For urban garden designers, hydroponics has become a very popular solution to the lack of soil and space available in cities. Hydroponics is a system of growing food in water without the use of soil, and it can be done utilizing vertical spacing. This can make it a great fit for apartment balconies and other confined areas. Otherwise, many curious and innovative growers have simply become interested in broadening the scope of what they do. In reality, there are several methods for using hydroponics, including wicking beds, floating platforms, flood-and-drain systems, drip systems, and other various titles that likely mean little to those who aren’t gardening hacks. Suffice it to say hydroponics is a well-established form of agriculture, something humans have been practicing since Ancient Egypt. However, we have new technology that has made things work a little differently. Serena Williams returned to Grand Slam tennis for the first time in a year on Tuesday at Wimbledon — but it wasn't just her shock first-round exit that got fans talking. The ace was seen sporting black 'stickers' on her face, which had many questioning if they were symbolic or a ploy to put her opponent off. It turns out the small strips on her right cheek were medical tape designed to keep her sinuses clear and help her breathe properly. The 40-year-old suffers from recurrent sinusitis which, as well as blocking the airways, can lead to headaches, pressure and pain in the face. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also thought to suffer from the condition and had surgery to clear his sinuses last week. Williams was also seen wearing the kinesiology tape, or K-tape, when she reached the doubles semi-finals at a tournament in Eastbourne earlier this month. The super-thin flexible material is normally used to aid muscle recovery and increase range of motion in joints, despite limited evidence it actually works. It has become a ubiquitous piece of kit...

Artificial intelligence has a racism problem. Look no further than the bots that go on racist rants, or the facial recognition tech that refuses to see Black people, or discriminatory HR bots that won’t hire people of color. It’s a pernicious issue plaguing the world of neural networks and machine learning that not only strengthens existing biases and racist thinking, but also worsens the effects of racist behavior towards communities of color everywhere. And when it’s coupled with the existing racism in the medical world, it can be a recipe for disaster. That’s what’s so concerning about a new study published in The Lancet last week by a team of researchers from MIT and Harvard Medical School, which created an AI that could accurately identify a patient’s self-reported race based on medical images like X-rays alone. As if that wasn’t creepy enough, the researchers behind the model don’t know how it’s reaching its conclusions. “The team discovered that the model was able to correctly identify race with roughly 90 percent accuracy—a feat that’s virtually impossible for a human doctor to...

An Austrian artist who became known as the 'enfant terrible' of art for shows that featured dead animals and lashings of blood has died aged 83. Hermann Nitsch died at a hospital in the Austrian town of Mistelbach on Monday after a serious illness, his wife said.     Nitsch, born in Vienna on Aug. 29, 1938, was versatile - with performance art, painting, sculpting and composing among his activities. He was a co-founder of Viennese Actionism and best known for his Theater of Orgies and Mysteries, conceived as a visceral synthesis of the arts.  It peaked with a '6-day Play' in 1998, featuring more than 3,400 gallons of wine, hundreds of liters of blood, a kilogram of grapes and tomatoes, several animal carcasses and musical accompaniment. Nitsch was part of the 'Actionists', a radical 1960s avant-garde movement known for skinning animal carcasses, tying up human bodies and using blood, mud and urine in their works. His works and performances drew plenty of criticism.  In 1966, police in London were called to one of Nitsch's performances at a venue on Fleet Street...
In this article TSLA Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been promising customers a driverless vehicle since at least 2016. While the company hasn't delivered on that promise, Tesla lets thousands of employees and customers try new and unfinished driver assistance features on public roads in the U.S. through a program called Full Self Driving Beta, or FSD Beta.   Only Tesla owners who have the company's premium FSD driver assistance system installed in their cars can join the FSD Beta program. (That option costs $12,000 up front or $199 per month in the U.S. today.) Owners must then obtain a high driver-safety score, as determined by Tesla software that monitors their driving habits, and maintain it to keep FSD Beta access. No safety certification or professional training is required. FSD Beta can best be summarized as a host of new features that are not yet debugged. Chief among them is "autosteer on city streets," which lets the car navigate around complex urban environments automatically. In January and February, CNBC rode along with three Tesla owners who are participants in...

