver wire. Unfortunately, fantasy football has a wide range of formats, league sizes, and free-agent processes, making it challenging to offer a one-stop, fix-all article. The first step in building a winning team is understanding the current structure of your roster. The football season is a sprint that is loaded with injuries and changing opportunities from week to week. It is also critical to understand that points win league, not the best names, and what happened the previous season won’t be repeatable this year. Here are a couple of thoughts before winding through the potential Week 1 pickups for anyone who drafted over the past two months: We never want to...

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres re-signed center Casey Mittelstadt to a three-year, $7.5 million contract on Thursday. Mittelstadt, a restricted free agent, was selected in the first round of the 2017 draft. The 22-year-old from Minnesota overcame early career inconsistencies to finish third on the Sabres with 10 goals and fourth with 22 points in just 41 games last season. That’s a jump from 2019-20 when his struggles led to Mittelstadt being demoted to the minors. Used sparingly to open last season, Mittelstadt saw his production jump when he gained additional playing time after coach Ralph Krueger was fired in mid-March and replaced by Don Granato, who has taken over on a full-time basis. Overall, Mittelstadt has 27 goals and 61 points in 155 career games. Mittelstadt is considered part of a young core the Sabres hope to build around following an offseason in which the team traded forward Sam Reinhart and with captain Jack Eichel’s status uncertain. The Sabres are attempting to trade Eichel due to a rift over how to treat a neck injury that has...

Mental health and high competition: can they coexist? 4:10 (CNN) – In a series of Instagram stories, Simone Biles shared videos, which have since been deleted, of her struggling with her dismounts on the uneven bars and answering questions about having the “twisties,” a mental block in gymnastics where competitors they lose track of their positioning in the air.