But turns out there's a way to ditch the iron for good thanks to a little-known (but genius) hack. 1NINTCHDBPICT000459392516Credit: Getty - Contributor Laundry expert and CEO of Laundryheap, Deyan Dimitrov, reckons 2021 is the year we say goodbye to ironing - and stock up on ice cubes instead. For a crease-free solution with minimal effort, Deyan says to throw an ice cube (or two) into the tumble dryer with your clothes - yep, you read that right. Added to a load with dry clothes, the heat will melt the ice and release steam, therefore decreasing your clothes in just 10 minutes or less . Or, for light creases, get the job done while taking a hot shower - just hang up your clothes in the bathroom and keep any windows closed to achieve the same benefits of a steam iron.  But if you remain sceptical (we know, it's hard to believe), cleaning fanatics have been trying...
Microsoft is building a new password manager that syncs credentials across its Edge browser, Google Chrome, and mobile iOS or Android devices. A preview version of the password manager is now built into Microsoft Authenticator, a free mobile app that’s used for multi-factor authentication. Like many other password managers, it can autofill passwords in apps or websites on iOS or Android. Passwords are synced from the Microsoft Edge browser, and can be shared across multiple devices using a Microsoft Account. You can also sync these passwords to Google Chrome, using a new Microsoft Autofill extension. This will sync any passwords stored on your Microsoft Account. The new autofill feature in Microsoft Authenticator.Microsoft Rumors had suggested Microsoft would create a full password manager for its Microsoft 365 consumer service, but this appears to be the next best thing. The autofill feature will be useful for Microsoft Account users working across multiple devices, but a full password manager like 1Password or LastPass is still a good option. This new autofill feature is available as a...
Doctors should not treat coronavirus patients with remdesivir 'regardless of how ill they are', the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. The antiviral showed early promise in pre-clinical Covid-19 trials and has been used around the world to treat people with severe disease, including in the UK. But officials at the WHO have now said there is 'no evidence' it boosts people's chances of surviving the disease or stops them falling ill enough to need mechanical ventilation. Scientists at the global health body are officially recommending against its use after reviewing evidence from four international trials of over 7,000 patients.  They have warned there is the 'possibility of important harm' when using the experimental Ebola drug - it can sometimes cause kidney and liver damage in some patients.   The WHO Guideline Development Group (GDG) described the drug as an expensive 'gamble' - a five-day course of treatment for one patient costs around £1,773 ($2,340).  For comparison, the steroid dexamethasone costs just £5 ($6.60) per patient and has been scientifically proven to improve survival in the most ill Covid patients. Andy Kindon/Insider The Safari Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for Cats is made for detangling mats and removing loose fur from the undercoat of long-haired cats. The brush has an easy-press button on the back to retract the pins and clean out hair in a single motion. Brushing a long-haired cat daily with a slicker brush can reduce hairballs and keep their coat shiny and mat-free. Since I found him in my backyard eight years ago, my cat Osito's fluffy black coat has pretty much taken care of itself and we've never needed to see a groomer. Other than a light brushing here and there, his long hair has been blissfully tangle-free. But just this year, with Osito pushing 12 years old, I've begun to discover mats where they never dared to form before, especially in hard to reach places under his arms and on his...
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Have you ever had a helium balloon in your car and notice that its movements are much different than you would expect? If you never noticed, it is certainly something to see. It also has a lot of science behind it. Much of this science we have talked about in Hey Ray segments, so let’s put a few lessons together to figure out what makes a helium balloon act funny in a moving vehicle. We recently talked about how air takes up space and has weight. This continued to a discussion about density, and how substances of different densities interact with each other. Now we’re going to put those principles together. (Photo Credit: Ray Petelin) First, your vehicle is much like the pop or soda bottle we used in a previous experiment. It is a container full of air. We know air takes up space and has weight, and that means it also moves like you do in a moving vehicle. When you speed up, the air is pushed back, just like you’re pushed back in your...
By Rachel Metz | CNN Business Elon Musk promised that he’d show a working demo of his latest technology moonshot, a new kind of implantable chip for the brain, last Friday. And he did, but it wasn’t with a human subject: Rather, it was with a pig named Gertrude. In a live-streamed event that began characteristically late, Musk unveiled three not-so-little pigs: one that did not have an implant from his brain-computer interface company, Neuralink; one that had been implanted in the past; and Gertrude, who currently has a prototype of the device. Gertrude shuffled around her pen, sniffing the ground and eating, while loud beeps and blips filled the air and a display showed real-time spikes in her brain activity. Musk explained that Gertrude had the implant inserted in her head two months before, and that it connected to neurons in her snout. When she touched something with her snout, it sent out neural spikes that were detected by the more than 1,000 electrodes in the implant. Why show pigs when you’re developing a product aimed at humans? “Pigs...
An innovative artist has found a unique way to create paintings by injecting acrylic paint into bubble wrap. Bradley Hart, 47, a Toronto native artist based in New York, spends days loading the syringes with paint and then injects each cell of the bubble wrap, creating amazing photorealistic images. He then peels away the excess paint from the back sheet creating an impressed, flowing abstract version of the project, and his artwork varies from recreation of a famous painting to Marilyn Monroe's iconic portrait and his personal memories. It takes Bradley three to four days to load 1500- 2000 plus syringes, another day prepare the canvas and stretch it and each project takes about a month to complete.  Bradley Hart, 47, a Toronto native artist based in New York, spends days loading the syringes with paint and then injects each cell of the bubble wrap, creating amazing photorealistic images (Marilyn Monroe seen) He then peels away the excess paint from the back sheet creating an impressed, flowing abstract version of the project (Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat seen) His artwork...
A breastfeeding expert has explained the different stages of a suckling baby - and revealed why they often seem more hungry at the end of a feed. Nicky Gibbon, from West Yorkshire, is a volunteer at the Calderdale Breastfeeding Peer Support Service, which offers support and information to new mothers using their own personal experience and training.  In the video, posted on the organisation's Facebook group, Nicky used a solution made up of water containing blue dye and oil to represent the milk and squeezed it into wine glasses using a sponge to demonstrate the different stages of feeding. She also explained how a baby will 'cleverly' adapt to the weather and respond to their growth spurts to determine how much milk they need and the way they suck.  Nicky Gibbon used a dilution of water, dyed blue, with a yellow oil to represent the high-calorie, fattier content of the milk (pictured left). She mixed the solution to show how the formula is stored in the breast (right)  The jug of dyed water represents the bulk of the breast milk, while the...
